Tournament XI - Second Round Day 1

After the administrative break, the Second Round is set to begin. Series remain in the three-game format for this round. First up...

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Goldy v. Autumn. The red cue will open the round in Rotation. Everton's Goldy went two at a time early in game 1, and while Diamond's Autumn constructed a three-ball run, she never really threatened for the lead. Goldy easily won 8-3 and went ahead 1-0 in the series. The Gems' Autumn had a better start in game 2, but the Eagles' Goldy replied with a five-ball run over the middle. The ending was still close, as Autumn missed the 14 at the top left and Goldy buried it for the 8-7 win to seal the series at 2-0. Game 3 moved even slower than the first two, with Goldy ultimately grinding out an 8-6 win to complete the 3-0 series sweep over Autumn. Goldy has the first bid to reach the bracket quarterfinals.

Apple Center, Todavía: Ruby v. Puff III. The blue cue gets the second series, playing in 9-ball. A slow start to game 1 faded as Todavía's Ruby put down a four-ball run, but she missed on the 9. Everton's Puff III stole the win with a shot at the bottom left, sinking the 9 for a 1-0 series lead. The Eagles' Puff III continued to yield a lot of offense in game 2, this time allowing the Stills' Ruby to sink a four-ball run and then pick up the 8 and 9 on the next two turns. Ruby's late surge tied the series at 1. Puff III scratched as she made the 1 in game 3, and that was all Ruby needed to take the 2-9 combination to the bottom right from ball-in-hand. Ruby won the series 2-1 and will host again in the bracket quarterfinals.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Whiskers v. Wario. The red cue is back for an 8-ball set. Southridge's Wario was the better player in game 1, but his three-rail bank on the 8 to the top right ended in a scratch to hand the win and 1-0 series lead to Maplewood's Whiskers. In game 2, the Lumberjacks' Whiskers did better to earn the win, controlling the pace of play while the Defenders' Wario struggled. Whiskers won on a three-ball run-out to clinch the series at 2-0. Game 3 saw Wario take back control of the offense initially before succumbing to Whiskers' five-ball run-out at the end. Whiskers swept the series 3-0 and will host again in the bracket quarterfinals.

Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Hoppy v. Diddley. East Division rivals tangle in 13-ball with the blue cue. Archtown's Hoppy had a strong offense in game 1 despite an early overfill, but she stalled out with two misses on the 8. Maplewood's Diddley kept it close enough to strike for the 2 at the bottom left and the 8 banked to the top side for the win and 1-0 series lead. Both players had intriguing positioning in game 2, but the Arrows' Hoppy illegally sank the 8 early, gifting the win to the Lumberjacks' Diddley, who secured the series at 2-0 in the process. Diddley did his best in game 2, but came up a little short as Hoppy held on for her lone win of the series. Diddley took a 2-1 series win to earn his place in the bracket quarterfinals.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Lily v. Nightfur. The silver cue's lone series today is in Rotation between South Division foes. Eastside's Lily eventually pulled away with the lead after a tight start in game 1, besting Zenith's Nightfur by an 8-3 score. Lily owns a 1-0 series lead. The Sharks' Lily kept things close throughout game 2, but she lost her pace after the midway mark. The Skywatchers' Nightfur was more effective at the end to earn an 8-6 win, tying the series at 1. In game 3, Nightfur pushed her way to the brink of victory, only to fall apart there. Lily rallied from behind on a three-ball run-out for the 8-7 win and 2-1 series win to get into the bracket quarterfinals.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Melissa v. Stealth. The purple cue draws in for a 13-ball series. Terrace City's Melissa pulled off a five-ball run early in game 1, sending Swordpoint's Stealth scrambling. Stealth scratched, and Melissa made the final pair of shots for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Melissa maintained a lead in game 2 as well, but she let the Blades' Stealth get close and then gave it away by scratching on the 8. Stealth gladly took the free win to tie the series at 1. In game 3, Stealth got off to a massive start, but he let Melissa get all the way onto the 8 before finally finishing it. Stealth narrowly won the series 2-1 and will move on to the bracket quarterfinals.

T-Mobile Center, Victoria: Sage v. Briana. The blue cue cycles in for this 9-ball battle. Queens' Briana lucked into her game 1 win, as her first look at the 1 caused deflections to drop the 5 in the top left and the 9 in the top side for the 1-0 series lead over Victoria's Sage. The Flames' Briana didn't enjoy the same luck in game 2, making a three-ball run in the middle before fading back. The Spurs' Sage picked up the final pair of shots for the win to tie the series at 1. Game 3 saw some tense play between the two opponents. Sage didn't get anything going in time, as Briana closed out with a three-ball run-out for the 2-1 series win. Briana is through to the bracket quarterfinals.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Lily v. Sydney S. The host's second series today uses the red cue in 9-ball. Eastside's Lily deployed a decoy shot as she tried to deflect the 7 early in game 1. Instead, she made a 2-9 combination to the bottom left for the win and 1-0 series lead over Boston's Sydney S. The Sharks' Lily couldn't get her offense right in game 2, and the Swifts' Sydney S. capitalized by making a 7-9 combination to the bottom left for the win. This tied the series at 1. In game 3, Lily converted a 1-9 bank combination to the bottom left on her second turn, taking the win and 2-1 series win over Sydney S. Lily will be on the road in the bracket quarterfinals.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Sydney S. v. Fluffina. The host completes a doubleheader in 8-ball with the green cue. Infinity's Fluffina didn't take a shot in game 1, winning for free as Boston's Sydney S. sank the 8 illegally on her second shot of the game. Fluffina leads the series 1-0. Game 2 went the distance, as the Torpedoes' Fluffina held a lead much of the time but lost some steam near the end. The Swifts' Sydney S. found her way successfully and banked the 8 to the top left for the win, tying the series at 1. Game 3 was fairly even for most of it, but Fluffina got just enough of an edge at the end to beat Sydney S. for the 2-1 series win. Fluffina heads on to the bracket quarterfinals.

Kraft Forum, Royal: Kacey v. Kitty. The blue cue checks out with this South Division battle in 7-ball. Royal's Kacey had a slow start, but she overwhelmed Midland's Kitty at the end of game 1 with a five-ball run-out. Kacey owns a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Kitty had too many mistakes in her play in game 2, leading to a relatively simple attack pattern for the final pair of shots that the Crowns' Kacey made. Kacey sealed the series at 2-0. In game 3, Kacey needed just two shots to make a 1-7 combination at the bottom right to complete a 3-0 series sweep over Kitty. Kacey will host her appearance in the bracket quarterfinals.

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Charli v. Ice Cream. Another 7-ball series uses the red cue. Tysini's Charli made a statement finish in game 1, double-potting the 3 and 6 to the top corners and the 5 and 7 to the left corners on consecutive shots for the win and 1-0 series lead over Boston's Ice Cream. The Hummingbirds' Charli made a pair on the break in game 2, but it took a scratch from the Swifts' Ice Cream to decide the game. Charli made the 7 from ball-in-hand for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. In game 3, Ice Cream again had a late chance go to waste, and Charli cleaned things up for the 3-0 series sweep. Charli is poised to host again in the bracket quarterfinals.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Rachel v. Hoppy. The purple cue is done for today after 15-ball. Whitewater's Rachel seemed to have more pace early on, but Archtown's Hoppy made a five-ball run later and carried enough momentum to get the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Arrows' Hoppy had some offense early in game 2, but the Shores' Rachel made a point to push the pace. It worked for Rachel, who capped a four-ball run-out with a 12-15 combination to the top left for the win, tying the series at 1. Rachel couldn't sustain her offense throughout game 3, which ended up being a slow battle at times. Hoppy ultimately won with smartly played banks and cuts on her final turn for the 2-1 series win. Hoppy will be on the road in the bracket quarterfinals.

Subway Arena, Stonebridge: Lindsay v. Nibbles. The red cue returns for 7-ball. Stonebridge's Lindsay was too inconsistent on offense in game 1, giving Web City's Nibbles plenty of chances to make an impact. Nibbles did so late for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Nibbles took control early in game 2 on a five-ball run, and he got possession back after the Wolves' Lindsay couldn't bank in the 7. Nibbles took the 7 to the bottom right for the win, securing the series at 2-0. In game 3, Nibbles took things easy on offense. Lindsay surged on a three-ball run and picked up the 7 a turn later after Nibbles scratched late. Nibbles won the series 2-1 and will be a visitor in his bracket quarterfinals series.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Bright v. Lorde. The red cue exits after a 13-ball series. Pearl's Bright quickly fell behind as Southern's Lorde established good positioning in game 1. Lorde played patiently at the end and won after Bright failed to build a comeback run, giving Lorde the 1-0 series lead. The Monarchs' Lorde was a little slower at the start of game 2, but the Surfers' Bright again helped her by going through her defense. Lorde turned that into a three-ball run-out after a brilliant cut on the 6 to the bottom side. Lorde clinched the series at 2-0 with this win. In game 3, Lorde came very close to the win without any extra generosity from Bright, who then rallied from behind to take a four-ball run-out. Lorde still won the series 2-1 and will play a visiting role in the bracket quarterfinals.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Oreo v. Rudolph. The day ends in 7-ball with the green cue. Eastside's Rudolph took control after a terrible start, making a four-ball run that ended in a scratch. Terrace City's Oreo then finished on the 7 from ball-in-hand to the bottom right for the 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Oreo put the 7 near the bottom side on the game 2 break, then buried it on a fake deflection play off the 1 that missed on the 5 but sent the 2 to bump the 7 down. The trickery sufficed to give Oreo the 2-0 series lead over the Sharks' Rudolph. Game 3 went fast at first before a battle on the 7 that ended with a little luck for Oreo to get the 3-0 series sweep over Rudolph. Oreo will play on into the bracket quarterfinals.

The Second Round is expected to last through most of the rest of August.
