We're back after the Spring Break, beginning this week with...
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: The Arrows look for a sweep over the Defenders to get things going, having won three weeks ago in Southridge. Boots hit a reasonable 256 for Southridge, a decent score given how long a layoff the league has had. Sally gave Archtown a minor lead with her 321 to get things going. Debby continued her recent road strengths with 626 for the Defenders, giving them a better second effort. Sleepy B. faltered with 69 for the Arrows, putting them far back. J. Garcia also slipped with just 40 for Southridge. Ruby couldn't cash in, continuing the sloppy play with a meager 48 for Archtown. Shaggy didn't end confidently, taking only 216 to put the Defenders at 1138. Dusky did all she could with a strong 550, but the Arrows dropped it at 988. Southridge earns a series split to get to 23-29 on their fifth straight win, while Archtown is 18-29 on a fifth straight loss.
McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: It's a big first meeting of the year for these Eastern rivals, who will meet again soon. Fluffina hauled in 470 to stake out a decent lead for Maplewood. Delila fell with 231 for Atlantic, putting them behind from the start. Bryant smacked another 536 for the Lumberjacks, padding their lead quite nicely. Amber chopped back with 471 for the Pirates, keeping them competitive. Diddley exposed Maplewood a bit, taking just 160 and making them vulnerable. Americus made a significant dent in the deficit with 396 for Atlantic, setting up a tight finish for the final players. Cubby got knocked down by a deflection at 157 for the Lumberjacks, leaving them with 1323, which is far from safe. Dominic was not up to the task, scoring a weak 102 to put the Pirates in a loss with 1200 even. Maplewood looked shaky but got the win to go to 26-22 in fourteenth place, passing the 25-22 Atlantic, who are on a four-game losing streak.
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The second half of this year's Cola War sees the Swifts lined up for a sweep after an early season victory over the Prestige in Lighton. Acorn lined 497 for Lighton to start off well. Patches set the bar higher, slapping 750 for Boston to give them the initial lead. Spirit had a choppy turn for the Prestige, and it was also short with only 96 to add to their offense. The break served Puff II well, as she lifted 470 to extend the Swifts lead. Twinkie I managed only 171 for Lighton as the deficit grows. Gradley put up 264 to maintain the Boston lead as the final players come up to bat. Lydia couldn't cover the deficit, taking only 136 for the Prestige, and they lost with 900 overall. Sweetheart swung 525 to cap the Swifts efforts at 2009 in a big win. Boston sweeps the Cola War and goes to 36-18, while Lighton is 29-23 after the loss.
Capital City SuperCenter: The Sharpshooters want to sweep the Tridents after a previous win on the road. Strawberry clobbered 620 for Pronger to open the scoring in a surprising fashion. Chris replied with 414 for Capital City, keeping them within striking distance in a high-scoring start. Hoot fell apart with 33 for the Tridents, his worst road effort of the year after solid consistency for weeks on end. Missy made up some ground with 162 for the Sharpshooters, but they trail halfway through the game. Precious did little to alleviate the pressure, hitting a paltry 90 for Pronger. Sprinkles covered the deficit with 225 for Capital City, and they own a small lead with a player each to go. Paps flicked 243 for the Tridents, forcing a response as they close with 986. Dani disappointed the Sharpshooters once again, scoring only 113 to put them at 914 in a fourth straight home loss. Pronger's surprise win takes them to 18-34, while a seventh loss in a row sees Capital City at 25-32.
Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: These above-average teams meet again next week in Lighton to complete their season series. Acorn produced a fairly average 265 for Lighton to lead off. Twilight had only 108 as a deflection forced her onto her backhand with a bit too much pace to control, putting Central behind early on. Spirit got twisted and hit a ball backwards and low, scoring only 117 as the Prestige hold a tenuous lead. Dustin emerged with 708 for the Warriors, hauling them to a significant lead. Twinkie I crushed 1201 for Lighton in response, giving them a massive lead now. Noelle got some of it back with 335 for Central, but they'll need a lot more to get the game. Lydia flipped 267 to put the Prestige at a final of 1850. Gizmo had a weak 63 for the Warriors, and they lost with 1214. Lighton is up to 30-23 and occupying twelfth place, while Central slides to 31-21 and ninth.
Nike Field, Commerce: The Tradewinds look for a sweep after having spoiled the Cascades' home opener this season. Jasmine carved out 774 for Freedom, setting a tough tone early on. Tigerette replied with 425 for Commerce, but they're still behind. Stinky had only 153 for the Cascades, allowing their lead to slip a bit. Ice Cream started swinging erratically at the end of her turn, which hastened her end, but her 359 is a solid effort to cut the deficit for the Tradewinds. Roxy tossed up 263 for Freedom, trying to get their lead to hold against a tough opponent. Lionel hammered 590 to give Commerce a late lead. Nikolai fired one last shot for the Cascades, ripping 893 to put them at 2083 overall. Lorde did enough to steal the game for the Tradewinds, as her 744 gave them 2118 in a gutsy win. Commerce is up to 39-15, while Freedom drops to 26-25, holding sixteenth by an ever-more-thin margin.
The Intel Pitch, Diamond: In their previous meeting, the Waves took a low-scoring win over the Gems while at home. Snuggle hit a modest 193 to begin for Oceanside. Smokey proved unable to catch that, but his 184 for Diamond breaks a six-week home slump that saw him fail to break into triple-digits. Bells picked up a big 547 for the Waves, giving them a better lead. Citrus blasted 958 to give the Gems the lead at the halfway mark in explosive fashion. Alyssa had 243 for Oceanside, failing to cover the deficit as the visitors find themselves in trouble. Pedey failed to secure the lead, tapping 149 as Diamond is not out of reach yet. Pounce's 260 put the Waves short of forcing a response with a total of 1243 in their loss. Cassandra unleashed 523 for the Gems, giving them the win with 1814 as their final. Diamond snaps a four-game home losing streak as they improve to 23-31, while Oceanside falls to 30-23.
HP Field, Eastside: The Surfers can sweep the Sharks here, but only if they can break out of their recent road woes. Watermelon clubbed 681 to give Pearl a wonderful first attack. Graham collected 295 in a decent showing for Eastside. Neopolitan left the Surfers vulnerable when she hit a meager 98 for them. Chelsea sliced 941 to give the Sharks the lead halfway through the game in a bold effort. Wings got 304 back for Pearl, but the deficit went uncovered as the hosts can now break away. Taylor failed to do so for Eastside, posting a measly 80 as their lead is now vulnerable. Cowzart couldn't reach the mark, hitting a pathetic 64 to give the Surfers a loss on 1147 total. Niki tallied an extra 1024 to put the Sharks at 2340, making it look like a brutal beatdown. Eastside stays alive in the fight for the last playoff spot, going to 26-29 to end an eight-game losing streak, while Pearl slips to 29-23 and into a tie for twelfth place.
Chevrolet Field, Everton: Arguably the biggest game of the week sees the Eagles attempt a sweep on the Swifts as first place hosts third, with the latter also having a chance to clinch. Patches batted 417 for Boston at the start, a good appearance. Goldy got beat with a high-arcing ball that ended her turn at 343 for Everton. Puff II left the Swifts vulnerable as she hit a measly 33 on a disappointing turn. Puff III grabbed 304 for the Eagles, giving them a minor lead at the halfway mark. Gradley launched 577 for Boston to keep them in the fight, regaining a lead for them. Cleo was shaky, taking only 240 for Everton as they'll trail with a player each to go. Sweetheart had 53 for the Swifts, putting them at a highly vulnerable 1080 for their final. Blizzard edged the Eagles ahead with 213, putting them at 1100 in a close win that lived up to its billing. Everton's won ten straight overall and fourteen in a row at home to get to 45-10, while Boston falls to 36-19, meaning clinching a playoff spot will have to wait.
Toyota Pitch, Freedom: These teams will meet again in the home finale for the Hummingbirds. Princess slugged 1125 at the start for Tysini, pacing their attack quite well. Jasmine had a simple 388 for Freedom, but they'll need more in this game. Leandra cancelled that out with her 447 for the Hummingbirds, who have full control of this game. Stinky managed 183 for the Cascades, and they fall farther behind. Charli drilled another 611 to extend the Tysini lead by a healthy margin. Roxy gained no ground with her 235 for Freedom, as they seem to have hit the skids tonight. Bright iced the Hummingbirds' efforts with 120 individually for 2303 overall in what should be a big win. Nikolai butchered his turn, taking a pathetic 2 points after a deflection, leaving the Cascades with 808. Tysini made quick work of this game, improving to 33-19 and into fourth place and the West Division lead, while Freedom edges closer to danger with a 26-26 record.
Amazon Field, Golden: The second installment of this year's Doubles Derby sees the Swifts eyeing a sweep and a playoff berth if they can get the win over a division rival. Patches dazzled with the bat, using a backhand to keep herself going before ending at 711 for Boston. Valencia melted under pressure with only 25 for Golden. Puff II tacked on 472 more for the Swifts, boosting their lead. Dusty didn't have a great effort, scoring only 126 for the Pilots, who are getting served in this one. Gradley posted 288 as Boston continues to cruise in this game. Strut had a meager 96 for Golden, and they are reserved to taking a loss. Sweetheart capped the Swifts efforts with 373 herself for a final of 1844 in what should be a thorough win. A. Charlton hit 417 for the Pilots, but their loss was well secured at 664. Boston clinches a playoff spot at 37-19 while Golden is at 32-21 after taking the bad end of the sweep.
There may be more action posted later today. Most of this was played last night.
