Summer Cricket League: Week 1 Part 2

More SCL action set for tonight, beginning with...

The Caracas Hitmen hosting the Bangkok Sixes. Bangkok's Firdoze Uns began the evening with 286 points, an average total. Vitaya Grichson shot back with 297 for Caracas against his hometown team. Gilbert Berry drilled 375 for the Sixes in his turn, showing a bit of his former prodigious power. Barasa Contee pulled the Hitmen into the lead by crushing 826 points, pacing them well ahead of the visitors. Bangkok's Aleix Nieto came up lame with only 30 points. Noppadon Gruemor didn't fare much better, only hitting 33 points. Zuri Okafor of the Sixes also struggled, posting just 64 points. Trevor Watson managed to chip 133 for the Hitmen, modestly adding to their lead as the offense from the mid-team players dries up completely. Rodas Nunez slugged 476 to pull Bangkok a little closer in the game. Maynard Cabagnot hit 115 for Caracas, tightening the game a little bit. The Sixes got 391 from Luis Godinez, giving them a final of 1622 and a chance to win. Bojing Luo took 139 on a voluntary replay, but it wasn't enough as the Hitmen fell with 1543. Bangkok improves to 2-0 while Caracas is scuffling at 0-2 now.

Next up, the Guatemala Conquistadors welcome the Caracas Hitmen as the latter goes into a back-to-back. Vitaya Grichson of Caracas started by hitting 344. Former star starting pitcher Frisco Romero answered by launching 591 for Guatemala, giving them the early lead. Barasa Contee was halted at 98 for the Hitmen. Eustacio Zarraga didn't do any better, hitting a meager 80 for the Conquistadors. Noppadon Gruemor cashed in for Caracas, blasting 522 to put them in the thick of the battle. Guatemala held off the attack as Kenzo Hashimoto pummeled 619 to maintain the lead. Trevor Watson posted a reasonable 225 for the Hitmen. Curtis Caldwell faltered greatly for the Conquistadors, scoring just 28. Maynard Cabagnot failed to take advantage for Caracas, getting stymied with 20 points. Guatemala didn't get any separation as Azul "Blue Lightning" Mora hit just 60 points as the offenses hibernate again. Bojing Luo blew another game for the Hitmen, scoring only 30 points to leave them short at 1239. Adrien Laurent chipped 152 for the Conquistadors, giving them a win with 1530. Guatemala starts off right at 1-0, while Caracas has already squandered 1/8 of their season, starting 0-3.

Down in South Africa, the Johannesburg Lions host the Toronto Mounties. Cyril Hendrickx led off with 346 for Toronto, showing the poise and consistency he demonstrated as a shortstop. Johannesburg stayed close with Wiebe Becker smacking 352 in his leadoff turn. Curro Garza answered with 316 for the Mounties. The last great catcher, Normando Alonso, crushed 1011 for the Lions, establishing a huge lead. Toronto couldn't keep pace as Axel Maes hit only 119 points. Johannesburg's Ken Howard failed to impress his hometown team, hitting a meager 78 points in his turn. The Mounties saw Alonso's inspiration, Tabor Laureano, hit only 96 points as the offensive outage of the game strikes. Lucio Adame bought the Lions a little bit more room, slicing 256. Toronto pulled a little closer with 553 from Jax Puente, one-half of their Jaxtoine duo at the back of the lineup that did so much damage batting 3 and 4 in the Hipsters lineup. Johannesburg showed vulnerability when Oshri Aharonov, the Jewish Wizard, managed just 75 points. The other half of the Mounties' potent Jaxtoine duo, Antoine Hendrickx, slugged a mighty 1038, giving the visitors 2468 and control in the late stages of the game. Cyril and Antoine's younger brother, Pieter Hendrickx, gave his best effort in hitting 233 for the Lions, but they ended short at 2005 and took a loss to open the series. Toronto is 1-0 while Johannesburg is 0-1 in the game of brotherly love.

Up north, the Madrid Toros bring in the Manila Pacmen. Haejun Ki began for Manila with 259, giving them a modest total. Madrid saw only 145 points from Spencer Howard, putting them behind early. The long-time reliever Porfirio Cazares slapped 272 for the Pacmen, adding onto their lead. Pepillo Gamboa hit just 120 for the Toros, widening the gap between them and the leaders. The maddeningly inconsistent former starter Sander Verheyen hit 423 for Manila, avoiding the usage of his nickname, "Chicken Deuce." That title better fit his brother this time around, as Lennert Verheyen of Madrid has only 33 points. Gerben Bovelt added another 511 for the Pacmen, continuing their dominance in this game. Thabo Chahine shot back with 469 for the Toros, giving them a little life. Manila cracked with 64 from their Belgian speedster Dries Renard. Guillem Gamboa chipped back with 193 for Madrid, shrinking the deficit a little. Richard Miller's 104 left the Pacmen at 1633. Martin Badillo put up 145 for the Toros, but they lost with 1105 as the former coach couldn't do enough to lift them up. Manila is 1-0 on the season, while Madrid falls to 0-2.

Closing out this session, the Manila Pacmen make the long journey home to host the Prague Checkmates. Prague got off to a good start, as the pitcher heavy team used their ace first and the physically talented Pancho Barrios did not disappoint with 425 in his first appearance with a bat. Haejun Ki kept Manila in it with 416. The Checkmates saw 258 from Lucila Zavala, the only pitcher in team history to throw a no-hitter and the more dominant of the two-headed monster from the early years. Porfirio Cazares couldn't gain control on his turn, hitting just 25 for the Pacmen. Prague's third starter, Hyunjae "Duckman" Kwak laid an egg with only 50 points. Manila took advantage of the misstep, as Sander Verheyen again hit well with 420 for the hosts. The Checkmates' only non-pitcher, Corentin Aerts, posted 242 for his team as the former center-fielder did a little less than average. Gerben Bovelt gave the Pacmen control with a massive 674-point effort. Prague's Darryl Estrada shot right back with 773 for the team, a continuation of his ability to get better as he aged. Dries Renard tallied 153 for Manila, leaving them behind with a player each to go. Rayan Carranza, the fiery reliever, tacked on 384 for the Checkmates, giving them a final of 2132. Richard Miller hit 280 for the Pacmen, but they lost with 1968 in the tight game. Prague is up to 1-0, while Manila falls to 1-1.

That's all for now. By Friday, we will have completed Week 1, including the first showcase game.
