2017 Qualifiers - Weekend Special #1 (Day 12)

We finally have a weekend that should go uninterrupted. As such, we'll play a large slate of games this time, beginning on Saturday with...

Nikolai of the Freedom Cascades heading group one and playing 8-ball with the blue cue. Nikolai took a ball on the break, and he was shooting well until the shots got longer, which eventually produced an error, his only one, en route to a score of 22 shots for the appearance. Next up, Pearl Surfers co-captain Neopolitan plays 10-ball with the silver cue. Neopolitan considered her game a bit disappointing, making a ball on the break and taking one error but needing 22 shots to finish the rack despite many viable shooting angles. Moving along, Pronger Tridents rookie Potter is back in action for 10-ball, using the red cue in his game. Potter needed only 15 shots after making two balls on the break, concluding a very impressive outing with no errors. Following that, Whitewater Shores captain Bear shoots 9-ball with the silver cue. Bear made a ball on the break, but he had trouble with accuracy, ending on 19 shots with one error for the game. The fifth player of the weekend finishes the first group, and that player is Golden Pilots veteran A. Charlton, who will play 9-ball with the red cue. Charlton didn't waste any time this game, making two balls on the break and the 1-9 combination on the first shot from play, giving her a score of 1 and no errors.

Leading off the second group, Starlight, the Pacific Volcanoes superstar captain, shoots Rotation with the red cue. Starlight had an excellent outing, taking a ball on the break and then just one error during the rest of the game, closing it out in 24 shots as her shooting was dominant and occasionally lucky. Continuing along, Klaus, the Atlantic Pirates rookie, is the last rookie to make his career debut, doing so by playing 7-ball with the silver cue. Klaus didn't get anything on his break, and he didn't take an error either, calmly shooting his way to a score of 13. The eighth player of the weekend is Boston Swifts veteran Gradley, who will use the silver cue to play 8-ball. Gradley took an empty break, and had two errors for scratches during a shaky game, but he closed with a solid 20 shots for the appearance. Charli XCX of the Tysini Hummingbirds gets the next game, using the red cue in Rotation. Charli appeared to have bit off more than she could handle in the game, taking five errors very quickly after her empty break. She settled in to finish the game with 32 shots, somewhat of a miracle given how late in the game she scored just the 3. Icing this group, Pacific Volcanoes veteran Leonette plays 12-ball with the blue cue. Leonette limited herself to just a late error for missed contact after going empty on the break, and this allowed her to finish the game with 20 shots in total after her errant set-up forced the error.

The third batch gets going with Oreo of the Terrace City Knights shooting 9-ball with the blue cue in her third game of the year. Oreo had nothing on the break and ended up taking two errors during the game itself, giving her a score of 17 shots when it was over in a mediocre appearance. Dominic, the new Viewpoint Sound Meteor, gets the next game as he plays 10-ball with the silver cue. Dominic went empty on his break, and added a shot for an error after an illegally potted ball, but this helped his cause, as he ended the game with 16 shots and stopped chasing the ball he illegally potted. Moving along, Wings, the Pearl Surfers veteran, plays 12-ball with the silver cue. Wings made a huge run during his game, taking a ball on the break and not stopping until he had to set up a few shots. He ended with 16 shots and no errors in a textbook example of how to play 12-ball. The fourteenth player of the day is Central Warriors captain Twilight, who plays Accuracy with the silver cue as she becomes the third player to finish qualifying. Twilight took 24 shots after an empty break in this game, going with no errors but not much to brag about for the captain. Twilight totaled 180 shots during her qualifying sessions. Rounding out the group, Web City Spiders newcomer Dani shoots Rotation with the red cue. Dani had four errors during the game after her empty break, but she needed only 26 shots to complete the outing, better than the expected score given her mistakes.

Group four starts with the last player before the short afternoon ends, and that is Mr. Snowman of the Infinity Torpedoes, shooting 12-ball with the red cue. Mr. Snowman made a ball on the break, and then took an error after a too-soft hit, but he was fine from there, ending with 16 shots in a spectacular game. The night begins with the seventeenth player of the weekend, Diamond Gems rookie Rosalina, who shoots 12-ball with the silver cue. Rosalina surprisingly went empty on her break, and then took one error at the end of the game, ending with 24 shots in the appearance. Next up, Todavía Stills star Sierra shoots Rotation with the blue cue. Sierra dazzled throughout her turn, coming up empty on the break somewhat unfairly, and then making contact on plenty of shots, erring only twice over the 30 shots she needed to complete the appearance. Following that, Westside Rockers captain Misty shoots 15-ball with the silver cue. Misty dazzled in a blaze early on, making two balls from the break, which made it a much easier road to travel as she scored 23 shots with only two errors in the game. She could have finished quicker, as she hawked the 15 relentlessly, but it was stubborn. Ending the batch, Midland Predators captain Shawn shoots 10-ball with the red cue. Shawn stayed on top of the 10 pretty well despite his empty break, and he took two errors for illegally potted balls on errant attempts, but he ended with 13 shots when he made it on the third try, a 6-10 combination to the top right.

The fifth group opens with Lighton Prestige rookie Salmo, who has the blue cue up at the table to shoot 12-ball. Salmo had a late-falling ball on the break, and he picked his shots well from there, taking no errors and setting himself up in quick time, ending with a score of 18 shots. Moving along, Cheddar of the North Modernistic Nighthawks plays 10-ball with the blue cue. Cheddar was absolutely dominant in her game, taking two balls on the break and then breezing through the rest of the rack in 10 shots, avoiding any errors quite easily as she precisely shot each ball down. Another expansion team player, Stonebridge Wolves captain Juno, gets the next game, shooting 10-ball with the silver cue. Juno straddled the average for this game, getting a ball on the break and also taking two errors after unfavorable positions were tough to deal from, and she ended with 17 shots in a reasonable performance. Up next, Swordpoint Blades star Dreamy plays 10-ball with the red cue. Dreamy also took a ball on the break, but she had an early error that disrupted her flow, and she ended up falling to 17 shots despite the hot start. Wrapping up the group, Twinkie II, the Harrison Specters captain, shoots 12-ball with the red cue. Twinkie II made a ball on her break, but two errors and a tough position on the 9 forced her to take 23 shots to end the game, a still-decent total.

Saturday's final group is the sixth of the weekend, which begins with Harrison Specters newcomer Sugar playing 12-ball with the red cue. Sugar made a ball on the break, but also erred twice in the game, needing 24 shots to fix a critical mistake in her set-up work before she finished the game. The 27th player this weekend is Westside Rockers newcomer Slinks, who will shoot 9-ball with the blue cue. Slinks failed to match the hype of her first two appearances with the team, going empty on the break and needing two errors among her 15 shots to finish the game. Moving along, North Modernistic Nighthawks rookie Luigi makes his third career appearance in 9-ball with the blue cue. Luigi had nothing on the break, and then took two errors, all while trying to tap in the 9 on a kick after getting a bad line on the shot. This futile effort eventually ran his score up to 17 shots, a sub-par outing. Following that, Klaus, the Atlantic Pirates rookie, returns to the table for 8-ball with the silver cue. Klaus had nothing on the break and one error in his appearance, needing 20 shots to clear the table, a reasonable outing. The last player for Saturday, and 2016 as a whole, is Chris of the Capital City Sharpshooters, who plays 10-ball with the red cue. Chris made nothing on the break and took 23 shots to complete the game, including one error for missed contact.

The seventh group of the weekend, and first of 2017, begins with Midland Predators rookie Fuchsia shooting 15-ball with the red cue. Fuchsia came to play in this game, going empty on the break but recording only one error over her 22 shots to complete the outing. Following that, Commerce Tradewinds sophomore Lorde shoots 12-ball with the red cue. Lorde needed 23 shots in her appearance, as her break was empty and the distribution from it led to three errors during the game for various offenses. Next up, Hannah, the Royal Crowns rookie, makes her second career appearance in 8-ball with the blue cue. Hannah needed 22 shots for this game, narrowly missing anything on the break, but she also stayed error-free in the appearance. Maplewood Lumberjacks captain Fluffina gets the next game, shooting Rotation with the red cue. Fluffina left the table furious after another bad game, taking two errors after making a ball on the break, and then having to chase the 12 around to ruin what had the chance of being a good game that ended in 32 shots. The last player in the group is the 35th to shoot this weekend. That player is North Modernistic Nighthawks rookie captain Peach, who shoots 8-ball with the red cue. Peach was nearly perfect in this appearance, making two balls on the break and then ending the game with 16 shots and no errors after a showing of very precise shots.

Batch eight gets going with Atlantic Pirates rookie Klaus shooting 9-ball with the blue cue. Klaus had his best game so far, taking the game in a simple 9 shots with no errors after making the 8 from the break in a spectacular outing. Continuing along, the 37th player of the weekend is Boston Swifts veteran Puff II, who has the silver cue up for 12-ball. Puff II drilled two balls in on the break, and then had no errors during the course of play, moving efficiently through the rack in 18 shots for a good game. Lexi of the Harrison Specters plays the next game, using the red cue to shoot 8-ball in her second appearance with the team. Lexi had a rough start and a shaky shooting stance, getting nothing on the break and taking an error in the 22 shots she was at the table for. Moving along, Boston Swifts mainstay Sweetheart uses the silver cue in her 12-ball qualifier. Sweetheart looked like a wizard, making two balls on the break and nearly a third, and then doing her set-up work early, enabling a long run. She had no errors, and after a second set-up sequence, she ended with 15 shots, top of the heap so far. Icing this group, Eastside Sharks sophomore Niki plays 10-ball with the blue cue. Niki made a ball on the break, and seemed to do fine until she had to attack the 6, which gave her problems. She ended with two errors in 17 shots for the game, still a reasonable effort, but wanting for better.

Group nine opens with Chris, the Sharpshooters captain, playing 12-ball with the blue cue in this appearance, his fifth of the season. Chris got nothing from his break, and he struggled in shooting the whole game, needing 28 shots with two errors mixed in to escape the rack. Up next, his teammate on the Sharpshooters, Sprinkles, uses the blue cue for 10-ball. Sprinkles had a disappointing game, taking nothing on the break and then spreading three errors throughout her game, which eventually ended with 19 shots in a poor showing. The 43rd shooter of the weekend is Stealth of the Swordpoint Blades, who keeps the blue cue active for 9-ball. Stealth had another early finish in this game, going empty on the break but still needing only 9 shots with no errors after he deflected the cue lightly off the 7 to pot the 9 at the bottom right. Moving along, Puff I of the Modernistic Union plays 15-ball with the silver cue. Puff I had a fairly uneventful game, taking nothing on the break (although there were many close calls), and then only one error in the game before finishing with an average 27 shots. The group ends with Bear, the Whitewater Shores captain shooting 10-ball with the blue cue. Bear made two balls on the break and still had time to take an error for a scratch in the game, ending with 12 shots in the appearance, a good mark.

The tenth group is led off by Kayla of the Royal Crowns, who plays Rotation with the silver cue. Kayla did make a ball on the break, and she had control of the game early on, until about two-thirds through. At that point, she got erratic, but finished with 29 shots and six errors, most by design. The 47th player of the weekend is Puff III of the Everton Eagles, who will use the red cue in her Rotation game. Puff III had a very good game, getting nothing on the break and accumulating five errors among just 23 shots, showing complete domination in the game. Following that, Princess, the superstar captain of the Tysini Hummingbirds, uses the silver cue in 10-ball. Princess went empty on her break, and then had one error among 19 shots for the rest of the game, a mediocre outing for the star player. Next up, Terrace City Knights star Jennifer Livilotti shoots 10-ball with the red cue. Jennifer hawked the 10 after an empty break, and avoided any errors while doing so, needing 11 shots before she deflected off the 6 to pot the 10 in the top right. Finishing the group, Nighthawks rookie Luigi plays 10-ball with the red cue. Luigi made a ball on the break, starting a dominant effort that saw him pin the 10 near the bottom left but never get a good look at a combination. He settled for an error-free 14 shots for the game, still a wonderful outing.

Bunch eleven starts with Gradley of the Boston Swifts shooting 9-ball with the red cue in his third game of the year. Gradley fell apart after making a ball on the break, collapsing to 20 shots with one error as he proved unable to lock in his shot effectively. Bryant of the Maplewood Lumberjacks gets the next game, shooting 15-ball with the silver cue after many days off. Bryant turned in another sparkling performance, taking a ball on the break and then erring on his terms, collecting five of them but also only 22 shots for the game, a remarkable output from the veteran who might be making a late star turn. Continuing along, Bells, the Todavía Stills newcomer, plays 10-ball with the blue cue. Bells had nothing on her break, and she needed 16 shots with one error to get through a fairly normal game without much in the way of oddity. The 54th player drawn to shoot this weekend is Modernistic Union draft choice Strawberry, who is set to play 8-ball with the red cue in her second appearance with the team. Strawberry showed a bit of rust after a long layoff, making a ball on the break but sputtering on her early shots. She settled in and finished with one error and 21 shots in total for the game, a decent showing. At the back of the group, Twinkie III of the Whitewater Shores plays 9-ball with the blue cue. Twinkie III had a poor outing, taking two errors after an empty break that saw one of those errors, a scratch. She needed 17 shots for the game, and didn't look confident in her shots.

The night begins with the twelfth group of the weekend, and the 56th player, who is Dreamy, the Blades veteran, shooting 12-ball with the red cue. Dreamy seemed a bit lethargic in her game, taking two balls on the break and then sputtering to 24 shots as she worked around the table, with only one error included. Next up, Oceanside Waves veteran Caitlin plays 12-ball as well with the red cue. Caitlin had a wonderful first half to her game, but that was offset by a dreadful second half. Early on, she had two balls on the break to pace herself with, but a cluster developed and proved hard to organize, leading to three errors and 24 shots. Continuing along, Twinkie I of the Lighton Prestige is set to use the silver cue in 10-ball. Twinkie I was pleased with her performance in the game, as she needed only 17 shots with nothing from the break and no errors to complete the qualifier. The 59th player of the weekend is Archtown Arrows stalwart Sleepy B., who returns the red cue to action with more 12-ball. Sleepy B. put in a decent outing for an empty break, taking only one error late on a scratch as she tried to set up a stubborn shot. She ended up with 23 shots for the game, good enough by the circumstances of the game. Closing out the group, Central Warriors superstar Dustin plays 10-ball with the blue cue. Dustin didn't quite get anything on his break, but he was very sharp in the game, taking only 10 shots as he ended on an 8-10 bank combination to the top right, and he had no errors for the game.

The thirteenth group opens with Victoria Spurs rookie Wario shooting 10-ball with the red cue. Wario has not had the best of times recently, and this game was more of the same, with an empty break and three errors causing his score to run up to 22 shots in a game lacking much authority in his shooting. Moving along, Infinity Torpedoes captain Smudge shoots 10-ball with the silver cue. Smudge had a poor game, needing 23 shots and two errors after an empty break to clear off the rack, including chasing the last four balls for much of the latter shots. Going 63rd this weekend, Union stalwart Puff I wraps up her qualifiers with the blue cue in Accuracy, the fourth player to finish. Puff I had a slow start, but she finished well, closing with 19 shots and no errors despite the empty break. For the overall session, she ended with a currently league-leading 152 shots. Following that, the Stills' Bells plays 12-ball with the red cue. Bells followed the Sunday night protocol for the event, starting well and then fading in a ball of fire, as she made a ball on the break and then had a late error and a cringe-worthy mistake en route to taking 23 shots to clear the table. The group closes with Maplewood Lumberjacks veteran Diddley playing 12-ball with the red cue as well, with the hopes of accurate finishing skill. Diddley made two balls on the break and then took a composed stance as he worked to set up his shots, eventually clearing the table in an error-free 21 shots, a good outing.

The last group of the weekend kicks off with Westside Rockers stalwart Goatee playing 10-ball with the blue cue. Goatee had nothing from the break, and she did take an error for illegal contact early on, but she did well to finish the game with 17 shots after that point. The 67th player of the weekend is the Prestige's Twinkie I, who will play 12-ball with the red cue in this appearance, her fifth of the year. Twinkie I had a ball on the break, and kept her momentum going for the whole game, as she took no errors and finished the appearance in 17 shots, a very strong outing for the veteran. Next up, Swordpoint Blades rookie Bandit plays 8-ball with the red cue in his second career appearance. Bandit showed impeccable control after going empty on a break that barely shattered at all, as he took no errors and finished the game in 17 shots, a very quick pace for the inexperienced player. Moving along, Shadow, the Web City Spiders captain shoots Rotation with the blue cue. Shadow had a dazzling performance, making a ball from the break and then taking only one error in an easily navigable rack, ending with 19 shots to top the event's leaderboard. Finally, the weekend ends with Klaus, the Atlantic Pirates rookie, shooting 10-ball with the blue cue. Klaus made a ball on the break, and then he had one error for missed contact before closing the game on 14 shots, a very good outing for the league newcomer.

We'll be back to standard coverage during the week, as we are nearly at halfway done with qualifiers for this tournament year.
