The playoffs are here for UPCL Cricket, as 16 teams begin to battle it out for the Hutton Cup. Today, each of the first eight series has an opening game. We begin with...
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The #2 seed Swifts open their playoff campaign against a road-weary Eagles time that could be a dark horse despite a long swoon in the middle of the year. Everton got off to a decent start with 507 from Goldy, who started slow but picked up the pace toward the end of her turn. Patches shot back with a better performance for Boston, chipping in with 807 to put them ahead. Puff III had no response for the Eagles, taking a measly 29 after getting tangled up early in her turn. Puff II had diminished returns for the Swifts, but her 370 added a bit more strength to their lead at the halfway mark. Kirstin got beat by a deflection, the bouncing swing taking her out at 208 as Everton remains behind. Gradley ripped another 803 for Boston on his turn, padding their lead greatly. Blizzard tried to make a rally with 688 for the Eagles, but they fell short in a loss with 1432. Sweetheart kept the tone sharp for the Swifts, racking up another 832 to ice their win at 2812 overall. Boston nearly doubled up on Everton as the hosts take a 1-0 series lead here.
Amazon Field, Golden: The #3 ranked Pilots are playing in the second game today, hosting the Surfers. Watermelon didn't get as much as she wanted out of the opening turn this time, contributing 241 initially for Pearl in a fairly mediocre start. Valencia answered with a stronger performance for Golden, scattering 623 to put the hosts ahead after the first turns. Neopolitan didn't get any traction for the Surfers, taking a paltry 99 as the deficit grows deeper against the visitors. Dusty provided another 583 for the Pilots on the second attack, showing a bit of what made her the MVP this year. Boots tried to pull Pearl back into the game with 496, but that didn't do much against the steep deficit. Strut crushed 1024 in response for Golden, the massive appearance boosting their lead once again. Wings attacked well with 650 for the Surfers at the end, but it was too little and too late to save them from losing with 1486. A. Charlton took 281 for the Pilots to cap their winning final score at 2511 after a convincing performance. Golden holds a 1-0 series lead with the big win.
Verizon Field, Pacific: The regular season champions take on a surprisingly effective Torpedoes team in the Volcanoes' playoff debut for the year. Smudge started with a good pace for Infinity, but a late fade and a rapid exit at 331 gave the visitors little to work with long-term. Starlight answered with 578 for Pacific, chipping the hosts ahead with the effortless outing. Solaris tried to stay compact with his swings, but a couple of bounces pulled him out of his comfort zone before dropping him at 264 for the Torpedoes. Ms. Kitty fired back with force for the Volcanoes, tallying 697 to extend their lead at the halfway mark. Whiskers made quite the counterattack for Infinity in an attempt to close the deficit, coming close with 607 to make things interesting. Leonette answered with only 289 for Pacific, allowing their lead to weaken with a player each to go. Mr. Snowman made a wrong choice to let a ball bounce behind his bat, and his turn ended at 41 for the Torpedoes, giving them a final of 1243. Chicky Phil tapped just 162 at the end for the Volcanoes, capping their winning score at 1726. Pacific didn't make it pretty to get to a 1-0 series lead.
BMW RockDome, Westside. The end of the first half of games today is here, with the #5 Rockers hosting the #12 Flames for their first game of the playoffs. Crystal got Queens going in great form with 690 on her opening turn, sending a stern message to the hosts. Misty kept things close for Westside, replying with a calm 640 to mitigate the early damage. Paige had a strong pace going but her placement proved shaky for the Flames, and she crashed out at 292 to weaken their lead. Goatee replied with 903 for the Rockers, a massive performance to lift them ahead at the midway point. Violetta had a ball just clip the boundary to knock her out of the game at 51 for Queens. Midnight didn't look at her best for Westside, but she didn't have to be, giving them 336 to pad their lead. A rough deflection sealed the loss for the Flames, as Max got taken down at 80 points to give them 1113 total. Slinks made a quick exit at 78 for the Rockers, sealing their win at 1957 with the meager effort. Westside looked like the better team as they grab a 1-0 series lead.
Samsung Whitewater Stadium, Whitewater: The Shores are back in the playoffs, taking on Urban Division rivals in a gritty first round series that starts here. Kiwi wasted on time in getting Terrace City a good chunk of offense, churning out 515 on the opening turn for the visitors. Bear couldn't cover the deficit, with some distractions helping to keep him down at 380 for Whitewater. Jennifer slugged 1033 for the Knights in response, giving their lead much more strength after the second attack. Twinkie III countered with 769 for the Shores, helping to offset a large part of the damage. Oreo flicked a decent 338 for Terrace City on her turn, but the lead has weakened for the visitors. Marsell went on a blitz attack for Whitewater, carving out 934 to give the hosts a lead as the final players come to bat. Stripes wasted the effort for the Knights with 98 on her turn, leaving them at a loss with 1984. Shaggy added 355 for the Shores at the end of the game, sealing their win at 2438. Whitewater's comeback win gives them a 1-0 series lead in dramatic form.
Blades Fusion ProGlide Park, Swordpoint: After coasting into the end of the season, the schedule tightens for the Blades as they open the playoffs against the early-finishing Pirates. Delila put in a good challenge for Atlantic with 633 on the opening turn, forcing the hosts to engage quickly. Snowball couldn't meet the challenge for Swordpoint, falling at 375 in an acceptable opener. Isabella lost control of her swing late in her turn for the Pirates, tallying a middling 304 in the appearance. Dreamy made a deep cut into the deficit with 632 for the Blades, making it a much closer game at the halfway mark. Americus didn't make a convincing case for Atlantic to lead any longer, falling with a pathetic 36 after a failed backhand. Bandit nearly made a mess of his turn before recovering to post 354 for Swordpoint, giving their lead a boost. Klaus couldn't create enough for the Pirates, bowing out at 220 as they lose with a total of 1193. Stealth didn't have a strong finish with 264, but enough to ice the Blades' win at 1625. Swordpoint holds a 1-0 series lead.
HP Field, Midland: The only expansion side to make the playoffs starts now, as the Predators take on the quickly-rebuilt Tridents. Precious poked 383 for Pronger to lead things off, getting a bit lucky as she pulled off a nice backhand earlier in the appearance to keep going. Shawn melted early with 207 for Midland, unable to keep himself on track well enough. Zach saw a ball glance off his backswing and into the boundary to end his turn at a disappointing 144 for the Tridents, destabilizing their lead. Rainmane cut away part of the deficit for the Predators with her 264, but they are still slightly behind in the low-scoring game. Spot had a more convincing 490 for Pronger on his turn, doing well to give the visitors a stronger lead at a pivotal point of the game. Leonardo had 392 for Midland, losing only a bit of ground before the final players come to bat. Potter contributed another 416 for the Tridents near the end of the game, setting their final score at 1433. Fuchsia made an epic comeback with 572 for the Predators, stealing the win away as they close at 1435. Midland's thriller gives them a shaky but unchallenged 1-0 series lead.
Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: Today's action ends with the 8/9 game 1, as the Warriors hope the home field advantage they took on a tiebreaker will help them top the Stills. Easter showed up well for Todavía at the start, grabbing 476 to establish their offense immediately. Twilight was even better in a great counterattack of 759 for Central, giving the hosts the initial advantage. Sierra didn't let up at all for the Stills, cracking 537 to cover the deficit and keep the hosts on edge. Dustin made a successful counterattack with 551 to protect the lead for the Warriors midway through the game. Sparkles accidentally tipped a ball off the knob of her bat, ending her turn at 67 as it flew out of bounds for Todavía. Mario answered with a modest 272 for Central, giving them a bit more substance to the lead late in the game. Bells did well with 536 to force the hosts to respond as the Stills close at 1616 this time. Gizmo chipped 128 for the Warriors at the end, enough to give them the win with 1710. Central has a 1-0 series lead now.
That's all for a home-dominated day 1 of the playoffs. We'll be back on Monday for the next batch of games.
