Tournament X - First Round Day 30

We're here to reach two-thirds completion of the First Round. Against prior information, the scheduled day off is expected to come in a week or so. Leading off today...

Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Spirit v. Princess. The green cue opens the day in 7-ball. Lighton's Spirit didn't get much in game 1, as Viewpoint Sound's Princess made a three-ball run and a took a pair at the end for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Meteors' Princess grew frustrated with the green cue in game 2, blasting a double-pot of the 5 to the bottom left and the 6 to the top side that ended in a scratch. The Prestige's Spirit shut it down with a shot on the 7 to the bottom side to tie the series at 1. Princess still couldn't get on track in game 3, and Spirit worked her way to a three-ball run-out instead. Spirit won the series 2-1 and will host the North Modernistic Nighthawks' Gal in the second round.

Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Lorde v. Smokey. The red cue comes aboard with 12-ball. Capital City's Lorde started game 1 on a four-ball run, and her positioning was good enough to hold off Whitewater's Smokey at the end. Lorde eventually made her final pair for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Lorde made another four-ball run to start game 2, forcing the Shores' Smokey to take a defensive stance. When Smokey failed to finish the game after removing his defense, Lorde potted her last pair for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Lorde had a three-ball run off the break in game 3, which Smokey quickly matched. Smokey had a run lined up but couldn't ignite it, and Lorde was able to sneak her last shot around his defense to earn the series sweep. Lorde is headed to the second round.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Gizmo v. Princess. The visitor's second series today is in 13-ball with the blue cue. North Modernistic's Gizmo double-potted at the left corners as he scratched on the game 1 break, and he left the 8 on the edge of the top left. Viewpoint Sound's Princess took one shot to set herself up, then used a five-ball run and a pair on the next turn to earn the tough win for a 1-0 lead in the series. The Meteors' Princess was fast again in game 2, getting down to her last ball. Her positioning was poor, and the Nighthawks' Gizmo roared back for the win on a four-ball run-out. This stood to tie the series at 1. Gizmo made one of each on the game 3 break, and he chose to play stripes. Princess got down to her last ball again, only for Gizmo to push back for the win and 2-1 series win. Gizmo will host a big rival in the Modernistic Union's Daisy in the second round.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Jennifer v. Frosty. The blue cue stays in action for this 9-ball set. Terrace City's Jennifer had a slight edge in an ugly game 1 win over Viewpoint Sound's Frosty. Neither player was that good on offense, but Jennifer will take a 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Jennifer was a little stronger and smoother in game 2, while the Meteors' Frosty made modest performance gains as well. Jennifer still took the win on a three-ball run-out, sealing the series at 2-0. Frosty had her best effort in game 3, finding a four-ball run that featured a double-pot of the 4 to the bottom side and the 5 to the bottom left. Frosty missed on the 8, and Jennifer made the last pair to complete a 3-0 series sweep that sends her to the second round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Jack v. Dewey. Northeastern rivals clash in 12-ball with the purple cue. Web City's Jack went with a fairly standard pattern of shooting in game 1, while Harrison's Dewey took a more unconventional route. It came down to the wire, as Dewey missed his last ball and Jack made his own for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Jack had a fairly standard first turn in game 2, but he was unprepared to answer a five-ball run from the Specters' Dewey. On the next turn, Dewey lightly tapped his last ball to the bottom right for the win, tying the series at 1. Dewey twice gave up a wild-card ball to Jack in game 3, with Jack returning the first one. Jack then ignited his offense over two turns to get the win after Dewey missed his last ball toward the top left. Jack won the game and the 2-1 series and will host the TodavĂa Stills' Sierra in the second round.

Intel Center, Diamond: Debby v. Dominic. Using the blue cue, these veterans play Rotation. Diamond's Debby failed to capitalize on her rally in game 1, as she was able to briefly pull even before Southern's Dominic posted a three-ball run-out for the 8-5 win. Dominic leads the series 1-0. The Monarchs' Dominic grew frustrated with misses in game 2, which didn't help him lock in his shots. The Gems' Debby pulled ahead with a three-ball run and added another of such length at the end to win 8-4, tying the series at 1. Dominic channeled his frustration into a lead in game 3, but Debby stormed back to win with a five-ball run-out. The 8-6 win gave Debby a 2-1 series win, allowing her to host Atlantic Pirates rookie Buddy in an Eastern Hills derby in the second round.

BMW RockDome, Westside: Slinks v. Cowzart. Former teammates meet in 9-ball with the green cue. Westside's Slinks capitalized on multiple scratches from Pacific's Cowzart in game 1. The last scratch saw Slinks deflect a shot off the 7 to pot the 9 to the top left from ball-in-hand. Slinks owns a 1-0 series lead. The Rockers' Slinks took a turn to dominance in game 2 with a four-ball run from the break and a five-ball run-out from ball-in-hand after the Volcanoes' Cowzart scratched on his only shot. Slinks clinched the series at 2-0. Slinks made three balls on the break in game 3, but Cowzart took over with five balls over his last two turns for his lone win in the series. Slinks' 2-1 series win was enough to set her up against Southridge Defenders star Wario in the second round.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Lily v. Shaggy. A rookie battles a captain in 10-ball with the silver cue. Eastside's Lily made the 10 on the game 1 break, but she couldn't wrangle it quickly after that. Whitewater's Shaggy took a couple swipes at it as well, but she settled down and won on a six-ball run-out. Shaggy leads the series 1-0. The Sharks' Lily didn't have much control in game 2, trying again to end it early to no avail. The Shores' Shaggy didn't have a big run this time, instead opting to make five balls over the last two turns for the win instead. Shaggy secured the series at 2-0 with this win. Shaggy scratched on the break, allowing Lily a little time to do work on offense. Shaggy then stepped in with a five-ball run-out this time, finishing a 3-0 series sweep. Shaggy will visit fellow captain Kayla of the Royal Crowns in the second round.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Twilight v. Prism. Back in 9-ball, we've got the blue cue active. Central's Twilight looked good at first in game 1, but she struggled on the 5. Eventually, Pronger's Prism popped off with a four-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Twilight looked a little stronger with a late three-ball run, but she missed on the 8. The Tridents' Prism fired back with a pair of shots for the win, clinching the series at 2-0 in the process. Twilight made a couple of shots early in game 3, but Prism answered with a three-ball run-out, deflecting a shot off the 3 to send the 9 to the top left for the win. Prism swept the series 3-0 and finds herself with another bid in the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Twinkie II v. Misty. Captains clash in 8-ball with the green cue. Westside's Misty ripped a quick five-ball run in game 1, allowing her to be generous with collateral damage to clear the path later. Harrison's Twinkie II failed to make a big run, and Misty put the 8 in the bottom left to pull ahead 1-0 in the series. The Rockers' Misty had a solid break in game 2, but the Specters' Twinkie II took the early lead. Twinkie II faded down the stretch, while Misty surged to make four balls over her last two turns for the win. Misty sealed the series at 2-0. Misty was well on her way to another win on a five-ball run in game 3 when she scratched and got hit in the finger by a stray ball. Injured to finish the game, she would later add insult with a scratch and illegally potted 8, gifting a game to Twinkie II. Misty's 2-1 series win sends her to the second round, where she'll hopefully have a little more luck with the equipment.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Kodiak v. Quincy. The red cue exits the day with 12-ball between Urban rivals. Modernistic's Kodiak started with a three-ball run and held defense in game 1. Terrace City's Quincy got down to his last ball, but missed a straight shot at the top right, allowing Kodiak to kick the winning shot to the top side for a 1-0 series lead. Both players began game 2 with a three-ball run, the only difference being that the Union's Kodiak yielded two wild-card balls to the Knights' Quincy. With flexibility galore, Quincy knocked out the sides and easily finished the win at the bottom right to tie the series at 1. Quincy scratched and gave away a wild-card ball on the game 3 break, and that would spell the end of his bid. Kodiak responded with a five-ball run-out for the win, taking the series 2-1. Kodiak will play as the visitor versus his Union teammate, the captain Ms. Puppy, in round two.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Gal v. Puff II. The blue cue's last series today is in 9-ball. North Modernistic's Gal didn't have the best grip on game 1, making only minimal offense. Boston's Puff II had a couple of good attacks, including a three-ball run-out that put her ahead 1-0 in the series. The Nighthawks' Gal showed a little more confidence with a three-ball run in game 2, but then she missed on the 6. The Swifts' Puff II took over, winning on a three-ball run-out again to secure the series at 2-0. Puff II did everything but win in game 3, making a five-ball run and a three-ball run before leaving the 9 at the bottom left. Gal tapped in the winning shot to avoid the sweep, while Puff II will travel to Terrace City to face the Knights' Jennifer in the second round.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Ms. Puppy v. Jack. Another 9-ball series uses the purple cue in the visitor's second appearance today. Modernistic's Ms. Puppy put in a good effort in game 1, but she twice missed the 9. Web City's Jack poached the win away with a tap-in at the bottom right for the 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Jack began game 2 with a five-ball run and then added a pair at the end in response to a pair from the Union's Ms. Puppy. Jack's well-earned win this time clinched the series in his favor at 2-0. Ms. Puppy had a four-ball run in the middle of game 3, but Jack fired back with a three-ball run-out for another quick win. Jack won the series 3-0 and will visit former teammate and current Pronger Trident Avril in the second round.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Peach v. Shelley. The run of Urban-hosted games ends with this 10-ball series using the purple cue. North Modernistic's Peach seemed to have the edge in game 1, but two misses on the 10 allowed Infinity's Shelley to step in and earn the win at the top left. Shelley leads the series 1-0. The Torpedoes' Shelley still had a dangerously low amount of offense in game 2, most obviously when the Nighthawks' Peach made a late four-ball run. Shelley had a chance but missed on the 10, and Peach buried it to the bottom right for the win to tie the series at 1. Peach kept the offense going with a four-ball run in game 3. Shelley didn't have much of a response in the middle, and Peach got the win with an 8-10 combination to the bottom left. Peach won the series 2-1 and will play host to her Nighthawks teammate Lionel in the second round.

T-Mobile Center, Victoria: Spice v. Twinkie I. Reality club-mates clash in 7-ball with the purple cue. Pacific's Twinkie I had most of the offense in game 1, but it was Victoria's Spice who corralled the 7 on a bank to the bottom side. Spice's narrow margins victory gave her a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Spice made a six-ball run from the break to lead off game 2, but missed her first try at the 7. The Volcanoes' Twinkie I failed to steal it from a long distance, and Spice was able to get the win that sealed the series at 2-0. Spice couldn't finish the sweep, as Twinkie I had a three-ball run and an absolutely hammered shot on the 7 to the bottom side to get her lone win of the series. Spice is set to play in the second round after a 2-1 series win.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Avril v. Steven. Eastern Hills rivals end the day using the silver cue in 12-ball. Pronger's Avril took solids on the break in game 1. Atlantic's Steven made a stripe, but his miss set up a crafty and precise five-ball run-out from Avril, who banked her last shot to the top right for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Tridents' Avril again made a five-ball run in game 2, but she couldn't get lined up for her last ball after the Pirates' Steven scratched. Steven slowly worked his way back and eventually won with a pair of shots, tying the series at 1. Avril played physical to slow down Steven in game 3, but it wasn't enough, as he lightly defended her necessary shots. Avril's last attempt set Steven up for the win at the top side, and he took the series 2-1 as well. Steven will visit the Southern Monarchs' Dominic in the second round.

We'll go again tomorrow as the final chunk of the First Round gets underway.
