Due to more procrastination on my part, the league is back to being a bit behind. I hope to change this over the weekend, but it may be difficult to get as far as hoped before the spring break. This week will begin with...
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: The week sees its first Bubble Watch game quite early, as the Torpedoes travel in hopes of a sweep to keep recent success going. Smudge did pretty well with 585 for Infinity, despite not having the best swing. Sally hit only 199 for Archtown in response. Shelley hit 411 more to extend the Torpedoes lead nicely. Sleepy B. lost control early on, scoring only 36 for the Arrows as they are trailing significantly now. Gabe faltered with 162 for Infinity as scoring is not all that high so far. Ruby nearly helped Archtown cover the deficit, slicing 798 on her turn to make it a close game with the final players coming to bat. Whiskers blasted 1262 for the Torpedoes, giving them 2420 in what should be a win with an epic performance against her former team. Dusky didn't go quietly, but eventually fell with 421 as the Arrows closed at 1454 in the loss. Infinity keeps improving their playoff hopes, going to 27-23 on a seven-game winning streak, while Archtown is down to 18-27.
McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: The Gems got the first win in this Eastern Hills derby this season, but the Pirates are heavily favored to earn a split. Smokey churned out 479 for Diamond, his best effort in weeks. Delila couldn't keep up, hitting only 216 for Atlantic as they fall behind early on. Citrus unleashed 1033 for the Gems in a big effort, riding an effective groove to grab that lead. Amber did well, driving 487 for the Pirates, but they are still well behind at the halfway mark. Pedey slipped up with 93 for Diamond, potentially opening the door again. Americus didn't capitalize very well, getting some back with 264 for Atlantic but still keeping them behind. Cassandra tacked on 336 to give the Gems a final of 1941. Dominic couldn't produce, hitting a weak 113 as the Pirates lose in full HD with 1080. Diamond gets a surprise season sweep over their rivals, improving to 21-30, while Atlantic is at 25-21 and could be in danger if they can't right the ship soon.
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The Swifts have a chance to sweep the Waves and gain ground on the Center Division lead in the process. Snuggle set a high bar at the start, lining 635 for Oceanside's first offensive motion. Patches had only 117 for Boston as the home teams continue to start poorly. Bells added 231 for the Waves, keeping their lead fairly steady. Puff II had a pathetic 99 as the Swifts seem to be self-destructing in this game. Alyssa scored a reasonable 308 to keep Oceanside in a position of strength. Gradley rallied for 566 for Boston, making a significant cut into the deficit, but leaving a lot of work to be done. Pounce had a couple of false starts before he settled in to produce 458 for the Waves, putting their final score at 1632. Sweetheart made a big comeback attempt, but 691 left the Swifts short with 1473 in the loss. Oceanside salvaged a split and boosted their playoff chances as they go to 29-21, while dumping Boston at 34-18 with the loss.
Capital City SuperCenter: The Meteors have a chance to sweep the Sharpshooters, but the hosts need the win far more. Mr. Snowman took big swings on his turn, working well at first but then getting wild as he posted 346 for Viewpoint Sound. Chris answered with 407 for Capital City, giving them a narrow initial lead. Mams had only 64 for the Meteors, allowing things to get bad for them. Missy's boom-or-bust offense went boom with 535 for the Sharpshooters, adding nicely to their lead. Zach didn't do a lot on his turn, grabbing 164 as Viewpoint Sound gets farther behind. Sprinkles hit a soft 224 for Capital City, maintaining the lead late in the game. Kelly made a huge rally with 819 for the Meteors, forcing a response from the hosts as the visitors finish with 1393. Dani couldn't do it for the Sharpshooters, and they lost with 1250 as she scored a meager 84. Viewpoint Sound is up to 20-29 on the year, while Capital City's five-game losing streak sees them drop to 25-30, almost assuredly out of playoff contention in a realistic sense.
Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: The Gems face another East Division foe, and they look for a sweep on the Warriors this time, who are in pursuit of fourth place in the league right now. Smokey took a bad swing, and it ended his effort at just 46 for Diamond. Twilight hammered 809 for Central to give them a massive lead. Citrus fired back with 658 for the Gems, making an impressively strong series of swings to mitigate the damage. Dustin faltered with 105 for the Warriors, leaving them a tad vulnerable at the midway point of the game. Pedey drilled 564 for Diamond, putting them ahead and adding some pressure for the hosts. Noelle played too aggressive and ended with a paltry 96 for Central, who are now definitively behind with a player each to go. Cassandra posted 320 to put the Gems at 1588 overall. Gizmo was far from sufficient, hitting just 80 as the Warriors lose with 1090. Diamond has upset two division rivals in a row to get to 22-30, while Central is now 31-20, in a three-way tie for seventh place.
Nike Field, Commerce: The Center Division-leading Tradewinds recently humiliated the West Division-leading Blades back in Swordpoint two weeks ago, and look for the sweep here. Snowball had another embarrassing effort with a measly 21 for Swordpoint. Tigerette staked out a big lead with 703 for Commerce, burying her daughter's poor effort. Dreamy covered the deficit with 766 for the Blades, making it a competitive game again. Ice Cream deftly handled odd bounces, but ended with 289 as the Tradewinds retain a smaller lead. Shawn carried Swordpoint further with 425, retaking a lead for now. Lionel put Commerce on the attack again, pounding 692 to boost their lead late in the game. Stealth did enough with 624 for the Blades to force a response as they end with 1836. Lorde chopped 287 to put the Tradewinds at 1971 in the win. Commerce gets a big victory to sweep the Blades, going to 38-15, while Swordpoint's fourth straight loss puts them at 31-19, just marginally ahead of the Volcanoes and Hummingbirds for the division lead. The win secures the Tradewinds a playoff berth.
The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Gems meet the Flames for the first time this season, with the next meeting a little over a week away. Crystal didn't do well with only 103 for Queens at the start, getting taken down by a deflection. Smokey turned in another disappointment with 72 for Diamond as the game starts slowly. Kayla proved sturdier in providing the Flames with 336 on her turn. Citrus got out of a proper batting stance and flung 117 for the Gems as they are farther behind now. Max had a composed turn for Queens, slapping a firm 503 to boost their lead again. Pedey couldn't dig Diamond out of trouble, scoring 272 as things get more hopeless for the embattled team. Paige tacked on 651 for the Flames, putting them at a final of 1593 in what should be a win. Cassandra's 128 brought the Gems to a new low with only 589 total in the loss. Queens is at 19-33, while a three-game winning streak for Diamond ends with them now at 22-31.
HP Field, Eastside: The Sharks and Swifts meet for the first time this season, with the return match in two weeks. Patched began by pummeling 989 for Boston to set a sharp tone immediately. Graham countered with 451 for Eastside, getting some of the deficit covered with a strong turn in its own right. Puff II had another unfortunate bounce in a season plagued by them, hitting a meager 75 for the Swifts. Chelsea nearly made the best of a scattered situation, but faltered and ended with 291 for the Sharks. Gradley continued a season of steady play with 728 for Boston, extending their lead quite a bit. Taylor couldn't put up much of an answer with only 105 for Eastside. Sweetheart tapped 233 to put the Swifts at 2025 in a nice bounce-back performance for the team. Niki grabbed 379, but the Sharks took the loss with 1226. Boston is back in the hunt at 35-18 as they chase second place, while Eastside is off the Bubble Watch now at 25-29.
Chevrolet Field, Everton: The Waves will be the latest team to challenge the Eagles in their fortress-like nest, with failure resulting in them getting swept. Snuggle pumped out a quick 361 in a frenzied hitting routine for Oceanside, a decent start. Goldy continued her insane six-week stretch with 1032 for Everton, bashing them to a nice lead. Bells collected 248 as the Waves don't look up to the task here. Puff III clubbed another 793 for the Eagles, as if they needed much more of a lead. Alyssa swung 276 for Oceanside, but it's all window dressing at this point. Cleo poked 376 to contribute her bit to the Everton lead. Pounce rallied with 786 for the Waves, but they were still far behind at 1671 in the loss. Blizzard had a rough finish, but her 66 was icing for a final of 2267 in the Eagles win. Everton has just raised the floor of where they can finish in the league significantly by going to 44-10, while Oceanside slips to a still-healthy 29-22.
Toyota Pitch, Freedom: On the Bubble Watch, the Cascades look to avoid a sweep by bringing in the Surfers, a pair of teams that have had mixed results at times this year. Watermelon had a shaky start with only 249 for Pearl, not the best first attack. Jasmine felt ripped off by getting only 173 after a few balls fell out of reach on the pitch, but Freedom will start from behind anyway. Neopolitan played very deliberately but also for quite awhile, wrangling 746 to give the Surfers a better lead. Stinky fumbled his way to 178 as the Cascades are having a poor output game. Wings misplayed a deflection and had just 153 for Pearl as their leads weakens a bit. Roxy had no answer with only 36 for Freedom, and they are falling hard now. Cowzart went big at the end for the Surfers, striking 637 to put them at 1785 overall. Nikolai had only 209 for the Cascades, and they lost with 596. Pearl's win gives them a sweep and puts their record at 28-20, while Freedom drops to 26-24 with the loss, and they are even more on the bubble.
Amazon Field, Golden: The first segment of the week will end with the Pilots seeking a sweep over the Arrows. Sally played well with 474 for Archtown as she opens the game up cleanly. Valencia had a few troubles with her swing quality, and it put her at 291 for Golden as they'll play from behind. Sleepy B. got too aggressive on her earned optional replay for a technical error, and ended at only 225 for the Arrows. Dusty controversially got away with a technical error, as the referee didn't call it, and Dusty was allowed to add 816 to the Pilots offense as they take the lead. Ruby got Archtown incredibly close with her 405, shrinking the deficit to a microscopic level for now. Strut let his play slip as he pulled in 272 for Golden to restore a smaller lead. Dusky produced 416 to put the Arrows at 1520 total, forcing a response from the hosts. A. Charlton had 295 for the Pilots on her turn, but still complained about a stick pitch ending it early, even as the team won with 1674. Golden halts a recent skid with a 32-20 record in a tie for sixth now, while a fourth straight loss sends Archtown to 18-28.
More to come, hopefully later tonight, as the pre-spring blitz enters its final calendar week.
