Tournament 2019 - Round 1 Day 5

The final day of the first week of the Tournament is here, beginning with...

McDonald's Hall, Atlantic: Delila v. Avril. The blue cue is ready to start the day's action in 10-ball. Atlantic's Delila had a clear edge in possession, ending game 1 with a four-ball run-out after dominating the previous turns to take a 1-0 series lead over Web City's Avril. The Spiders' Avril did better to get involved in game 2, attacking well and then using a scratch by the Pirates' Delila to spark a three-ball run-out. Avril's successful play helped her get a win to tie the series at 1. Game 3 saw play even out a bit, with neither player able to grab a decisive run. Delila picked up the scraps in the end, earning the win on a pair of shots for a 2-1 series win. Delila is set to play in the second round.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Twinkie III v. Violetta. Two highly dangerous players meet in 15-ball with the red cue. Whitewater's Twinkie III went back and forth in small bursts with Queens' Violetta during game 1. Twinkie III prevailed by cutting the 12-15 combination to the top right for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Twinkie III had more of the offense in game 2, but the Flames' Violetta kept an eye on the 15 and struck on a 10-14 combination to the bottom left that bumped the 15 there on the follow through. Violetta's win tied the series at 1. Twinkie III seemed to play well early on, but Violetta made four of the last five balls over two turns to get the win. Violetta won the series 2-1 and will face Kitty of the Midland Predators in the second round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Ted v. Delila. A rematch between teams from the first series of the day goes in 8-ball with the red cue. Atlantic's Delila looked to have game 1 in her hands until a scratch allowed Web City's Ted to spark a rally. Ted didn't stop there, pulling ahead and winning for the 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Ted opened game 2 on a five-ball run from the break, which the Pirates' Delila matched with a five-ball run of her own and strong positioning. It didn't look easy, but Ted poked a three-ball run-out to earn the win, clinching the series at 2-0. Delila stormed back in game 3, barely allowing Ted any shots at all as she avoided the sweep with a win. Ted takes a 2-1 series win with him to a second round match with Eastside Sharks captain Graham.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Twinkie II v. Steven. The silver cue finally returns for a 13-ball series. Atlantic's Steven had a positive start in game 1, but Harrison's Twinkie II tracked back with good defense and held Steven off long enough to swipe the win. Twinkie II is up 1-0 in the series. The Specters' Twinkie II took the lead right from the break in game 2, and while the Pirates' Steven made a valiant effort to come back, Twinkie II closed the win with the 8 in the bottom side to seal the series at 2-0. Twinkie II continued to have a dominant offense in game 3, laying back a bit at the end of the match as Steven rallied, but not enough to let him win. Twinkie II closed the series in a 3-0 sweep, and she will face Cassie of the Royal Crowns in round two.

Intel Center, Diamond: Katelynn v. Marsell. The Bloodbath Derby is renewed in 9-ball with the silver cue. Whitewater's Marsell had a clear majority of the possession in game 1, including an early four-ball run, but he missed on the 9. Diamond's Katelynn made him pay, tapping it in for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Gems' Katelynn paced the early attack in game 2, and she did so slowly, getting stunned by a four-ball run-out from the Shores' Marsell. Katelynn's troubles with the 6 led Marsell to the finishing run, which tied the series at 1. Game 3 went all bad on the 4, as neither player had the patience to cut it to the bottom left. Katelynn eventually broke the lull, and she got the 9 on a deflection after missing the 6, taking the win in crafty style to win the series 2-1. Katelynn will visit Golden Pilots captain Valencia in the second round.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Melissa v. Bandit. The silver cue goes again for 12-ball between less-experienced players. Terrace City's Melissa started with a pair on the break and looked dangerous throughout, but Swordpoint's Bandit showed skill to get back in the game. Bandit beat Melissa at the bottom side for a win and 1-0 series lead. The Blades' Bandit delivered an early three-ball run in game 2, only for the Knights' Melissa to answer with a four-ball run. Melissa then gave up a wild-card ball, and Bandit struck from there for his last two shots and the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Bandit showed a little more quality in game 3, giving Melissa a wild-card ball and then overcoming it with four balls over his last two turns to earn the win for a 3-0 sweep. Bandit's sweep punched his ticket to the second round.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Oreo v. Paps. A venue doubleheader sees the blue cue up for 7-ball in the second series. Terrace City's Oreo made a couple of balls on the break, but Tysini's Paps got the win with four balls over his last two turns after a scratch by Oreo. Paps leads the series 1-0. Game 2 followed a similar sloppy pattern, to a greater extent this time, as the Hummingbirds' Paps missed a relatively easy shot on the 7. The Knights' Oreo cashed in from here, tapping the 7 to the bottom right for the win, which tied the series at 1. Oreo had a three-ball run in game 3, but she choked twice late, and Paps got a second chance on the 7 that he wouldn't waste. Paps' win gave him the 2-1 series win, and he'll be facing Maplewood Lumberjacks captain Diddley in the second round.

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Vincent v. Nikolai. A sophomore meets a tough veteran in 7-ball, this time with the red cue. Tysini's Vincent made a three-ball run from the break and added single shots later in game 1 to defeat a much less precise Nikolai of Freedom. Vincent is up 1-0 in the series. The Hummingbirds' Vincent made a pair on the break to start a four-ball run, but he didn't get back to the table, as the Cascades' Nikolai fired off a three-ball run-out on the counterattack to get the win, tying the series at 1. Nikolai went for a cheap finish in game 3, but missed, leading to a chorus of boos. Vincent, rattled by Nikolai's brazenness, never really recovered. Nikolai would later win cleanly with a four-ball run-out for the 2-1 series win, which angered the home fans even more. Nikolai will meet Central Warriors rookie Andrew in the second round.

Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Dusty v. Smokey. The silver cue returns for a 15-ball series between experienced foes. Offense didn't come easy in game 1, with plenty of struggles before Diamond's Smokey made a four-ball run in the middle. He then added a five-ball run-out to defeat Golden's Dusty for the 1-0 series lead. The offense was more evenly spread in game 2, as both players made good pushes. The Gems' Smokey had a chance late after the Pilots' Dusty missed on the 15, but Smokey missed as well, and Dusty made it on the second try to tie the series at 1 with her win. Dusty saved her offense for just the right moment in game 3, letting Smokey tire himself out early before Dusty swooped in on a five-ball run-out for the win. Dusty's 2-1 series win sends her to a round two series against Midland Predators' third-year Fuchsia.

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Jasmine v. Precious. Captains go to battle for Eastern Hills teams in 13-ball with the blue cue. Pronger's Precious started the offense in game 1, but Freedom's Jasmine stormed back on a four-ball run. They both missed on the 8 before Jasmine put it in the bottom right for the win and 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw the Cascades' Jasmine make a pair on the break, but she had bad positioning, while the Tridents' Precious had no trouble making a bunch of shots. Precious eventually put the 8 in the top left for the win to tie the series at 1. Precious again got the better of Jasmine in game 3, sneaking ahead late and taking the 8 to the bottom right while Jasmine tried to sort through bad positioning again. Precious' 2-1 series win sends her into the second round.

T-Mobile Center, Victoria: Spice v. Sydney C. The blue cue stays up for Accuracy between a captain and a rookie. Victoria's Spice got a ball on the break but couldn't hold a lead. Modernistic's Sydney C. also blew a lead late in regulation, causing overtime. Sydney C. made two on the overtime break, and Spice went empty on her shot, giving Sydney C. the 3-4 win for a 1-0 series lead. The Union's Sydney C. had a couple of leads in game 2, but she couldn't make them stand after a spate of mid-game misses. The Spurs' Spice gladly picked up the win by a 2-4 score to tie the series at 1. Spice had the lead for much of game 3, although she briefly fell into a tie at the end before Sydney C. missed on the last ball. Spice took the win 2-3 and the series 2-1, earning a spot in round two.

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Melissa v. Bright. More Accuracy is up next with the red cue in play this time. Game 1 started out close, but Terrace City's Melissa soon dropped behind while Pearl's Bright barely budged at all. Bright won the game 1-4 and owns a 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Melissa held a lead for awhile in game 2, but the Surfers' Bright continued to play well despite taking the first miss. Melissa had two late misses, paving the way for Bright to win 1-3 to secure the series at 2-0. Bright wasn't as clean with his performance in game 3, missing twice before finally gaining the upper hand as Melissa struggled at the finish again. Bright won 2-4 for a 3-0 sweep, which sends him to a Coastal rival in the second round, facing the Oceanside Waves' Jason V.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Twinkie II v. Bandit. Two players making their second appearances today meet in 7-ball with the red cue. Harrison's Twinkie II had a lot of the early offense in game 1, but Swordpoint's Bandit made a two-rail kick at the top side, potting the 7 for a win and a 1-0 series lead. The Blades' Bandit carried the offense in game 2, with a three-ball run in the middle and the mop-up shot on the 7 after the Specters' Twinkie II missed her cut attempt to the top left. Bandit's win secured the series for him at 2-0. Twinkie II would not come up empty in the series, scoring a four-ball run-out in game 3 to take a game from Bandit. The visitor Bandit won the series 2-1 and will take on the Queens Flames' Violetta in the second round.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Twilight v. Dewey. The silver cue will wrap up the day with an Accuracy series. Central's Twilight made quick work of Oceanside's Dewey in game 1, as the visitor couldn't get a handle on his shots. Twilight won 1-5 for the 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Twilight had few issues in game 2, missing a couple of times to erase her advantage after the Waves' Dewey started slow. Dewey then quickly missed near the end, and Twilight locked up a 2-3 win to clinch the series at 2-0. Twilight wasn't happy to miss twice in rapid succession in game 3, but Dewey gladly held on from there with a 1-2 win to avoid getting swept. Twilight's 2-1 series win pits her against the Golden Pilots' Dusty in the second round for a Generations Derby match.

Pool will return on Monday, while Premier cricket takes the spotlight for the weekend, mostly on Sunday.
