The second day of nine in the First Round is set to begin. We lead off with...
Sleepy B. v. Jane. The blue cue has the opening series today in 8-ball. Archtown's Sleepy B. was behind early in game 1, but she made a four-ball run to get ahead of Stonebridge's Jane. Sleepy B. then made the 8 on her next turn for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Arrows' Sleepy B. jumped out to a lead in game 2, but this didn't hold up at the end. The Wolves' Jane fought back with a four-ball run-out to snag the win, tying the series at 1. Sleepy B. had her chance on the 8 late in game 3, but she left it standing, and Jane made it on her second try for the win and 2-1 series win. Jane is in the second round.
Snuggle v. Kitty. Along to 13-ball, where the silver cue gets a look. Oceanside's Snuggle looked poised for victory, but a scratch and bad positioning left him out of play. Midland's Kitty rallied back to get the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Snuggle wasn't able to make any ball besides the 8 in game 2, gifting away the win to the Predators' Kitty, who already had a lot of control. Kitty sealed the series at 2-0. Kitty had a sharp start to game 3, but quickly dulled near the end as Snuggle pulled away just long enough to nab a win. Kitty settled for a 2-1 series win to put her in the second round.
Niki v. Neopolitan. Another 13-ball series features the purple cue. Commerce's Niki had an overfill to start game 1, but she recovered as Pearl's Neopolitan was even slower to attack. Niki won on a three-ball run-out for the 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Niki ended up with solids in game 2, then just barely emerged with victory after a stern challenge from the Surfers' Neopolitan. Niki clinched the series at 2-0. Niki wasn't able to finish the sweep, as Neopolitan had a little redemption in a good game 3. Niki won the series 2-1 to earn her place in the second round.
Dustin v. Taylor S. The green cue's first turn of the day is in 8-ball. Central's Dustin had a slow start in game 1, while Eastside's Taylor S. was able to establish a lead. Dustin pushed back late, but Taylor S. won on a three-ball run-out for the 1-0 series lead. The Sharks' Taylor S. had her struggles in game 2, allowing the Warriors' Dustin to find a groove early. Dustin capped it off with a three-ball run-out for the win, tying the series at 1. Taylor S. executed a four-ball run-out in a tight game 3 to get the win and 2-1 series win over Dustin. Taylor S. is in the second round.
Strut v. Gizmo. Back to 13-ball, where the red cue draws into the action. Golden's Strut had all the pace in game 1, but he scratched as he made the 8 after spending multiple turns setting it up. This gifted a win and 1-0 series lead to North Modernistic's Gizmo. In game 2, the Nighthawks' Gizmo somewhat returned the favor, sinking the last ball for the Pilots' Strut. After that, Strut cut the 8 to the top side for the win to tie the series at 1. Strut scratched on the break in game 3, but he bounced back well enough to beat Gizmo on a four-ball run-out at the end. Strut won the series 2-1 to get into the second round.
Taylor S. v. Nibbles. The designated host gets a second series today, using the blue cue in 12-ball. Commerce's Taylor S. had a poor start and a scratch in the middle of game 1. Web City's Nibbles was in good position to win, but faltered on his last ball just enough for Taylor S. to win on a three-ball run-out. Taylor S. is ahead 1-0 in the series. The Tradewinds' Taylor S. was slow to attack in game 2, while the Spiders' Nibbles managed to turn great positioning into a tense battle. Nibbles eventually won on his third try at the top right to tie the series at 1. Nibbles held the advantage early in game 3, but he was too slow at the end, and Taylor S. rallied all the way back to get the win for a 2-1 series win. Taylor S. puts another bid in the second round.
Pounce v. Diddley. Strong veterans clash in 13-ball with the silver cue. Southern's Pounce got through game 1 despite battling a shoulder injury, just picking off the 8 at the top right to take a 1-0 series lead over Diddley. However, the injury was aggravated and caused a third postponement of the day's action. The Monarchs' Pounce needed nearly a week to recover from the injury before play resumed. He looked fine in game 2, but wasn't able to finish it out, as the Lumberjacks' Diddley struck back on a three-ball run-out. Pounce struggled in game 3, while Diddley was able to attack over three turns to grab an easy win for the 2-1 series win. Diddley is set to act as visitor to Niki in the second round.
Spirit v. Dusty. One of the truly iconic matches goes with the purple cue in 7-ball. Golden's Dusty had a slower start in game 1, but Lighton's Spirit got rattled by a miss. Dusty took over on a four-ball run-out for the 1-0 series lead. The Pilots' Dusty started better in game 2, but couldn't counterattack as the Prestige's Spirit closed out this battle with a win to tie the series at 1. Spirit had a chance to get onto the 7 in game 3, but she missed the 6 at the bottom side. Dusty made no mistake to convert the final pair, her win giving her a 2-1 series win and a trip to the second round.
Smokey v. Dreamy. The green cue cycles in for an 8-ball series. Swordpoint's Dreamy had the first major run in game 1, but Diamond's Smokey countered on a six-ball run and eventually picked up the last two shots he needed to win for a 1-0 series lead. The Gems' Smokey opened game 2 with another six-ball run, but he was silenced this time. The Blades' Dreamy made a five-ball run and a three-ball run-out to earn the win, tying the series at 1. Dreamy and Smokey combined for an incredibly hot start, then slowed down at the end. Smokey would win with the 8 at the top left on his second try, good for a 2-1 series win to get into the second round.
Citrus v. Sydney C. The red cue administers a 13-ball set. Lighton's Citrus asserted herself with a four-ball run in the middle of game 1. Modernistic's Sydney C. then gave away the game by sinking the 8 prematurely, and Citrus took a 1-0 series lead. The Union's Sydney C. had another decent push in the middle of game 2, but the Prestige's Citrus evaded it with a four-ball run-out for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Citrus didn't have her best offense in place for game 3, and Sydney C. took advantage of it, getting a consolation win to end with a 2-1 series loss. Citrus moves on to the second round.
Rainmane v. Dusky. Veterans clash in 10-ball with the blue cue here. Web City's Rainmane went empty on the game 1 break but left the 10 very close to the top left. Atlantic's Dusky won on a three-ball run-out capped by a 3-10 combination to give her a 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Rainmane turned it around in game 2, as the Pirates' Dusky struggled to get much going. Rainmane then fired off a three-ball run-out, winning with the 4-10 combination at the bottom left to tie the series at 1. Rainmane lifted a six-ball run in game 3, but she missed the 10 narrowly at the bottom left. Dusky picked it off for the win, winning the series 2-1 and moving to the second round where she'll be the acting host versus the Lighton Prestige's Spirit.
Panda v. Waluigi. In 9-ball, the silver cue takes a turn. Web City's Waluigi dominated in game 1, making a pair of three-ball runs. The latter of the two was the winning turn, giving Waluigi a 1-0 series lead over Southern's Panda. The Spiders' Waluigi needed only two shots to win game 2, sinking the 1 on the break and getting a kick on the 2 to deflect off the 8 and into the 9 at the top left for the win. A stunned Monarchs' Panda is out of this event as Waluigi sealed the series at 2-0. Both players missed on their first turns, but Waluigi made the 5 on a deflection and then double-potted the 1 and 9 to the bottom side and bottom left on his second turn. Waluigi swept the series 3-0 to advance to the second round.
Bear v. Sierra. Accuracy is next, using the purple cue. TodavĂa's Sierra had a fine start in game 1, but faded quickly as Whitewater's Bear recovered for a 1-4 win and 1-0 series lead. The Stills' Sierra kept it closer in game 2, but she missed a shot late. The Shores' Bear held on at the end with strong play, grabbing a 2-3 win to secure the series at 2-0. Game 3 saw Bear struggle early, then push back against Sierra late only to fall short. Sierra got a 2-3 win, but Bear took the series 2-1 and will head to the second round as the clear 3rd-place winner from 2014.
Sugar v. Valencia. Once more in 13-ball today, this time with the green cue. Golden's Valencia had a poorly-timed scratch near the end of game 1, and that opened things up for Tysini's Sugar to earn the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Sugar had a bit of a battle on her hands in game 2, but she came up short at the end as the Pilots' Valencia made the final pair to tie the series at 1. Sugar bounced back with a big run in game 3, finishing strong as Valencia slipped up late. Sugar's win gave her a 2-1 series win and a trip to the second round.
Taylor S. v. Leonette. The designated host goes for a third time today, using the red cue for 7-ball. Commerce's Taylor S. scratched early in game 1, and Pacific's Leonette replied with a six-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Leonette picked off game 2 on the break, as the 5 caromed off the right rail and glanced the 7 into the top side late. This sealed the series at 2-0 for Leonette over the Tradewinds' Taylor S. In game 3, neither player was very strong, but Leonette made the 7 on her second try to clinch a 3-0 series sweep. Leonette is into the second round.
Kayla v. Gradley. Southeastern rivals close the day in 7-ball with the blue cue. Boston's Gradley had a pair of three-ball runs to pace himself to victory in game 1 over Queens' Kayla. Gradley holds a 1-0 series lead. The Flames' Kayla made a three-ball run in the middle of game 2, but pairs on either side of that lifted the Swifts' Gradley again as he sealed the series at 2-0 with the win. Kayla avoided the sweep with a good finish in game 3, making a three-ball run-out to leave Gradley with a 2-1 series win. Gradley will play in the second round.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the timing and scheduling of the second round is likely to be delayed. The first round is now projected to end in one week, and the remainder of the TYAT will be in a holding pattern after that.
