UPCL Cricket: Week 31 Part 1

It's the second to last week of the regular season. Recent life events have prevented the week from getting an early start, but all that matter is we're here now. We begin with a team that's got a lot of games left...

Starbucks Cup, Archtown: These teams recently met, with the Arrows coming out on top. Modernistic's Juno had only 37 to start the game off, making a repeat result all the more likely. Sally didn't fare much better with 96 for Archtown in a weak showing. Ms. Puppy slammed 1026 for the Union, using a brilliant backhand deflection to the back 4s on a high arcing ball to keep her turn going. Sleepy B. got some back with 439 for the Arrows, but the game has turned sour for them. Chimpy tacked on 665 more for Modernistic, giving them a stronger lead. Ruby picked up 336, but Archtown has virtually no chance at this point. Puff I had a more of a magic wand than a bat with all her tricks to score 333, giving the Union a solid 2061 as their final. Dusky got cut down at 535, a solid effort that still put the Arrows at a loss with 1406. Modernistic is up to 22-39, ending an eight-game losing streak, while Archtown slides to 23-34, a loss away from elimination.

McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: The Pirates try to sweep their bitter rivals, with those Tridents in their throwback uniforms. Strawberry had a bad swing end her turn at 138 for Pronger. Delila took 192 for Atlantic in response, giving them a narrow lead. Hoot countered with 593 to give the Tridents a stronger second effort. Amber replied with 288 for the Pirates, failing to cover the deficit. Precious barely had time to get a bat behind a ball, but she saved her wicket and rallied for 803 to give Pronger an even better lead. Atlantic again saw a lackluster turn, with Americus taking 320 as the deficit grows significantly. Paps struck 456 to give the Tridents a final of 1990 in an expected win. Dominic came up short with 376 for the Pirates, giving them 1176 in a loss. Pronger gets even with their regional rival in jumping to 21-38, while Atlantic drops to 30-26, and they'll have to hope games in hand turn into wins in practice.

Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The Spurs end their road schedule against a Swifts team that must win out to even think about taking second place overall and the Center Division title. Spice started with a mediocre 245 for Victoria. Patched produced 623 for Boston to give them an ample lead early on. B. Chapman couldn't cover the deficit for the Spurs, taking 264 on her turn. Puff II stumbled with 128 for the Swifts, but their lead remains fairly stable. Yekaterina couldn't fight off a fast ball, and her deflection brought her down with 224 for Victoria. Gradley let the Boston lead slip again with an uncharacteristically weak 81. Kavan came up a point short of forcing a response with 98 for the Spurs, and they'll lose with 831. Sweetheart padded her stats with 492 for the Swifts, giving them a final of 1324. Boston is up to 42-20, now at the mercy of the Tradewinds for their finishing position, while Victoria drops to 22-40 overall, and will end with a road record of 14-18.

Capital City SuperCenter: The Spiders won the first meeting, but the pressure is on as each team only has fingertips to clutch playoff hopes with. Shadow carved up 451 for Web City, a surprising result for the embattled captain. Chris collected 476 for Capital City, edging the hosts slightly ahead. Rainmane slipped with 160 for the Spiders, leaving them vulnerable. Missy blasted 866 for the Sharpshooters, giving them a significant lead at the halfway mark. Sugar didn't have much of a challenge with a slow bat causing her fall with 216 for Web City. Sprinkles scored 328 to keep Capital City in charge. Shiny did well with 511, but the Spiders lost with 1338 as the strong effort was too late. Dani's 297 created a 1967 final for the Sharpshooters in a firm win that keeps improbably playoff odds alive. Capital City stands at 29-34, with only one game left on their schedule, so they have no control of their fate. Web City's chances took a hit with them falling to 26-34.

Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: The Warriors go for a sweep as they get closer to finalizing their season. Watermelon hammered 650 to establish a Pearl lead early in the game. Twilight managed only 281 for Central, and they'll start from behind. Neopolitan took 391 for the Surfers, keeping their lead strong. Dustin got some back with 482 for the Warriors, shrinking the deficit slightly. Wings just missed the last ball he saw, but he tallied 447 as Pearl keeps a brutal pace up. Noelle's 160 for Central likely just gave the game away to the visitors. Cowzart tapped 335 to ice the Surfers offense at 1823 in what they expect to be a win. Gizmo tried to rally with 615 for the Warriors, but he came up short and they took the loss with 1538. Pearl gets a big win to help their clinching run, going to 33-27 and a win away from clinching, while Central is 36-27 on the year with a game to go.

Nike Field, Commerce: The Tridents are the Swifts' current hope, but the Tradewinds humiliated this opponent in their own facility in the last meeting. Pronger's Strawberry ripped 771 this time, nearly tripling her team's total from the last meeting between these teams. Tigerette is in a home slump, hitting only 113 for Commerce. Hoot held things steady with 224 for the Tridents in a poor appearance. Ice Cream faltered with 187 for the Tradewinds, and it looks like an upset is in the making. Precious didn't provide much help with 87 for Pronger. Lionel drilled 496 for Commerce, recovering a portion of the deficit before the final players come to bat. Paps collapsed at 98 for the Tridents, and their final rests at a potentially vulnerable 1180. Lorde completed the comeback with 547 for the Tradewinds, giving them a win on 1343. Commerce showed heart in this win, clinching second place and the Center Division title at 45-17, while Pronger drops to 21-39.

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Surfers have their first chance to clinch a playoff spot if they can sweep the Gems with this road game. Watermelon didn't have a great start, putting up 207 for Pearl. Smokey answered with a reasonable 286 for Diamond, giving them a minor lead early on. Neopolitan was off her game here, taking only 82 as the Surfers are feeling the pressure pretty heavily. Citrus sprayed 800 for the Gems, giving them a significant lead at the halfway point. Wings didn't make an impact, as his 215 will see Pearl fall farther behind. Pedey let Diamond cruise from here, with his 139 not making a noticeable change to the game. Cowzart's 135 for the Surfers didn't help at all, and they'll lose with 639. Cassandra had 128 to cap the Gems with at 1353. Diamond pulls off the upset, acting as an effective spoiler for now, and they'll move to 24-38 while snapping a seven-game losing streak. Pearl drops to 33-28 with the loss, but have three more chances to clinch and could get help in the process.

HP Field, Eastside: The Sharks are still in the fight, while the Union are closing out their road schedule. Juno failed to find much success, hitting 176 for Modernistic in a weak opener. Graham countered with 432 for Eastside, giving them a noticeable lead early on. Ms. Puppy swung 510 for the Union, getting them back in the battle. Chelsea choked with 64 for the Sharks, allowing them to fall behind. Chimpy kept up his late-season surge with 575 for Modernistic, padding their lead nicely. Taylor took a chance on an optional replay, and lost 80% of her offense in the process, posting just 54 for Eastside in a lost game. Puff I gave the Union 234 on her turn, and that made their final 1495 in a solid team performance. Niki had only 128 for the Sharks, and they fell with 678 overall. Modernistic gets another win this week, moving to 12-20 for their road slate and 23-39 on the year, while Eastside is 27-34, becoming the fifth team a loss away from elimination.

Chevrolet Field, Everton: The Rockers earning a split would spell doom for the teams just hanging on at this point, but the Eagles are still looking to compete despite owning first overall. Misty cranked out 384 for Westside to begin the game. Goldy answered with 722 for Everton, doing her part to put them ahead. Goatee replied with 287 for the Rockers, but that didn't cover the deficit. Puff III proved relentless, carrying 645 for the Eagles to extend their lead. Midnight countered with 448 for Westside, but they are simply outmatched right now. Cleo slapped another 675 for Everton, likely securing their victory. Chicky Phil looked alright with 433, but the Rockers were overwhelmed and lost with 1552, meaning their road schedule ends with a 12-20 record. Blizzard posted 376 to give the Eagles a winning final of 2418 in a dominant showing. Everton improves to 50-12, while Westside drops to 30-32, hurting their playoff chances by snapping a four-game winning streak.

Toyota Pitch, Freedom: This East Division battle may be the most important game of the season, and the Cascades get the chance to sweep. Fluffina slumped down with 36 for Maplewood, not exactly a tone-setting effort. Jasmine got unlucky with deflections, ending up with only 128 for Freedom as the game starts off with a lack of scoring. Bryant clobbered 676 for the Lumberjacks to produce a good lead. Stinky had only 160 for the Cascades, as it appears they've wasted an opportunity to cement themselves. Diddley had a chaotic start but managed to gain 327 out of it as Maplewood is playing well under pressure. Roxy couldn't make any progress with a mere 82 for Freedom, and it seems as if this season series will be split. Cubby didn't dazzle, but his 176 gives the Lumberjacks 1215, which should be enough in this gritty game. Nikolai couldn't mount a comeback, and his 231 gave the Cascades a loss on 601. Maplewood now stands at 30-30, with an 11-6 division record, and Freedom is just a game ahead at 31-29 with the same division mark.

Amazon Field, Golden: The segment ends with a mostly inconsequential game, but with the Meteors lined up to sweep a superior Pilots side. Mr. Snowman had 336 in a solid start to the game for Viewpoint Sound. Valencia started slow but built up to 619 for Golden, regaining her confidence as the hosts have the initial lead. Mams had only 96 for the Meteors, the most recent in a string of pathetic outings this year. Dusty spiked 220 for the Pilots, with the spike-save allowing to eke out a bit more. Zach caved at 66, with Viewpoint Sound again lacking any resistance to the opponent. Strut tapped 298 for Golden, doing his part to secure a likely victory. Kelly picked up 434 to give the Meteors a final of 932. A. Charlton didn't put much of a bow on it, but her 130 gave the Pilots 1267 to make it an official win. Golden is up to 38-24 now, while Viewpoint Sounds falls to 22-38 on a seventh straight loss.

There should be more to come over the weekend, but no promises.
