Summer Cricket League: Week 1 Part 3

We're at the end of week 1 for the SCL. After the league games are done for the week, I'll attach a standings sheet to this post, and then there will be Showcases. First off...

The Melbourne Renegades host the Johannesburg Lions. Wiebe Becker got things going with a strong 411 for Johannesburg. Melbourne got off to a rough start as Charlie Thompson posted only 33 points. Normando Alonso added on with 279 for the Lions. Theodore White was halted at 28 points for the Renegades, who do not appear to be enjoying the start of their season. Ken Howard bounced back from a rough season debut with 570 in his second game for Johannesburg. Sancho Ramos crushed 713 to get Melbourne back in the game. Lucio Adame poked 256 for the Lions, pacing them slightly farther ahead. Rana Naqvi chipped 224 for the Renegades, keeping them within striking distance. Oshri Aharonov faltered with 177 for Johannesburg. Sikke Eichel ripped 519 for Melbourne, pulling them significantly closer. Pieter Hendrickx was stopped at 41 for the Lions, giving them 1734 as their offense faded late. Stanley Watts lifted 364 for the Renegades, giving them 1881 as their final for an impressive come from behind victory. As we used to in the baseball league, the hashtag #TurnDownForWatts currently applies. Melbourne gets off to an exciting start at 1-0 while bumping Johannesburg to 0-2 early in the season.

There's no rest for the weary, as the Prague Checkmates welcome the Melbourne Renegades. Charlie Thompson did much better for Melbourne, slicing 378 to begin the game. Pancho Barrios kept it close for Prague, dropping 368 in his turn. Theodore White managed 115 for the Renegades, leaving them vulnerable. Lucila Zavala answered with 320 for the Checkmates, giving them the lead. Sancho Ramos couldn't duplicate his performance for Melbourne, hitting only 130. Hyunjae Kwak's tough start to the season continued, as he posted just 104 for Prague. Rana Naqvi stumbled to 119 for the Renegades, keeping the scoring down again. Corentin Aerts did nothing to give the Checkmates separation, hitting a meager 46 points. His fellow "Three Musketeer," Sikke Eichel, crushed 848 for Melbourne, giving them a significant lead late in the game. Darryl Estrada mustered only 75 for Prague, putting them in a position to lose. Stanley Watts, the third of the musketeers, tacked on 529 to give the Renegades a final of 2119. Rayan Carranza's 185 left the Checkmates very short at 1098. Melbourne moves to 2-0 while Prague drops a tough one at home to go to 1-1.

Around the globe, the Seoul Crushers bring in the Johannesburg Lions, who appear to be traveling a bit. Wiebe Becker had only 112 for Johannesburg this time around. Seoul got 471 from their very young former relief pitcher Natal Badillo. Normando Alonso faltered with just 66 points for the Lions. The Crushers saw Gwandoya Makeba pummel 584 for them against his home country's team. Ken Howard grabbed 215 for Johannesburg. Leandro Gamboa got most of it back for Seoul, hitting 192 in his turn. Lucio Adame spiked his output to 912 for the Lions, giving them the lead. Max Jennings pulled the Crushers back in front with 128, but by a much more narrow margin. Oshri Aharonov blasted 312, keeping the pressure up for Johannesburg. Frank Schmidt posted only 64 for Seoul, putting them behind with a player each to go. Pieter Hendrickx chipped 231 to make it 1848 as a final for the Lions. Zdenko Jansky clubbed 176 for the Crushers, but it left them short at 1615. Johannesburg moves to 1-2 on the season, while Seoul drops to 0-2 with the unfortunate loss.

Wrapping up the week, the Toronto Mounties host the already road-weary Caracas Hitmen. Vitaya Grichson was off to a blazing start for Caracas before a bad bounce ended a good game at 180. His replacement from the baseball days, Cyril Hendrickx, gave Toronto 217 and a modest lead. Barasa Contee saw his output dip again, with only 44 points this game for the Hitmen. Curro Garza also scored 217 for the Mounties, adding onto their lead slightly. Caracas had just 108 from Noppadon Gruemor as well, with the tough first week schedule clearly hurting them so far. Axel Maes popped 233 for Toronto, again marginally extending the lead. Trevor Watson kept the Hitmen struggling, hitting just 128 as their offense appears to be on vacation. Tabor Laureano answered with 276 for the Mounties. Maynard Cabagnot poked 144 for Caracas as they faltered further. Jax Puente tapped 281 for Toronto, padding the lead a little more. Bojing Luo mustered 98 points for the Hitmen, who lost brutally with just 702 points. Antoine Hendrickx iced the game for the Mounties with 409, giving them a total of 1633. Toronto is 2-0, while Caracas drops to 0-4.

Here's the full standings.

Finally, we have the Showcase games, the first one between the American Rebels and the UPCL Northeast Region. Axel Cools began with 328 for American. Leandra, currently of the Harrison Specters, hit only 233 for Northeast. Louvel Lefevre added 610 for the Rebels, putting them firmly in control. Noelle, of the current champion Central Warriors, demolished Lefevre's bowling, hitting 2307 off of him and giving Central pretty much all they needed to know about Noelle. Sander Lambert, clearly shaken by Noelle, hit a meager 6 points for American. Another Warrior, Gizmo, had only 183 for Northeast, and his future is cloudier on the cricket side of things. Irsyad Sudjana posted only 66 for the Rebels, who are clearly being outplayed in all facets. Slinks knocked a cool 400 for Northeast, continuing the domination. Sabino Chacon hit only 51 for American, as the game gets more and more out of hand. Blizzard, of the Everton Eagles, had 202 for Northeast, although she always seems to do better than the numbers indicate. After 36 from Cisco Solorio, the Rebels ended with 1097, getting blown out of the water. Northeast had 3673 after 348 from Cubby of the Maplewood Lumberjacks.

In the other Showcase, the Seoul Crushers take on the Eastern Hills Region. Natal Badillo poked 96 for Seoul to lead off. Cowzart of the Freedom Cascades did almost nothing for the Eastern Hills, scoring a measly 11 points. Gwandoya Makeba hit only 117 for the Crushers. Citrus of the Diamond Gems took 99 for the Eastern Hills. Leandro Gamboa lined 412 for Seoul in his turn. Brownie of the Atlantic Pirates shot right back with 414 for the Eastern Hills, keeping pace with the SCL side. Max Jennings scored only 51 for the Crushers, leaving them very vulnerable. Juno, a 2015-2016 season rookie subbing in for the retiring Steven, made Jennings pay by smacking 528, showcasing her particular skill set to any teams with draft picks that are interested. Frank Schmidt got a few back for Seoul, posting 198. Precious, of the Pronger Tridents, didn't do much to save her career with that team, scoring 16 on a bad bounce for the Eastern Hills. Zdenko Jansky slugged 414 for the Crushers, giving them 1288 and forcing the UPCL side to make a statement. Stinky, another Cascade, answered with 120 for the Eastern Hills, but it left them at 1188 and they took a loss. So far, UPCL and SCL teams are even 1-1, but UPCL has a huge point advantage.
