Tournament X - First Round Day 29

We're back in action today with a full slate of games. Leading off...

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Charli v. Hughbert. The silver cue administers 7-ball between Hummingbirds teammates. Charli opened game 1 on a five-ball run before a battle on the 4 took some time. Hughbert then scratched on his attempt at the 7, and Charli won from ball-in-hand for the 1-0 series lead. In game 2, Charli suffered an early scratch, and Hughbert took control with a chaotic but successful six-ball run-out for the win. Hughbert's unlikely surge tied the series at 1. Hughbert looked a little scattered in game 3, especially with his double-kiss miss on the 6. Charli made the final pair of shots with poise for the 2-1 series win that allows her to host Modernistic Union veteran Kodiak in the second round.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Katharine v. Marsell. Shores teammates battle in 9-ball with the purple cue. Katharine seemed to be a little loose with her shots in game 1, including a pair of scratches, but Marsell couldn't capitalize at the end. Katharine made the final pair of shots for the win and 1-0 series lead. Katharine continued to struggle early in game 2 before turning in a four-ball run. Marsell countered immediately with a four-ball run-out for the win, tying the series at 1. Marsell held his own for awhile in game 3, but he scratched on the 7. Katharine potted the last two balls for the win, advancing with a 2-1 series win to host Capital City Sharpshooters newcomer Paps in the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Twinkie II v. Josie. The silver cue returns to action for a 7-ball series. Harrison's Twinkie II made quick work of game 1, taking the 5 to the top left and the 7 to the top right on the break for the win and 1-0 series lead over Oceanside's Josie. The Waves' Josie was again denied a shot in game 2, as the Specters' Twinkie II ran the table in seven shots. Twinkie II clinched the series at 2-0 in just about as dominant an effort as possible. Josie finally got an opportunity in game 3 and turned in a four-ball run, but Twinkie II answered with a three-ball run-out to complete the 3-0 series sweep. Twinkie II visits Infinity Torpedoes star Fluffina in the second round.

Amazon Field Exhibtion Hall, Golden: Strut v. Shelley. In 15-ball, the blue cue is used. Golden's Strut didn't have total control as Infinity's Shelley found a four-ball run and plenty of other offense in game 1. Strut had his share and struck for a pair at the end to get the win, putting him ahead 1-0 in the series. The Pilots' Strut had a bit of action in game 2 with a late four-ball run to counter some earlier offense from the Torpedoes' Shelley. Strut blew it on the 15, leaving it short of the bottom right, where Shelley tapped it in for the win to tie the series at 1. Game 3 started off with energy, but both players seemed to drop off a bit later. A tense finish saw Shelley miss the 15, and Strut buried it to the bottom right. Strut won the series 2-1 and will host Commerce Tradewinds youngster Rosemary in the second round.

Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Chris v. Melissa. Another 7-ball set uses the green cue. Capital City's Chris blasted a four-ball run from the break, but he staggered after that. Terrace City's Melissa made the last three balls over two turns for the win and 1-0 series lead. A back-and-forth game 2 saw the Knights' Melissa ends turns with a stick foul and a miss on the 7. The Sharpshooters' Chris answered both well, including making the 7 at the bottom left to tie the series at 1 game apiece. Chris collapsed quickly in game 3, failing to get contact on his second shot. Melissa made a pair of three-ball runs to snag the win and 2-1 series win, which sees her head to Harrison to visit the Specters' Rudolph in the second round.

Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Hoppy v. Hershey. The red cue is back in action with 12-ball. Archtown's Hoppy couldn't quite hang on in a tight battle in game 1, as her set-up shot on the 7 gave Stonebridge's Hershey the time to convert a three-ball run-out for the win. Hershey leads the series 1-0. The Wolves' Hershey overfilled the top left and gave the Arrows' Hoppy a wild-card ball on the game 2 break. Hoppy then turned in a four-ball run and put her last ball near the bottom right. A couple turns later, Hoppy won, tying the series at 1. Hershey had the lead early in game 3, but he couldn't make it stand up, as Hoppy applied pressure through better positioning. Hoppy made a pair at the end for the win and 2-1 series win. Hoppy will play in the second round.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Dustin v. Diddley. Northeastern rivals tangle in 13-ball with the blue cue. Central's Dustin made a pair on the break and a three-ball run in game 1, but Maplewood's Diddley fought him off with creativity and a splash of defense at the end. Dustin hit the 8 illegally, allowing Diddley to make the final pair from ball-in-hand for the 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Dustin posted a three-ball run early in game 2, but a scratch set him far back. The Lumberjacks' Diddley persisted on offense and rallied for the win to secure the series at 2-0. Dustin held the lead for a bit again in game 3, but Diddley did his part with a four-ball run-out to get the win for a 3-0 series sweep. Diddley is headed to the second round.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Neopolitan v. Taylor S. Two of last year's best meet in Accuracy with the red cue. Commerce's Taylor S. faltered at the very end of game 1, missing the last ball short at the top right. Pearl's Neopolitan held on for a 2-3 win and a 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Neopolitan scratched on the game 2 break, but she was able to stay competitive and force overtime versus the Tradewinds' Taylor S. Neopolitan's overtime break was empty, and Taylor S. picked off a shot at the top left to win 2-3, tying the series at 1. Taylor S. made a ball on the break and had a lot of good play early in game 3, but she fell apart and Neopolitan held true to win 2-5 this time. Neopolitan took the series 2-1 to get into the second round.

T-Mobile Center, Victoria: Spice v. Shawn. The green cue comes between captains in Rotation. Midland's Shawn put up a four-ball run to gain the lead in game 1 after a close start. Victoria's Spice battled back and got the win on a three-ball run-out for the 8-7 final score. Spice leads the series 1-0. The Spurs' Spice had some trouble with scratches in game 2, as those errors took a couple points off the board for her. The Predators' Shawn again used a four-ball run to get to the brink of victory, but this time he finished with an 8-5 win to tie the series at 1. Shawn held off Spice in game 3, as both players had three-ball runs late, but Shawn's was to earn an 8-4 win. Shawn's 2-1 series win sees him into the second round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Celestia v. Lorde. Solid players clash in 15-ball with the green cue. Oceanside's Celestia put in a great seven-ball run in game 1, but she missed the cut on the 15 to the top right. Capital City's Lorde made the cheap tap-in for the win, going ahead 1-0 in the series. The Sharpshooters' Lorde didn't do very well in game 2 either, unable to find much in the way of possession. The Waves' Celestia had her troubles until she made a four-ball run-out for the win. Celestia's late burst tied the series at 1. Game 3 saw tensions boil over for both players as shots continued to ping around the table. Lorde lost her cool with a late scratch, which allowed Celestia to earn the win from ball-in-hand for the 2-1 series win. Celestia will host the Central Warriors' Dustin in the second round.

McDonald's Hall, Atlantic: Isabella v. Katelynn. The green cue steps in again for 13-ball. Atlantic's Isabella played very well at the start of game 1, but a late fade in quality was poorly timed under the pressure of Royal's Katelynn. In the end, Isabella missed the 8 and Katelynn cleaned it up at the top left for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Crowns' Katelynn didn't find much success after taking the four corners on a run after the break in game 2. The Pirates' Isabella slowly and steadily roared back to get the win, completing the rally with a pair of shots to tie the series at 1. Isabella didn't allow Katelynn to respond, winning game 3 on the break as the 7 and 8 fell in the top left in quick order. Isabella's instant win gave her the series at 2-1, and she'll visit her cousin Solaris of the Commerce Tradewinds in the second round.

GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Lize v. Charli. The visitor's second series today is in 8-ball with the purple cue. Tysini's Charli had a four-ball run early on and a three-ball run later in game 1 while Southridge's Lize struggled to make anything. Charli eventually got the win and went ahead 1-0 in the series. The Defenders' Lize had a better start to game 2, getting very close to the 8 by the end. The Hummingbirds' Charli then sparked a massive comeback with a double-pot, and ended the seven-ball run-out with a banked shot on the 8 that deflected off the 2 and into the top left. Charli called that pocket, so she had the win to seal the series at 2-0. Charli used a five-ball run to play catch-up in game 3, but Lize answered later with a three-ball run-out capped by a kick of the 8 to the bottom side. Charli settled for a 2-1 series win, which puts her in position to visit TodavĂa Stills captain Easter in round two.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Ms. Puppy v. Pounce. Veterans meet for 15-ball in the green cue's last appearance today. Modernistic's Ms. Puppy played an up-tempo style early in game 1, but she ran out of steam at the end. Southern's Pounce outlasted her and got the five-ball run-out to put himself ahead 1-0 in the series. The Monarchs' Pounce contributed a bit more evenly with the Union's Ms. Puppy in game 2. At the end, Ms. Puppy committed an error, and Pounce used the ball-in-hand to sink the 10 and make the 11-15 combination at the bottom left for the win. This secured the series for Pounce at 2-0. Pounce failed to lock down game 3 quickly, allowing Ms. Puppy to get some real offense on the board. Ms. Puppy tried to bank the 15 to the top left, but the green cue has been no one's friend today with complex shots. Pounce made the 15 on a tap-in to complete the 3-0 series sweep that sets him up to host Capital City Sharpshooters captain Chris in the second round.

Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Solaris v. Kayla. The silver cue bows out with 10-ball. Commerce's Solaris deferred possession in the middle of a five-ball run by Royal's Kayla in game 1. Solaris would get a three-ball run later, but he rattled his bank of the 10 out of the top right, and Kayla tapped it in for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Solaris saw a little more balance in game 3, but he left the 10 at the top left as he tried to respond to the Crowns' Kayla posting a three-ball run. Kayla buried the winning shot to clinch the series at 2-0. Solaris wasn't able to get anything to connect in game 3, and Kayla took over with a four-ball run-out, ending with a double-pot of the 4 and 10 to the left corners. Kayla swept the series 3-0 to get into the second round.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Panda v. Salmo. Former teammates do battle with the purple cue in 12-ball. Southern's Panda had a decent start to game 1, but Diamond's Salmo established himself with the side pockets. Panda still got close with a late three-ball run, but Salmo cut his last ball to the top right for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Monarchs' Panda had an early pair in game 2, and he left defense at the bottom left. The Gems' Salmo had a humble beginning to one of his turns, but it became a six-ball run-out with the winning shot placed neatly around Panda's defense with millimeter precision. Salmo sealed the series at 2-0 with the run of brilliance. Salmo had some decent offense in game 3, but he gave away a wild-card ball. Panda would return the favor later, but he went on to pot a four-ball run-out on his next turn after Salmo failed to break Panda's defense. Salmo still won the series 2-1 and will visit Whitewater Shores veteran Katharine in the second round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Rocky v. Fuchsia. Ending the day, the red cue does Rotation. Oceanside's Rocky started well in game 1, but he hit a wall too soon. Infinity's Fuchsia chipped away to pull closer, then ahead, and to the 8-5 win for a 1-0 series lead in the visitor's favor. A more even start to game 2 ended up with the same result, as the Torpedoes' Fuchsia used a four-ball run to pull ahead. The Waves' Rocky got one back, but Fuchsia won 8-5 again to secure the series at 2-0. Fuchsia remained strong with five balls over her last two turns in game 3, leaving Rocky again hopeless to respond. Fuchsia won 8-4 to complete a 3-0 series sweep, and she'll visit Commerce Tradewinds star Solaris in the second round.

Tomorrow will mark two-thirds completion of the First Round.
