We're back with cricket games again, and we begin the day in...
Johannesburg, with the Lions hosting the Madrid Toros. Madrid began well as Spencer Howard provided them with 515 points to start the game. Wiebe Becker pulled back with 277 for Johannesburg. Pepillo Gamboa managed only 72 points for the Toros, putting them in a less stable position. Normando Alonso hit 231 to get the Lions closer in a tight game. Madrid reestablished their lead with 312 from Lennert Verheyen. Ken Howard raked in 152 for Johannesburg, leaving them slightly behind. Thabo Chahine produced 176 for the Toros in his South Africa homecoming, again causing the visitors to be vulnerable. Lucio Adame continued his excellent start to the season for the Lions, crushing 1514 against his native country's team to establish a significant lead. Guillem Gamboa shot back with 359 for Madrid, putting a slight dent in the deficit. Oshri Aharonov continued to struggle for Johannesburg, putting up only 16. Martin Badillo scored 162 to give the Toros a final of 1596 in another loss for the struggling team. Pieter Hendrickx popped 752 to cap the Lions win at 2942. Johannesburg moves to 2-3 while Madrid is down to 0-3.
Returning home, the Madrid Toros welcome the Brussels Chocolatiers. Brussels led off with 184 from Patrido Salazar. Madrid kept it close as Spencer Howard sliced 209 for the home team. Florent Claes lined 424 for the Chocolatiers to give them a modest lead. Pepillo Gamboa answered with 409 for the Toros to make the game uncomfortably close. Dobromil Zeman swatted 636 to put Brussels back in charge. Lennert Verheyen shot back against his native country's team with 727 to keep Madrid in the lead. Rodas Cazares couldn't keep escalating the battle, hitting 193 for the Chocolatiers. Thabo Chahine left the Toros in trouble after hitting just 33. Eric Zaragoza knocked 304 for Brussels, padding their lead. Guillem Gamboa chipped back with 329 for Madrid. Jaturun Choen had only 69 points for the Chocolatiers, leaving them at 1810. Martin Badillo supplied 264 to give the Toros 1971 and the win. Madrid is up to 1-3 and Brussels falls to the same mark.
Into Asia now, as the Manila Pacmen host the Seoul Crushers. Natal Badillo flashed some solid skills for Seoul, scoring 639 to start the game. Haejun Ki, playing against his home country's team, scored 488 in response for Manila. Gwandoya Makeba answered with 337 for the Crushers. Porfirio Cazares cashed in with 456 for the Pacmen, making the game a little closer. Leandro Gamboa, the star pitcher from the Hipsters days, continued to struggle for Seoul with only 153. Sander Verheyen couldn't pull Manila in front, taking 63 points as his frustrating inconsistency returned. Another maddening player, the Crushers' Max Jennings, helped his team out with 324 to extend the lead. Gerben Bovelt changed the face of the game with 1337 for the Pacmen, establishing a huge lead for the hosts. Frank Schmidt appeared overwhelmed, supplying 217 to Seoul as their comeback will probably fall short. Dries Renard managed a measly 48 for Manila, not that they needed much. Zdenko Jansky had 208 for the Crushers, who fell with 1878. Richard Miller scored 64 to ice the Pacmen win at 2456. Manila is 2-1 while Seoul drops to 0-3.
Down in Australia, the Melbourne Renegades bring in the Amsterdam Hotstove. Jerry Burke slapped 606 for Amsterdam, giving them a very solid start. Melbourne's Charlie Thompson matched it precisely with 606, a perfect cancellation. Yaozu Miao left the door open, giving the Hotstove only 36. Theodore White cranked out 572 for the Renegades, pushing them to the lead. Carlos Barajas got cut down at 144 for Amsterdam, doing little to shrink the deficit. Sancho Ramos kept pace for Melbourne, scoring 176 to maintain a strong lead. Veto Casas' tough season continued, hitting only 64 for the Hotstove, apparently all out of the luck he had when pitching for the Hipsters. Rana Naqvi extended the Renegades lead with 409. Andrew Reynolds posted 292 for Amsterdam as the first half of the Setup Guys dynamic duo. Not to be outdone, Melbourne got 312 from Sikke Eichel, of another dynamic duo of Center Fielders. Manolito Avalos, the other Setup Guy, absolutely dominated with 655 for the Hotstove, but they still lost with 1797. Stanley Watts of the Renegades shot back with 620 (losing the dynamic duo battle just slightly), giving his team 2694 in the win. Melbourne is up to 4-0 and Amsterdam, while performing well, are at 2-2 with some bad breaks.
Back in Europe, the Prague Checkmates close this session hosting the travel-weary Madrid Toros. Spencer Howard showed Madrid's fatigue early, putting up only 80 points. The pitcher-heavy Prague team got 147 from Pancho Barrios, and they appear to want to bowl their way to victory over using a more bat-heavy attack. Pepillo Gamboa shot 345 for the Toros, throwing a shot that indicates they can still compete. Lucila Zavala had only 105 points for the Checkmates, putting them in danger early. Lennert Verheyen smacked 592 for Madrid, strengthening their lead. Hyunjae Kwak managed just 108 for Prague, leaving them further behind. Thabo Chahine chipped 225 for the Toros. Corentin Aerts did little to remedy the struggles of the Checkmates, scoring 152 as the game likely slipped through their hands. Guillem Gamboa got stymied at 81 points for Madrid. Darryl Estrada saved Prague's bacon, blasting 599 to get them back in the thick of the battle. Former reliever and coach Martin Badillo cobbled together 370 to give the Toros a final of 1693. Fellow reliever Rayan Carranza couldn't complete the comeback, faltering with 25 points to leave the Checkmates short at 1136. Madrid survived a tough day to get to 2-3 while Prague fell to 1-2.
I believe I will next play cricket on Thursday morning, wrapping up week 2 with two league and two Showcase games.
