Heart of the Game 13-ball Tournament - Round 4

We're here for the last round of three-game series in the competition. The first of 16 series today is...

Marsell v. Dewey. Two league players with similar skill sets collide with the silver cue to start. Marsell struck early in game 1 with solids, but he couldn't make it hold up after missing contact. Dewey took over at the end with a four-ball run-out for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Dewey struck on the break in game 2, but his positioning let him down later in the game. Marsell had a crafty three-ball run to get close, and then potted the last two balls over two turns at the end for the win, tying the series at 1 with his forward-thinking play. Marsell had the lead for much of game 3, but he couldn't quite get set at the bottom side, and Dewey roared back with a three-ball run-out for the win to take the series 2-1. Dewey will play tomorrow in the fifth round.

Nikolai v. Nibbles. Another pair of good league players goes head-to-head with the red cue. Nikolai had a decent break in game 1, but Nibbles made him look silly as the game progressed, working around the table with ease. Nibbles took advantage of an error by Nikolai to pot the 8 to the top left for a 1-0 series lead. Nikolai had some offense in game 2, but he ruined his chance at the win by blocking a pocket he needed with the 8. Nibbles played patiently, but got the win for free when Nikolai accidentally tapped the 8 in turns later. Nibbles secured the series at 2-0. Nikolai struck first in a mostly even game 3, but Nibbles pulled back near the end and made three balls over his last two turns to get the win for a 3-0 series sweep. Nibbles is in the fifth round.

Panda v. Kiwi. League captains get the blue cue's first series today. Panda had a five-ball run late in game 1, but he had spent too much time setting it up and couldn't beat Kiwi's top-side defense. Kiwi patiently finished the win for a 1-0 series lead. Kiwi had no trouble on attack in game 2, making five balls over her first two turns before going for positioning. Panda made a few shots here and there, but he stood no chance against Kiwi's attack, which ended with a pair of shots for the win. Kiwi clinched the series at 2-0. Kiwi had a slower game 3 performance, waiting for Panda to remove most of his balls from the table. Kiwi had a chance to cut the 8 to the top side, but she missed, and Panda made a pair of shots for the win to avoid the sweep. Kiwi's 2-1 series win gets her a spot in the fifth round.

Strut v. Bear. The silver cue is back in action with this series between league veterans. Strut didn't have the most efficient offense in game 1, but he still had plenty of time to beat Bear, as the latter didn't have much of an attack at all. Strut is up 1-0 in the series. Both players took their time in attack in game 2, with strategizing and set-up shots more frequent in the early going. Strut then made a four-ball run, which Bear matched before his missed kick on the 8. Strut converted the 8 to the top right for the win and a 2-0 series lead. Bear finally found a way to get a win in game 3, just holding off Strut long enough at the end to avoid the sweep. Strut won the series 2-1, and he is off to the fifth round.

Irsyad Sudjana v. Waluigi. A strategic unaffiliated player takes on the league's Cinderella entry with the red cue. Waluigi had a lead over Irsyad early in game 1, and he made it hold with a late four-ball run-out after Irsyad had briefly pulled even. Waluigi owns a 1-0 series lead. Irsyad and Waluigi both converged on the top side after a quick attack early turned into a positioning battle. Irsyad got the better of it, and he made the 8 to the bottom right for the win to tie the series at 1. Irsyad struck on the break, but he got himself into some bad positions later on and had a few too many errors to hold off Waluigi's relentless, average-paced attack. Waluigi kept a cool head and got the win to take the 2-1 series win, putting him in the fifth round as his feel-good story continues.

Azul Mora v. Gal. Another unaffiliated player will try his slick moves against a third-year league member with the blue cue. Gal had the lead in game 1 for most of the battle, but a scratch set her back in the middle, and Azul did just enough late in the game to earn the win for a 1-0 series lead. Gal had a bit better of an attack in game 2, taking the lead early and beating Azul to the mutually needed bottom side after Azul fouled on his last ball. Gal then took a pair of shots to get the win, tying the close series at 1. Gal again took the lead in game 3, needing just the top left to get onto the 8 at the end. Azul had scratched on a previous turn, but he stormed back with a four-ball run-out to swipe the win for a 2-1 series win at the end. Azul moves on to a fifth round series with Nibbles.

Solaris v. Ruby. A talented young player meets a proven winner as league talents clash with the silver cue. Solaris made one of each on the game 1 break, choosing solids to build his five-ball run. Ruby answered with a pair, but she'd get the win when Solaris hit a spinning bank shot that sent the 8 to the top left early. Ruby is up 1-0 in the series thanks to Solaris' misfortunes. Ruby made one of each on her break in game 2, and then scratched on the next shot. Solaris got down to his last ball with great haste, sacrificing position for his last ball at the top side. Ruby overcame an additional scratch and rallied for the win, the 8 dropping in the top side to seal the series at 2-0. Solaris again popped up with the lead in game 3, but positioning failed him outright this time, and Ruby passed him at the end to earn the win for a 3-0 series sweep. Ruby continues to rack up wins as she heads to the fifth round.

Louvel Lefevre v. Barasa Contee. The only series with two unaffiliated players goes with the red cue. Louvel had a good start in game 1, but when he made one of Barasa's balls, the whole game changed. Barasa took over the offense and easily beat Louvel on the 8, taking a 1-0 series lead in the process. Game 2 was a similar game, although Barasa struck first and played well throughout this time. Louvel, learning nothing from before, potted Barasa's defensive blocker at the bottom right, allowing Barasa to ignite a four-ball run-out two turns later for the win. Barasa clinched the series at 2-0. Louvel had his best performance in game 3, but he continually missed on late shots, buying Barasa enough time to rally from far back for the win. Barasa gladly took the win for a 3-0 series sweep, putting him into the fifth round.

Lexi v. Lucio Adame. The blue cue completes the third cycle here with two of the toughest remaining players. Lexi started with a three-ball run from the break, but she went cold soon after that, and Lucio had an easy time after that. Lucio did scratch once, but he overcame it with a four-ball run before making the 8 on his next turn for the 1-0 series lead with his win. Lexi had a stronger lead late in game 2, but she couldn't align her last two shots at all. Lucio slowly pulled his way back into the game before finding a three-ball run to go ahead. Lucio made a pair on his next turn for the win, securing the series at 2-0. Lucio struck quickly in game 2, but he never found position at the side pockets. Lexi made five balls over her last three turns, earning the win to avoid the sweep. Lucio took the series 2-1, and he looks to continue dominating in the fifth round.

Mams v. Smokey. A former captain meets a current one as league players battle with the silver cue. Mams ripped a ball in on the break in game 1, and then beat Smokey for their mutually needed top side at the end. Smokey came close, but couldn't stop Mams from running away with the win at the end for a 1-0 series lead. Mams struck on the break again in game 2, but Smokey made due with better positioning for an early three-ball run. Mams got that damage back, but Smokey continued to exploit his positioning well, winning on a four-ball run-out to tie the series at 1. Smokey made a couple from the break in game 3, but still needed a massive run at the end to hold off Mams, who nearly played defense at the bottom right. Smokey won with the last four shots, earning the 2-1 series win and a chance to meet Strut in the fifth round.

Spice v. Sage. The Victoria Spurs teammates clash with the red cue in this series. Spice never really got a handle on her positioning in game 1, while Sage showed extremely high quality with her late shots. Sage had no trouble converting a pair on her final turn for the win and 1-0 series lead. Spice put up a much better fight in game 2, but Sage's attempt at the 8 knocked Spice out of position. Spice's response was to bank the 11 in such a way that she scratched and illegally potted the 8, gifting the win to Sage, who secured the series at 2-0 thanks to Spice's double blunder. Sage had a four-ball run from the break to start game 3, but she would fall on the next turn, illegally bumping the 8 into the bottom right to gift a win back to Spice. Sage can thank her pure win in game 1 for her 2-1 series win that sets her up to meet Waluigi in the fifth round.

Natal Badillo v. Twilight. The blue cue is up as a strategist unaffiliated player meets a strong league captain. Natal and Twilight had a quintessential back-and-forth game, especially after late scratches for each player. Natal got onto the 8 first but missed contact on a kick play, and Twilight finally made a pair of shots for the win and 1-0 series lead. Twilight made two stripes and a solid on the break in game 2, and she will regret spotting Natal that ball, as he had positioning on her at the end of the game without another shot to take. Twilight tried her best, but Natal was better this time, tying the series at 1 with his win. Twilight got down to her last ball without trouble, but she never found a way to break Natal's defense. He did it himself eventually, making three balls over his last two turns with a bank on the 8 to the bottom side for the win. Natal's upset 2-1 series win gets him to the fifth round against another league star, Kiwi.

Sarah v. Slinks. A rookie faces a resurgent league veteran as the silver cue starts the fifth cycle. Sarah started with a four-ball run in game 1, but she wouldn't have to pick up the win herself. Slinks used the 8 defensively, but when Sarah scratched late, Slinks accidentally tapped the 8 in early on the next turn. Sarah holds a 1-0 series lead. Sarah had a good start again in game 2, but she couldn't win a positioning race later on, as Slinks used a strategic scratch to great success. Slinks then kicked the 8 to the bottom right for the win, tying the series at 1. Slinks found herself in a very similar finishing scenario in game 3, but this time she lacked positioning or a strategic scratch to get her there. Sarah needed only two turns to go for the win, taking the series 2-1 at the same time. Sarah will meet the ever-dangerous Ruby in the fifth round.

Shaggy v. Precious. After a break, two of the league's most active veterans battle in the red cue's final series. Precious had a slightly easier time with positioning and converting her shots in game 1, although Shaggy did make a good effort to catch up at the end. Precious held on for the win to take a 1-0 series lead. Shaggy struck first with stripes in game 2, but she had trouble attacking the left corners. Precious didn't have any big run this time, but she found a way ahead and got the win to secure the series at 2-0. Precious made a pair on the break in game 3, but her positioning was awful after that, and Shaggy received the win when Precious accidentally made the 8 prematurely. Precious won the series 2-1, setting her up to face Lucio Adame in the fifth round.

Martin Badillo v. Jake. The last unaffiliated player to play faces a league veteran in the blue cue's round finale. Martin had a crafty break in game 1, but it was his mid-game play that got him ahead. Jake had a chance to rally at the end, but he missed contact on a long tap-in, and Martin took the 8 at the top right for the 1-0 series lead instead. Martin had a curveball break again in game 2, but Jake got around him with stripes and outplayed Martin in the late game to pick up the win. Jake tied the series at 1, setting up a critical final game. Martin had a chance at a big finishing run, but it ended with three downed balls, as he rattled the 1 out of the bottom right. Jake stayed calm despite the scare, and he won two turns later with the 8 going in the bottom left for the 2-1 series win. Jake took the series 2-1, and will face his fourth unaffiliated player, Barasa Contee, in his fifth round match.

Klaus v. Crystal. The final three-game series is with the silver cue between good league players. Klaus had a hot start and a successful finish as well, capitalizing on Crystal's late scratch to take control of game 1. Klaus ended with a perfectly weighted bank on the 8 to the bottom right for the 1-0 series lead. Klaus had his chances in a chaotic game 2 effort, but it didn't match up with what Crystal could do. She played a patient game, striking where she could, and then she pinned Klaus out of position multiple times before rallying to the win to tie the series at 1. Disaster decided game 3 and the series, with Klaus' third turn ending in an unintentional potting of the 8, gifting the win and 2-1 series win away to Crystal. In the fifth round, Crystal faces Dewey in a massive rivalry for their two teams.

Tomorrow, UPCL Premier begins its week 5 schedule, followed by the fifth round in full. All of these series are five games long going forward, with the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final scheduled for Saturday currently. The cue order for the final fifteen series is reversed, so as to set the red cue up for being in the final.

Elite Cricket 2019 - Week 5

We're back with more from the Elite division. We expect to play four games a day from Tuesday to Thursday. First up...

GE Stadium, Southridge: The Defenders have an unenviable three games over the first four of the week, with Debby sitting against a Tridents team resting Spot. Precious started with a fierce 833 for Pronger, the captain continuing her long productive stretch in this appearance. Bianca had a better pace but she fell quicker too, ending with 575 for Southridge on the first turn. Zach clubbed 668 for the Tridents on the second attack, doing well in padding their lead. Stephanie couldn't find a better pace for the Defenders, exiting at an alright 376. Potter faded a bit with 274 for Pronger, but their lead remains fairly safe. Wario chipped a swing high at the end of his turn, gaining only a small amount with his 326. Lize kept a conservative swing for the Tridents, tallying 520 to give them a total of 2295. Caitlin had a modest 308 for the Defenders, confirming their loss at 1585. Pronger is back to winning at 8-4, while Southridge's winless stretch has them at 0-8.

Kraft Crowns Park, Royal: The Crowns will sit Brownie after a recent poor performance, while the Stills elect to rest Bells for this meeting. Ruby picked up 379 for Todavía in a rather pedestrian start for the veteran. Kayla shot back with 553 for Royal on the first turn, giving them the initial lead in a game that could still go either way. Sierra had a rough outing with only 308 for the Stills, far lower than her usual team-leading performances. Jake had a low pace at first, but he found his way to 650 for the Crowns, giving them a stable lead at the midway point. Easter tried to rally Todavía back into the game, but she left with 441, unable to cover the visitors' deficit. Nightfur slapped another 644 for Royal, extending their lead heading into the final turn. Prism had the chance to do well, but her 341 left the Stills short at 1469 in the loss. Cassie had a steady 397 for the Crowns at the end, capping their win at 2244. Royal is up to 2-9, but that's still far back of the next closest team, the 2-4 Todavía squad.

Audi Knights Pitch, Terrace City: The Defenders take their show on the road without Wario, while the league-leading Knights rest Kiwi for this meeting. Bianca lifted 600 for Southridge on the first turn of the game, showing a bit of fight despite their winless status. Jennifer attacked relentlessly for Terrace City, smashing 902 to give the hosts a lead. Debby had 357 for the Defenders to lightly cover the deficit, putting them in a vulnerable spot. Oreo added a bit more to the Knights lead with 450 on her turn, keeping them noticeably ahead at the halfway mark. Stephanie had a little too much energy for Southridge, popping a ball up to end with 258 on her turn. Quincy persisted with 725 for Terrace City, giving their lead a significant boost with a player each to go. Caitlin couldn't save the game with 361 for the Defenders, sending them to another loss at 1576. Melissa had a pacey 414 to cap the Knights' win at 2491. Terrace City is up to 10-2 this season, while Southridge drops to 0-9 with another game on the way.

GE Stadium, Southridge: The Defenders quickly return home and give Caitlin a game off to cycle through their roster, while the visiting Waves sit Jason V. Snuggle posted 531 for Oceanside in a positive opening turn for the second-place side. Bianca's good run of form came to a close with a mediocre 249 for Southridge this time, the heavy schedule weighing on the youngster. Celestia barely outplayed her cousin with 272 for the Waves, keeping things fairly steady. Debby got some of the deficit back with 450 for the Defenders, but they remain behind for now. Josie pushed 595 for Oceanside on an impressive turn to help the visitors strengthen their lead. Stephanie appeared sharp at first, but a desperate save ruined her pace and she bowed out at only 267 for Southridge. Dewey supplied another 537 for the Waves at the end, producing their final score of 1935. Wario couldn't come close for the Defenders, his 298 leaving them at 1264 in another loss. Oceanside rises to 8-3, while Southridge has lost ten straight to start the year 0-10.

Verizon Field, Pacific: The Flames' first game of the week sees their captain Crystal forced to sit out for rest, while the Volcanoes choose to bench Cowzart for rest to end a three-game home stand. Violetta has yet to really sustain a breakout at lead-off for Queens, hitting a simple 321 this time. Starlight fired back with a crisp 515 for Pacific, giving her team a slight edge early on. Briana hit 352 for the Flames in a reasonable turn to cover the deficit. Ms. Kitty showed some fatigue with 292 for the Volcanoes, causing them to lose a bit of their lead at the halfway point. Mario kept things close with 341 for Queens, edging them ahead at least temporarily. Twinkie I lost more ground for Pacific, her pacey start going to waste on a high hit that stalled her at 235. Hannah had a middling 227 for the Flames, the choppy game seeing the visitors close at 1241. Leonette ripped 775 for the Volcanoes at the end, sealing their win at 1817. Pacific rises to 6-4, while Queens dips to 4-3.

Henry Ford Memorial Stadium, Pronger: Sierra will sit in the fourth of a five-game road trip for the Stills, while the Tridents are interested in resting Potter this time. Ruby found a great pace and attacked with 682 for Todavía to start them off in fantastic form. Precious actually had a bad turn for Pronger, managing only 177 in an unusual decline in production. Bells added a hefty 917 to the Stills lead on the second attack, putting them in a very comfortable position. Spot answered with 449 for the Tridents, making only a little progress against the steep deficit. Easter had a rough 208 for Todavía, missing a swing to create the mediocre output. Zach made some gains with 490 for Pronger, but it would take a massive push at the end to overcome this deficit. Prism made sure to protect the Stills lead anyway, paddling 777 to give them a total of 2584, a season high. Lize maintained a fiery pace with 526 for the Tridents, but they lost with 1642, their third straight home loss. Todavía improves to 3-4, while Pronger dips to 8-5.

Pepsi Prestige Park, Lighton: In the second game of the Stills' doubleheader, Ruby is on the bench for rest, while the Prestige have Acorn sitting out for the first time this season. Sierra returned from her game off with 564 for Todavía, showing a sharpness with her swings lacking from her previous appearance. Citrus fired back with 680 for Lighton, putting the hosts ahead initially. Bells tried to maintain a high pace, but she clipped the boundary at 357 to pull the Stills ahead narrowly. Spirit added a little more with 445 for the Prestige, giving their lead a bit more cushion. Easter helped Todavía keep the pressure up, covering the deficit with her 522. Nicole got caught on her backhand for Lighton very early in the turn, ending with just 98 as the hosts fall behind with a player each to go. Prism lashed 694 for the Stills at the end, another good finish to bring them to 2137 total. Shiny slapped 554 for the Prestige at the end, but they would suffer a loss at 1777. Todavía is on the rise to 4-4, pulling even with the 3-3 Lighton team they just defeated.

GE Stadium, Southridge: The Defenders cycle through their lineup and give Bianca this game off, while Neopolitan will take a second straight game of rest for the Surfers. Watermelon set the tone with 855 for Pearl right at the start, dampening the hopes of the hosts immediately. Debby offset a significant portion of the deficit with 600 for Southridge, but they are still behind. Boots lacked pace for the Surfers, managing only 272 on the second attack that weakens the visitors' lead. Stephanie failed to capitalize for the Defenders, her stretch of iffy play continuing with just 227 here. Bright got Pearl's offense back on track, lining 550 to boost their lead once again. Wario had an aggressive attack but fell at a reasonable 379 for Southridge when one of his swings went too high. Beth chopped 476 for the Surfers at the end to cap their offense at 2153. Caitlin fell at a poor 211 for the Defenders, confirming their loss at 1417. Pearl is up to 4-4 while Southridge drops to 0-11. The Defenders have also announced the firing of their coach amid one of the worst starts in league history.

Toyota Pitch, Freedom: The Cascades play their fourth of a six-game home stand with Roxy on the bench, a long overdue move, while Jennifer rests for the Knights. Kiwi didn't look great in her return to Terrace City's lineup, exiting with a modest 305. Jasmine jammed her way to 652 for Freedom at the starts, putting the hosts ahead after a turn with a good performance. Oreo also failed to perform well for the Knights, missing a swing that caused her to end with a meager 65 points. Nikolai made a strong supporting attack with 572 for the Cascades, building their lead to a good height. Quincy couldn't make a breakout for Terrace City, his 251 likely confirming a tough loss for the division leaders. Stripes put herself at the head of the Freedom attack with 725 on her turn, extending the lead again. Melissa had a decent 410 for the Knights, but they took their first road loss of the year at 1031. Stinky kept it simple with 341 for the Cascades, icing their win at 2290. Freedom's upset victory gets them to 4-3, while Terrace City retains the division lead at 10-3.

Sony Stadium, Queens: These two teams meet for the second time this week. Cowzart will again sit for the visitors, while the Flames give Mario rest after convenient scheduling. Starlight had the pace but none of the longevity, falling at a mere 195 for Pacific. Crystal answered with 647 for Queens, a hefty attack in her return to the lineup after missing the previous game. Ms. Kitty got some back with 476 for the Volcanoes, which barely covered the deficit. Violetta upped the attack for the Flames on the second turn, lashing 793 to strengthen their lead. Twinkie I got a good portion of that damage back with 674 for Pacific, but they still trail. Briana pushed Queens' offense higher with 834 on her turn, continuing to protect their advantage. Leonette again failed to attack well, hitting a pathetic 48 for the Volcanoes to seal their loss at 1393. Hannah tapped 355 more for the Flames at the end, completing their win at 2629 overall. Queens gets revenge, rising to 5-3, while Pacific slips back to 6-5.

Toyota Pitch, Freedom: The Cascades continue their six-game home stand with Nikolai forced out of the lineup again for rest, while the busy Defenders close their week with Stephanie on the bench. Bianca chopped 553 for Southridge before missing a swing and taking out her wicket on the backswing. Jasmine lacked pace for much of her turn, leaving her at 418 after a high swing. Debby was too slow on a swing, causing a ball to dip under her bat to end her turn at just 177 for the Defenders. Roxy couldn't take advantage of that slip, hitting only 176 herself as the Cascades stay slightly behind. Wario didn't extend Southridge's lead by much with his 245, a mediocre effort in a game filled with them. Stripes got Freedom out of their scoring rut with 550, pulling them ahead with a player each to go. Caitlin set a challenge late with 753 for the Defenders to put them at 1728 overall at the end. Stinky lost it with 135 for the Cascades, their losing total resting at 1279. Southridge is finally off the blocks at 1-11, while Freedom drops to 4-4.

Audi Knights Pitch, Terrace City: The Knights will again be without their captain Kiwi in the week 5 finale, while the Tridents sit their captain Precious for the first time this season for rest. Spot had the pace to go big but exited at 391 for Pronger instead in a reasonable start to the game. Jennifer had a similar turn, but she sent a ball too high earlier, giving her only 295 for Terrace City. Zach popped 534 for the Tridents on the second attack, building their lead a little more. Oreo bounced back with 521 for the Knights, mitigating the damage to keep the hosts close at the midway mark. Potter kept Pronger's offense steady with 531 on his turn, resetting the challenge for the hosts. Quincy made a small gain with 543 for Terrace City, leaving the result for the final players to determine. Lize slipped a bit with a late missed swing, but her 481 brought the Tridents to a total of 1937. Melissa couldn't complete a comeback, her poor 176 leaving the Knights in a loss with 1535. Pronger pulled off an impressive upset to get to 9-5, while Terrace City is just a game ahead at 10-4 after the tough week.

That's all for this week of Elite. Premier will begin tomorrow with 4-6 games, and will finish the week likely on Sunday.

Heart of the Game 13-ball Tournament - Round 3 Day 2

We complete the third round today with another 16 series. First up...

Louvel Lefevre v. Rana Naqvi. Unaffiliated players known for their slick shooting begin with the blue cue today. Louvel started with a five-ball run from the break in game 1, also making two balls for Rana. Louvel couldn't strike again after a scratch, and Rana patiently worked his way ahead and earned the win for a 1-0 series lead. Rana had the first offense in game 2, making five balls over two turns but never getting a clear look on his last ball. Louvel bounced back quickly, setting up and converting his last five shots over two turns to get the win that tied the series at 1. Louvel and Rana played an even game 3, with Rana's late scratch setting him too far behind as Louvel tapped the 8 into the bottom right for the win. Louvel won the series 2-1 to earn his spot in the fourth round.

Klaus v. Rodas Cazares. A strong league third-year takes on a star unaffiliated player with the silver cue. Klaus made a ball on the break with solids, and then he set himself up for later. Rodas tried to set-up and make shots at the same time, but Klaus shut him down with a five-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. Klaus had a slower start in game 2, but he made a three-ball run with stripes on his second turn. Rodas struggled to make any shots, and Klaus didn't need much time for a second push to finish the game. Klaus did well at the end, clinching the series at 2-0. Klaus had some chances in game 3, but a pair of scratches wiped out most of his offense. Rodas played his best game of the series, pressuring Klaus the whole time as he earned the win to avoid a sweep. Klaus takes a 2-1 series win to earn the right to face Crystal in the fourth round.

Zdenko Jansky v. Spice. The red cue's first series of the day has a crafty unaffiliated player against a league captain. Zdenko looked alright with a stripe on the break, but Spice wove a five-ball run on her first turn to take the lead. Zdenko would receive two gifts from Spice, but a scratch ended his chance at the win, as Spice tapped the 8 to the bottom right to go up 1-0 in the series. Game 2 was a bit closer, as Zdenko did a bit more before reverting to a defensive shape as Spice took good positioning for her last shots. Spice would get the win on a simple three-ball run-out, securing the series at 2-0. Spice lost her precise touch in game 3, and she looked a bit lost as the filler game dragged on. Zdenko got the positioning he needed at the end, taking the win to cut the series to a 2-1 win for Spice, who will face her Victoria Spurs teammate Sage in the fourth round.

Nibbles v. Cowzart. Coastal rivals go at it with the blue cue to begin the second cycle. Cowzart had a couple of chances to ignite a massive run on solids in game 1, but he flubbed the first shot and never made his last ball as Nibbles cautiously and casually rallied to the win for a 1-0 series lead. Nibbles began with a four-ball run from the break with a bit of collateral damage along the way. Cowzart never mustered much offense, and didn't cover the first damage before Nibbles converted a three-ball run-out for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Nibbles had some offense in game 3, but Cowzart stole the show after Nibbles scratched near the end. Cowzart's smart plays helped him build a three-ball run-out to salvage a win, although Nibbles still took the series 2-1 to get to the fourth round.

Leandro Gamboa v. Jake. A resilient unaffiliated player meets a sparky league veteran with the silver cue. Leandro had two stripes in the same pocket on the break, forcing him to take the suit to avoid gifting Jake any shots. Jake wouldn't need the help, taking the better suit of solids and working his way to a win for a 1-0 series lead. Leandro had the better of play in game 2, burying a three-ball run early and maintaining good positioning. Jake had pressure late in the game, but Leandro maneuvered out of trouble with a four-ball run-out for the win to tie the series at 1. Jake fell behind quickly in game 3, but Leandro made a critical mistake when he scratched on his last ball. Leandro never had a clear chance to overcome that scratch, and Jake slowly found the win to take the series 2-1.

Noppadon Gruemor v. Mams. A strong unaffiliated player meets an average league player with the red cue. Both players had some issues with under-hitting their shots, none worse than the shot Mams pulled wide of the 8 at tap-in range near the bottom right. Noppadon got off lucky this time as he made the 8, taking a 1-0 series lead in a sloppy win. Noppadon would not be so lucky in game 2, as his poor play was not excused by Mams' misses this time. Mams found her shots when she needed to, holding Noppadon off for the win at the end to tie the series at 1. Mams attacked much faster early in game 3, preventing Noppadon from getting close to the 8 as he had to use defense. The strategy failed for Noppadon when Mams got a clear look at the 8 near the top right, taking the win for a 2-1 series win. Mams is set to face Smokey in the fourth round.

Mitchell v. Nikolai. A league sophomore takes on one of the strongest rivals the league can offer with the blue cue. Mitchell made a stripe on the game 1 break, but a mixture of bad positioning and a scratch prevented him from finishing well. Instead, Nikolai took the lead and kicked the 8 to the top right for a win and a 1-0 series lead. Nikolai played better at the start of game 2, weaving through a tough distribution pretty well. Mitchell pushed back, but Nikolai had the brilliant four-ball run-out at the end with two tough shots in a small space, a cut on the 15, and a perfectly banked double-kiss on the 8 to the bottom side. Nikolai earned the win to secure the series at 2-0. Game 3 went by in a blur, with Mitchell making a four-ball run early on, answered by Nikolai's five-ball run. Nikolai got onto the 8 first, but he missed at the bottom right, and Mitchell rallied on a three-ball run-out for the win. Nikolai settles for a 2-1 series win to give him a fourth round meeting with Nibbles.

Barasa Contee v. Strawberry. The silver cue brings us to halfway today with this series. Strawberry had a good attack to get onto the 8 in game 1, but needed Barasa to rally all the way back and scratch while potting the 8 to take the win. Strawberry's sloppy finish went unpunished as she takes a 1-0 series lead. Strawberry took forever to claim a suit in game 2, and then proceeded to mangle many of her shots. Barasa was hardly better, but he managed to avoid Strawberry's biggest mistake. Strawberry accidentally made the 11-8 combination prematurely to the top left, returning Barasa's favor from game 1 to tie the series at 1. Barasa found his skill in game 3, making a couple balls from the break and pounding in a nice three-ball run-out at the end when Strawberry couldn't create a defensive position. Barasa is one of few unaffiliated players in the fourth round, facing Louvel Lefevre.

Natal Badillo v. Hershey. A tactical unaffiliated player meets a hard-hitting league player with the red cue. Natal made a pair of stripes and a solid on the game 1 break, but both players were shaky at mid-game. Hershey had his balls in position before brutally missing a shot, and Natal took over from here to earn the win for a 1-0 series lead. Natal led off well again in game 2, and Hershey played fairly well in the early going, but both players struggled on their final ball and the 8. Natal eventually slammed the 8 down in the top left to finish off a win, clinching the series at 2-0. Natal simply outplayed Hershey in game 3, doing just enough at the end to hold off any threat of Hershey making a comeback. Natal swept the series 3-0 and will face one of the league's best in Twilight in the fourth round.

Kiwi v. Mario. The blue cue begins cycle four with this series between league veterans. Mario held an advantage for most of game 1 after his early attack, but he gave a ball away to Kiwi on illegal contact, and Kiwi took it from there. Kiwi ripped a five-ball run-out to grab the win for a 1-0 series lead. Kiwi had a lead in game 2 after her four-ball run, but she lost control at the end with illegal contact. Mario positioned himself to ignite a four-ball run-out for the win, tying the series at 1 in what has been a competitive battle. Kiwi began with force in game 3, but Mario was right on her tail for most of the game. Kiwi was a little faster to get onto the 8, and Mario had no angle for a top side shot. Kiwi kicked the 8 in the top right for the win and a 2-1 series win, putting her in the fourth round against Panda.

Precious v. Curtis Caldwell. A fit league captain goes against a heavy-hitting unaffiliated player with the silver cue. Precious scratched on the break of game 1, but she ended up winning as Curtis illegally potted the 8 as part of his unfortunate four-ball run on his first turn. Precious has a lucky 1-0 series lead. Precious again went empty on her break in game 2, and Curtis went big in attack, scoring a five-ball run. Precious answered on a four-ball run with a defensive block, but Curtis went through the defense on a pair of shots to win the game. Curtis' success tied the series at 1. Curtis had nothing from the break in game 3, and Precious soon burst forward with a four-ball run. Curtis had a couple of times where he saw a run layout, but he couldn't execute, and Precious easily walked away with the win for a 2-1 series win. Precious goes on to the fourth round.

Slinks v. Citrus. Longtime league veterans collide in this series with the red cue. Slinks had a decent amount of offense early on, but Citrus got by her before slowing things down. Citrus needed time for the last solid and the 8, but Slinks couldn't get positioning on her last two shots, so Citrus still comfortably won for a 1-0 series lead. Slinks bounced back incredibly well in game 2, refusing to bend to Citrus in the middle game. Citrus had a late push that came up short as Slinks buried a four-ball run-out for a firm win to tie the series at 1. It nearly came down to a hair miss for Slinks in game 3, but she was let off the hook in the close game as Citrus butchered her shot on the 8. Slinks made a pair of shots for the win and 2-1 series win, taking her to a fourth round series with the rookie Sarah.

Boots v. Martin Badillo. The blue cue is back in action as a league veteran takes on a strategist unaffiliated player. Boots started off quite well with a five-ball run in game 1 on her second turn, but she went cold after that, making just one shot. Martin took his time until he had a four-ball run, and he put the 8 in the bottom left when Boots missed it. Martin holds a 1-0 series lead. Martin had more of an impact at the start of game 2, challenging Boots the entire time. Boots ended up out of position for her last ball when Martin finally potted the 8 at the top right after multiple failures on previous turns. Martin secured the series at 2-0 with the win. Martin spent an unnecessary long amount of time defending in game 3, only to lose when a scratch allowed Boots to make a pair of shots. Boots gladly took the hard-fought win. Martin won the series 2-1, and he will face Jake in the fourth round.

Strut v. Oshri Aharonov. A league veteran known for clever play meets the unaffiliated group's top strategist with the silver cue. Oshri made only one ball in game 1, and scratched it away later on in a poor performance that saw Strut steamroll his way to a win for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 was much closer between the players, but Strut took himself out of position at the top side, and Oshri did his part from there, attacking well and earning the win to tie the series at 1. Oshri had game 3 in his hands after a four-ball run early on, but he missed contact on the 8 near the top right, and Strut attacked with five balls over two turns to steal the win and 2-1 series win. Strut will face Bear in the fourth round.

Solaris v. Whiskers. The red cue's last series today features two powerful league players. Solaris struck first in game 1, doing great work with solids on the opposite end of the table from the break. Whiskers pulled back toward the end, but her positioning was lacking, and Solaris took control with a three-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. Solaris didn't come anywhere near matching that in game 2, making a mess of his attack while Whiskers swiftly navigated the table. Whiskers closed on a pair of shots for the win, tying the series at 1. Solaris already had a lead with good positioning in game 3 when Whiskers butchered a shot that sent the 8 prematurely into the bottom right. Solaris took the gifted win for a 2-1 series win, and he will face Ruby in the fourth round.

Axel Cools v. Shaggy. The final series is with the blue cue, with an unaffiliated player taking on a pillar of the league. Axel made a stripe on the break in game 1, but ceded a lot of ground to a creative four-ball run by Shaggy. Axel would not rest, weaving a brilliantly-executed four-ball run-out at the end, which gave him a 1-0 series lead. Axel faced a bit more resistance in game 2, and he didn't do himself any favors by erring frequently late in the game. Shaggy held on and made a nice shot on the 8 to grab the win, tying the series at 1 to set up a decisive finale. Axel had more offense in game 3, but he lacked positioning at the very end, allowing Shaggy to make a deeper run for the win. Shaggy took the series 2-1, and she will face Precious in the fourth round.

That's all for the third round. Tomorrow, the entire fourth round is scheduled for play after the end of UPCL Elite Week 5.

Heart of the Game 13-ball Tournament - Round 3 Day 1

The first of the two-day third round is here, beginning with...

Twilight v. Cyril Hendrickx. A league star and an unaffiliated star meet to begin the day with the red cue. Twilight made a ball on the break in game 1, but went cold until a late three-ball run. Cyril had more early success and then answered Twilight's run with his well-prepared four-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. Cyril started well in game 2, but Twilight put up more resistance this time. Cyril had a chance at the win but he missed the 8, and his three-ball run ended in missed contact. Twilight made her last two shots for the win, tying the quick series at 1. Cyril gave a good battle in game 3, but Twilight knew what she was doing defensively. Twilight removed the defense on a three-ball run left Cyril with poor positioning, and his foul allowed Twilight to take the 8 at the top right from ball-in-hand. Twilight won the series 2-1, earning her spot in the fourth round.

Sarah v. Puff I. A league rookie takes on a respected veteran with the blue cue in today's second series. Sarah struck first in game 1, and then both players bunkered into a positioning battle. Puff I looked set to win on a six-ball run, but she couldn't kick the 8 to the top right. Sarah rallied back with a pair of three-ball runs for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Sarah made a ball on the game 2 break as well, and she attacked with a bit more gusto this time. Puff I had a chance for a run, but she gave herself a tough shooting position and sacrificed set-up work for instant gratification. Sarah slowly bounced back before making three balls over her last two turns for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Puff I was better this time, picking her shots well. Sarah had no positioning either, making it a fairly easy win for Puff I. Sarah took the series 2-1 to get to the fourth round.

Azul Mora v. Thabo Chahine. Under-the-radar unaffiliated players get the silver cue's first action today. Azul couldn't quite get his shots lined up just right in game 1, but he ended up not needing to, as Thabo illegally potted the 8 while trying to bank his last ball in. Azul was gifted the win for a 1-0 series lead. Azul again failed to do much on offense in game 2, but Thabo wouldn't bail him out this time. Thabo had solid shots early on and while he faded at the end, he did enough to pick up a strong win, tying the series at 1. Azul didn't have much success early on, succumbing to Thabo's brilliant tactical play. Thabo just couldn't pot his last ball, and Azul had enough left at the end to find his way to the win, taking the series at 2-1. Azul will head to the fourth round.

Waluigi v. Neopolitan. Two league players not known for success take their chances with the red cue. Neopolitan had her chances in game 1, clearly shooting better than Waluigi until she got onto her final ball. Waluigi had positioning after Neopolitan couldn't kick the 8 to the top left, and Waluigi made a pair of shots for the win and 1-0 series lead. Waluigi again made a ball on the break, and he was down to his last ball very quickly, but he never got in lined up. Neopolitan saw a three-ball run end with a strategic scratch, and this helped her win after Waluigi missed contact on the next shot. Neopolitan's pair of shots at the end tied the series at 1. Neopolitan had a ball on the break, but left the bottom right quite congested. This made it difficult for her to get positioning late in the game, and Waluigi played defense when Neopolitan did get close. Waluigi ended with three tap-ins for the win, taking a 2-1 series win to get into the fourth round.

Marsell v. Patches. The blue cue is back for a rising star in the league facing one of the bona fide superstars. Marsell and Patches had choppy offense in game 1, neither going on a big run. Marsell got onto the 8 first, but he couldn't put it away at the top right, and Patches stormed back with a three-ball run-out to take the win for a 1-0 series lead. Patches had a fantastic game 2 break, but came just short of winning as the 8 hung on the bottom right edge. Both players failed to break the defense, and Patches lost trying to jam the ball out, gifting Marsell a win to tie the series at 1. Patches had two errors in game 3, both of which ruined her chances of a win as Marsell gained attack after the first and won after the second to take the series win at 2-1. Marsell continues his march into the fourth round.

Mr. Snowman v. Irsyad Sudjana. The silver cue puts a league veteran against a crafty unaffiliated player. Mr. Snowman nearly blew his lead in game 1 after a missed contact, but he pulled back with a cut on the 1 to the bottom left and a tap-in on the 8 that Irsyad had failed to convert on the previous turn. Mr. Snowman holds a 1-0 series lead. Mr. Snowman began with a five-ball run in game 2, but he spent the rest of the game trying to get in position on his final ball. Irsyad took his time to rally back, but he eventually got by Mr. Snowman and took the 8 on a tap-in at the top side for the win, tying the series at 1. Mr. Snowman again attacked early in game 3, although a scratch slowed him down. Mr. Snowman missed multiple cuts on the 8, and then scratched, setting Irsyad's four-ball run-out up in the process. Irsyad took the win and a 2-1 series win, continuing his campaign into the fourth round against Waluigi.

Dewey v. Eustacio Zarraga. Another league player takes on a tactically-inclined unaffiliated player, this time with the red cue. Dewey made two stripes and a solid on the game 1 break, but stripes proved to be a tougher suit. Eustacio scratched twice and still worked his way through the rack faster than Dewey, earning the win at the end for a 1-0 series lead. Eustacio had an empty break in game 2, but Dewey made it work out well for him. Dewey attacked with a big run early on and quickly got positioning on all of his shots, winning four turns in to tie the series at 1. Dewey employed a highly unusual strategy in game 3, making three balls for Eustacio while quickly navigating his own suit. Eustacio seemed flustered instead of pleased, as most of his positioning options were taken away, and Dewey made quick work of Eustacio at the end for an odd but encouraging win. Dewey's 2-1 series win gives him a fourth round series against Marsell.

Lucio Adame v. Cobalt. The blue cue rotates in for a vicious unaffiliated player against a tough league player. Lucio began with a three-ball run in game 1, and he never looked back. Cobalt had his chances, but removing his defense at the top left proved critical, as Lucio used that pocket to deposit his last ball before making the 8 a couple of turns later. Lucio owns a 1-0 series lead. Lucio scratched on the break in game 2, an unfortunate occurrence that set him back for the whole game. Cobalt didn't have much of an advantage to work with, but he held on to the end to get the win, his clean shooting tying the series at 1. Lucio took advantage of Cobalt's empty break in game 3, attacking quickly early on with a five-ball run. Cobalt held his defense at the bottom right for a long time, but Lucio got behind it and picked up the win on his last pair of shots. Lucio took the series 2-1, advancing to the fourth round.

Crystal v. Caitlin. The silver cue sees a feisty captain take on a deceptive league veteran. Crystal started with a three-ball run in game 1, and then used smart shooting to get onto her last ball. Caitlin had to use defense, and it still didn't work, as Crystal set up and made two shots at the end for the win and 1-0 series lead. Crystal made two solids and a stripe on the game 2 break, but she scratched two shots later to mitigate her advantage. Caitlin got ahead of Crystal at the end, only to pot the 8 a ball too early, gifting the win and the series at 2-0 to Crystal due to the unlucky blunder. Crystal again displayed her powerful break in game 3, but her offense went cold after that. Caitlin instead rallied with a five-ball run-out from ball-in-hand to take the win, cutting the series down to 2-1 at the end. Crystal will take a fourth round appearance.

Gwandoya Makeba v. Panda. A powerful unaffiliated player takes on a longtime league captain with the red cue. Gwandoya made two solids and a stripe on the game 1 break, but it was him making two other stripes to the same pocket after choosing solids that changed the game. Panda took advantage of the generosity, closing with a surprise four-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. Gwandoya skipped the charity in game 2, attacking solely on his stripes. Panda tried to make moves with his solids, but Gwandoya blocked him multiple times at the mutually needed top side before converting the 13 as part of a final pair of shots. Gwandoya's win tied the series at 1. Gwandoya had nothing on the break, allowing Panda to choose from two good distributions. Panda chose stripes for a four-ball run immediately, and he set up at the top side to end the run. Gwandoya fired back with a five-ball run and collateral damage, but Panda made his top side shot and then the 8 at the bottom right for the win and 2-1 series win. Panda is in the fourth round.

Jennifer v. Gal. Urban rivals in the league square off with the blue cue in the middle of the fourth cycle. Both players did well in game 1, but Jennifer didn't have an answer for the late defense Gal imposed through positioning. Jennifer eventually missed contact, and Gal made the final pair of shots to go ahead 1-0 in the series with her win. Gal started slower in game 2, but caught up as Jennifer fought with the finicky side pockets, only to scratch while making the 8 in the bottom right. Gal's blunder gifted the win to Jennifer, keeping the series up for grabs in a 1-1 tie. Jennifer didn't support her fortunate win at all, making as many balls as she had scratches in game 3. Gal dominated with an early set of runs, and she soon cut the 8 from the kitchen to the top right for the win and 2-1 series win. Gal goes against Azul Mora in the fourth round.

Ruby v. Stealth. The silver cue is here as two league originals go at it in this series. Both players had some inconsistency in their shooting in game 1, but Stealth's was more pronounced. Stealth couldn't pot his last ball, and Ruby went around him with a three-ball run-out for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Stealth had a chance to win game 2, as Ruby was way out of position, but Stealth continually missed on the 8. Ruby eventually had her chance on a four-ball run-out she converted for an epic comeback to seal the series at 2-0. Stealth elected to take solids after Ruby's empty break, given a cluster at the bottom right. Ruby didn't seem bothered, taking only a few turns to gain the lead and then a couple more after that for the win when Stealth lost control of his offense. Ruby swept the series 3-0 to earn her spot in the fourth round.

Smokey v. Jason N. A league veterans takes on a sophomore with the red cue to begin the fifth cycle. Smokey started with a five-ball run cut short by a scratch in game 1. Jason pulled back a bit with some crafty shooting, but Smokey used a three-ball run-out at the end to get the win for a 1-0 series lead. Smokey ripped another four-ball run from the break in game 2, his early offense second to none in this round. Jason again made a push-back at the end, but Smokey shut the door with a couple of shots to clinch the series at 2-0. Smokey scratched on the break in game 3, and had to rally from behind after Jason got down to his last ball quickly. Smokey found his way at the end when Jason couldn't corral that last ball. Smokey made a pair on the final turn for the win and the 3-0 series sweep that puts him in the fourth round.

Sage v. Veto Casas. An unusual sophomore meets a surprising unaffiliated strategist in the blue cue's last series today. Sage and Veto combined for an interesting game 1 that saw them stay close while making each other's shot at the bottom side. This gave Veto a clearer path to his eventual win after Sage couldn't convert. Veto leads the series 1-0. Veto didn't have nearly as much offense after his empty break in game 2. Sage didn't start all that strong either, but she had enough left at the end to take the win over Veto, tying the series at 1. Sage began with a three-ball run in game 3, and then held off a furious comeback three-ball run by Veto at the end, tapping the 8 in to secure her win. Sage claimed the series at 2-1, advancing to the fourth round.

Lexi v. Snuggle. The silver cue closes its day as a league villain takes on a respected captain. Lexi had a good start in game 1, but her win came about more by Snuggle getting overwhelmed by how bad his positioning was on the table. Lexi needed a few tries to get the 8 at the top right, but she converted with plenty of time for the win and a 1-0 lead in the series. Snuggle again made a lot of bad shots, including at least two mindless illegally potted ball plays late in the game. Lexi already had the lead and took the generosity well, finishing off a blowout win to seal the series at 2-0. Lexi struggled a bit with her accuracy in game 3, and while Snuggle missed plenty of shots too, he was a little sharper at the end to get the win. Lexi still took the series 2-1, earning a fourth round series with a similar player in Lucio Adame.

Bear v. Bianca. The red cue ends this day with a series between league players going in different directions. Bear struck first on the break in game 1, and he was better than Bianca at positioning as the game went on as well. Bear took the win with a four-ball run-out, putting him up 1-0 in the series. Bear made a ball on the break again in game 2, but it took until the end of the game for him to look confident. Bianca had gotten down onto the 8, but she missed a bank attempt to the top right. Bear fired off a three-ball run-out to earn the win, securing the series at 2-0. Bear spent most of game 3 behind, and just as he caught up, he illegally potted the 8 to gift a win to Bianca. Bear will settle for a 2-1 series win to get him into the fourth round.

We'll finish the third round tomorrow.

Heart of the Game 13-ball Tournament - Round 2 Day 4

The final day of the second round is here, beginning with...

Barasa Contee v. Gradley. A tricky unaffiliated player takes on one of the league's best with the silver cue. Barasa struck first in game 1, and he persisted right to the end of the game, holding off some strong plays by Gradley thanks to good defense. Barasa picked up the win for a 1-0 series lead. Barasa outplayed Gradley on a number of turns in game 2, showing a little more skill in converting his shots. Gradley had to hope for a miss at the end, but Barasa made the final pair of shots for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Barasa had some shots lined up in game 3, but his miss on the 13 at the top right allowed Gradley to fire off a three-ball run-out for the win. Barasa took the series 2-1, and will play in the third round.

Azul Mora v. Haejun Ki. A slick shooter faces a precise player as unaffiliated players meet with the red cue. Azul pulled ahead in game 1 early on, and battled with Haejun during the middle before finding his second burst on a pair of shots at the end. Azul leads the series 1-0 with the clean finish. Both players tried to shake up game 2 a bit, with Azul accidentally potting one of Haejun's balls before Haejun illegally potted the 8 to gift the win and the 2-0 series lead to Azul on the next shot. Azul had to do a bit more work to earn the win in game 3, but after Haejun had a good start, Azul found a five-ball run. Two turns later, Azul capped the victory well at the top right to sweep the series 3-0. Azul will take on Thabo Chahine in the third round.

Kenzo Hashimoto v. Bear. An understated unaffiliated player takes on a struggling league player with the blue cue. Kenzo struck quickly in game 1, and then used unwavering defense at the top right to stall Bear in the late stages. Bear missed enough for Kenzo to take the 8 at the bottom right for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Bear had better positioning from the start in game 2, showing no troubles in burying his shots while Kenzo tried to align himself better. Bear remained a step ahead right to the end, gathering the win to tie the series at 1. Bear started slower in game 3, allowing Kenzo to pick out the corners over his first two turns. Bear ignited his offense with the side pockets first, a critically brilliant decision that helped him get onto the 8 and win before Kenzo could make his last ball. Bear took the series 2-1, and will face Bianca in the third round.

Strawberry v. Spot. A former Trident takes on a current one as the silver cue begins cycle two today. Spot burst ahead in game 1, leaving Strawberry to try to unravel her solids. Strawberry had everything in position, but couldn't ignite the run when Spot finally put the 8 in the top left for the win. Spot took a 1-0 series lead. Spot made a pair on the break, but Strawberry answered with a four-ball run on her first turn of game 2. The 8 played defense at the top right, but neither player budged, and Spot only lost after missing the 8 twice. Strawberry converted from ball-in-hand on her third try after Spot fouled, getting the win to tie the series at 1. Both players took turns controlling the pace of game 3, leading to an even battle. Some late misses kept the momentum swinging until Strawberry deposited the 8 in the top right for the win to earn a 2-1 series win. Strawberry is set to face Barasa Contee in the third round.

Kirstin v. Veto Casas. A league player takes on an average unaffiliated player with the red cue. Kirstin and Veto both did well to line things up, but they lacked in execution multiple times each in game 1. Eventually Kirstin committed an error, allowing Veto to take the ball-in-hand on the 8, slamming it to the bottom left for the 1-0 series lead. Both players demonstrated a bit more intent with their shots in game 2. Kirstin made a brutal attack at the top right to clear up her path to victory, which was a three-ball run-out on the next turn. Kirstin's win over Veto tied the series at 1. Kirstin had very little to enjoy in game 3, as Veto had as much success on her suit as she did. Veto was defended against at the end, but Kirstin illegally bumped the 8 in to gift the win and the series at 2-1 to Veto on the final shot. Veto will play against Sage in the third round.

Strut v. Shiny. Two well-respected league veterans take their turn with the blue cue. Shiny did what she could defensively in a tough game 1, but she chipped her one chance at the 8. Strut potted it at the top left after a long struggle, putting him up 1-0 in the series. Shiny had every chance in the world to make her final ball in game 2, and every one of those chances went to waste. Strut was not immune from rising frustrations, but he channeled his annoyance into a comeback push, making a pair of three-ball runs to get the win that secured the series for him at 2-0. Shiny had the lead from the very start of game 3, and she never looked back. Strut had a chance to challenge Shiny, but he missed a shot and ruined his positioning, and Shiny finished after another error by Strut for the win. Strut still took the series 2-1, and will host Oshri Aharonov in the third round.

Roxy v. Kiwi. Two longtime league players clash with the silver cue as we begin the third cycle. Roxy scratched on the break in game 1 and then missed contact twice near the end, allowing Kiwi to gather momentum at critical times. Kiwi won on a three-ball run-out to go ahead 1-0 in the series. Kiwi started with a three-ball run on the game 2 break, but still ended up playing a lot of defense after Roxy replied on a five-ball run. Roxy had her chances to finish the game, missing the 8 multiple times. Kiwi then made her final ball and the 8 on the same turn to get the win, sealing the series at 2-0. Kiwi started with a three-ball run again in game 3, but this one wouldn't hold up either. Roxy made her push and added an extra element at the end this time to pick up the win, avoiding a sweep. Kiwi settles for a 2-1 series win to get her into the third round match against Mario.

Dani v. Zdenko Jansky. A crafty league veteran meets a similar player from the unaffiliated pool with the red cue. Dani started game 1 well, but couldn't finish the effort after a late scratch. Zdenko had to work around Dani's obstruction tactics, but he eventually put the 8 away in the top side for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Zdenko had an illegal double-pot on his game 2 break, allowing Dani to obtain a significant lead early on. Zdenko scratched his way out of success in the early going, but rallied back and passed Dani at the end with a three-ball run-out, good for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Dani had plenty of chances yet again in game 3, wasting every one of them with frustrations peaking by the end. Zdenko showed precision with harder shots, winning on a three-ball run-out to sweep the series 3-0. Zdenko will play against Spice in the third round.

Crystal v. Shawn. A pair of league captains go at it with the blue cue, trying to snap the day's bad luck. Crystal played with fire for most of game 1, getting burned on a cut that potted the 6 at the bottom side but also the 8 at the top left on her third turn. Shawn received the gifted win to go up 1-0 in the series. Shawn had some good shots in game 2, getting onto the 8 first, but Crystal did just enough defensively to keep herself in it. Crystal's block and Shawn's missed contact on the final turns led Crystal to converting a three-ball run-out for the win, retying the series at 1 game apiece. Crystal used the 8 defensively in game 3, although she came close to potting it prematurely herself. Shawn rallied with a five-ball run abbreviated by a scratch, and then tried a kick near the guarded top right, which ended with him repaying Crystal for her earlier generosity by gifting the win and 2-1 series win to Crystal as the 8 fell. Crystal will go against Caitlin in the third round.

Cubby v. Puff I. More league players get action today, this series with the silver cue. Cubby made one of each on the game 1 break, and then attacked with great force later on, picking up a crafty three-ball run-out despite Puff I's late push. Cubby has a 1-0 series lead. Cubby brought another thorough attack in game 2, and he had the chance to win when he put the 8 in the bottom right, but a little too much gusto on the shot bailed Puff I out after her failings at the top side. The quick game was credited to Puff I, tying the series at 1. Cubby had to rally near the end of game 3 to have any hope of beating Puff I, who used a great start and a patient finish to her favor. Puff I made the 8 to the bottom right when Cubby fouled on his final turn. Puff I took the series 2-1, and she will meet Sarah in the third round.

Sugar v. Cobalt. The league players continue to get the spotlight, with the red cue coming back into action. Sugar started out well in game 1, but she couldn't get set up on her final two shots fast enough. Cobalt countered with a three-ball run-out at the end, capping his slower-starting deep pair of runs with a win. Cobalt has a 1-0 series lead. Sugar came out swinging again in game 2, frustrated by the previous loss. She got onto the 8 with relative ease, and drew an illegal contact by Cobalt to give her an easy finish on the 8. Sugar's smart play tied the series at 1 with her win. Sugar kept the energy up in her game 3 performance, but an attempt on the 15 at the bottom right went all wrong when she bumped the 8 in prematurely. Cobalt will take a gifted win, as he got outplayed on the whole but won the series 2-1 anyway. Cobalt will need to stand on his own in a third round series with the ever-dangerous Lucio Adame.

Boots v. Isabella. A fourth-straight league-only series will be played with the blue cue. Boots went empty on the break, allowing Isabella to impose her will early in game 1. Boots roared back with five balls over two turns to get onto the 8, and while she took her time, she had plenty of it to take in earning the win for a 1-0 series lead. Isabella looked a little lost in game 2, but the occasionally-ditzy youngster rallied with a three-ball run and good positioning to even the game. Unfortunately, she had no plan for her last ball, and Boots made her last pair of shots for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Isabella kept game 3 much closer, but she couldn't quite make her final ball at the bottom right. Boots went right through Isabella's defense, drilling the 8 in on a collateral damage double-pot for the win and 3-0 series sweep. Boots faces the surprisingly tough Martin Badillo in the third round.

Waluigi v. Blizzard. A pair of league players with similar career trajectories meet as the silver cue begins the fifth cycle. Waluigi had an acceptable start in game 1, but a scratch and a missed contact ruined his attack. The latter foul gave Blizzard all she needed to finish her win on a four-ball run-out for the 1-0 series lead. Blizzard made one of each suit on the game 2 break, but she couldn't quite align her final ball at the bottom side after a quick attack. Waluigi trailed behind and confidently made some shots to pull even before pushing forward for the win at the end. Waluigi's victory tied the series at 1. Blizzard and Waluigi dueled with great patience in game 3, as both needed to unravel the rack first. Blizzard had the first chance at the 8, but missed toward the bottom right, and Waluigi took the win on a pair of shots on his next turn. Waluigi's 2-1 series win sets him up to face Neopolitan.

Eustacio Zarraga v. Florent Claes. Two lesser-known unaffiliated players have the red cue's last series of the day. Eustacio had the better of offense after Florent scratched to surrender his early advantage. By the end, Eustacio was able to force his way to a win, putting the 8 into the top right after clearing out the defense. Eustacio holds a 1-0 series lead. Florent was sharp in the middle of game 2, but his start and finish lacked decisiveness. Eustacio attacked the vulnerability at the end with a five-ball run-out, the late push earning him a win to secure the series at 2-0. Eustacio went streaky in game 3, as Florent had the better of play this time, but Eustacio closed the door on a win with a three-ball run-out after Florent got generous. Eustacio's 3-0 sweep earns him a third round series with Dewey.

Ice Cream v. Jason N. We're back to league players as the blue cue ends its day. Ice Cream had a decent start with a ball on the break, and she saw Jason scratch twice early on in game 1, but she still couldn't convert the 8. Jason played great defense, blocking his way to the win in comeback fashion for the 1-0 series lead. Jason came out swinging in game 2, working his way around the table with a subtle speed. Ice Cream had to execute a big run to have a chance in the end, and she failed to do so, allowing Jason to bank the 8 to the bottom side for the win. Jason clinched the series at 2-0 on the play. Jason nearly came out of nowhere again in game 3 after a rough start, but Ice Cream saved up enough to push her way to the win at the end. Jason's 2-1 series win gets him a series against Smokey in the third round.

Marsell v. Dusky. Two underappreciated league players close out the second round with the silver cue. Both players had an aversion to stripes early on, but Dusky ended up with them and made it work. Dusky navigated poor positioning at first to get ahead and take the win at the end for a 1-0 series lead. Dusky had a much better start in game 2, but she left her finishing skills behind. Marsell used great defense at the top left to stall Dusky on the 8, and then he made a pair of shots at the end for the win, tying the series at 1. Marsell did well at the start of game 3, dominating from the break to pick up the win and a 2-1 series win as Dusky scuffled along. Marsell is the last player to make the third round, and he will face Patches in his next series.

The third round begins tomorrow, played over the course of two days.

Select Cricket 2019 - Week 5

After a slight schedule adjustment, Select will start off Week 5 right here and now. First up...

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Gems have Leonardo on the bench in the weekly opener, while the visiting Spiders begin a road doubleheader with Avril on the bench. Waluigi started off alright with 492 for Web City, growing in confidence as the turn continued. Shadow did not do well against his former team, a ball skipping over his bat to cut him off at 144 for Diamond. Ted answered with 616 for the Spiders, helping them to make an impact on the road. Smokey had a more appropriate response with 534 for the Gems, trying to mitigate the damage done against them. Jack continues to be one of the best road players in the division, pounding 755 for Web City this time. Pedey got caught on his backhand, ending with a mild 250 as Diamond has little hope of a comeback now. Chicky Phil tapped 337 for the Spiders at the end, giving them a total of 2200 even. Katelynn fell with a meager 65 for the Gems, their lackluster attack falling in a loss at 993. Web City's surprise win gets them up to 4-5, passing the now 3-6 Diamond squad.

Sprint Pitch, Victoria: In the Spiders' second game of a doubleheader, they will give Waluigi some rest, while the Spurs sit Mitchell after his recent poor performance. Ted did well until a ball dipped under his bat. He couldn't save it in time, ending with 443 to start Web City's offense this time. Spice's home scoring woes persisted with a simple 295 for Victoria, leading them off at a deficit. Jack stood tall again with 820 for the Spiders this time, greatly extending their lead. Yekaterina fired back with a fierce 895 for the Spurs, making up some ground at the midway mark. Avril mistimed a couple of swings, one early and one late, as she fell with 298 for Web City, sacrificing some of their lead. Sage kept the pressure on the rise for Victoria, attacking with 717 to challenge the visitors on the final turn. Chicky Phil looked spent in hitting a poor 96 for the Spiders, sticking them with a loss at 1657. Strawberry went off with 564 at the end, securing the Spurs win at 2471. Victoria is 10-2, the first 10-win team in Select, while Web City falls back to 4-6.

Mercedes-Benz Field, Harrison: Northeastern rivals clash in this game, with Blizzard cycling out for regular rest for the Specters while the Lumberjacks sit Summer due to early-season struggles. Whiskers slugged 1162 for Maplewood on the opening turn, a massive performance from the star. Sydney S. didn't come anywhere near the same pace, ending with a decent 373 for Harrison. Diddley dropped off a bit with 243 for the Lumberjacks, a sign their captain may need rest this week. Twinkie II made a significant deficit with 676 for the Specters, trying to spark a late-game rally. Bryant provided 587 for Maplewood in response, restrengthening their lead with the good turn. Lexi didn't have as much with 405 for Harrison, causing them to drop a little farther behind. Gabe pushed 272 for the Lumberjacks in a middling finish, giving them a final score of 2264. Rudolph made a fantastic push with 696 for the Specters, but he fell a bit short as the team closed with 2150 in the loss. Maplewood stays atop the division at 6-1, while Harrison drops to 8-5.

IBM Nighthawks Nest, North Modernistic: The Nighthawks give Gal the game off here, while the Arrows return from a bye with Hoppy out of action. Sally had an energetic start, her good start wasted by a high hit that cut her off at 264 for Archtown. Peach ripped 874 for North Modernistic, using a great pace of her own to drive the attack forward. Sleepy B. lacked timing for many of her swings, a low pace and a bad deflection stalling her at 199 for the Arrows. Cheddar made a desperate reaching save for the Nighthawks, but then lifted the next ball to exit with 385. Dusky was unable to break the mediocrity for Archtown, falling at only 247 on her turn. Lionel played a solid turn with 411 for North Modernistic, an improvement compared to some of his efforts this year. A. Charlton used her team's bad game as a campaign for more playing time as she scored 425 to give them 1135 in total. Luigi had an unimpressive 200 to cap the Nighthawks win at 1870. North Modernistic jumps to 6-4, while Archtown slips to 4-4.

Microsoft Pitch, Del Sur: The Monarchs have Dominic on the bench in their return home after a four-game road trip, while the Union sit Puff I in the fourth of a five-game road trip. Ms. Puppy delivered a slump-busting attack with 754 for Modernistic to lead off this road game. Mams didn't let him get away too easily, firing back with 550 to keep Southern engaged early in the game. Daisy kept the pressure against the hosts high, clobbering a pacey 650 on the second attack. Panda couldn't keep up with that for the Monarchs, his 373 causing them to slip farther behind at the midway mark. Kodiak covered that damage with 445 for Modernistic, missing a swing to cut his turn short early. Pounce lifted a swing far too much on his turn, ending with just 164 as Southern's hopes of a comeback fade. Sydney C. showed a little fatigue with only 295 for the Union, giving them a final score of 2144 in a likely win. Salmo finished with an alright 304 for the Monarchs, their losing total sitting at 1391. Modernistic is even again at 3-3, while five straight home losses have Southern at 1-9 overall.

Mercedes-Benz Field, Harrison: Both captains sit this game out, as the Specters reluctantly rest Twinkie II while the Spurs more readily give Spice this game off. Yekaterina continued to attack without mercy, leading Victoria's offense off with 813 this time. Sydney S. stood her ground for awhile, but a failed backhand flick stopped her with 567 for Harrison. Sage missed a swing at 227 for the Spurs, the weak effort destabilizing the visitors' lead. Blizzard lashed a quick 526 for the Specters, covering the deficit halfway through the game. Strawberry refused to let the hosts off easy, finding a firm pace to tally 560 for Victoria, restoring their lead for a bit. Lexi chaotically sprayed 607 for Harrison on her turn, adding a small extra amount to their lead heading into the final turn. Mitchell hit 271 for the Spurs against his former team, giving them 1871 in total. Rudolph had a rare bad game with 227, but it was enough for the Specters to finish the upset in a win at 1927. Harrison is 9-5 with the busiest schedule in the division, while Victoria falls back to 10-3.

Volkswagen Stadium, Viewpoint Sound: Nibbles will take regular rest in the second of a five-game home stand for the Meteors, while Sally takes her turn on the bench for the Arrows. Sleepy B. might be dipping into a slump, recording just 248 on the opening turn for Archtown. Princess finally made her home debut for Viewpoint Sound, but she barely edged them ahead with 260 in another mediocre appearance. Hoppy, looking refreshed, hit a decent 441 to give the Arrows a stronger second lead. Hoot appeared to have found his groove before a high hit cut him off at 405 for the Meteors. Dusky double-tapped a swing for Archtown, lifting it out of play at just 128 as the visitors see their offense seemingly cursed again. Frosty pummeled 796 for Viewpoint Sound in response, finally giving the hosts a lead with separation late in the game. A. Charlton fell apart with only 100 for the Arrows, who took a brutal loss at 917 as their offense has hit the skids. Dani exited with 341 for the quick finish, icing the Meteors win at 1802. Viewpoint Sound remains good at home and is now 4-3 overall, while Archtown dives to 4-5.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Wolves begin a home doubleheader with Cobalt taking the bench, while the Union give rookie Sydney C. her first game off for rest. Ms. Puppy began with 373 for Modernistic, an acceptable first turn from the captain. Juno returned to the lineup with a hefty 759 for Stonebridge, giving them a nice lead initially. Daisy pushed back with 623 for the Union, covering the deficit well with that effort. Hershey missed a swing, causing him to fall early at 272 as the Wolves see their lead vanish quickly. Puff I just barely covered the deficit with an ugly 176, her high swing causing the early exit for Modernistic. Wild Thing lost a bit of his recent form, but his 400 gave Stonebridge a little more cushion heading into the final turn. Kodiak fired off 451 for the Union, giving them a total of 1623 that the hosts need to answer. Vladimir served 310 for the Wolves, enough to give them a small win at 1741. Stonebridge jumps to 5-4, while Modernistic falters down to 3-4.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: In the second game of their doubleheader, the Wolves have Hershey on the bench, while the Spiders' busy week continues with them sitting Chicky Phil. Waluigi erupted with 550 to start for Web City, leading off the game well for the visitors. Juno had no pace for Stonebridge, and she fell on a poor backhand attempt at 224. Ted fired off 600 for the Spiders on the second attack, giving their lead a nice boost. Cobalt answered with 655 for the Wolves, making a small gain against the deficit at the midway point. Jack replied with 464 for Web City, doing his part to protect their lead. Wild Thing is showing fatigue, the big man only providing 250 for Stonebridge as a comeback looks less likely. Avril smacked 529 with good pace, giving the Spiders a likely victorious total of 2143. Vladimir did no better than his teammates, his 211 sealing the Wolves loss at 1340. Web City took the surprise win to get to 5-6, just a half-game behind the 5-5 Stonebridge team.

Google Pitch at Union Ground, Modernistic: Both teams will sit their captains in this M-Line Derby, with Diddley out for the Lumberjacks and Ms. Puppy on the bench for the Union. Whiskers wasted no time in giving Maplewood the lead, bursting out for 802 on the opening turn of the game. Daisy replied with a reasonable 497 for Modernistic, mitigating the early damage done against the hosts. Summer had the potential to go big for the Lumberjacks, but she fell with only 264 on her turn. Puff I tried a backhand flick but was judged out at 339 for the Union despite appearing to clip the back 4s, sending the home fans into an uproar of boos. Bryant stayed in good form for Maplewood, padding their lead with a hearty 650. Kodiak couldn't keep up with 466 for Modernistic, causing them to lose ground heading into the final players' turns. Gabe melted with 248 for the Lumberjacks, clearly in need of the next off-day as he leaves them a little vulnerable at 1964. Sydney C. struggled in her return to the lineup, her 72 leaving the Union at 1364. Maplewood continues to soar this season at 7-1, while Modernistic is 3-5 with plenty of questions to ask of themselves.

IBM Nighthawks Nest, North Modernistic: The Nighthawks boldly choose to rest Cheddar for only the second time this season, while the Gems sit Katelynn after her bad outing last time. Shadow slashed 476 for Diamond, showing off against the other team that wanted to trade for him in the offseason. Peach fired back with 725 for North Modernistic, putting them ahead to start the game. Smokey had only 224 for the Gems, not even enough to cover the deficit on the second attack. Gal struck 395 for the Nighthawks, adding modestly to their lead at the halfway mark. Pedey had pace for awhile, but bad swings dragged him down before he exited with 373 for Diamond. Lionel managed 276 for North Modernistic in a game that has seen both teams come in under expectations. Leonardo hit 316 for the Gems, leaving them short at 1389 in the loss. Luigi did well at the end with 546 for the Nighthawks, his no-pressure turn sealing their win at 1942. North Modernistic has found their way to 7-4, while Diamond is 3-7 now.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Wolves' four-game home stand concludes with an Eastern Hills Derby against the Sharks to close Week 5. Wild Thing sits for the hosts, while Chelsea gets her first off-day for the visitors. Graham lifted 702 for Eastside, finally finding a high-pace effort for the visitors. Juno answered with 788 for Stonebridge, creating a high-scoring exchange between the captains. Taylor M. collected 636 on a good second attack for the Sharks, challenging the hosts. Cobalt had a great pace but a short turn with only 250 for the Wolves, putting them behind. Gizmo wasted the chance to bury the opposition by hitting a mere 193 for Eastside. Hershey made a small gain with 301 in a middling return to the Stonebridge lineup. Cubby picked up just 205 for the Sharks, another poor road appearance sticking them with a total of 1736. Vladimir failed to catch up, his 250 squandering the game as the Wolves lost with 1589. Eastside is 2-6 on the year after the fortunate with, while Stonebridge sinks to 5-6.

That's all for this week's action in Select. We've got preseason pool up next today, and the third round of that competition will be the only activity tomorrow.
