Tournament 2018 - Round 1 Day 9

We're set to return from a day off. We begin with...

Apple Center, Todavía: Anton v. Daisy. A rookie hosts a sophomore in Accuracy with the blue cue. Modernistic's Daisy held the lead for a majority of game 1, but a pair of late misses unraveled her good performance, allowing Todavía's Anton to take the win by a 2-3 score for the 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw dueling perfect performances up to the last ball, where the Union's Daisy missed and the Stills' Anton converted for a 0-1 win that clinched the series at 2-0 in an excellent battle for the series. Anton didn't get caught up in game 3 at all, battling evenly with Daisy right to the end, where the visitor missed an extra time to give Anton a 2-3 win and 3-0 series sweep. Anton is into the second round.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Shawn v. Sydney Sierota. The blue cue stays in action for a more experienced Accuracy series. Midland's Shawn had the first miss in game 1, but Harrison's Sydney didn't hold the lead for long, and a late fade gave Shawn a 1-3 win for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 did not have as clean a look to it, as both players exchanged misses late in the rack and to start overtime. The Specters' Sydney couldn't make a ball on her second overtime shot, and the Predators' Shawn took his chance, winning 4-5 to clinch the series at 2-0. Shawn held his ground despite a tough start, and Sydney buckled late, missing twice to give Shawn the 2-3 win and 3-0 series sweep. Shawn's good series gets him to the second round.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Melissa Benoist v. Peach. The Urban Derby gets a pool touch, as these rivals meet in 8-ball with the blue cue. Terrace City's Melissa had to play defense at first against North Modernistic's Peach, who had a three-ball run early. Melissa provided a five-ball run to get her offense up, and she took the win later on for a 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Melissa had a difficult game 2, but she sustained offense well early on before waiting for the Nighthawks' Peach to slip up in defense. It took awhile, but Peach faltered on the last ball, and Melissa converted on her first clear look on the 8 to secure the series at 2-0. Peach had a four-ball run on her first turn in game 3, and added more later, but she had no chance to answer an eight-ball run-out by Melissa at the end, which gave the host a 3-0 series sweep to take into the second round.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Bryant v. Twinkie II. The blue cue gets another series, this time a Northeastern Derby between experienced rivals in 10-ball. Maplewood's Bryant had a five-ball run from the break, and the dominated in the second half as well, blowing by Harrison's Twinkie II for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Lumberjacks' Bryant wasn't as strong in game 2, but it was a scratch from him that opened the door for the Specters' Twinkie II to pot the 5 from ball-in-hand before making the 6-10 combination to the bottom right for the win, tying the series at 1. Twinkie II had to be patient in a game where many shots took awhile to develop. She got her chance as Bryant scratched while making the 8, and she struck with a pair of shots from ball-in-hand for the win and 2-1 series win. Twinkie II's comeback takes her to the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Lexi v. Daisy. Two players with something to prove meet in Rotation with the silver cue. Harrison's Lexi didn't have a dominant game despite winning 8-3, but a four-ball run early on helped pace the attack, keeping Modernistic's Daisy in a chasing role. Lexi leads the series 1-0. The Union's Daisy thought she could cruise through game 2 after accruing and early lead, but the Specters' Lexi rallied to tie it, and only narrowly missed the 15 at the bottom side. Daisy got the tap-in to win 8-7, tying the series at 1 after a bit of a scare. Daisy would not make the same mistake twice, going with a three-ball run on her first turn and a four-ball run on the next. Lexi scratched after the second run, and Daisy won 8-2 from ball-in-hand, taking the series at 2-1 to get to the second round.

Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Lionel v. Josie. A tough veteran hosts a tough rookie in 7-ball with the blue cue. Commerce's Lionel didn't get anything on the break, but after an empty turn from Oceanside's Josie, Lionel exploded for a seven-ball run-out. His quick strike put him ahead 1-0 in the series. The Waves' Josie proved a quick learner, taking the lesson from game 1 and applying it in game 2 after defending against the chance of the Tradewinds' Lionel doing anything with his second turn. Josie wiped the table clear on a seven-ball run-out of her own on her second turn, tying the series at 1. Game 3 was unlike the previous two, requiring a bit more strategy, until Josie barged in with a four-ball run-out to take the series 2-1 and head off to the second round.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Shaggy v. Puff III. Teammates of each other's sister, these two veterans meet in 8-ball with the red cue. Everton's Puff III countered a three-ball run by Whitewater's Shaggy, which included one of Puff III's stripes, with a seven-ball run-out. Puff III's big response gave her a 1-0 series lead. The Eagles' Puff III didn't have a miracle run in game 2, and she had to come from behind against the Shores' Shaggy, but a three-ball run-out at the end settled the series at 2-0 for Puff III. Game 3 saw Puff III scratch on the break, allowing a five-ball run by Shaggy to develop. Shaggy had some collateral damage, and Puff III answered with another seven-ball run-out to take the win for a 3-0 series sweep to put her in the second round.

Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Rosemary v. Stinky. The red cue gets another dose of 8-ball as a rookie hosts a veteran. Commerce's Rosemary had a lackluster break, and Freedom's Stinky took advantage with a six-ball run on his second turn. He ended it a turn later with the last pair of shots, taking the win for a 1-0 series lead. Short runs were more the theme in game 2, as the Cascades' Stinky had a couple of early ones, but a three-ball run-out at the end set the rallying Rosemary apart. The Tradewinds' Rosemary tied the series at 1 with her comeback win here. Game 3 saw a mix of the first two, as Stinky had a four-ball run early answered by Rosemary on a five-ball run before things got tight. Stinky played with fire near the 8, but missed it when he had a chance. Rosemary then tried to pull back, but she left the 8 short at the top left, and Stinky tapped it in. His win made it a 2-1 series, sending him through to the second round.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Chimpy v. Jake. A returning veteran takes on a star in 10-ball with the silver cue. Modernistic's Chimpy tried a lot of things in game 1, but only his break was really good. Royal's Jake countered that at the end with a four-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Crowns' Jake didn't have a great performance in game 2, but the Union's Chimpy ran out of steam on the 7. Both players chased it for awhile, and Jake eventually corralled it, sparking a three-ball run-out for the win and 2-0 series lead. Chimpy had nothing left in the tank for game 3, allowing Jake a five-ball run two turns before a three-ball run-out that gave the visitor a 3-0 series sweep to put him in the second round.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Hoppy v. Nicole. A former Monarch visits a current one in 15-ball with the red cue. Lighton's Nicole got a lucky bounce in game 1, as Southern's Hoppy made a contact play on the 2 that set Nicole up to pot the 2 at the bottom right and send the 15 to the same pocket off a bank. The tricky play gave Nicole a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 didn't last long either, with the Prestige's Nicole hounding the 15 from the first mistake committed by the Monarchs' Hoppy. The host bought herself some time, and then got the win, jamming the 4 and 15 to the top right while taking the 6 in the bottom right to win on a triple-pot that tied the series at 1. Game 3 had no early finish or trick play opportunity, forcing the players to battle throughout the rack. Nicole had the edge late but lost it when she missed the 14. Hoppy converted the last two shots for the win, taking the series 2-1 to get to the second round.

GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Hughbert v. Neopolitan. The silver cue gets back in action in Rotation. Pearl's Neopolitan had a three-ball run early on to pace her attack, good enough to hold off Southridge's Hughbert. Neopolitan picked up the win at 8-4 after a second surge late, going ahead 1-0 in the series. The Surfers' Neopolitan took game 2 by the same 8-4 score, but she had to come from behind early on, as the Defenders' Hughbert had a better start this time. Neopolitan didn't let go of the lead once she got it, cruising through the latter half of the game to take a 2-0 series lead. Neopolitan picked up the lead in a poorly-played game 3, but Hughbert broke through on a five-ball run-out at the end, winning 8-5 to make it a 2-1 series. Neopolitan still gets the trip to the second round.

Sprint Hall, Victoria: Strawberry v. Gizmo. The final series of the day is in Rotation as well, with the blue cue this time. Eastside's Gizmo had a slow start in game 1, falling behind to Victoria's Strawberry, but he did enough defensively to tie the game on a three-ball run before winning from ball-in-hand after Strawberry scratched. Gizmo's 8-7 win put him ahead 1-0 in the series. Fortune didn't favor the Spurs' Strawberry any better in game 2, as she pulled ahead after an early deficit only to see the Sharks' Gizmo win 8-7 again on a three-ball run-out this time. Gizmo holds a 2-0 series lead. Game 3 saw Gizmo burst out to a lead again, but he couldn't hold this one, a late scratch helping set up Strawberry for a four-ball run-out to win 8-7. Gizmo took the 2-1 series to get to the second round.

That's all for today. We'll have more of this tomorrow after Select cricket games.
