After an unexpected break, Tournament play is back and will be the primary point of interest for the summer in UPCL. We begin a standard day with...
Nissan Hall, Infinity: Mr. Snowman v. Hoot. The red cue gets things going in 10-ball today between two veterans. Viewpoint Sound's Hoot had a productive start in game 1, and then found a three-ball run-out with a 7-10 combination to the top side, using ball-in-hand after a foul by Infinity's Mr. Snowman. Hoot leads the series 1-0. The Meteors' Hoot had a spectacular effort in game 2, smashing in a five-ball run from the break and then taking two more shots on his second turn after the Torpedoes' Mr. Snowman couldn't do anything. Hoot's finale was a 7-10 combination to the top right, clinching the series for him at 2-0. Hoot slacked a bit at the start of game 3, but Mr. Snowman didn't do enough on offense to take advantage. Hoot stormed to the win with a four-ball run and a clean shot on the 10 at the end, giving him a 3-0 series sweep. Hoot will act as the visitor in his own arena, meeting Meteors teammate Dani in the third round.
Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Katharine McPhee v. Fluffina. The blue cue will begin the post-lunch session with 12-ball. Whitewater's Katharine made a solid on the break in game 1, and then used better positioning to hold off Infinity's Fluffina late in the game. Fluffina, thoroughly frustrated, illegally potted a ball, and Katharine made her last shot on the next turn for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Katharine took two solids and a stripe on the game 2 break, turning in a four-ball run and then making the last two shots she needed over three turns. The Torpedoes' Fluffina had a three-ball run to try to catch up, but Katharine stood tall in the win, sealing the series at 2-0. Katharine had some dangerous moments in attack in game 3, but her illegally potted ball allowed Fluffina to make the last two shots for the win. Katharine won the series 2-1, and will host a third round series.
GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Debby Ryan v. Ms. Kitty. The blue cue stays in action in this 10-ball series. Pacific's Ms. Kitty had a positive finish with a six-ball run-out after Southridge's Debby saw a failed jump shot punctuate her stuttering start on offense in game 1. Ms. Kitty's big run gave her a win and 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Ms. Kitty didn't produce a massive attack in game 2, but she spread offense out throughout the game, and won with a three-ball run-out after the Defenders' Debby failed to do anything with an 8-9 kick combination attempt. Ms. Kitty's win secured the series for her at 2-0. Ms. Kitty took a step back on offense in game 3, controlling less of the game and scratching as she made the 9. Debby used a three-ball run and a straight shot from ball-in-hand on the 10 to get the win, while Ms. Kitty advances to a visiting position in the third round on a 2-1 series win.
Cisco Arena, Tysini: Leandra v. Violetta. Two strong players clash in Rotation, also using the blue cue. Queens' Violetta tore Tysini's Leandra apart in game 1, attacking with a six-ball run and preventing Leandra from making a counterattack. Violetta won two turns later by an 8-1 score for a 1-0 lead in the series. The Flames' Violetta had a shorter five-ball run in game 2, and it took a bit more for her to grab an 8-3 win at the end, but Violetta did enough once again to hold off the Hummingbirds' Leandra. Violetta clinched advancement at 2-0 in the series. Violetta started game on a three-ball run, and then added short runs a couple more times during the game to beat Leandra once again by an 8-3 score. Violetta swept the series 3-0, and will visit the Westside Rockers' Slinks in a third round series.
HP Field Events Center, Midland: Rainmane v. Taylor Swift. Big stars clash in 8-ball as the red cue takes another series. Midland's Rainmane didn't get anything on the break, but struck after Commerce's Taylor made just a single ball. Rainmane technically made ten balls over eight shots, using two of Taylor's stripes as collateral to pot the 8 for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Rainmane didn't use all of her offense at once in game 2, spreading it out in a much closer battle with the Tradewinds' Taylor. Rainmane made the 8 left-handed to the bottom left on her second try for the win, sealing the series at 2-0. Rainmane had flashes of good play in game 3, but she couldn't string much together. Taylor picked up a four-ball run and then made the 8 on the next turn, winning the game but dropping the series 2-1. Rainmane will host the Royal Crowns' Jeremias in the third round.
IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Cheddar v. Ms. Kitty. We'll split the day's games over two calendar days, ending the first half with 15-ball and the blue cue. Pacific's Ms. Kitty seemed to have more of the offense in game 1, pushing back North Modernistic's Cheddar and earning the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Ms. Kitty took almost no time at all to win game 2, taking the 1-15 combination to the top right on her second turn, easily dispatching the Nighthawks' Cheddar with a 2-0 series lead. Game 3 lacked the same quick attack, although Ms. Kitty did find a four-ball run near the middle of the game. Cheddar replied on a three-ball run, but it didn't do her any good, as Ms. Kitty eventually made the 15 to earn a 3-0 series sweep. Ms. Kitty will play on into the third round.
Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Acorn v. Sparkles. Play resumes with the blue cue shooting 12-ball. Both players had an abysmal game 1 performance. Golden's Sparkles had a brief moment of good play, but Lighton's Acorn found enough shots at the end of the game to take the win for a shaky 1-0 series lead. The Pilots' Sparkles started better in game 2, but she again ran out of shots quickly, and the Prestige's Acorn found a four-ball run to take control. Acorn would take his time on his last ball, edging it behind Sparkles' defensive effort to get another win to clinch the series at 2-0. Sparkles kept up her positive improvement in game 3, making a four-ball run to pressure Acorn, who had a pair of shots in response before a tough miss at the bottom side. Sparkles quickly made her last two shots for the win, giving Acorn a 2-1 series win in the end. Acorn will host the Central Warriors' Mario in the third round.
FedEx Arena, Eastside: Gizmo v. Shadow. Two players in the midst of good years tangle in 9-ball with the blue cue. Eastside's Gizmo started out with a pair of early shots in game 1, but after the players struggled for awhile, Web City's Shadow won with a four-ball run-out. Shadow got the win on a two-rail bank of the 9 to the bottom side, a second plan after missing the top left, to give him a 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Shadow rattled out a lot of shots early in game 2, letting the Sharks' Gizmo pick up some early offense, but Shadow rallied back after Gizmo missed contact on the 7. Shadow made a three-ball run-out, earning another win to seal the series at 2-0. Shadow had an early three-ball run in game 3, but he couldn't get anymore, sticking a miss in between a pair of three-ball runs that helped Gizmo get a win. Shadow took the series 2-1, and will host the Golden Pilots' Sparkles in the third round.
Audi Hall, Terrace City: Quincy v. Twinkie II. The blue cue ends its obligations for the day in Accuracy. Terrace City's Quincy had a bad game 1 end-to-end, scratching on the break and missing a bunch of shots late. Harrison's Twinkie II had very good fortunes, winning 0-6 with at least three lucky deflections keeping her perfect as she took a 1-0 series lead. The Specters' Twinkie II didn't stay perfect for long in game 2, missing an early shot, but the Knights' Quincy fell behind later on. Twinkie II couldn't hold this lead, but she forced Quincy into a scratch on his last shot. Twinkie II claimed the 2-3 win this time, securing the series at 2-0. Twinkie II declined again in game 3, unable to hold even with Quincy in the later stages. Quincy gave Twinkie II a tough shot at the end, and she failed, losing 2-4 this time. Twinkie II did win the series 2-1, and she'll visit a fellow captain, the Capital City Sharpshooters' Chris, in the third round.
Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Lionel v. Steven. Strong shooting opponents clash in 8-ball with the silver cue. Atlantic's Steven paced his game 1 attack with a six-ball run on his second turn. Commerce's Lionel fired back with a four-ball run as he tried to make a comeback, but Steven tapped the 8 to the top side to get the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Lionel paced game 2 early on with a five-ball run, getting onto his last ball but finding himself unable to make it at the top right. The Pirates' Steven combined defense with an offense of a three-ball run and a four-ball run-out from ball-in-hand to take another win, sealing the series at 2-0 with the comeback. Lionel and Steven managed to play pretty evenly throughout game 3, as both players established defense along the right corners at various times. Lionel found it a little easier to break through at the end, getting the win to avoid a sweep. Steven took the series 2-1, and will travel to Pacific to face the Volcanoes' Ms. Kitty in the third round. Lionel is the sixth player out of the Tournament, with Steven recording his first kill of the year.
Sprint Hall, Victoria: Sage v. Spot. The host begins a personal home doubleheader in 9-ball with the red cue. Pronger's Spot struck with a three-ball run-out after a contested start to game 1, beating Victoria's Sage with a 6-9 combination to the bottom right. Spot's smart play gave him a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Sage did a much better job of protecting the target ball in game 2, keeping the Tridents' Spot from making a big finishing run. Spot never got a chance at the 9, as Sage made the 8 and banked the 9 to the top left for the win, tying the series at 1. Sage had a three-ball run early in game 3, but Spot pushed the 9 near to the top right, and then kicked the 6 to the bottom side before making his 7-9 combination at the top right for the win. Spot took the series 2-1, and will visit a fellow sophomore, the Atlantic Pirates' Isabella, in round three.
Sprint Hall, Victoria: Sage v. Mario. The silver cue ends the split-day's games in 7-ball between a rookie and a sophomore. Victoria's Sage made the 5 in the bottom right on the game 1 break, but she failed to convert a 1-7 combination to the top left. Central's Mario did make that shot on his first and only turn, taking the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Mario had a four-ball run early in game 2, but he couldn't finish off the 7 when it came to that. The Spurs' Sage gladly took the win, tapping the 7 to the top left for her only successful shot as she tied the series at 1. Sage started well in game 3, but faded a bit in the middle, giving Mario a chance to make a couple of shots. Both players went slowly at the end, until Sage struck the 7 to the top right for the win and a 2-1 series win. Sage will host the Freedom Cascades' Stinky in the third round.
That'll be it for a couple of days at a minimum. We're having some issues with maintaining the arena, causing the unexpected cancellations this week, and the issues may persist into next week.
