Pool: 2016 B-level First Round - Day 6

We're back with what should be the last day of the round, beginning with...

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Bright v. Sweetheart. The first series of the day is 10-ball with the blue cue, finishing that bracket's round up. Tysini's Bright got off to a crisp start in game 1, dominating possession against Boston's Sweetheart until Bright completed a three-ball run-out capped by a 5-10 combination from distance to the top left for a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Bright looked set to take another game easily after working a five-ball run, but he missed on the 9, and Sweetheart of the Swifts squandered her chance at the 10, allowing Bright to tap it in the top right to move to a 2-0 lead. In game 3, Bright continued to handle the run of play, eventually burying his second chance after a short miss from Sweetheart to sweep the series 3-0. Bright, ranked #108 for 10-ball, will oppose Whiskers of the Infinity Torpedoes in the bracket quarterfinals.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Jennifer Livilotti v. Crystal. The red cue is up for 15-ball in this series. Queens' Crystal hounded the 15 well in game 1, eventually taking it to the top right off a carom from the 8, while Terrace City's Jennifer didn't take an aggressive approach and finds herself down 1-0 in the series. The Knights' Jennifer employed a more defense-oriented approach in game 2, and it worked to suppress the Flames' Crystal. Then, out of nowhere, Jennifer sent the cue toward the 3, breaking up a cluster that drove the 15 to the bottom right to tie the series at 1. Game 3 remained wide open throughout, with Jennifer playing a little less defense, and that came back to haunt her late, as Crystal capitalized on Jennifer missing the 14 to make the last two shots for a win and 2-1 series win. The #132 ranked 15-ball player, Crystal, is set to face Sally of Archtown Arrows in the bracket quarterfinals.

Nissan Hall, Infinity: Whiskers v. Bells. The blue cue returns to the table for Accuracy. Infinity's Whiskers took game 1 by a score of 3-4 in overtime, receiving ball-in-hand when Oceanside's Bells scratched to lead off overtime, essentially securing the loss at that point. Whiskers officiated it with a successful shot and took a 1-0 series lead. The Torpedoes' Whiskers played even better in game 2, winning 1-4 as Bells of the Waves couldn't keep up early on, giving Whiskers the series at 2-0. Whiskers completed the 3-0 sweep with a much sloppier game 3, winning 5-6 on a last-gasp make at the end to prevent overtime. Ranked #104 in Accuracy, Whiskers will next oppose Cowzart of the Pearl Surfers in the bracket quarterfinals.

Apple Center, Todavía: Leonardo v. Sally. The silver cue appears in Rotation for this series. Todavía's Leonardo impressed in a very tight game with Archtown's Sally, battling closely until pulling away to an 8-5 win at the end of the game, good enough for the host to take a 1-0 series lead. The Stills' Leonardo got away with one in game 2, rallying to tie the game at 7 against the Arrows' Sally, and then a comedy of errors commenced. Each player missed the 14, the final ball, three times before Leonardo jammed it into the top left for the 8-7 win and a 2-0 series lead, earning mock applause from the home crowd. Sally salvaged game 3, winning 8-3 on a three-ball run-out to avoid the sweep. Leonardo, ranked #118 for Rotation, will play against Mams of the Viewpoint Sound Meteors in the bracket quarterfinals after his 2-1 series win.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Slinks v. Sweetheart. The red cue returns for this Accuracy series. Boston's Sweetheart took advantage of a miss by Harrison's Slinks in game 1, clinching a 3-4 victory with a successful shot to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The Specters' Slinks bounced back in a remarkably close game, staying scoreless until the final five balls, where the Swifts' Sweetheart had the most trouble, ending up with a narrow 2-3 loss as Slinks tied the series at 1. The players matched blow for blow throughout game 3, during regulation and through almost all of the overtime rack, until Slinks missed a bank attempt on the 9 toward the bottom left, giving Sweetheart the 2-3 win and 2-1 series win. Ranked #123 in Accuracy, Sweetheart's thrilling win pits her against Twinkie III of the Whitewater Shores in the bracket quarterfinals.

Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Jack v. Bryant. The red cue makes its last 7-ball appearance for the round in this series to end the morning. Pacific's Jack took game 1 on a three-ball run-out after mostly keeping an even pace with Maplewood's Bryant, taking a 1-0 series lead for the host. The Lumberjacks' Bryant cleaned up a poorly taken attempt from the Volcanoes' Jack on the 7 late in game 2, tapping it in the bottom left to tie the series at 1 game apiece. Bryant took game 3 on a three-ball run-out, including a distance shot on the 7 to the bottom left that he executed cleanly. The series went to Bryant 2-1, and his #132 ranked 7-ball bid will meet Puff I of the Modernistic Union in the bracket quarterfinals.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Twilight v. Wings. The next series will see the red cue wrap up its Rotation obligations for the round. Central's Twilight took two balls on the break in game 1 and never looked back, cruising to an 8-1 win over Pearl's Wings to take a 1-0 series lead with a dominant effort. The Surfers' Wings got luckier in game 2, as the Warriors' Twilight lost three balls on scratches to wipe out decent shots, allowing Wings to play a clean game and win 8-4 to tie the series at 1. Wings suffered a few scratches himself in game 3, allowing Twilight to pull into a lead. Still, Wings ran four-ball and had a winner wiped out by a scratch, allowing Twilight to tie the game again, but Wings stood strong and won 8-7 for a 2-1 series win. Ranked #132 for Rotation, Wings will match up with Eastside Sharks rookie Niki in the bracket quarterfinals.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Hoot v. Sierra. The blue cue is up again for 12-ball, finishing its round in the event in the eastern hills. Todavía's Sierra got off to the better start in game 1, running three balls early and into favorable positions, making life more difficult for Pronger's Hoot. Later on, Hoot removed his defense, and Sierra jumped on the chance to take the game, leading the series 1-0. The Stills' Sierra went up 2-0 in the series with a five-ball run that netted four balls after ending in a scratch from the break, and the Tridents' Hoot never caught up, losing quickly to the motivated Sierra. In game 3, Sierra had her best effort, quickly setting up her shots to complete a shutout in the game and a 3-0 sweep in the series over Hoot. The #119 ranked 12-ball player, Sierra will face lorde of the Commerce Tradewinds in the bracket quarterfinals.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Sugar v. Sprinkles. The blue cue is up for Accuracy, finishing its round on the bracket. Capital City's Sprinkles got crafty with defensive positioning at the end of game 1, and it worked, as she came from behind to top Web City's Sugar 2-3, for a 1-0 series lead. In game 2, the Sharpshooters' Sprinkles lived up to her team name, playing a strong game that buried the Spiders' Sugar very early on and last to a 2-5 victory for a 2-0 series lead for the visitor Sprinkles. In game 3, Sprinkles again dominated, winning 0-2 in a very tight and quick game, sweeping Sugar off the bracket with a 3-0 series win. The #127 ranked Accuracy player Sprinkles is on to Paige of the Queens Flames in the bracket quarterfinals.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Diddley v. Alyssa. The silver cue comes on for the last of its 9-ball this round. Maplewood's Diddley took the last two balls in game 1 to score a 1-0 series lead after the win, capitalizing on Alyssa of Oceanside losing her three-ball run with a short miss on the 8. The Lumberjacks' Diddley again used an error from the Waves' Alyssa in game 2 to get the win, as Alyssa missed contact on the 8, allowing Diddley to take the 8 and 9 from ball-in-hand to clinch the series at 2-0. Diddley did all of the work in game 3, as Alyssa didn't make either of her two shots, with Diddley claiming a 3-0 series after all of that work. Diddley, ranked #113 for 9-ball, will oppose Tigerette of the Commerce Tradewinds in the bracket quarterfinals.

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Charli XCX v. Sprinkles. The silver cue exits the first round of action with this Rotation series. Capital City's Sprinkles got off to a good start in game 1, and cruised to an 8-2 victory over Tysini rookie Charli, with Sprinkles persistently playing defense if no better option arose as she moved to 1-0 in the series. Game 2 was a lot closer, thanks to an early five-ball run by Charli of the Hummingbirds, but that was not enough to hold off Sprinkles, who cobbled a four-ball run to take the lead and eventually went to 2-0 in the series on an 8-6 victory from the Sharpshooters veteran. Sprinkles had to work a little more in an 8-5 win in game 3, as Charli rattled off a five-ball run to tie the game before Sprinkles shot a three-ball run-out for a 3-0 series win. Sprinkles, ranked #130 in Rotation, faces another rookie, Pedey of the Diamond Gems, in the bracket quarterfinals.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Hoot v. Sally. The last two series are both Accuracy with the red cue, beginning in the Eastern Hills. Game 1 ended up being a thriller, although not very close, as Pronger's Hoot shot a perfect run to take a 0-2 win over a determined but just slightly off Sally of Archtown. The Arrows' Sally did a much better job of shielding the Tridents' Hoot from good shots, causing him to err often, and Sally capitalized by taking the game 2-4 to tie the series at 1. Hoot absolutely fell apart in game 3, missing on five straight shots to lose to Sally 2-5, and it also gave Sally a 2-1 series win. Ranked #126 in Accuracy, Sally moves onto the bracket quarterfinals to play Goldy of the Everton Eagles.

HP Field Events Center, Eastside: Chelsea v. Debby Ryan. The final series of the opening round is this Accuracy series with the red cue. Southridge's Debby did a wonderful job in game 1, inducing a late miss by Eastside's Chelsea before burying the last ball to take the game 0-1 and take a 1-0 series lead. The Sharks' Chelsea tied the series at 1 with a 4-5 win in game 2, but the game was not as crisp as before, especially for the Defenders' Debby, who struggled to stay competitive despite losing by only one. Game 3 saw a complete reversal for Debby, who won 2-7 after a lazy ending inflated the score a bit, and Debby also took the series 2-1. Ranked #129 for Accuracy, Debby will play against Twinkie II of the Harrison Specters in the bracket quarterfinals.

That's all for B-level Round One. I expect to get a new schedule up before the end of the night. There will not be a standings update until the end of the B-level segment of the tournament. Also, I will be working on the new venue counter to help determine which facilities will host special events next summer. Expect SCL action tomorrow around midday, and more pool in the evening.
