Tournament X - First Round Day 28

We're back for some more Tournament action, with the red cue taking another day off. Leading off today...

Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Hoppy v. Smokey. The silver cue opens the action with 13-ball. Archtown's Hoppy made one of each on the break in game 1. Whitewater's Smokey quickly made a pair, but it was his four-ball run-out on the next turn that impressed. Smokey leads the series 1-0. The Shores' Smokey had an overfill at the top left on the game 2 break, but he left the Arrows' Hoppy virtually nothing in positioning. Smokey would eventually win on a three-ball run-out, clinching the series at 2-0. Smokey had a rough break in game 3, but he nearly unraveled bad positioning. Hoppy was just fast enough this time to take the win, allowing Smokey to take a 2-1 series win with him to the second round.

Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Bandit v. Strut. The purple cue gets the second series, playing Accuracy. Swordpoint's Bandit allowed game 1 to get away from him after a good start. His stretch of misses in the middle helped Golden's Strut establish and protect a lead, which ended with Strut winning 1-4 for the 1-0 series lead. The Pilots' Strut had a ball on the break and added a double-pot in game 2, but he lost his grip after that. The Blades' Bandit briefly faltered before locking in and taking the 1-3 win to tie the series at 1. Bandit had a late ball on the break, and Strut wasn't able to keep up with the pace established. Bandit won this one 1-4, taking the series 2-1 and earning the right to host the TodavĂa Stills' Bells in the second round.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Sweetheart v. Vincent. In 9-ball, the green cue makes its daily debut. Boston's Sweetheart carried most of the offense in game 1, but Everton's Vincent made the final pair after recovering from a couple of early scratches. Vincent owns a 1-0 series lead. The Eagles' Vincent appeared to gain momentum from his win, taking a larger share of offense in game 2. The Swifts' Sweetheart tried to keep up, but it was Vincent's 7-9 combination to the bottom left that earned the win. Vincent secured the series at 2-0 on the play. A back-and-forth game 3 saw Sweetheart get a chance at the 9, only to leave it short of the top left. Vincent tapped it in and swept the series 3-0. He'll visit the Pearl Surfers' Wings in the second round.

Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Snowball v. Hoppy. The visitor's second series today is in 8-ball with the blue cue. Swordpoint's Snowball had a burst with a six-ball run, but she twice missed the 8. A steadier effort from Archtown's Hoppy earned her the game 1 win for a 1-0 series lead. The Arrows' Hoppy did well to maintain a lead over the Blades' Snowball for much of game 2. Snowball couldn't mount a counterattack at the end, and Hoppy got the win to seal the series at 2-0. Hoppy held the lead again for most of game 3, but Snowball finally landed a hit with a seven-ball run-out for an epic comeback win. Hoppy still won the series 2-1, and she'll play host to her Arrows teammate Greg in the second round.

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Roxy v. Briana. The silver cue cycles in for a 13-ball set. A scratch and some tough positioning slowed Freedom's Roxy in game 1, but Queens' Briana failed to take advantage of it. Roxy did her part and got the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Flames' Briana took a defensive approach late in game 2, and she did enough to scare off the Cascades' Roxy. Briana nearly won, but missed the 8 to the top side, and Roxy tapped it in to clinch the series at 2-0. Briana again was the first to get onto the 8 in game 3 with a four-ball run, but her bank to the bottom left failed. Roxy answered on a three-ball run-out for the win, completing a 3-0 series sweep. Roxy will visit Midland Predators sophomore Kitty in the second round.

Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Valencia v. Crystal. Southeastern captains battle in 12-ball with the green cue. Golden's Valencia had a three-ball run early in game 1. Queens' Crystal battled back well, but Valencia won on a three-ball run-out to pull ahead 1-0 in the series. The Pilots' Valencia struggled more with scratches in game 2, setting her back multiple times. The Flames' Crystal had a similar pattern to her play, but cleaner shots helped her pull ahead and grab the win to tie the series at 1. Crystal had a booming break to start game 3, leaving plenty of open shooting lanes. Defense became a factor late, but Crystal buckled and Valencia made a pair of shots for the win to take the series 2-1. Valencia is headed to the second round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Omari v. Oreo. The purple cue takes a turn in 8-ball. Web City's Omari tried to get by on small runs during game 1, and that didn't work. Terrace City's Oreo used just a little pressure to get the lead, and then a good finish on the 8 to the top left gave her a win and 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Omari showed more strength early in game 2, but he didn't back it up very well. The Knights' Oreo stepped in to win on a four-ball run-out, sealing the series at 2-0. Oreo looked well on her way to a sweep in game 3 when Omari lit up the table with an eight-ball run-out. Oreo settled for just a 2-1 series win to get her to Capital City, where she meets the Sharpshooters' Sprinkles in the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Rudolph v. Starlight. The halfway point today comes in 7-ball with the green cue. Pacific's Starlight couldn't quite get a handle on the offense in game 1. Harrison's Rudolph had a couple misses, but his majority of the offense paid off with a win for the 1-0 series lead. The Specters' Rudolph had a poorly timed scratch in game 2, which the Volcanoes' Starlight punished two turns later with her three-ball run-out. Starlight's determined finish tied the series at 1. Starlight made three balls on the break in game 3 but missed contact on the 3. Rudolph took over with a four-ball run-out from ball-in-hand for the win and 2-1 series win. Rudolph is headed to round two.

Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Dreamy v. Stephanie. Back in 8-ball, the purple cue exits the day. Southridge's Stephanie had a good start to game 1, but Swordpoint's Dreamy made it close at the end. Dreamy suffered a scratch, which slowed her enough for Stephanie to win on a three-ball run-out. Stephanie is ahead 1-0 in the series. The Blades' Dreamy again found good offense in game 2, but it was the Defenders' Stephanie who used the 8 as a defensive agent. Stephanie baited Dreamy into missed contact, and then Stephanie potted the 8 to the bottom left for the win, securing the series at 2-0. Stephanie kept things close in game 3, but she couldn't close it out. Dreamy overcame a missed contact to work her way to the win. Stephanie won the series 2-1 to advance to the second round.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Goldy v. Katelynn. The blue cue is on for 9-ball. Royal's Katelynn had a missed contact on the 5 in game 1. Everton's Goldy turned the ball-in-hand into a four-ball run-out to cap a dominant showing that gave her the 1-0 series lead. The Crowns' Katelynn managed a four-ball run in the middle of game 2, but she missed on the 8. The Eagles' Goldy struck back by banking the 8 to the bottom side and the 9 diagonally to the top right for the win, which clinched the series at 2-0. Goldy continued her dominance in game 3, blasting a four-ball run early, executing a perfect kick on the 4 to the bottom right on her second turn, and adding a three-ball run-out for the win and 3-0 series sweep over Katelynn. Goldy is set to host Eastside Sharks sophomore Taylor M. in the second round.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Panda v. Wario. Tough competitors go at it in 7-ball with the blue cue. Southridge's Wario was all offense in game 1, with a three-ball run the highlight. Southern's Panda couldn't gain traction, and Wario made a pair for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Monarchs' Panda got a little more involved in the offense in game 2, but his cut on the 7 to the bottom side was left short. The Defenders' Wario converted the tap-in for the win, clinching the series at 2-0. Each player made a pair early in game 3, but it was Wario who won on a three-ball run-out. Wario kicked the 6 off the 7 and into the top side, then converted the 7 to the same pocket to sweep Panda 3-0. Wario will visit Terrace City Knights third-year Quincy in the second round.

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Nikolai v. Esmeralda. The blue cue goes again in 7-ball. Freedom's Nikolai nearly made the 7 on the break in game 1. Swordpoint's Esmeralda put in a good effort, but her miss on the 6 allowed Nikolai to pot the final pair for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Cascades' Nikolai made a pair on the break in game 2 and ran the table from there, keeping the Blades' Esmeralda from having a chance to even things up. Nikolai's dominant showing secured the series in his favor at 2-0. Esmeralda made a couple pairs of shots in game 3, but her delicate touch on the 6 left it at the top right. Nikolai made the final pair, finishing a 3-0 series sweep that sends him to the second round.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Toki v. Stripes. Eastern Hills rivals battle in 10-ball with the silver cue. Eastside's Toki popped off in game 1 with a five-ball run and a three-ball run-out. His firm offense was plenty to beat Freedom's Stripes, giving Toki a 1-0 series lead. While lacking the same consistency, the Sharks' Toki still played pretty well in game 2. He tried a 9-10 bank combination to the top right that failed, but the Cascades' Stripes couldn't make the 9 either. Toki then went with a regular combination to the same pocket, converting it for the win that sealed the series at 2-0. Game 3 was even slower with nothing to play for. Stripes had an error as she sank the 6, giving Toki ball-in-hand that he used to ignite a four-ball run-out for the win. Toki swept the series 3-0 and will visit another Eastern Hills rival in the Atlantic Pirates' Steven in the second round.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Dominic v. Dreamy. Veterans collide in 12-ball with the silver cue. Southern's Dominic ceded a wild-card ball on the game 1 break, but quickly established his offense anyway. Swordpoint's Dreamy held it to the end but couldn't finish the effort, and Dominic made a pair for the win to go ahead 1-0 in the series. The Monarchs' Dominic left the Blades' Dreamy with little positioning to start game 2. Dreamy still got down to her last ball, but missed contact set up Dominic's three-ball run-out, which he used to clinch the series at 2-0. Dominic had a lot of offense in game 3 early on, but Dreamy finally found a way to beat him with the help of a wild-card ball. Dominic settled for a 2-1 series win that sends him to the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Dewey v. Lorde. The silver cue's done after this Rotation series. Harrison's Dewey had the lead in the middle of game 1, but Capital City's Lorde took the lead on a three-ball run. A battle ensued, and Lorde got the 8-6 win with a pair of shots at the end, putting her ahead 1-0 in the series. The Sharpshooters' Lorde had a lot of offense early in game 2, but she didn't get a second wind. The Specters' Dewey slowly clawed back, and a three-ball run-out gave him the 8-6 win to tie the series at 1. Dewey struggled initially in game 3, letting Lorde establish a small lead. A pair of three-ball runs turned things around for Dewey, who earned the 8-3 win and won the series 2-1 to get to the second round.

Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Sally v. Sprinkles. The day ends with the blue cue playing 13-ball. Archtown's Sally made two solids and a stripes while scratching on the game 1 break. She gave Capital City's Sprinkles stripes, and Sprinkles made good use of the suit, earning an easy win for the 1-0 lead in the series. The Sharpshooters' Sprinkles worked a four-ball run off the game 2 break, but she went cold after that. A slow build helped the Arrows' Sally get good positioning as she rallied for the win to tie the series at 1. A close battle emerged in game 3, with Sally trying to go bottom to top while Sprinkles worked top to bottom on the table. Sprinkles got the edge in the end, winning on a three-ball run-out for a 2-1 series win. Sprinkles will play in the second round.

We'll be right back to it tomorrow as the First Round chugs along.
