After an unscheduled day off, we're back with a full slate today. First up...
Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Mams v. Sydney C. The blue cue makes the start in 7-ball. Modernistic's Sydney C. was just a little too unsteady on offense in this series, allowing Swordpoint's Mams to clean up some shots. Mams made the final pair for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Union's Sydney C. made a five-ball run in game 2 to speed things up, but her miss on the 6 allowed the Blades' Mams to again win on the final pair. Mams clinched the series at 2-0. Sydney C. couldn't make clean contact in game 3, and Mams won early this time with a 3-7 combination to the bottom left. Mams swept the series 3-0 and will head to the bracket quarterfinals.
Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Greg v. Marsell. The silver cue gets the second series today, playing in 12-ball. Archtown's Greg struck first in game 1, but his offense didn't pan out well after that. Whitewater's Marsell had more successful shot turns, and he easily took the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Marsell continued to play well early in game 2, although he had plenty of work to do. The Arrows' Greg tried to deploy some defense, but Marsell danced out of it for a four-ball run-out to get the win that sealed the series at 2-0. Marsell couldn't get his offense to click in game 3, leading to Greg having a fairly easy path to his lone win. Marsell won the series 2-1 and will play on into the bracket quarterfinals.
Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Cubby v. Chris. The green cue completes the venue doubleheader in Rotation. Capital City's Chris got off to a good start, and while Archtown's Cubby answered him once, Chris won 8-2 on a four-ball run-out to take the win. Chris leads the series 1-0. The Sharpshooters' Chris enjoyed a similar flow in game 2, as the Arrows' Cubby kept it close initially before Chris won on a five-ball run-out that ended with a 9-15 combination at the bottom left. Chris secured the series at 2-0 with this win. Chris had to fight a little harder for game 3, which will go down as the gnat-killer game after he swatted the bugs out of the air. Cubby came close, but Chris took an 8-6 result to sweep the series 3-0 and earn his visiting position in the bracket quarterfinals.
Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Bucco v. Kelsea. The blue cue is back in action for 8-ball to begin a long streak of series. Harrison's Bucco had the early lead in game 1, but he couldn't sustain it very well. Capital City's Kelsea rallied on a five-ball run and added the 8 at the top left two turns later for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Kelsea didn't have the same pace in game 2, while the Specters' Bucco stepped up a little bit. This led to Bucco maintaining a lead and earning the win to tie the series at 1. In game 3, Kelsea made an unexpected four-ball run early and added a four-ball run-out to thoroughly defeat Bucco for the 2-1 series win. Kelsea will be on the road again in the bracket quarterfinals.
Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Marsell v. Blaze. The next series is in 10-ball for the blue cue. Whitewater's Marsell had some good play and put the 10 near the top left, but Infinity's Blaze was just as good and won on a 6-10 bank combination. Blaze leads the series 1-0. The Shores' Marsell continued to land some shots in game 2, but it didn't pay off. The Torpedoes' Blaze stepped up late for a four-ball run-out to claim the win, clinching the series at 2-0 in the process. Blaze completed a big sweep with a four-ball run and a pair on consecutive turns as Marsell lost his touch late in game 3. Blaze's 3-0 series win puts him into the bracket quarterfinals.
Mitsubishi Arena, Apex: Blair v. Klaus. Back in 8-ball, the blue cue is halfway through its run. Apex's Blair had a strong game 1, keeping pace with Central's Klaus early on, then breaking away late on a three-ball run-out for the win. Blair holds a 1-0 series lead. The Wonders' Blair kept things as close as he could in game 2, but his choppy offense failed him at the end. The Warriors' Klaus paced his offense just well enough to win, tying the series at 1. Veteran experience prevailed in the end, as the rookie Blair took too long to get going in game 3, while Klaus set himself up for an easy finish to win the series 2-1. Klaus will be on the road again in the bracket quarterfinals.
Home Depot Forum, Web City: Wild Thing v. Violetta. On to Accuracy between burgeoning rivals as the blue cue stays on. Web City's Wild Thing had a better start in game 1, and while Queens' Violetta pulled even, she also missed on the last ball. Wild Thing converted it for a 3-4 win to go ahead 1-0 in the series. Both players improved in game 2, keeping things tied to force overtime. The Spiders' Wild Thing missed on his first and third shots in the extra rack before the Flames' Violetta sealed a 2-3 win to tie the series at 1. Wild Thing fell behind somewhat quickly in game 3, and he never had a chance to catch up. Violetta held her ground well in a 2-4 win to take the series 2-1 as she earns a visiting position in the bracket quarterfinals.
Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Dominic v. Delila. The blue cue gets a taste of Rotation here. Atlantic's Delila had a nice surge with a four-ball run over the middle of game 1, but she couldn't bring it home. Southern's Dominic responded on a three-ball run and added a pair for the win and 1-0 series lead. A tight battle early on stayed that way throughout. The Pirates' Delila didn't seem to find a way to get ahead, and the Monarchs' Dominic fended off some poor shot selection to end up with an 8-6 win. Dominic sealed the series at 2-0. Delila had to go on a rally just to make game 3 look close, as Dominic kicked the 13 into the top side for the 8-5 win and 3-0 series sweep. Dominic will get another home series in the bracket quarterfinals.
Volkswagen BeetleDome, Viewpoint Sound: Hoot v. Kitty. The blue cue's run is done in 9-ball. Midland's Kitty couldn't find any traction on offense, and Viewpoint Sound's Hoot gladly picked up the win on a 5-8-9 combination to the bottom left from ball-in-hand. Hoot owns a 1-0 series lead. The Meteors' Hoot opened with a five-ball run in game 2, bringing much stronger pace in this one. The Predators' Kitty stalled him out later and then made her own four-ball run-out for the win to tie the series at 1. Kitty had most of the offense in game 3 with five balls over her first two turns, but Hoot was sharp enough at the end to steal the win on a three-ball run-out. Hoot will host Queens Flames veteran Briana in the bracket quarterfinals after this 2-1 series win.
Intel Center, Diamond: Shadow v. Bandit. The purple cue's lone series today is in 13-ball. Diamond's Shadow was more productive early in game 1 while Swordpoint's Bandit focused on set-up play. Shadow then executed better at the end too, earning the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Blades' Bandit put in a little more offensive effort earlier in game 2, but an intentional scratch was all the Gems' Shadow needed to work out of difficult positioning. Shadow then made a pair on his last turn for the win to secure the series at 2-0. Bandit had his closest look at a win in game 3, but he couldn't corral the 8 at the end before Shadow struck for the 3-0 series sweep. Shadow will host Everton Eagles star Vincent in the bracket quarterfinals.
FedEx Arena, Eastside: Toki v. Leandra. The blue cue cycles in again for 8-ball. Eastside's Toki did great work defensively to stall out Tysini's Leandra late in game 1. This bought Toki time to catch up and ultimately earn the win for a 1-0 lead in the series. The Sharks' Toki had a decent showing in game 2, but he benefited most from the Hummingbirds' Leandra scratching late. Toki then buried a three-ball run-out for the win to seal the series at 2-0. Toki couldn't keep up the attacking pace in game 3, leading to Leandra finding a bit more offense as she earned her lone win. Toki's 2-1 series win gets him into a road position in the bracket quarterfinals. This was Leandra's 100th unique opponent.
Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Pounce v. Chris. A West Division captains' battle uses the green cue in 13-ball. Capital City's Chris had reasonable offense early on, but some scratches and bad positioning turned the tide toward Southern's Pounce, who picked up the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Monarchs' Pounce couldn't find a path to the lead in game 2, as the Sharpshooters' Chris jumped ahead and then defended well enough until he could pick up the win. The series is tied at 1. Chris got by on the shortcut in game 3, making the 8 with a deft deflection on the break for an instant win and 2-1 series win over Pounce. Chris will head to the bracket quarterfinals, where he'll be on the road again.
Ford Forum, Pronger: Spot v. Boots. The red cue gets one look today in 9-ball. Pronger's Spot had better offense early and late in game 1, closing out his win with a three-ball run-out for the 1-0 series lead over Pearl's Boots. The Surfers' Boots had a moment of glory in game 2 with a five-ball run, but she faltered immediately after that surge. The Tridents' Spot had to take a little time before collecting his win to clinch the series at 2-0. Boots had another good push late in game 3 with a three-ball run, but she couldn't bring it home with a miss on the 9. Spot buried it to the top left and swept the series 3-0 to earn his visiting position in the bracket quarterfinals.
Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Puff II v. Potter. The blue cue exits the day after Accuracy. After an excellent regulation session in game 1, both players got shaky early in overtime. Harrison's Puff II ultimately lost when she couldn't make a shot about halfway through, giving Pronger's Potter a 3-4 win and 1-0 series lead. Another even battle in game 2 required overtime, although both players were significantly worse this time. The Tridents' Potter let it slip away on his lone shots in overtime as the Specters' Puff II took a 5-6 win to tie the series at 1. Puff II couldn't quite keep the pace in game 3, falling apart late as Potter switched from attack to positioning to protect a lead. Potter won 1-3 and took the series 2-1, lining him up to host the Queens Flames' Violetta in the bracket quarterfinals.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Puff I v. Dreamy. The silver cue wraps things up with Rotation. Modernistic's Puff I had to work hard for the win in game 1, as she stalled out after a good start. Swordpoint's Dreamy caught up and took the lead near the end, but she fell off the pace and Puff I had an 8-7 win to go ahead 1-0 in the series. The Blades' Dreamy kept her offense up early in game 2, taking the initial lead and making it stick for an 8-6 win over the Union's Puff I. The series is tied at 1. In game 3, another choppy battle gave way to Dreamy burying a four-ball run-out to take an 8-5 win for the 2-1 series win. Dreamy will remain on the road in the bracket quarterfinals.
A heatwave is on the way, but Tournament XI action is not expected to be interrupted over the next three to four days.
