We're back for a new week of games, with each day projecting to be a standard set. We begin today with...
Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Pauline v. Sleepy B. The blue cue will lead things off in 9-ball for today's games. Archtown's Sleepy B. seemed to get a grip on game 1 first with a three-ball run, but Capital City's Pauline struck late with a three-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Arrows' Sleepy B. got herself back into the conversation in game 2 as the Sharpshooters' Pauline struggled. Sleepy B. made the 3-4-9 combination to the bottom right for the win, adding the 7 at the top right to make it a double-pot as she tied the series at 1. Pauline put it all together in game 3, holding her own against an aggressive start by Sleepy B. before breaking out on a five-ball run-out to take the win and the 2-1 series win. Pauline will host the Queens Flames' Hannah in the second round.
GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Hughbert v. Panda. The blue cue remains in action for 12-ball now. Southridge's Hughbert had a good game 1, making a three-ball run a turn after giving away a wild-card ball to Southern's Panda to negate the visitor's advantage. Hughbert then patiently positioned himself before finishing the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Monarchs' Panda shot back confidently in game 2, working around the Defenders' Hughbert quickly at the start of the game. Hughbert couldn't position himself fast enough, and a miscue allowed Panda to finish the game with a shot from ball-in-hand, tying the series at 1. Panda seemed to have the edge early in game 3, but offsetting scratches slowed him down. It came down to each players' last two balls, and Hughbert managed to sink his faster for the win, taking the series 2-1 as well. Hughbert will host the Viewpoint Sound Meteors' Dani in round two.
Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Nicole v. Ms. Puppy. The silver cue steps in for its first series today, playing Accuracy. Lighton's Nicole started alright in game 1, but a pair of quick misses on successive shots allowing Modernistic's Ms. Puppy to take a lead. Ms. Puppy missed one herself, but held on to win 1-2, taking a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 was more of the same, as the Union's Ms. Puppy made a ball on the break and missed only once near the middle of the game. The Prestige's Nicole didn't enjoy that miss, following up with a miss of her own to create another 1-2 score that gave Ms. Puppy the series at 2-0. Game 3 saw sloppier play on both sides. Ms. Puppy trailed for most of regulation until Nicole had to bust a cluster, which dropped her back into a tie. Overtime started well, but Nicole missed her second shot, and Ms. Puppy won 3-4 to take the series in a 3-0 sweep and earn the visiting spot against the Eastside Sharks' Cubby in the second round. Nicole carries three bids in the second round.
Kraft Forum, Royal: Jeremias v. Bear. The silver cue remains in play for the next series, with 7-ball as the event. Royal's Jeremias had a slow start in game 1, going empty on the break, but he made a three-ball run and a pair of shots at the end to counter a pair from Whitewater's Bear. Jeremias holds a 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Bear had a lot more possession in a choppy game 2, running circles around the Crowns' Jeremias. Bear's only mistake was leaving the 7 at the top right, where Jeremias tapped it in, sniping the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Bear avoided suffering the sweep in an even slower game 3 performance, riddled with errors by both himself and Jeremias. Bear picked up the last two shots on his final turn to win, but Jeremias advances with a 2-1 series win, and he will host another series against Stonebridge Wolves sophomore Cobalt.
HP Field Events Center, Midland: Fuchsia v. Marsell. The blue cue takes its turn in 7-ball now. Whitewater's Marsell took a three-ball run over the middle of game 1, but Midland's Fuchsia countered with a pair of shots to take the win quickly for a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Fuchsia made a solid attempt on offense in game 2, getting a little bit early on, but she never had a chance to reply to a four-ball run-out by the Shores' Marsell. This burst from the visitor Marsell tied the series at 1. Fuchsia didn't have many clear shots in game 3, getting a couple in the middle, but this led Marsell to a slickly executed three-ball run-out. Marsell's wise shooting gave him a 2-1 series win, and he will visit Southridge Defenders sophomore Bianca for a second round series.
Home Depot Forum, Web City: Shadow v. Kiwi. The Orange-and-Black derby crosses with a captains' battle in Rotation, using the silver cue. Web City's Shadow built up a big lead over two turns before Terrace City's Kiwi made a counterattack to nearly tie it. Shadow eventually won with a three-ball run-out by an 8-4 score, going ahead 1-0 in the series. Game 2 saw the Spiders' Shadow leave the Knights' Kiwi in an impossible position on the first turn, and then Shadow used the ball-in-hand reward to create a magnificent eight-ball run-out for the 8-0 win. Shadow's flurry clinched the series at 2-0, and the home crowd erupted in pandemonium in support of their captain. Shadow couldn't recreate either of his previous efforts in game 3, as Kiwi held the lead early, and then took it a second time after Shadow scratched and didn't let go. Kiwi's 8-3 win cut the series win down to 2-1 for Shadow, who will host Pearl Surfers co-captain Neopolitan in the second round.
Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Sprinkles v. Sage. The blue cue wraps up its 12-ball obligations for the first round in this series. Capital City's Sprinkles couldn't get much going early on, but she had a moment of clarity later on. Unfortunately, she didn't execute well in that moment, and Victoria's Sage took her last ball after a lot of hard work for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Sage scratched on the break in game 2, but the Sharpshooters' Sprinkles couldn't turn that into an advantage, failing to find positioning throughout the game. Sage had the advantage late, with the 3 on the edge of bottom right, and a hard shot on the 6 at the top left led to the no-contact double-pot for the win. Sage clinched the series at 2-0. Sage completed the sweep in game 3, her complex break leading to a wild-card ball for Sprinkles. This didn't matter, as Sprinkles couldn't get into good positioning again, and Sage beat her on even terms at the end with a pair of easy shots to the left corners. Sage took the 3-0 sweep, an upset by any description, and will visit Stonebridge Wolves sophomore Cobalt in the second round.
Chevrolet Center, Everton: Puff III v. Sierra. Club-mates clash in Rotation as the silver cue comes back to the table in the Northeast. TodavĂa's Sierra had a strong early three-ball run in game 1, only to see Everton's Puff III bounce back pretty easily. Sierra kept the host down for good with a three-ball run-out to win 8-3 later in the game, giving Sierra a 1-0 series lead. While not in the dominant fashion of her father two series ago, the Stills' Sierra took game 2 by an 8-0 score. The main highlight was a five-ball run on her third turn that put the Eagles' Puff III into a panic. Sierra would slowly close the game after this, securing the series at 2-0. Puff III did better at the start of game 3, even getting close to a win at one point, but Sierra had a relentless counterattack to take the lead and then an 8-6 win for the 3-0 series sweep. Sierra will visit the Modernistic Union's Daisy in the second round, one of four bids she'll see another series for.
Toyota Arena, Freedom: Stinky v. Hoppy. The silver cue remains in action after a short break, returning for more 7-ball. Southern's Hoppy was the first to find her shot a bit in game 1, but after two successful deflections, she accidentally and illegally kicked the 7 to the bottom right to gift a win and 1-0 series lead to Freedom's Stinky. Unplanned bounces again played a role in game 2, with the Cascades' Stinky seeing almost all of them go against him. The Monarchs' Hoppy missed the 7 on her first try, but Stinky did as well, and Hoppy unintentionally banked the 7 to the top right to win, tying the series at 1. Stinky had a bit better possession in game 3, as Hoppy faltered off her recent choppy pace. Stinky would pick up a pair of balls at the end for the win and 2-1 series win, and he'll host the Eastside Sharks' Salmo in an Eastern Hills rivalry in the second round.
Audi Hall, Terrace City: Kiwi v. Wario. The blue cue now gets a turn in 7-ball between a captain and a sophomore. Both players went empty on their first turns in game 1, but Terrace City's Kiwi took a four-ball run-out for the win, with a 3-7 combination to the bottom right putting her up 1-0 over Victoria's Wario. The Spurs' Wario seemed to figure out his struggles early in game 2 with a three-ball run, but neither player could make a move after that. It took a scratch by Wario for the Knights' Kiwi to pick up the last two shots for the win, clinching the series at 2-0 in her favor. Wario had a four-ball run in game 3, giving him the possession edge, but he missed his bank on the 5 at the bottom side. Kiwi kicked it in, and then cut the 7 to the bottom right to win, taking the series in a 3-0 sweep as she earns the opportunity to host the Southridge Defenders' Hughbert in the second round.
Cisco Arena, Tysini: Leandra v. Puff II. Perennial second fiddles meet in 9-ball with the blue cue. Pairs of shots exchanged early on in game 1 gave way to an awkward finish, as Boston's Puff II got caught on a stick violation. Tysini's Leandra missed her first try on the 9, but Puff II also missed at tap-in range, and Leandra eventually won for a soft 1-0 series lead. The Swifts' Puff II did better on a clean three-ball run in game 2, but the Hummingbirds' Leandra had an answer for that as well, making the 5 before double-potting the 9 to the top right, deflected off the 6 which ended up in the bottom side. Leandra's fancy finish gave her the series at 2-0. Puff II had a three-ball run and a late pair of shots to her credit in game 3, good enough for the possession edge, but Leandra took the game anyway with a crisp cut on the 9 to the top right. Leandra's 3-0 series sweep puts her into the second round against the Royal Crowns' Kayla.
Home Depot Forum, Web City: Ted v. Wings. A Northeastern Derby match concludes the day as the silver cue returns one more time for 8-ball. Web City's Ted seemed strong in game 1, with a four-ball run and a three-ball run on consecutive turns, but his collateral damage on the latter paved the way for Central's Wings to pick up the win on a five-ball run-out. Wings leads the series 1-0. The Warriors' Wings didn't have the paciest play in game 2, but his short runs worked well. The Spiders' Ted had to play catch-up for most of the game, and he couldn't do anything late. Wings won with a three-ball run-out sparked by a lucky bounce on the 2 to the bottom left, helping the visitor secure the series at 2-0. Wings had some good offense early in game 3, trying for the sweep, but Ted denied him late with a five-ball run-out, a critical intervention to avoid the sweep. Wings still advances on a 2-1 series win, and will visit the Freedom Cascades' Stripes in the second round, one of three bids of his that will play on.
We're done for today, with tomorrow expected to follow a similar pattern.
