Hutton Cup Playoffs: Round 1, Games 6 and 7

We're back with the last game day of the first round, after which a major UPCL announcement is expected to be released. Any series not settled in game 6 will go on at the other venue for a decisive game 7. We begin with...

Nissan Infinity Stadium, Infinity: The Torpedoes once had a lead in this series, but they'll fight for their lives at home against a resurgent Volcanoes team. Starlight accidentally pulled a ball into her stumps to end her turn at 736 for Pacific, a strong start from the star captain. Smudge kept things close with 654 for Infinity in a stern response, leading to an interesting rest of the game. Ms. Kitty had a lack of pace for the Volcanoes at times, but she played resiliently to earn 516 in the second attack. Solaris charged back with a stronger 739 for the Torpedoes, edging them ahead at the halfway mark. Leonette managed to cover the deficit with 320 for Pacific, but they aren't in a position of strength. Whiskers had 288 for Infinity, better than her recent efforts but still representing a weaker lead late in the game. Chicky Phil went for pace over placement and ended abruptly at 301 when the latter failed him, giving the Volcanoes 1873 total in the close game. Mr. Snowman tucked in with 346 for the Torpedoes to give them 2027 overall in the win. Infinity's sturdy performance earns them one more battle with the series tied at 3 and a trip west planned for later in the day.

Chevrolet Field, Everton: This critical game is a battle of strengths, as the road-strong Swifts fight to stay alive against a home-favoring Eagles team. Patches served up a solid 370 for Boston on the opening turn, far from her game-changing performances early in the series. Goldy answered with 544 for Everton to give them the initial lead, sending their crowd into a slight frenzy. Puff II had to accept 395 for the Swifts after a technical error, for fear of scoring lower had she replayed the turn. Puff III went with pace to keep the Eagles in control of the game, slicing 568 to extend their lead a bit more. Gradley managed to cover the deficit, pummeling 677 for Boston to keep the game alive against a fierce opponent. Kirstin basically wiped out that damage on her own with 643 for Everton, keeping them ahead as the final players come to bat. Sweetheart poked 234 for the Swifts, but their title defense comes to a close at 1676, a loss that will cost them the series. Blizzard lined 542 more for the Eagles to emphatically cap their win at 2297. Everton takes the series 4-2, showing impressive recovery from their long swoon during the season as they'll next face the Whitewater Shores.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: The Surfers look to stay alive against a Pilots team due for a bad game given their pattern in the playoffs so far. Valencia didn't give Golden much confidence to break the cycle, hitting only 184 on the opening turn. Watermelon did better for Pearl, churning out 441 to give the hosts the initial lead in a solid performance here. Dusty did well to get the Pilots back in the game, slapping 409 to cover the deficit but not by a significant amount. Neopolitan provided a stronger counterattack for the Surfers with 570, boosting their lead halfway through the game. Strut remained highly persistent with 743 for Golden, covering the deficit once again as the visitors chase the game. Boots made a bit of a misstep on her turn, ending with 229 as she failed to spike a ball after letting it slip behind her, erasing Pearl's lead. A. Charlton went at a modest pace with 273 for the Pilots, ending their scoring at 1609. Wings got tangled up at the end for the Surfers, ending just short at 359, with the team losing on 1599 overall in a heartbreaking exit from the playoffs. Golden takes the series 4-2, and will await the winner of one of the two remaining series as their next opponent.

Henry Ford Memorial Stadium, Pronger: The Tridents have won three in a row to erase an early deficit in the series, leaving the Predators to travel away from home with their playoff lives on the line. Shawn had no troubles scoring in this appearance, rallying for 615 right off the bat this time. Precious had a jittery turn for Pronger, the result being a weak 260 that has them behind early on. Rainmane covered that damage effectively, her pacey turn ending early at 295 for the Predators. Zach got the Tridents back into the mix with 504 on his turn, cutting into the deficit at the midway point. Leonardo had a rough outing for Midland, picking up only 224 as the visitors' lead weakens. Spot couldn't fully capitalize on the opportunity, gathering 291 for Pronger to make marginal progress with a player each to go. Fuchsia set a high bar for the Predators with 539 on her turn, padding their score to its final form of 1673. Potter couldn't keep up with 409 for the Tridents, giving them a losing score of 1464. The series will make one more return to the Southeast, tied at 3 after this Midland win.

Verizon Field, Pacific: The first of two game 7s is ready to be played, with the regular season's Volcanoes battling the Torpedoes in a surprisingly tense finale to their tight series. Smudge had terrible timing for a bad game, a deflection doing her in at 57 for Infinity for a slow start. Starlight scattered a solid 397 for Pacific on her team's first turn, giving them the early lead. Solaris didn't come particularly close to matching the effort, taking only 178 for the Torpedoes in a weak turn. Ms. Kitty only made a small gain to the lead with 208 for the Volcanoes, this second game in a day showing wear for both teams. Whiskers couldn't make an impact for Infinity this time, producing just 128 to leave them at a deficit. Leonette had the most convincing turn of the game with 480 for Pacific, outscoring all of the opponents' offense thus far. Mr. Snowman had just 135 for the Torpedoes, who proved to be duds once again as they lost with 498 to begin their offseason of questions. Chicky Phil tapped just 144 for the Volcanoes to ice their win at 1229. Pacific gets away with less than their best to take the series 4-3, setting up a Sisterhood Derby against the Central Warriors.

HP Field, Midland: The Predators meet the Tridents one more time in their back-and-forth series, with the winner being determined by this one game. Precious had an unfortunate deflection cut her turn off quickly at 75 for Pronger, a nightmarish start for the visitors. Shawn took full advantage of the opportunity for Midland, smashing 894 to give them a sturdy lead after the first turns. Zach couldn't do much to help the Tridents on his turn, falling at 177 to make the deficit worse. Rainmane chipped another 331 for the Predators, extending their lead slightly at the midway point. Spot made a deeper cut for Pronger with 656, trying to pull them back into the game out of desperation. Leonardo didn't make a strong contribution for Midland with 304, just padding the lead lightly instead. Potter wilted at the wrong time for the Tridents, taking just 168 to seal their loss at 1076. Fuchsia made it a simple win with 112 for the Predators to give them a final score of 1641. Midland took the series 4-3, and will face their Southlands rivals, the Golden Pilots, in the quarterfinals.

That's all for the games today. We'll be back on Monday with the Quarterfinals. In the meantime, the players of the round will be announced on Twitter shortly, as well as the future of UPCL Cricket.
