Tournament 2018 - Round 1 Day 11

Select cricket didn't get enough time today, so it will likely be done tonight instead. We'll fill the time with pool instead, beginning with...

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Leandra v. Jasmine. These two feisty veterans clash in 8-ball with the silver cue for today's first series. Freedom's Jasmine had an early three-ball run in game 1, and added a four-ball run-out on her turn after a scratch to easily top Tysini's Leandra for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Cascades' Jasmine had a weaker effort in game 2, unable to get much going after a five-ball run early on. The Hummingbirds' Leandra made it a close game by patiently building her attack, but she left the cue too close to the 8 late, and Jasmine made it to secure the series at 2-0. Jasmine and Leandra battled closely in game 3, each getting down to the 8, which Jasmine positioned herself well for to take the win and a 3-0 series sweep as she advances to the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Mitchell v. Hannah. Two young players meet in 15-ball with the blue cue. Queens' Hannah did well in game 1, countering numerous runs by Harrison's Mitchell. The ending was tight, as Hannah made the 15 on a bank to the top right on her second try to take the win and 1-0 series lead. The Flames' Hannah kept things even with the Specters' Mitchell for much of game 2, exchanging short runs mostly. Hannah broke free at the end on a five-ball run-out, using good positioning and a bank on the 15 to the bottom left to take the game and the series at 2-0. Hannah shut the door on Mitchell in game 3, as his illegal contact allowed her to take the 7 from ball-in-hand before deflecting a shot off the 8 to pot the 15 at the bottom side for the 3-0 series sweep. Hannah heads to the second round.

Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Katelynn v. Cubby. The red cue's daily debut is in 7-ball this time for a pair of returnees. Lighton's Katelynn went with an old-school shutout, making a seven-ball run from the break to keep Eastside's Cubby away from the table as she took a 1-0 series lead with the dominant showing. The Prestige's Katelynn could not match that dominance again in game 2, and it was actually a game favoring the Sharks' Cubby in possession, which led him to a win when he made the 7 after Katelynn's error. The series is tied at 1. Cubby had a bulky share of possession in game 3 as well, but it didn't work out in the end, as he missed on the 7 and Katelynn cut it in, stealing the win and a 2-1 series win to advance to the second round.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Rainmane v. Goldy. The red cue stays in play for this 12-ball series. Midland's Rainmane had a four-ball run from the break, one of those being collateral damage, but it didn't matter. Everton's Goldy gave the wild-card ball back, and Rainmane had much better positioning, taking the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Rainmane stepped in with another strong break, but cleaner as well, in game 2. The Eagles' Goldy kept pace, as the two exchanged matching three-ball runs, but Rainmane got the late push for the win, clinching the series at 2-0. Rainmane kept up a good performance in game 3, but she almost lost as Goldy pushed with a four-ball run. Rainmane managed to make two brilliant defensive plays, earning ball-in-hand to take her final ball for a 3-0 series sweep. Rainmane moves to the second round.

Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Twinkie I v. Mitchell. The rookie returns to play Rotation in a road appearance with the red cue. Pacific's Twinkie I had a decent performance in game 1, running circles around a lethargic Mitchell, as the Harrison rookie had very little to contribute. Twinkie I took the game 8-4 for a 1-0 series lead. The Specters' Mitchell did a bit better late in game 2, giving up the lead early on to the Volcanoes' Twinkie I but rallying with five balls over his last two turns to win 8-6, tying the series at 1 in the process. Twinkie I had a surprisingly easy game 3, as Mitchell hardly seemed to be in the game. Twinkie I had a couple of nice runs for an 8-0 shutout, claiming the series 2-1 to advance to the second round.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Twilight v. Bandit. A captain meets a sophomore in Accuracy with the blue cue. Central's Twilight fell behind early in game 1, but Swordpoint's Bandit let the lead go twice late, and then missed on the overtime break. Twilight converted her shot, winning 2-3 for a 1-0 series lead. The Blades' Bandit kept things even with the Warriors' Twilight for much of game 2, until Twilight faltered at the end of the game with a pair of misses. Bandit converted on both subsequent shots, winning 1-3 to tie the series at 1. Twilight took an early lead in game 3, showing quite well in this performance until she dropped into a late tie with Bandit. The visitor Bandit couldn't hold on, as Twilight's lead was renewed and she held on for a 3-5 win to take the series 2-1. Twilight is into the second round.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Puff III v. Dustin. The silver cue is back for 10-ball between former teammates. Everton's Puff III got the better of Central's Dustin late in game 1 after a shaky start on both sides. Puff III made the 10 to the top right on her second try for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Eagles' Puff III managed to get a pair of balls on the break in game 2, but it didn't mean a thing after her cluster-buster on the 2 failed. The Warriors' Dustin fired back on a double-pot, making the called 2 to the top right and the 10 in the bottom right for the win, which tied the series at 1. Puff III popped a six-ball run on her first turn, and while Dustin answered with a three-ball run on his second turn, he scratched while making the 9. Puff III took the 10 from ball-in-hand, winning the series 2-1 to get to the second round.

Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Acorn v. Cassandra. A captain hosts a returnee in 9-ball with the red cue. Game 1 went back-and-forth between the players, although Diamond's Cassandra picked up at the end, beating Lighton's Acorn with a lucky bank on the 7 to the bottom side before sending the 9 to the top left for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Gems' Cassandra had a strong appearance in game 2, with two separate three-ball runs, the latter after the Prestige's Acorn had a bad miss. Cassandra took the win in this one as well, clinching the series at 2-0. Acorn had a significantly better performance in game 3, with three-ball runs twice during the game. A lot of balls congregated around pockets, but Cassandra couldn't make it work, and Acorn's win cut her series win down to 2-1. Cassandra is set to appear in the second round.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Potter v. Jeremias. The red cue stays up for this series of 8-ball. Pronger's Potter was the first to get a grip on game 1 with a four-ball run, but Royal's Jeremias caught up and won on a three-ball run-out, good for a 1-0 lead in the series after the strong counterattack. The Tridents' Potter tried again in game 2 with another hot start, getting a four-ball run in the middle to get onto the 8. The Crowns' Jeremias answered on a three-ball run, but his defense wasn't good enough, and Potter put the 8 behind the 4 in the top right to get the win, tying the series at 1. Game 3 started a bit slowly this time, but Jeremias took off after a scratch from Potter, rallying on a seven-ball run that nearly grabbed the 8. Potter shot back with a three-ball run, but it was too little, and Jeremias struck the 8 to the top right for the win. Jeremias advances to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Snuggle v. Cowzart. A captain hosts a returnee in Rotation with the red cue. After a close start in game 1, Westside's Cowzart quickly pulled away from Oceanside's Snuggle, getting a double-pot at the end to win 9-2 as the 10 and 14 fell in the top left. Cowzart holds a 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Snuggle returned the favor in game 2, dominating thoroughly over the Rockers' Cowzart in the middle frame to take an 8-1 win. Snuggle's bold attack helped tie the series at 1, with a decisive third game awaiting. Cowzart had managed to pull ahead in a much closer game 3, but he didn't get a chance to finish it, as Snuggle surged with five balls over his last two turns to win 8-6, taking the series 2-1 to make it in the second round.

Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Katelynn v. Ms. Kitty. The penultimate series today is in Accuracy with the red cue. Lighton's Katelynn had the first and the last miss, but none in between, which all belonged to Pacific's Ms. Kitty. This led to Katelynn winning 2-3 for a 1-0 series lead after some smart strategy late in the game. The Prestige's Katelynn scratched on the break again in game 2, and the Volcanoes' Ms. Kitty was much less accommodating to that, playing perfectly throughout the game to win 0-4 and tie the series at 1. Game 3 was much sloppier for both players, especially in the middle when they exchanged pairs of misses. Katelynn prevailed at the end, taking a 4-6 win for a 2-1 series win that puts her in the second round.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Panda v. Bryant. The blue cue gets today's last series in 8-ball. Southern's Panda had a decent performance highlighted by a three-ball run at one point, which didn't quite hold off Maplewood's Bryant. Instead, Bryant scratched while making the 8 to gift the win to Panda, who owns a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 featured a more standard finish, as the Monarchs' Panda simply outpaced the Lumberjacks' Bryant and took a clear shot on the 8 to get the win that clinched the series at 2-0. Panda put himself in a deep hole against Bryant early in game 3, but he got out with a seven-ball run, and he added the 8 a turn later to complete the 3-0 series sweep. Panda is off to the second round.

No more league activity today, due to fatigue, and tomorrow's usual slate is in jeopardy as well.
