Tournament 2018 - Round 1 Day 45

We're set to go on another standard day of adventures in pool. First up...

Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Ms. Kitty v. Nibbles. A longtime veteran meets a sophomore in 8-ball with the silver cue to lead off today. Pacific's Ms. Kitty had a firm grasp on game 1 from the start, and while she wasn't perfect at shooting, Viewpoint Sound's Nibbles had many more missed shots. Ms. Kitty coasted to the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Ms. Kitty pulled off a strong game 2, making a four-ball run from the break and a four-ball run-out on her third turn to sandwich a three-ball run from the Meteors' Nibbles. Ms. Kitty's win here clinched the series at 2-0. Nibbles had a better start in game 3, keeping Ms. Kitty under pressure for most of the game, but the host weaseled out of it with a pair of nice cuts before potting the 8 to cap the 3-0 series sweep on a three-ball run-out. Ms. Kitty will host a club-mate in the second round, bringing in Maplewood Lumberjacks star Whiskers. Nibbles will have three bids in the second round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Celestia v. Jeremias. A hyped sophomore meets a returning player in Accuracy using the blue cue. Oceanside's Celestia had two balls on the break, which likely proved to be her undoing in game 1. Royal's Jeremias missed early, but Celestia fell into a tie late, and missed on the overtime break, allowing Jeremias to win 1-2 for a 1-0 series lead. The Crowns' Jeremias made the same mistake of double-potting on the break in game 2, but he compounded it with a scratch. The Waves' Celestia briefly fell into a tie with him, but Jeremias floundered late in the game, and Celestia walked away with a clean 1-4 win to tie the series at 1. Celestia made an adjustment and kept the advantage in game 3, which helped her when the game went to overtime. Jeremias went empty on the overtime break, and Celestia converted a shot to win 3-4 to take the series 2-1. Celestia will host the Freedom Cascades' Roxy in the second round. Celestia has six bids to play in the second round.

McDonald's Hall, Atlantic: Steven v. Shawn. The blue cue remains in action for a series of 7-ball between club-mates. Midland's Shawn struck first with a deflected shot off the 1 to take the 7-4 combination at the bottom right. Atlantic's Steven then made a three-ball run, but Shawn took the win on a three-ball run-out in response to go ahead 1-0 in the series. The Predators' Shawn made a ball on the break of game 2, but he didn't get another turn after missing the 1. The Pirates' Steven poked the 1 in, and then converted a 2-7 combination to the bottom right for the win, tying the series at 1. Game 3 followed a similar pattern to game 1, except Shawn's first turn ended on a scratch this time. Shawn played with fire on his three-ball run-out, but kept it clean for the win and the 2-1 series win. Shawn will visit the North Modernistic Nighthawks' B. Chapman in the second round. Steven still has five bids to play in the second round.

Ebay Center, Queens: Crystal v. Shadow. A massive captains' battle gets underway as the red cue comes on for Accuracy. Web City's Shadow and Queens' Crystal each exchanged the advantage of last shot once with scratches, and Shadow would take the 2-3 win when Crystal couldn't bank the last ball in. Shadow leads the series 1-0. The Spiders' Shadow had a couple of missteps early in game 2, and that would be enough to keep him down the entire time, as the Flames' Crystal didn't miss at all until late. Crystal would walk away with a 2-3 win, tying the series at 1. Crystal put so much value on obtaining the last shot advantage in game 3 that she did an early scratch, but Shadow wouldn't be suckered into keeping the score even. Shadow went unchallenged in the 1-4 win, clinching the series at 2-1 to advance to the second round, where a road series at Atlantic pits him against the Pirates' Delila.

Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Leonette v. Caitlin Woode. The silver cue wraps up its 9-ball for the round in this series. Southridge's Caitlin put up a couple pairs of shots in game 1, doing her best to keep Pacific's Leonette from making much offense. The latter pair saw Caitlin put down the 4-9 combination to the top left for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Defenders' Caitlin made a pair of shots on the break in game 2, but also scratched. This led to the Volcanoes' Leonette seeing more of the offense, but she couldn't make contact on the 6, and Caitlin took a three-ball run-out at the end for the win and 2-0 series lead. Caitlin had a lot of the offense early in game 3, but Leonette held on just long enough to take the win on a four-ball run-out, making it a 2-1 series win that puts Caitlin through. Caitlin will visit the North Modernistic Nighthawks sophomore Luigi in the second round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Sugar v. Stephanie Livilotti. The red cue is back as the style returns to Accuracy. Web City's Sugar made a ball on the break in game 1, which helped her hold off Southridge's Stephanie later on. Stephanie did pull off a triple-pot to accelerate the game and force Sugar backward, but in overtime, Sugar converted after Stephanie had an empty break. Sugar won 2-3, and holds a 1-0 series lead. The Defenders' Stephanie had a much uglier game 2 performance, missing a run of shots in the middle that allowed the Spiders' Sugar to ease up and still win 3-7 to clinch the series at 2-0. Sugar and Stephanie combined for an ugly and chaotic start, and Sugar just barely held on at times, managing to win 2-4 over Stephanie, whose slump from cricket is spilling over now. Sugar took the series in a 3-0 sweep, and will host the Oceanside Waves rookie Josie in the second round.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Twilight v. Precious. The silver cue will return to action, playing 10-ball between captains. Pronger's Precious had a better share of the offense in game 1, but when she potted the 10, the cue drifted into the top left for a scratch. Central's Twilight poached the win with a shot from ball-in-hand to go up 1-0 in the series. The Tridents' Precious made up for her mistakes from the previous game with a cleaner finish in game 2, beating the Warriors' Twilight with a four-ball run-out. Precious' crisp finish tied the series at 1. Twilight finally found her offense in game 3, with a three-ball run and a four-ball run-out on her last two turns, pinning Precious late to take the series 2-1 with the win. Twilight will host the Eastside Sharks star Chelsea in the second round.

Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Niki v. Leonette. The blue cue clears another bracket, ending its 7-ball for the round. Pacific's Leonette started with a four-ball run in game 1, and had another pair, but none of it mattered after a long chase on the 7. Commerce's Niki capitalized on Leonette's frustration, burying the 7 to the top side to steal the win. Niki leads the series 1-0. The Volcanoes' Leonette continued to dominate possession in game 2, as the Tradewinds' Niki couldn't make a single shot in the game. Leonette started on a three-ball run, and won by making the 7 on her second try, tying the series at 1 despite her massive possession share. Niki again struggled to gain possession, but Leonette was far from good. Still, Leonette eventually broke her slump with a five-ball run. Niki made a ball, but soon scratched, and Leonette took the 7 to the top left to claim the series at 2-1. Leonette will visit a Coastal rival in Oceanside Waves rookie Josie in the second round. Niki has only two bids in the second round.

Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Sprinkles v. Kodiak. The blue cue will get another series, this time playing 9-ball. Modernistic's Kodiak showed off a bit in game 1, making a five-ball run-out after playing poorly on his first turn. Capital City's Sprinkles didn't have the right grip to succeed, and Kodiak won on a 7-9 combination to the top right to give himself a 1-0 series lead. The Union's Kodiak again dug up a big run in game 2, but his four-ball streak hit a snag when he scratched while potting the 9, gifting the win away to the Sharpshooters' Sprinkles, which tied the series at 1. Neither player had gotten a firm grasp on game 3 early on, which made Sprinkles' 3-9 combination to the top right all the more surprising. Sprinkles took the series 2-1 with that shot, advancing to host the Westside Rockers' Cowzart in the second round.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Avril Lavigne v. Sweetheart. A rookie meets a veteran as the silver cue finishes off its Rotation for the first round. Southern's Avril started on a three-ball run in game 1, immediately putting Boston's Sweetheart behind. Sweetheart found a late three-ball run, but Avril double-potted the 12 and 15 to the bottom right to win 9-5 for a 1-0 series lead. The Monarchs' Avril started similarly in game 2, but the Swifts' Sweetheart stayed much closer this time. A chippy style helped Sweetheart get by, eventually taking a late lead and winning with a pair of shots from ball-in-hand for the 8-6 result to tie the series at 1. Sweetheart remained persistent despite falling behind early in game 3 against Avril. Sweetheart's work paid off with a five-ball run to gain the lead, and she would take the 8-4 win for the 2-1 series win that will see her visit North Modernistic Nighthawks rookie Gal in the second round.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Gal Gadot v. A. Charlton. The red cue steps in for 15-ball in this series. North Modernistic's Gal had the early success in game 1, making quite a few shots to establish herself, but Golden's Charlton roared back with a seven-ball run-out, including a double-pot of the 9 and 13 to the right corners, to get the win. Charlton leads the series 1-0. Game 2 saw a much slower pace of play, but it quickly got interesting. The Pilots' Charlton left the 2 near the top left, and the Nighthawks' Gal used that to set up a 3-15-4 combination to the top right, with such force that the 15 also fell for the win. Gal's brilliant shot tied the series at 1. Gal kept her shooting creative in game 3, winning the 2-1 series over Charlton with a weaving triple-pot. Gal first hit the 7, which careened to pot the 9 at the top side, while the cue deflected off it and the 13, drilling the 15 to the top right and sending the 13 to tap the 14 at the bottom right. Gal will host the Viewpoint Sound Meteors captain Mams in the second round.

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Leandra v. Leonette. Today's final series featured similarly-named veterans battling in Rotation with the blue cue. Tysini's Leandra didn't have the best start to game 1, watching as Pacific's Leonette jumped out to a lead, but late scratches doomed Leonette. Leandra swooped in to make three balls from two separate ball-in-hand plays, winning 8-6 for a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Leandra used a two-phase approach in game 2, starting with a quick offense and then switching to patient defense, stymieing any attempts by the Volcanoes' Leonette to break out on a counterattack. The result saw Leandra win 8-1, clinching the series at 2-0. Leonette put in quite the performance in game 3 to avoid the sweep, taking a large share of possession as she won 8-3 over Leandra. The series still went to Leandra at 2-1, and she will host the Queens Flames' Violetta in the second round. Leonette will play three bids in the second round.

That's all for today's games. We plan on getting a little extra Elite done tomorrow, which won't interfere with Tournament play.
