Tournament 2018 - Round 2 Day 23

We're finally set to return with more Tournament action, with ten days left in the second round. We begin with...

Google Hall, Modernistic: Daisy v. Chelsea. A sophomore welcomes a veteran in 8-ball with the silver cue to start today's action. Modernistic's Daisy used a four-ball rally to get onto the 8 after a slow start in game 1, and then took the win after Eastside's Chelsea couldn't make the 8. Daisy tapped it to the top left to go up 1-0 in the series. The Union's Daisy broke out on a seven-ball run in game 2, but she never got a clear look at the 8 near the top left. An error gave the Sharks' Chelsea ball-in-hand, and the visitor assembled a five-ball run, but illegally double-potted the 8 with the 3 at the end to gift the win and 2-0 series to Daisy. Daisy continued to pace play in game 3, making things look easy as she potted a three-ball run from the break. Daisy's approach on the 8 needed some work, but Chelsea couldn't catch up before Daisy put the 8 in the top left for the win and 3-0 series sweep. Daisy will host a third round series.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Snuggle v. Jasmine. Today's second series is also in 8-ball with the silver cue, with the added benefit of a captains' battle. Oceanside's Snuggle opened up early in game 1, but staggered short runs kept the lead in flux. Snuggle missed the 8 at the end on a long-range shot to the top right, giving Freedom's Jasmine a clear shot that she made for the 1-0 series lead with her win. The Cascades' Jasmine left no doubt to her quality in game 2, with a four-ball run from the break and a three-ball run on her second turn. The Waves' Snuggle tried to make a comeback, but left Jasmine snookered in a defensive play. Jasmine casually used masse to beat Snuggle's 1, and then just brushed the 8 into the bottom right for the win and 2-0 series lead. Snuggle looked better in game 3, outpacing Jasmine to the 8 and then making it cleanly on his second attempt to get the win. This made it a 2-1 series win for Jasmine, who will play on into the third round.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Cleo v. Dewey. The red cue takes a look now in Rotation between two strong players. Everton's Cleo battled very closely with Oceanside's Dewey in game 1, with the lead exchanged multiple times early on. Cleo pulled away when Dewey had a scratch, and she managed to hold on for an 8-6 win and 1-0 series lead at the end. The Waves' Dewey didn't sit back in game 2 at all, erupting for a six-ball run to stake out a massive early lead. The Eagles' Cleo couldn't gather herself after that, and Dewey eventually made another pair of shots to get the 8-1 win, tying the series at 1 win apiece. Cleo got herself together again in game 3, weathering a three-ball run from Dewey at the start before poking a go-ahead run later. They battled for a bit in the middle, and Cleo eventually pulled away with an 8-4 win to secure the series at 2-1. Cleo will play in the third round.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Quincy v. Steven. The red cue stays in play for 9-ball after the lunch break. Terrace City's Quincy stuck a five-ball run in the middle of an otherwise poor game 1 on both sides. Atlantic's Steven had chances late in the game to counter, but he missed all of his late shots, and Quincy took the last two balls for a win and a 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Quincy stepped up his game in a smoother game 2, fighting off some early success by the Pirates' Steven with a four-ball run-out of his own. Quincy's late push secured the series in his favor at 2-0. Steven had his best performance in game 3, a four-ball run helping him to a majority of possession, but he faded late and Quincy made the 9 to get the win for a 3-0 series sweep. Quincy hosts the Viewpoint Sound Meteors' Dani in round three.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Spot v. Paps. The blue cue makes its debut for the day in 7-ball between a sophomore and a veteran facing his old team. Pronger's Spot had the better of play in game 1, but his scratch after making the 6 allowed Tysini's Paps to strike the 7 to the bottom side from ball-in-hand for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Paps made sure that scratch would sting for the Tridents' Spot, as Paps used the game 2 break to put the 7 in the top side for another win. This clinched the series for Paps at 2-0, all off of a mistake by Spot. Paps continued to pin Spot in, using fantastic defense and a bit of luck at the end to get another win. Paps swept the series 3-0, and will visit the Todavía Stills star Sierra in the third round.

Ebay Center, Queens: Kyle v. Hannah. Flames teammates collide in the red cue's last 8-ball series of the round. In game 1, Kyle fell flat, nearly getting shut out after a scratch. Hannah couldn't kick the 8 into the bottom left that time, but she made it on her next turn, a previous four-ball run paving her way to the win and 1-0 series lead. Kyle seemed to have more control in game 2, but as he got down to his final ball, Hannah launched a comeback, passing him at the end to get onto and make the 8 first for another win. Hannah clinched the series at 2-0 against her teammate. Hannah played well in game 3, pushing the game toward the finish, but her miss on the 8 allowed Kyle to make a pair of shots for the win. Hannah stills advances to the third round on a 2-1 series win, and she'll visit the Todavía Stills rookie Anton in that series.

Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Pauline v. Hannah. The visitor ends another bracket's round in 9-ball with the blue cue. Capital City's Pauline made three balls on the break in game 1, and then used ball-in-hand after a scratch by Queens' Hannah to make a three-ball run-out at the end. Pauline leads the series 1-0 with the quick win. The Sharpshooters' Pauline scratched on the break in game 2, and the Flames' Hannah replied with a five-ball run, but Pauline didn't stay down, making a three-ball run-out on her second turn for the win to seal the series at 2-0. Hannah continued to push the offense in game 3 as much as she could, but Pauline would not step back, making a three-ball run-out at the end of this game as well to earn a 3-0 sweep. Pauline will host the Modernistic Union's Chimpy in the third round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Shadow v. Neopolitan. Another captains' battle today sees Rotation played with the silver cue. Pearl's Neopolitan made two distinct attacks, using the 1 as a bruiser early in game 1, and then finishing with a short run to counter a tying attack from Web City's Shadow late in the game. Neopolitan won 8-5 to take a 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Shadow had a four-ball run to establish a good lead in game 2 in the middle, but the Surfers' Neopolitan charged back with a pair of shots and then a luck-filled three-ball run-out to steal away an 8-7 win, sealing the series at 2-0. Neopolitan stormed out to a nice lead in game 3 before things slowed down. Shadow showed some frustration, and Neopolitan kept her luck up with a pair of ridiculous shots to take an 8-2 win for a 3-0 sweep. Neopolitan hosts a Coastal rival in the third round, welcoming the Viewpoint Sound Meteors' Vincent.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Sweetheart v. Rudolph. A great veteran meets a rookie for 8-ball with the blue cue. Harrison's Rudolph played well on the road in game 1, working an early four-ball run and holding off a weak counterattack from Boston's Sweetheart. Rudolph picked up the win with a pair of shots at the end, good for a 1-0 series lead. The Swifts' Sweetheart tried to make the 7 from the kitchen in game 2, but she bumped the 14 to the top side, and the 7 knocked the 8 there right after that, gifting the win and the 2-0 series lead to the Specters' Rudolph. Sweetheart refused to be swept in game 3, pummeling a seven-ball run to put immediate pressure on Rudolph. Sweetheart then poked the 8 to the bottom right after Rudolph's run wasn't enough to stop her. Rudolph did take the series 2-1, and he'll return to Harrison as the visitor against his Specters teammate Lexi in the third round.

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Roxy v. Cheddar. Long-time veterans clash in 9-ball with the red cue in this series. Freedom's Roxy had a five-ball run from the break in game 1, setting the tone pretty well, but she couldn't finish a straight shot from medium-range on the 9. North Modernistic's Cheddar took it instead, earning a 1-0 series lead on a tap-in win. The Nighthawks' Cheddar looked far more comfortable in game 2, while the Cascades' Roxy appeared to have lost all confidence in her shot. Cheddar eventually picked up the win in a tougher game than the first, clinching the series at 2-0. Roxy pulled herself together enough at the end of a quick game 3 to pot the 9 on a short run after Cheddar's offense fell off. Cheddar still took the series 2-1, and will be the visitor in her third round series.

Sprint Hall, Victoria: Wario v. Solaris. A pair of sophomore battle it out in 9-ball with the silver cue. Infinity's Solaris had a pair of shots on his first turn, and then added a three-ball run-out at the end to win game 1 despite a strong four-ball run from Victoria's Wario. Solaris leads the series 1-0 with the quick win. The Torpedoes' Solaris saw a number of shots drift well into the bottom side, pacing him in an eight-ball run that ultimately meant nothing. The Spurs' Wario took game 2 after Solaris couldn't make the 9, sending it to the top right easily for a cheap win to tie the series at 1. Solaris had a decent start in game 3, but he couldn't get the 8 to fall in the bottom side near the end of the game. Wario tapped it in, and then did the same for the 9 at the top side to take the win for a 2-1 series lead. Wario will visit the Southern Monarchs' Dominic in round three.

Intel Center, Diamond: Rosalina v. Quincy. The blue cue closes out this segment of games in 8-ball. Terrace City's Quincy needed a couple of turns before he could untangle game 1, but once he got going, he rallied to beat Diamond's Rosalina on a seven-ball run-out for the 1-0 series lead. The Gems' Rosalina looked much more confident in game 2, making a few short runs to get onto the 8 fairly early. The Knights' Quincy refused to go quietly, answering with short runs of his own and winning on a three-ball run-out after Rosalina couldn't bury the 8 on three tries. Quincy's comeback clinched the series for him at 2-0. Rosalina showed a bit more intent on her finish in game 3, striking the 8 to the bottom right after more short runs defined her offense. Quincy had no answer for this, but he will take the series 2-1, and he'll travel again in his third round series.

That's it for this day of games. More Tournament 2018 coverage can be found on Twitter @UnitedPCL.
