Hutton Cup Playoffs: Round 1, Game 5

Just six games for today after a couple of advancements from yesterday. We'll see if any more teams can join the two already in the quarterfinals when we're done with today's action. First up...

Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The Swifts will return to their primary jerseys to take on the Eagles in a pivotal game 5 in their series, one of four currently at a deadlock. Goldy put in a good performance despite a lack of pace for Everton, leading off the game with 488 to give the visitors a stable start. Patches couldn't correct her early struggles, ending on 147 for Boston in a poor turn from the captain. Puff III responded with 518 for the Eagles on her turn, doing well to extend their lead. Puff II picked up 456 for the Swifts on her turn, causing their deficit to grow a bit more at the halfway mark. Kirstin suffered an unfortunate deflection with 336 for Everton, potentially weakening their lead a bit. Gradley couldn't capitalize on the chance for Boston, falling at 253 as the deficit stays steady. Blizzard put an emphatic finish in for the Eagles with 948, the stunning rally icing their score at 2290. Sweetheart had a respectable 415 for the Swifts, but they lost with 1266 overall. Everton has pulled into a 3-2 series lead before heading home with a chance to advance.

Amazon Field, Golden: The Pilots have a chance to gain a series lead with this home game, facing a Surfers side struggling with consistency. Watermelon carved out a huge effort for Pearl with 845 on the opening turn, establishing the visitors with the great showing. Valencia got a good portion of the damage back with 640 for Golden, keeping things competitive early on. Neopolitan made a deft touch on her backhand to keep her turn going for the Surfers, eventually stopping at 591 to pad the lead. Dusty made a significant dent in the deficit for the Pilots with 768, making it close at the midway point. Boots tried to hold up to draw a false start, but a deflected ball bounced off her bat to make the turn official, which ended in her taking only 16 for Pearl. Strut did not ease up for Golden at any point, going hard to the finish as he scored 736 to gain a significant lead. Wings attacked with strong pace, taking 492 for the Surfers, but they lost with 1944 in the end. A. Charlton knocked another 464 for the Pilots at the end to give them 2608 overall in the win. Golden holds a 3-2 series lead, following a hot-and-cold pattern so far in the playoffs.

Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: The Warriors have a chance to advance here, facing the Stills in a must-win scenario for the visitors. Todavía got off to a fairly standard start with 438 from their captain Easter to get things going this time. Twilight countered with a much bigger performance for Central, blasting 951 to give them the initial lead with much confidence. Sierra replied with 736 for the Stills on her turn, enough to cover the deficit for now. Dustin got most of it back with 716 for the Warriors, doing very well to keep them in the lead halfway through the game. Sparkles stumbled a bit with 319 for Todavía on this turn, hurting their comeback chances. Mario provided a bit more padding for Central with 504 on his turn, helping strengthen their chances of moving on. Bells came up short despite a solid 419 for the Stills, and they lost with 1912 to end their season. Gizmo capped the Warriors win with 404 on his turn, giving them 2575 total. Central moves along with a 4-1 series win, heading into the quarterfinals.

BMW RockDome, Westside: Neither team looked great yesterday, but the Flames continue to fight for their lives against the Rockers on the road this time. Crystal's ill-timed scoring slump persisted with an unfortunate deflection that ended her turn at just 72 for Queens this time. Misty misplayed a low-rolling ball for Westside, the error downing her at a poor 128 to create a slow start in the game. Paige covered the minor deficit with a sorry 122 for the Flames as scoring continues to elude both sides. Goatee did better than everyone else combined this far when she slapped 727 to give the Rockers a relatively large lead. Violetta likely sealed Queens' fate with 138 on her turn, a return to poor form making their comeback that much tougher. Midnight didn't put the game out of reach with her 196 for Westside, but their lead looks good enough to last. Max's Flames career closed on a low note, a bad swing-and-miss sealing their loss as he added a pathetic 39 to make a final score of 371. Slinks had 313 for the Rockers at the end, a formality as they won handily with 1364. Westside advances to face the Swordpoint Blades after this 4-1 series win.

HP Field, Midland: The Predators are back where they started after a rough pair of road games, which allowed the Tridents to gain some momentum heading into this pivotal battle. Precious gathered a strong 585 for Pronger at the start of this game, attacking with pace and strong swings. Shawn got beat by a deflection for Midland, only able to pick up a weak 72 on his turn. Zach had higher hopes than a measly 28 for the Tridents, but an awkward upward deflection ended his turn prematurely. Rainmane gained some of it back with 304 for the Predators, but they remain behind at the halfway mark. Spot provided a solid boost with 439 for Pronger, extending their lead with the performance. Leonardo made a bit of a dent in the deficit, drilling 543 to pull Midland a bit closer before the final players' turns. Potter didn't secure the game by any means with 368 for the Tridents, leaving them at 1420 overall. Fuchsia tried another comeback for the Predators, but her 492 this time was just a bit short as they closed with 1411 in the loss. Pronger's won three straight now, this close win giving them a 3-2 series lead.

Verizon Field, Pacific: The Volcanoes are back home wearing their third jerseys, hoping for a similar result to last game against the Torpedoes. Smudge has seen better opening turns than the one she just did, with 292 for Infinity representing an acceptable start. Starlight shot back with a much stronger 632 for Pacific, putting them ahead initially with a strong performance. Solaris covered the deficit with 648 for the Torpedoes, showing his bat skills with a three-touch double-hit that he converted with ease. Ms. Kitty fought it off with 902 for the Volcanoes, the big showing doing well to pad the hosts' lead. Whiskers got beat on a deflection with a measly 48 for Infinity, the poor turn damaging their hopes of a comeback. Leonette didn't let up for Pacific, keeping their attack strong with her 504 to add to the lead. Mr. Snowman couldn't do anything about the fast-paced deflection that took him out at 391 for the Torpedoes, giving them a losing final score of 1379. Chicky Phil kept it simple with 330 for the Volcanoes, capping their win at 2368. Pacific now leads the series 3-2 after an early scare.

That's all for today. Tomorrow, four series head back to the lower-ranked team's home for game 6, and if they aren't settled, the better team gets one last crack in game 7 as the round will come to a close.
