We're back with a late start for the new day of Tournament play. First up...
Google Hall, Modernistic: Kodiak v. Citrus. The silver cue leads off the day in 9-ball. Lighton's Citrus had a three-ball run in game 1, but Modernistic's Kodiak took the win on a pair of shots, following up on a 6-9 combination to the top right for an extra tap to earn the 1-0 series lead. The Union's Kodiak tried to push again late in game 2, with a three-ball run to get onto the 9, but he missed and the Prestige's Citrus cleaned it up to the top left for a victory of her own that tied the series at 1. Citrus did what was required to seal the series at 2-1, executing a brilliant six-ball run-out in game 3 to stun Kodiak and the home crowd. Citrus will advance to the second round.
Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Wings v. Taylor S. The silver cue remains in play for 8-ball. Central's Wings started well in game 1, but faded toward the end just as Commerce's Taylor S. rallied. Taylor S. took the win on a three-ball run-out for a 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Wings didn't lie back at all, rallying with a fierce five-ball run to put the pressure on the Tradewinds' Taylor S. When she didn't respond with offense, Wings banked in his last solid and the 8 for the win, tying the series at 1. Wings had a steady offense throughout game 3, while Taylor S. saved all of hers for a six-ball run. This created some pressure at the end, although Taylor S. made the 8 after both players missed on it once. Taylor S. won the series 2-1 and will face the Tysini Hummingbirds' Paps in the second round.
Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Dominic v. Quincy. The red cue takes a turn in 8-ball between vastly different players. Game 1 was played at a frenetic pace, with Terrace City's Quincy making a six-ball run, Southern's Dominic replying with a seven-ball run, and Quincy then bopping in the last two shots for the win and 1-0 series lead on just his second turn. The Monarchs' Dominic continued the pacey offense in game 2, making a five-ball run on his second turn. It ended in disaster, as he double-potted the 11 to the top right and 14 to the bottom side, but also clipped the 8 behind the 14, causing him to gift the win and the 2-0 series to the Knights' Quincy. Dominic finally got his win in game 3, making a four-ball run before missing on the 8. Quincy attacked with a three-ball run, but left Dominic in a good spot to tap the 8 to the top side for the victory. Quincy settles for a 2-1 win to get himself into the second round.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Daisy v. Beth. The silver cue is back again for this 7-ball series. Modernistic's Daisy watched as Pearl's Beth struck first in game 1, then answered with a six-ball run-out for the win. Daisy leads the series 1-0. Such a run didn't come to the Union's Daisy in game 2, but the Surfers' Beth filled the offensive void with a three-ball run-out of mostly tap-ins at the end. Beth's late offense helped her get a win to tie the series at 1. Beth made a pair at the start and the end of game 3, overcoming a three-ball run in the middle from Daisy. Beth's finish was a double-pot of the 6 and 7 to the top left for the 2-1 series win. Beth will take on North Modernistic Nighthawks third-year Luigi in round two.
Toyota Arena, Freedom: Stinky v. Dominic. Onto 12-ball, with this series also using the silver cue. Game 1 saw some ugly play, especially at the bottom left. Southern's Dominic gave away two separate wild-card balls, one of which was returned by Freedom's Stinky before he used the other to help him earn a hard win for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 featured more frustration and less sloppiness, with the Monarchs' Dominic receiving the wild-card ball on the break after the Cascades' Stinky potted one of each. Stinky was too loose early on, and Dominic eventually made a three-ball run-out for the win to tie the series at 1. Dominic made two solids and a stripe on the game 3 break, gifting a wild-card ball to Stinky. He gave another freebie away on the next shot, and Stinky slowly but surely attacked his way to an easy win for the 2-1 series win. Stinky will play in the second round.
Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Lorde v. Josie. Moving along to 13-ball, the silver cue stays in action. Capital City's Lorde made two balls early in game 1 and held a lead throughout the game, never letting Oceanside's Josie get close enough to threaten. Lorde won with a pair of shots to take a 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Lorde started game 2 with a four-ball run. The Waves' Josie did well to fight back from here, but not quick enough to stop Lorde from finding the win on a three-ball run-out to clinch the series at 2-0. Josie had Lorde pinned back defensively in game 3, but Josie accidentally potted the 8 early and gifted Lorde the win for a 3-0 series sweep. Lorde will take on Sydney S. of the Harrison Specters in the second round.
HP Field Events Center, Midland: Americus v. Juno. Back in 8-ball, a pair of club-mates collide while using the popular silver cue. Game 1 was a mess on both sides as neither player could corral their shots that well. When Midland's Americus finally did make a pair of balls, she potted the 8 illegally to the top left, gifting Stonebridge's Juno the win for a 1-0 lead in the series. The Wolves' Juno used a four-ball run to get onto the 8 in game 2, but the Predators' Americus was close behind. It didn't really matter, as the 8 proved elusive until Americus deposited into the top side on her fourth try, tying the series at 1. Americus nearly won game 3, her bank on the 8 just missing at the bottom left after she started well. Juno roared back with a four-ball run-out, tapping the 8 home to steal the victory and a 2-1 series win. Juno heads into the second round to face Beth of the Pearl Surfers.
Cisco Arena, Tysini: Vincent v. Quincy. The silver cue draws in again, this time to play Accuracy. Terrace City's Quincy didn't miss in game 1, making life very difficult for a less accurate Vincent of Tysini. Quincy won by a 0-4 score, and he takes the 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Quincy held the lead for most of game 2 as well, but he took a couple of late misses and the Hummingbirds' Vincent easily forced overtime from there. Quincy's overtime break was empty, allowing Vincent to win 2-3 on a single shot to tie the series at 1. Both players were perfect until the final ball, when they each missed to send game 3 into overtime. After a previous double-pot, Quincy had the overtime break, and he came up empty, allowing Vincent to win again at 1-2. Vincent's 2-1 series win sets him up for a Southwestern battle with the Lighton Prestige's Nicole in the second round.
Kraft Forum, Royal: Kayla v. Stripes. More Accuracy with the silver cue is on the way in an event doubleheader. Both players were perfect deep into game 1, but Freedom's Stripes fell apart late, paving the way for Royal's Kayla to win the game 0-3 and take a 1-0 series lead. The Cascades' Stripes was in the hole quickly in game 2, and never got a chance to escape it, as the Crowns' Kayla smothered her opponent immediately. Kayla would win this time by a 1-5 score, clinching the series at 2-0. Kayla took a calmer approach to game 3, allowing a few misses. She fell into a tie after a scratch by Stripes near the end, and Kayla sportingly missed the last ball to skip overtime as Stripes won 3-4. Kayla took the series 2-1 and will visit the North Modernistic Nighthawks' Luigi in round two.
Chevrolet Center, Everton: Cleo v. Jasmine. An underrated veteran meets a resilient captain for 9-ball with the red cue. Freedom's Jasmine scratched to end a three-ball run in game 1, and then Everton's Cleo won two shots later, making the 4 before deflecting off the 5 to drive the 9 to the top right. Cleo leads the series 1-0. The Eagles' Cleo began game 2 on a three-ball run, which the Cascades' Jasmine couldn't muster an answer for. Cleo then ripped a 4-9 combination to the top right, confidently securing the series at 2-0 with the quick win. Cleo made every ball over the course of four turns in game 3, while Jasmine seemingly played for contact and not much else. Cleo's dominance earned her a 3-0 series sweep, which sets her up to visit the Modernistic Union's Puff I in the second round.
Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Spirit v. Sydney C. A legendary player meets a rookie in 10-ball with the silver cue. Lighton's Spirit had some good play early on in game 1, but she mixed in too many scratches. Modernistic's Sydney C. defied gravity to sink the 8 as part of a five-ball run-out, lasering the 9 and 10 after that to get the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Prestige's Spirit remained scratch-happy in game 2 at first, but she made five balls over the last two turns, sandwiched only by a short miss on the 9 by the Union's Sydney C. Spirit's late push was enough to win, tying the series at 1. Game 3 was a close battle between the players, but Sydney C. made her only attempt on the 10 after Spirit couldn't put it away from distance. Sydney C. took the series 2-1 and will face another tough opponent in the Golden Pilots' Dusty in the second round.
Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Panda v. Bianca. A captain and a rising star clash in Rotation with the red cue. Southern's Panda never really offered a challenge in a slow start to game 1. Southridge's Bianca broke away with a five-ball run and ultimately won 8-0 for the 1-0 series lead. The Defenders' Bianca played an even battle at first with the Monarchs' Panda, who had a couple of good shots before a scratch. Bianca then rallied with a six-ball run-out to take the win 8-2, clinching the series at 2-0. Game 3 stayed even throughout, with Bianca rallying ahead near the end, only for Panda to tie and then win 8-7 on consecutive turns. Bianca claimed the series at 2-1, and will visit Chicky Phil of the Web City Spiders in the second round.
Cisco Arena, Tysini: Paps v. Kodiak. The blue cue's first appearance of the day comes in Accuracy. Tysini's Paps missed a shot early in game 1 and never got back into the game, as Modernistic's Kodiak was perfect to earn the 0-3 win for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 stayed a little closer, with chaos at the end of regulation seeing the players go in tied. The Union's Kodiak made a ball on the overtime break, and the Hummingbirds' Paps hung with him until the third round, where his miss gave Kodiak the 1-2 win. Kodiak secured the series at 2-0 in the process. Kodiak refused to relent in game 3, missing only once early on as he played to a 1-4 win for the 3-0 series sweep over Paps. Kodiak's sweep sees him into the second round.
Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Strut v. Sage. A couple of old souls do battle in Rotation with the blue cue to close out the day. Golden's Strut made a pretty easy job of game 1, winning 8-2 over Victoria's Sage, who had some moments on offense but didn't get enough to click. Strut leads the series 1-0. The Spurs' Sage jumped out to a nice lead in game 2, although the Pilots' Strut did catch up with her over the course of a couple of turns. Sage then replied with a pair at the end for the 8-6 win, tying the series at 1. Sage dominated in game 3, while Strut spent most of his time just playing for contact. Sage took her 8-3 win and added a 2-1 series win to set her up to visit Isabella of the Atlantic Pirates in the second round.
That's all for today. Tomorrow, Tournament Day 8 is the only thing on the league agenda, complete with an early start time.
