Heart of the Game 13-ball Tournament - Round 1 Day 3

We're onto the next day of games, beginning with...

Nibbles v. Summer. The silver cue will take the first series between Outcast club-mates. Summer started well in game 1, but lost her touch as the game progressed. Nibbles got close near the end, missing his chance at the 8 which allowed Summer to make a pair of shots for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Nibbles did a lot better with a quick four-ball run in game 2. Summer offered some resistance at the end of the game, but she couldn't make a ball at the bottom side, and Nibbles put the 8 in the top left for the win to tie the series at 1. Summer bounced back early in game 3 before a scratch derailed her entire attacking plan. Nibbles had a patient path forward, sometimes to an agonizingly slow pace, but he got the win, taking the series 2-1 as well.

Sikke Eichel v. Jake. A fast-shooting unaffiliated player meets a veteran with the red cue. Sikke had very little going his way in game 1, with many of his shots out of position and off target. Jake was much better, an early run combining with smart shooting late as he took the win for a 1-0 series lead. Jake didn't do as well in game 2, only dominating the middle portion of the game up to his scratch. Sikke started well and then made his second push late to grab the win, tying the series at 1 with a pair of shots on his final turn. In game 3, both players had an even performance, neither really breaking away from the other. Jake managed to pull ahead at the end with a pair of shots he lined up faster than Sikke could for himself. Jake took the series 2-1.

Bojing Luo v. Violetta. Another unaffiliated player takes on a young superstar with the blue cue. Bojing managed to get the upper hand on Violetta in game 1, causing Violetta to use a defensive posture in vain. Bojing eventually won with the 8 at the bottom left for a 1-0 series lead. Bojing had a good break in game 2, but couldn't track down his last ball with any effectiveness. Violetta used a soft touch on her last two shots to pick up the win, pulling even at 1 game apiece in the series. Bojing was faster in game 3, his quick shooting getting him onto the 8 with ease. Violetta had a loosely structured run planned out, but Bojing made the 8 to the top right before Violetta could attack. Bojing took out a favored player with a 2-1 series win to get to the second round.

Cyril Hendrickx v. Adrien Laurent. A pair of countrymen battle with the silver cue. Adrien struck first in game 1, but that was it for his success, as Cyril made a three-ball run and had better positioning. Cyril took his time on the 8, allowing Adrien to get close, but Cyril closed the door in time for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Adrien had an even larger lead after Cyril illegally potted a ball in game 2, but Cyril stayed true and took over with ball-in-hand after Adrien missed contact. Cyril converted a three-ball run-out for the win, clinching the series at 2-0. Cyril stormed out of the gate in game 3 with a four-ball run, but his last two shots were hard to make. Adrien made a tricky defensive play that Cyril couldn't counter at the end, and Adrien picked up the quick win to cut the series to 2-1.

Gizmo v. Delila. Two league veterans are next to meet, using the red cue for their series. Gizmo made a solid on the break, although he briefly fell behind before Delila scratched in the middle of game 1. Delila never recovered from that, while Gizmo used good shooting and positioning to take the win for a 1-0 series lead. Delila capitalized on Gizmo's long process of positioning in game 2, using her advantage and a scratch by Gizmo to make a three-ball run-out at the end. Delila's late push for the win helped her tie the series at 1. Gizmo struck at the side pockets early in game 3, putting himself in a positive position. Delila rallied quickly to take the lead, and then struck fast at the end with Gizmo chasing shots at the right corners. Delila's comeback sees her win the series at 2-1 after taking the finale.

Frisco Romero v. Spirit. A very skilled unaffiliated player takes on a historical star with the blue cue. Frisco had a three-ball run from the break without hardly blinking, but still had to come back after Spirit ripped a four-ball run on her first turn. Frisco succeeded on a late pair of shots, confidently taking the win for a 1-0 series lead. Frisco knocked out another league start in game 2, dominating with a big run early and just enough skill late to avoid Spirit's furious comeback effort. Frisco secured the series at 2-0 with this win. Frisco and Spirit battled in much closer fashion in game 3, with both having late three-ball runs. Spirit's came first and got her onto her final ball, but Frisco won the game with his push, sweeping the series 3-0.

Stephanie v. Twinkie II. The silver cue starts today's third cycle between feisty league veterans. Stephanie hit the side pockets faster than Twinkie II did in game 1, a critical maneuver that set Stephanie up for later success. Stephanie took ball-in-hand on her final turn and made a three-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. Twinkie II did better in game 2, but nearly lost it when she was called for an illegally potted ball. Stephanie failed to make her final shot before Twinkie II established defense at the mutually needed bottom left. Twinkie II would later make a pair of shots for the win to tie the series at 1. Twinkie II used a two-part break in game 3 which greatly benefited her. Stephanie wasted a turn busting the rest of the rack apart, and Twinkie II managed to pull away in that time, eventually winning for a 2-1 series win.

Celestia v. Charli XCX. The red cue brings us to halfway today with these two sparky league players. Celestia had a positive start in game 1, and managed to be a bit faster in a close battle with Charli at the end. Celestia's late push saw her make a pair of shots for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Charli didn't get a good distribution from Celestia's game 2 break, leaving Charli to defend the top side for most of the game. Celestia used force to break through the defense before taking the win, securing the series at 2-0. Celestia had another good break in game 3, which paced her attack throughout the game. Charli had a good middle section, but she let Celestia get back in it when Charli scratched. Celestia made her last two shots for the win, finishing a 3-0 series sweep.

Dobromil Zeman v. Hannah. The blue cue's next series pits a lanky unaffiliated player against a surprising league player. Dobromil made one of each while scratching on the game 1 break, but he chose solids and used a five-ball run later on to pressure Hannah, who couldn't back up her hot start. Dobromil easily took the win for a 1-0 series lead. Dobromil remained efficient on the break, and while he had a scratch in the middle of game 2, he kept Hannah pinned back enough to pick up the win without much of a fight. Dobromil clinched the series at 2-0. Dobromil had a tough time breaking through bad positioning in game 3, but Hannah did no better for herself. Dobromil eventually took this win as well, sweeping Hannah 3-0 to make it to the second round.

Manolito Avalos v. Tabor Laureano. A hard-hitter meets a tactician in this silver cue series. Manolito made good use of a ball on the break in game 1, which helped to put him ahead initially. His strategy didn't go smoothly, but he converted far more than Tabor, who could only watch as Manolito stormed his way to a win and 1-0 series lead. Tabor had a chance to be competitive in game 2, but a pair of scratches around a three-ball run by Manolito wasted that opportunity. Manolito took his time on the last pair of shots to get his win, clinching the series at 2-0. Tabor finally had enough offense to support his strategy in game 3, stymieing Manolito at the end of the game with crisp defense to give himself the win. Manolito still took the series 2-1.

Veto Casas v. Hoot. Another hard-hitter is up as a host, facing a veteran from the league. Hoot jumped out to a quick start in game 1, and just managed to hold on after Veto found a three-ball run late in the game. Hoot poked the 8 in the bottom left for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Hoot had a number of happy accidents in game 2, but all of those successful shots still left him short as Veto found a pair of shots at the end to earn the win. Veto's clutch finish under pressure from Hoot tied the series at 1. Hoot had a brutal scratch early in game 3, and it sparked a five-ball run from Veto. Things tightened up a bit later on, but Veto easily grabbed this win, completing his comeback to earn the 2-1 series win.

Vincent v. Debby. A league sophomore faces a more tenured opponent with the blue cue before an impending break. Vincent had plenty of chances to win game 1 before Debby got close, but he made it an extremely close game before putting the 8 in the bottom left for the win. Vincent is up 1-0 in the series, albeit far from confidently. Debby looked much stronger in game 2, while Vincent couldn't catch a break on the first few turns. Debby somehow blew this lead, as Vincent stormed back in the latter half of the game and poached the win when Debby missed on the 8. Vincent secured the series at 2-0. Debby managed to find a new way to butcher game 3, missing on her final ball and the 8 once each while Vincent set up his final, game-winning three-ball run-out. Vincent swept the series 3-0 to get to the second round.

Valencia v. Firdoze Uns. A tenured league captain takes on a minor unaffiliated challenger with the silver cue. Firdoze displayed unexpected skill in taking a four-ball run on his first turn. Valencia answered with a later four-ball run, but Firdoze was prepared and made a three-ball run-out in response to go up 1-0 in the series. Firdoze tried a spinning bank break in game 2, which led to a slow start. Both players broke out quickly in the middle, and ended up each needing the top left at the end. Valencia had the better position and made her shot on the second try before converting the 8 for the win to tie the series at 1. Valencia allowed Firdoze to thin the herd a bit early in game 3 before attacking with greater force. Firdoze did well to line his shots up, but Valencia's defense propelled her to the win in the end. Valencia advances with a 2-1 series win.

Lucio Adame v. Pauline. An elite finisher takes on a sophomore in the red cue's last appearance of the day. Lucio struck for stripes on the break, and he made it hold up at the end despite Pauline's strong attack. Lucio double-potted the 9 and 10 to the bottom side and right pockets, respectively, as part of a four-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. Lucio had another good break to start game 2, but Pauline found her way in attack much quicker this time. Lucio couldn't set himself up in time to prevent Pauline from taking this win, which tied the series at 1. Pauline made a ball on the game 3 break, but Lucio worked to make this game a race. Pauline had a chance to pressure Lucio late, but missed at the bottom left, sparking Lucio's three-ball run-out for the win. Lucio took the series 2-1, setting him up to face his fellow countryman Frisco Romero in the second round.

Snowball v. Ted. League opponents meet with the blue cue in its last series of the day. Snowball showed up on the break, but Ted had the better of play early in game 1. Ted lacked finish at the end as Snowball wove her way to a four-ball run-out for the win, earning the 1-0 series lead. Snowball had a flawed strategy in game 2, holding a lead but still electing to forcefully remove Ted's defense after he lined up his other shot. Ted gladly took advantage of this, making a pair of shots on his last turn for the win to tie the series at 1. Ted had a thundering break in game 3, but made an early error. Snowball butchered fantastic positioning from ball-in-hand, but still outpaced Ted to the finish, picking up the win for a 2-1 series win. Snowball will visit Nibbles in the second round.

Lionel v. Carlos Barajas. Today's final series is with the silver cue as a strongman meets an average unaffiliated player. Lionel scratched on the break in game 1, but he held on for a productive battle against Carlos, who hit well early on before fading. Lionel won with a silky cut on the 2 to the top left before sending the 8 to the bottom side for the win and 1-0 series lead. Carlos showed a different level of skill in game 2, using his second turn to negate Lionel's win with a six-ball run-out executed through beautiful maneuvering. Lionel had no chance as Carlos' win tied the series at 1. Carlos came close to a win numerous times in game 3, but Lionel did just enough on defense to slow Carlos down. Lionel then made a pair of shots on his last turn for the win and a 2-1 series win.

Tomorrow, we will hit the halfway point of the first round.
