UPCL Cricket: Week 13 Part 1

First of all, a programming note. As teams start approaching the midpoints of their seasons, I will be publishing short blurbs about how they are at halfway, predictions for the playoffs, and minor statistical breakdowns to explain how they've gotten to this point. A handful of teams have played 28 or 29 games, and 32 is the halfway point for this season. These will be individual, self-contained posts. With that, let's start with a team nowhere near halfway in...

Starbucks Cup, Archtown: Two solid teams meet for the first time this season. Acorn hammered a quick 713 for Lighton, giving them a solid start. Sally's 72 put Archtown far behind early in the game. The Prestige got another 247 from Spirit, holding their lead steady. Sleepy B. answered with 353 for the Arrows, recovering some of the deficit. Twinkie I was more than willing to stop at 646 for Lighton when a technical error came around. Ruby couldn't get onto her backhand in time to stop a ball from going out of bounds, giving Archtown a meager 60. Lydia's 128 made it 1734 for the Prestige in what appears to be a victory. Dusky fell with 32 for the Arrows, and the loss was confirmed with them finishing at 517 total. Lighton is 14-10, while Archtown slides to 9-9.

McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: The East Division gets a bit of early attention in this game. Shadow batted 655 for Web City, a strong opener for the fairly sheltered team. Delila smacked 930 for Atlantic, putting them ahead early in a high-offense battle. Rainmane kept the Spiders going in the right direction, hauling in 663 to regain a temporary lead. Amber struggled through a jerky turn, scoring 337 for the Pirates to keep things close. Sugar kept the Web City attack up with 656, making her first foray in a month-long campaign to be promoted to a CCC team. Americus replied with 837 for Atlantic, giving them the lead heading into the final players. Shiny faltered with 240 for the Spiders, giving them 2214 to force a small response from the hosts. Dominic didn't dazzle, but his 220 gave the Pirates 2324 in the win. Atlantic has won four straight at home and six straight overall to go to 17-10, while Web City is scuffling again at 8-12.

Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The cream of the Center Division meet now and again for the return match next week. Tigerette belted 1039 for Commerce, setting a strict tone. Patches faltered with 49 for Boston, putting them at the bottom of a steep hill. Ice Cream grabbed 274 to supplement the Tradewinds lead. Puff II lined 472 to get some back for the Swifts before the halfway mark. Lionel muscled up with 727 for Commerce, likely securing their lead very effectively. Gradley had just 242 for Boston, further reducing the likelihood of a comeback. Lorde messed up and took just 16, but the Tradewinds finish at 2056, a high perch. Sweetheart made a decent challenge with 771, but the Swifts took the loss at 1534, a respectable final. Commerce has won five straight on the road, going to 21-9 while Boston is down to 17-11 as the wind seems to have left their sails a bit.

Capital City SuperCenter: The second leg of the Navy Derby sees the Defenders in pursuit of a sweep of their Center Division rivals. Boots tried a bit too hard, taking in 144 for Southridge. Chris struck 495 for Capital City, giving them the initial advantage. Debby fired back with 696 for the Defenders, offering a stern challenge. Missy couldn't do anything about a high-arcing ball, but she scored 407 to restore a lead for the Sharpshooters at the halfway point. J. Garcia had a solid 274 for Southridge, but they may be vulnerable. Sprinkles collapsed at 84 for Capital City, and they now face a bit of danger late in the game. Shaggy slapped 397 for the Defenders, giving them a total of 1511, which is a solid lead. Dani's 37 sank the Sharpshooters at 1023. Southridge sweeps their big rivals, snapping a four-game road losing streak to ascend to 9-18 (while also somehow 4-5 in division), while Capital City drops to 9-11 with the disappointing loss.

Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: After a Warriors win in Boston, the teams meet for the second time in two weeks to end their season series as part of the Generational Derby. Patches took only 192 for Boston, getting stopped by a bounce. Twilight didn't best her older sister, with only 92 for Central to get the game off to a slow start. Puff II ended strange but produced 458 to get the Swifts off the starting blocks a bit more. Dustin answered with 375, as the Warriors fall a little more off the pace. Gradley's bad read on a ball led to him taking on 368 for Boston, holding their lead steady. Noelle got knocked out by a deflection, posting 39 before the awkward bounce ended her turn for Central. Sweetheart had a middling 231 to give the Swifts a final of 1249. Gizmo made a valiant effort at a comeback with 450 for the Warriors, but his pace was unsustainable and he fell too soon, leaving them at 956 in the loss. The season series goes in a split, with Boston's tenth straight road win pacing them to 18-11, offsetting their home woes, while Central's fourth straight loss sends them to 16-12.

Nike Field, Commerce: The two busiest teams this season tangle for their first meeting. Panda hit 450 for Southern in a reliable opener. Tigerette slugged 879 for Commerce, giving them the first lead. Shannon fired back with 423 for the Monarchs, keeping them in range. Ice Cream completely messed up for the Tradewinds, taking on only 64 to make it a close game halfway through. Kirstin pulled Southern into a noticeable lead with her 313. Lionel got most of it back with his 296, keeping Commerce in a tiny lead heading into the final batters. Nicole tapped 202 for the Monarchs, giving them 1388 as their final score. Lorde flipped 472 for the Tradewinds, leaving no doubt in their victory with a total of 1711. Commerce jumps to 22-9 on a fifth straight win, while Southern falls to 9-21 with the unfortunate loss.

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: Today's matches continue to lack vitriol, with two wildly inconsistent teams on a year-to-year basis squaring off here. Princess launched 1078 for Tysini to begin the game with a bang. Smokey got frustrated with the game when he got stopped at 96 after poor bounces off the pitch. Leandra tacked on 312 for the Hummingbirds to pad the lead. Citrus flicked 495 for the Gems, closing the gap a little bit with the solid performance. Charli likely put the lead at an untouchable level for Tysini, pummeling 1461 in a wonderful showing from the rookie. Pedey gave it an honest try for Diamond, slicing 759 off the deficit. Bright went with 792 for the Hummingbirds, sending them to an all-but-guaranteed win with a grand total of 3643. Cassandra's 208 left the Gems at 1558 in a demoralizing loss. Tysini surges to 17-8, while Diamond is at 13-14, snapping a four-game home winning streak. The streaky Gems need to right the ship before their skid gets out of hand.

HP Field, Eastside: The Hummingbirds head south for the second game of their doubleheader, against a similarly average opponent. Princess had a workable 304 for Tysini as the workload increases. Graham fired back with 626 to give Eastside the initial lead. Leandra took advantage of her mandatory replay after a technical error, slamming 836 to give the Hummingbirds a more stable base. Chelsea kept the Sharks in range by chipping 420 to make it close halfway through. Charli left Tysini vulnerable, collecting just 173 on her turn. Taylor went with 487 to lift Eastside back into the lead with a player each to go. Bright couldn't muster the offense, taking 45 for the Hummingbirds as they fall with 1358. Niki chipped 330 to give the Sharks a winning score of 1863. Eastside happily goes positive to 13-12, while Tysini is down to 17-9 after the Eastern Hills road trip.

Chevrolet Field, Everton: The Northeast is about to get heated as the Spiders are the lucky thirteenth team to try to break down the Eagles' fortress of a home field. Shadow produced 395 for Web City to give them a fighting chance early against the dangerous opposition. Goldy misplayed her turn badly, taking on 80 for Everton to give them an early deficit. Rainmane knocked 771 for the Spiders, extending their lead significantly. Puff III corralled only 229 for the Eagles, and they're in heaps of trouble halfway through the game. Sugar slipped with 81 for Web City, which won't help her CCC bid. Cleo jumped at the opening, scoring 436 for the still-endangered Everton side. Shiny poked 279 to give the Spiders a final of 1526, setting a high standard for the hosts. Blizzard performed well with 424, but the fortress has fallen with the Eagles losing on 1169 to snap a twelve-game home winning streak. Web City has some ammo for the return match in a few months, jumping to 9-12, while an eight-game winning streak ends with Everton at 22-3 now, still well ahead of the field.

Toyota Pitch, Freedom: Two teams familiar with expansion processes meet here. Kiwi, reigning two-week Player of the Week for the Urban Core North region, slapped 463 to begin for Terrace City here. Jasmine did herself in with a double-tap for Freedom, ending her turn at 200. Jennifer bumbled with 96 for the Knights, putting their lead in a vulnerable position. Stinky made an impact with 441 for the Cascades, putting them slightly ahead. Oreo countered with 650 on her turn, putting Terrace City back in a strong position. Roxy had a poised attack, but it ended quickly with a high ball, giving Freedom 280 and a deficit to come back from in a short amount of time. Stripes botched her turn, scoring a measly 33 for the Knights to seal their efforts at 1242. Nikolai came up short with 264 for the Cascades, giving them a loss with 1185. Terrace City is streaking again, going to 18-11 on a four-game winning streak, while Freedom is down to 13-13 on a decidedly average pace.

Amazon Field, Golden: The segment ends here, with the Knights looking to complete a sweep that they started in their first-ever game, a home win over these Pilots. Kiwi churned out 760 for Terrace City this time, a stronger start for the respected captain. Valencia shot back with 392 for Golden, giving them a chance. Jennifer stumbled again with 128 for the Knights, potentially making them vulnerable again. The threat was averted when Dusty had a meager 51 for the Pilots. Oreo had no recourse for a series of odd bounces that sank her at 28 in what's become a low-scoring game for Terrace City. Strut cut into the deficit with 384 for Golden, setting up an interesting ending. Stripes completed the Knights meltdown with just 39, leaving them at 955. A. Charlton hit 321, stealing the win away for the Pilots as they close with 1148. Golden goes to 15-11 with the season split, returning to winning form, while Terrace City may be headed for more losses with their streak snapped as they fall to 18-12.

Part 2 to come later in the week.
