This post covers the first eleven games of the third season of UPCL Cricket action. Expect similarly sized posts throughout the season as we progress toward the playoffs and the hunt for the Hutton Cup. We begin, as we will every week, in...
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: Mr. Snowman failed to get into an acceptable rhythm, starting the season on a quiet note with 28 points for Viewpoint Sound. Sally answered with 211 for Archtown, getting them going with a slight lead. Mams chipped only 36 for the Meteors, also failing to show any control over the bat. Sleepy B. made it look easy for the Arrows, blasting 972 to cement their lead at halfway. Zach poked 84 for Viewpoint Sound, but they still look like a deflated team so far. Ruby couldn't get the proper angle on her turn, scoring just 64 for Archtown. Kelly took a little redemption for the Meteors, posting 227 as they lost with 375 total, an embarrassing season opener. Dusky iced the easy Arrows victory with 343, giving them a final of 1590 in a big win. Archtown's likely bounce-back season starts at 1-0 while a regression-ready Viewpoint Sound falls to 0-1.
McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: Valencia got things going with 219 for Golden, a solid season debut. Delila slugged 480 for Atlantic, showing early signs of improvement after rejoining the team in the draft. Dusty answered with 239 for the Pilots, keeping them in the hunt. Amber faltered with 66 for the Pirates, leaving them vulnerable. Strut managed only 153 for Golden, failing to fully cash in on their opportunity. Americus endeared herself further to her new team, slicing 393 to restore a healthy Atlantic lead. The Pilots ended up with a loss when A. Charlton hit only 72, giving them a final of 683. Dominic tacked on 401 to give the Pirates a final of 1340 in a surprisingly strong win. Atlantic begins at 1-0 as they may start to be taken as a legitimate dark horse team, while Golden gets a weak start to go to 0-1.
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: These two teams provide us with our first divisional match, as well as a Southeastern Rivalry game. Crystal hit 296 for Queens in a decent opening attack. Patches blew that out of the water, starting Boston off with 1023 in a big turn. Kayla couldn't react for the Flames, taking just 49 points as they fall into serious trouble. Puff II likewise went small for the Swifts, adding 113 to the lead. Max knocked 207 for Queens, attempting to chip away at the deficit. Gradley smacked 432 for Boston, padding the lead to a comfortable margin. Paige took 192 for the Flames, well below what she needed as they fell with 744. Sweetheart finished off the Swifts' victory with 304 for a grand total of 1872. Boston struck big time against a division rival to start the season at 1-0, while Queens took a large setback for an 0-1 record.
Capital City SuperCenter: Slinks ripped 395 for Harrison, getting her personal comeback season going in fine form after nearly getting cut in the offseason. Chris took 328 for Capital City, keeping the game close in its early stages. Twinkie II kept the pace high with 355 for the Specters, as a late blooming breakout campaign last season appears to spill over into this season. Missy tripped up a bit with 208 for the Sharpshooters. Highly hyped Harrison rookie Sydney drilled 385 for the team, adding onto their tenuous lead. Sprinkles let Capital City slip farther behind with a 112-point output. Brownie closed out the game with 482 to put the Specters at a total of 1617. Dani managed 215 for the Sharpshooters, but they ended up with a loss at 863. Harrison is the first road team with a win, going to 1-0 while putting the notoriously slow-starting Capital City team at 0-1.
Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: Boots did wonderfully to save her appearance, spiking a ball off the ground in front of her wicket and into the back 6s, but she eventually flamed out at 203 for Southridge. Central's Twilight posted a strong 506, looking much more steady in her third cricket season. Reigning Rookie of the Year Debby smashed 697 for the Defenders, keeping the game wild. Dustin got stuffed with 28 points for the Warriors, an effective shutdown of a dangerous player. J. Garcia chipped a minor output of 112 points for Southridge, maintaining the lead. Noelle pulled Central back into the game by swatting 428. Shaggy shot straight back for the Defenders, ripping 492 to put them at 1504 overall. Gizmo pulled in 319 for the Warriors, but the defending Hutton Cup champions fell with 1281 total. Southridge took a gutsy win for a 1-0 record, leaving Central at 0-1.
Nike Field, Commerce: Watermelon led off with 310 for Pearl, a solid start for a player who finally gets to settle in with a team. Commerce's Tigerette batted 230 as the game stays relatively close. Neopolitan had only 111 for the Surfers. Her twin sister Ice Cream bashed 590 for the Tradewinds, pulling her team into a lead in the always-interesting sibling battle. Wings kept Pearl in a downward spiral as he hit only 120 for the struggling visitors. Lionel crushed another 519 for Commerce, putting them in full control. Cowzart provided a glimmer of hope for the Surfers by scoring 359, but they took the loss with 900 points. Lorde belted 894 for the Tradewinds, finishing their win at 2233. Commerce used their big victory to go to 1-0, while Pearl is down at 0-1 early in the season.
The Intel Pitch, Diamond: Patches wasted no time in setting the tone for Boston, crushing 840 in the lead-off role. Smokey took 240 back for Diamond, getting stalled by a bad bounce. Puff II ripped another 647 for the Swifts, adding onto their lead significantly. Citrus hit 271, misreading a rolling ball that ended her output for the Gems. Gradley tacked on 475 for Boston, as they continue to feed off the efforts of their captain. Diamond's rookie Pedey had a poor debut, hitting just 28 for the hosts as the game likely slipped from their reach. Sweetheart finished the Swifts' performance with 359, for a total of 2321 in a high-octane likely victory. Cassandra had a reasonable 264 for the Gems, but they officially took the loss with a final score of 803. Boston improves to 2-0 on the season, while Diamond is off to an 0-1 start.
HP Field, Eastside: Panda got jammed on his third swing, taking just 21 points in an ugly start for Southern. Graham tried to deflect a shot to the back scoring zones, but took too much pace off the ball, settling for a score of 195 for Eastside. Shannon swung 298 for the Monarchs, pulling them back into the game. Chelsea got most of it back for the Sharks, hitting 280 in a quick showing. Kirstin replied with 336 for Southern, a strong debut game for the rookie that has her team in the hunt for this game. Taylor took advantage of replay rules for the league to produce 457 for Eastside, giving them a stronger lead. Nicole got victimized by a high bounce, ending her turn at 136 while the Monarchs suffered a loss with a total of 791 as they look reluctant to shake the troubles of last season. Sharks rookie Niki suffered a similar ending, but her 200 points iced a victory for the hosts with a final of 1132. Eastside gets off to a 1-0 record, while Southern stumbles to 0-1.
Chevrolet Field, Everton: Slinks couldn't recreate her first effort of the season, starting this game with 120 for Harrison after a failed backhand attempt. Goldy put a ball a little too high for Everton, failing to capitalize as she hit just 71. Twinkie II pounded 568 for the Specters, giving them a sizable lead. Puff III went undeterred, crushing 570 for the Eagles to keep things even from before. Harrison's Sydney faltered in hitting only 69, putting their slight lead in jeopardy. Cleo lined 271 for Everton, giving them a modest lead heading into the lineup-anchoring players. Brownie grabbed 319 for the Specters, forcing a response as the visitors end the game at 1076. Blizzard cobbled 176 for the Eagles, giving them a final of 1088 for the closest win of the young season at a 12-point margin. Everton's late game heroics give them a 1-0 start to the season, while Harrison slides to 1-1.
Toyota Pitch, Freedom: Tigerette saved her game early with impressive bat work, and then rallied with devastating swings to give Commerce 400 to open with. Jasmine took a much lighter approach for Freedom, and it proved costly when she got stopped at 101. Ice Cream took a bad read on her final swing, scoring just 60 points for the Tradewinds. Stinky took advantage of the opportunity to shrink the deficit, knocking 280 for the Cascades. Lionel slugged 535 for Commerce, repairing much of the damage done to their lead. Roxy fired back with 443 for Freedom, keeping the game within a reasonable range. Lorde erased all of that progress by hitting 429 to ice the Tradewinds offense at 1424. Nikolai couldn't shut things down for the Cascades, producing only 112 as they lost with 936. Commerce is now 2-0, while Freedom falls to 0-1 to begin their season.
Amazon Field, Golden: The first part of the week wraps up with this battle. Panda took 493 for Southern this time, a much better showing. Valencia countered with 215 for Golden, cutting the deficit slightly. Shannon stumbled with 128 for the Monarchs, leaving their lead a bit vulnerable. Dusty did well to preserve her wicket when it got in front of her on a technical glitch, blasting 1158 while working mostly with lifted shots. Kirstin took 308 back for Southern, a solid effort but barely denting the deficit as it stands. Strut kept it simple, striking 240 for Golden to maintain the lead. Nicole's 267 gave the Monarchs a respectable total of 1196, but they'd end up taking the loss anyway. A. Charlton smacked another 535 for the Pilots, producing their 2148-point final for the win. Golden is now 1-1 on the year, while Southern drops to 0-2.
Part 2 on the way, likely for Friday or Saturday.
