An odd week is ahead, beginning with games on Monday. First up...
BMW RockDome, Westside: Midnight v. Cheddar. Very aggressive Urban rivals clash in 9-ball with the silver cue. Game 1 started a little slowly, especially for Westside's Midnight. North Modernistic's Cheddar won suddenly, converting the 3-9 combination to the bottom right to go up 1-0 in the series. The Rockers' Midnight wasn't able to turn things around in game 2, struggling for offense. The Nighthawks' Cheddar started slow again, but finished on a well-played four-ball run-out to seal the series at 2-0. Cheddar didn't have a finishing attack in game 3, instead watching Midnight tally a three-ball run-out to avoid the sweep. Cheddar took the series 2-1 and will be a visitor again in the third round.
Cisco Arena, Tysini: Charli v. Hoppy. The silver cue stays on for a series of 10-ball. Game 1 turned into a back-and-forth battle at the end, with Archtown's Hoppy ultimately scratching as she made the 10. Tysini's Charli benefited, getting the win after controlling most of the offense for a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Charli would regret leaving the 10 at the bottom right off the game 2 break, as the Arrows' Hoppy finished a 6-10 combination for a three-ball run-out on her second turn. Hoppy's heads-up play tied the series at 1. Charli and Hoppy both took pot shots at the 10 early in the game, but neither could strike for the win. Charli then made a three-ball run-out at the end, taking the series 2-1 to set herself up to host the Pronger Tridents' Spot in the third round.
Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Max v. Jake. More 10-ball goes after the break with the blue cue in hand. Golden's Max played well at the start and the end of game 1 despite ceding some ground in the middle to Royal's Jake. Max's pair of shots at the end earned him a win and a 1-0 series lead. The Crowns' Jake found his best form of the series in game 2, rallying on his third turn to make a nine-ball run-out for the win after a slow start between him and the Pilots' Max. Jake's big push tied the series at 1. Game 3 also saw a slow start on both sides, but Max was the one to have the breakthrough this time, posting a seven-ball run-out for the win to give himself a 2-1 series win. Max will be the host again in his round three appearance.
Intel Center, Diamond: Katelynn v. Klaus. The silver cue is back for this Eastern Hills derby in Rotation. A close start in game 1 unraveled in favor of Diamond's Katelynn, who used a five-ball run-out to defeat Atlantic's Klaus by an 8-3 score for the 1-0 series lead at the start. The Gems' Katelynn didn't ease up on the attack in game 2, giving the Pirates' Klaus hardly anything to work with. Katelynn had a rare finish, making the 7-11-8 combination to the top right that deflected the 9 into the bottom side for a 9-0 win to seal the series at 2-0. Katelynn stepped out to a nice lead in game 3, but Klaus cut the 10 to the bottom right and got a deflection on the 15 at the bottom side to gain the lead on his late rally. Klaus would win 8-5, but Katelynn advanced to the third round on a 2-1 series win.
Toyota Arena, Freedom: Nikolai v. Cheddar. The visitor gets her second series today, playing 12-ball with the blue cue. Freedom's Nikolai made a pair of solids from the break in game 1, and then set himself up well at the sides while North Modernistic's Cheddar struggled. Nikolai would convert his last two shots with ease for the 1-0 series lead. The Cascades' Nikolai claimed stripes on the break of game 2, and while his late finishing lacked authority, the Nighthawks' Cheddar couldn't recover in time. Nikolai eventually won at the bottom left to clinch the series at 2-0. Nikolai again started well in game 3, but he fell apart trying to make his last two balls. Cheddar caught up this time, picking up the win to avoid a sweep. Nikolai took the series 2-1 to earn a hosting spot in the third round.
Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Boots v. Summer. The red cue makes its daily debut in 8-ball. Pearl's Boots suffered a couple of scratches in game 1, drastically slowing down her offense. Maplewood's Summer maintained a steady pace to pick up the win and 1-0 lead in the series. The Surfers' Boots struck for a four-ball run in game 2, which the Lumberjacks' Summer matched. Summer had a later three-ball run, but she would fall as Boots plucked a pair of shots for the win to tie the series at 1 all. Summer needed only a pair of turns to win in game 3, coupling an early five-ball run with a three-ball run-out to finish off a 2-1 series win. Summer heads to round three now.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Daisy v. Twinkie III. The blue cue is back for an Accuracy set, with the visitor starting a doubleheader. Modernistic's Daisy trailed for most of game 1, but managed to force overtime. Whitewater's Twinkie III made a ball on the overtime and Daisy flubbed her shot, giving Twinkie III the 4-5 win for a 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Twinkie III had a solid performance at first in game 2, but she let the Union's Daisy drag her down into a battle. Daisy couldn't stay even for long, ultimately losing 3-4 as Twinkie III secured the series at 2-0. Both players brought their best efforts in game 3, but Twinkie III again prevailed with a 0-1 win to get the 3-0 series sweep over Daisy. Twinkie III will be a visitor again in the third round.
Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Dustin v. Twinkie III. The visitor completes her road doubleheader in 9-ball with the blue cue. Whitewater's Twinkie III made a five-ball run in game 1, but Central's Dustin sandwiched it with successful pairs of shots, earning the win for himself. Dustin leads the series 1-0. The Warriors' Dustin tried to attack strongly in game 2, working a four-ball run, but he missed on the 7. The Shores' Twinkie III then made a three-ball run-out all at the top side for the win, tying the series at 1. Twinkie III surged again late in game 3, but she ended up short with her four-ball run. Dustin potted the 9 to the bottom right to poach the win and 2-1 series win that allows him to host the Southern Monarchs' Panda in the third round.
Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Rosemary v. Watermelon. The silver cue returns now for 12-ball. Commerce's Rosemary gave a wild-card ball away on the game 1 break, but Pearl's Watermelon returned the favor. The game ended with equal challenge, but Rosemary missed contact on her last ball and Watermelon made a pair to go ahead 1-0 in the series. The Surfers' Watermelon never had good positioning in game 2, while the Tradewinds' Rosemary began on a four-ball run cut short by a scratch. Rosemary recovered and easily got the win to tie the series at 1. Watermelon saw solids line up very nicely for her in game 3, as she claimed then on her second turn with a nice run. Rosemary had a three-ball run near the end, but it didn't stop Watermelon from winning to take the series 2-1. Watermelon is off to round three.
Audi Hall, Terrace City: Quincy v. Steven. The reigning MVP meets a hardened veteran in 10-ball with the silver cue. Terrace City's Quincy had a couple of good moments in game 1, but it was Atlantic's Steven winning the back-and-forth battle at the top side. Steven's clutch finish gave him a 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Quincy picked up his pace in game 2, rallying with a five-ball run before missing on the 8. The Pirates' Steven stayed calm to finish on a three-ball run-out, sealing the series at 2-0 in the process. The roles from before reversed in game 3, as Steven had the five-ball run over the middle while Quincy capped a three-ball run-out by banking the 10 to the bottom left for his lone win. Steven won 2-1 in the series, and he'll host the Swordpoint Blades' Bandit in the third round.
Ford Forum, Pronger: Spot v. Rudolph. The red cue kicks off a venue doubleheader with 7-ball. Pronger's Spot made three on the break in game 1 and added one more before turning over possession. Harrison's Rudolph nearly won with a three-ball run, but he scratched while making the 7, gifting the win and 1-0 series lead to Spot. The Tridents' Spot had another good start in game 2, and while the Specters' Rudolph made a late push, he came up empty on the 5. Spot potted a pair at the end for the win to secure the series at 2-0. Rudolph finally broke through on a 5-7 combination to the top right at the end of game 3, helping him avoid the sweep. Spot still won the series 2-1 and he'll host again in the third round.
Ford Forum, Pronger: Zach v. Puff III. The other half of the venue doubleheader sees the red cue stay for 9-ball. Pronger's Zach had a struggle in game 1 after starting on a four-ball run. His cold offense late in the game allowed a slower pace from Everton's Puff III to be good enough for the win. Puff III leads the series 1-0. The Eagles' Puff III didn't even consider looking back in game 2, running the table from the break for a massive win over the Tridents' Zach. Puff III's burst of offense makes it a 2-0 series lead for her. Puff III couldn't quite maintain that high pace in game 3, allowing Zach much more of the offense. Zach capitalized with a three-ball run-out at the end for his lone win. Puff III advances to the third round on a 2-1 series win, and she'll be a visitor next time.
HP Field Events Center, Midland: Americus v. Missy. The red cue finishes its day in Accuracy. Capital City's Missy had nothing positive in game 1, simply missing a bunch of shots that Midland's Americus had no trouble cleaning up. Americus won 0-5, the hefty victory giving her a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Americus found herself on the wrong end of a blowout in game 2, as the Sharpshooters' Missy did wonderfully to earn the 1-5 win, despite not playing perfectly. The series is tied at 1 and heading to a decisive game. Americus bounced back wonderfully in game 3, holding on long enough to earn the 2-6 win as Missy unraveled late in the game. Americus won the series 2-1, and she will host a series in round three.
FedEx Arena, Eastside: Chelsea v. Cubby. A pair of Eastside Sharks teammates tangle in 7-ball with the blue cue. A tricky start to game 1 saw Chelsea take a ball on the break, spar with Cubby for a couple of turns, and then Chelsea potted the 4-7 combination to the top right with force. Chelsea leads the series 1-0. Chelsea did everything but win in game 2, making a six-ball run from the break before suffering a scratch. Cubby took the 7 from ball-in-hand for the cheap win, tying the series at 1. Cubby had a pair on the break and three more at the end, although it was unclear if the opening shot of his winning run was legal or not. Chelsea put up no protest, allowing her teammate Cubby to visit Sydney C. of the Modernistic Union in the third round.
Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Stealth v. Cobalt. The blue cue steps in for 12-ball after a second break. Swordpoint's Stealth came very close to winning game 1, but he snookered himself on his last ball. Stonebridge's Cobalt took advantage of the misplay, winning from ball-in-hand for a the 1-0 series lead. The Blades' Stealth had one hearty attack in game 2, but he had no positioning after that. The Wolves' Cobalt played patiently and won from ball-in-hand after another missed contact for Stealth. Cobalt sealed the series at 2-0 with the win. Cobalt took the loss in game 3, falling short of a sweep after giving away a pair of wild-card balls to Stealth. Cobalt won the series 2-1 and will be a host in his third-round series.
Ford Forum, Pronger: Spot v. Shaggy. The host's second series of the day is in Accuracy with the silver cue to end the day. Pronger's Spot couldn't make an early lead hold up, falling apart later in game 1 while Whitewater's Shaggy held fairly steady for the 2-4 win. Shaggy owns a 1-0 series lead. The Tridents' Spot turned things around in a strong game 2 performance. The Shores' Shaggy hung around for awhile, but a late pair of misses set Spot up to tie the series at 1 with his 1-3 win. Spot kept a perfect effort in game 3, with Shaggy trying to compete until giving up at the end. Spot's 0-5 win gave him a 2-1 series win to send him into the third round.
That's it for today. We'll try to keep on a regular schedule tomorrow. Wednesday will be the off day this week, followed by games Thursday through Saturday.
