The second week of Tournament play is here, beginning with...
Sony Center, Queens: Violetta v. Sierra. A young star takes on a more experienced star in 10-ball with the silver cue. TodavĂa's Sierra was sloppy in game 1, missing multiple easy shots, including one on the 10. Queens' Violetta, who scratched late, converted the 10 to the top side for the fortunate win and 1-0 series lead. The Stills' Sierra improved in game 2, making a four-ball run and adding the last two shots to beat the Flames' Violetta on a 9-10 combination to the top side. Sierra's win tied the series at 1. Sierra dominated in game 3 with a six-ball run, and then she converted the 8-10 combination that Violetta failed to make. Sierra will advance with the 2-1 series win, meeting her own sister Valencia, the Golden Pilots captain, in the second round.
Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Strut v. Kitty. An experienced veteran takes on a rookie in 9-ball with the blue cue. Midland's Kitty didn't dominate in game 1, as Golden's Strut had a fair share of offense in the back-and-forth battle. Kitty did make the last two shots, sniping the 7 to the top left before making the 9 for a 1-0 series lead. The Pilots' Strut answered with a five-ball run-out on his only turn in game 2, ending with a 5-9 combination to the bottom right to stun the Predators' Kitty while tying the series at 1. Strut kept going with three pairs of successful shots in game 3, the last of those enough to get another win over Kitty for the 2-1 series win. Strut's comeback puts him into the second round against Tysini Hummingbirds captain Leandra.
Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Katharine v. Misty. The blue cue remains in action for this 13-ball series. Westside's Misty had the early success in game 1, but couldn't get around the defense of Whitewater's Katharine, who held on long enough to poke a three-ball run-out for the comeback win and 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Katharine employed a similar style in game 2, using defensive positioning to slow down the Rockers' Misty long enough to make another three-ball run-out for the win. Katharine clinched the series at 2-0. Katharine again assembled a late three-ball run in game 3, but it wasn't for the win. Misty had attacked quickly and managed to pick up the win this time, leaving Katharine with a 2-1 series win. Katharine is set to play in the second round.
GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Debby v. Lize. Two underrated players meet in Accuracy with the red cue. Both players had misses early in game 1, but Pronger's Lize didn't miss again, while Southridge's Debby had a late collapse. Lize took the win 1-3 for a 1-0 series lead. The Tridents' Lize and the Defenders' Debby each had an ugly run in game 2, which saw Debby briefly hold the lead. She then went on another bad run, and Lize emerged from the carnage ahead 4-6, securing the series at 2-0. Debby and Lize played perfectly in game 3 until the final ball, where Debby scratched as she made it to gift the 0-1 win to Lize, who in turned swept the series 3-0. Lize advances to meet the Lighton Prestige's Shiny in the second round.
Nissan Hall, Infinity: Mr. Snowman v. Klaus. The silver cue takes a turn for 9-ball between two steady players. Game 1 went fast, as Mr. Snowman made four balls on the break before committing a foul. Atlantic's Klaus replied with a four-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Pirates' Klaus again was better from the run of play with seven balls over three turns, but the Torpedoes' Mr. Snowman made the final pair of shots for the win, which tied the series at 1. Mr. Snowman struck on the break in an evenly played game 3 battle, but it was his last shot, a decoy play on the 6 that drifted around to pot the 9 at the top right, that ultimately sunk Klaus. Mr. Snowman won the series 2-1 and will advance to the round two.
Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Dani v. Tigerette. Purple Derby rivals clash in 8-ball with the silver cue. Viewpoint Sound's Dani made a ball on the break, then allowed Commerce's Tigerette to clear some space before Dani rallied on a four-ball run-out for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Tigerette got down to her last ball in two turns in game 2, but it didn't matter, as the Meteors' Dani rallied for the win on a seven-ball run-out. Dani's well constructed finish sealed the series at 2-0. Dani had a decent break in game 3, but Tigerette started hot and never cooled off, winning in three turns to avoid the sweep. Dani's 2-1 series win sees her advance to face Swordpoint Blades star Dreamy in the second round.
Ford Forum, Pronger: Precious v. Misty. Captains duke it out in 7-ball with the red cue. Westside's Misty won game 1 with one successful shot, deflecting the cue off the 2 to drive the 7 to the bottom right while the 2 banked to the top left. Misty's win gave her a 1-0 series lead over Pronger's Precious. The Tridents' Precious didn't stay behind for long, battling closely in a rough-to-watch game 2 that saw her split possession with the Rockers' Misty. Precious did enough on the 7 to get the win, tying the series at 1. Precious wasted no time in securing the series, winning game 3 on the break as the 7 was launched into the top left. Precious' 2-1 series win sees her into the second round.
AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Josie v. Hoot. Coastal rivals with an underlying vicious club animosity clash in 15-ball with the red cue. Oceanside's Josie had the better of the offense in game 1, lifting herself over Viewpoint Sound's Hoot by making the last two shots for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 was a close and chippy battle that saw the Waves' Josie whiff on the 15 at the top side. The Meteors' Hoot converted cleanly for the win, tying the series at 1 after a back-and-forth affair. Josie had a good share of offense in game 3, although things dried up a bit in the middle. However, it was Hoot's savvy light deflection off the 8 to tap the 15 in the top right that won the game and the 2-1 series for the visitor. Hoot goes on to round two.
AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Dewey v. Marsell. A doubleheader at the venue sees the second series coming in 7-ball with the blue cue. Whitewater's Marsell made an impact in game 1, running out the last four balls after Oceanside's Dewey had started fairly well. Marsell's hot finish gave him a 1-0 series lead. Both players saw their first turns in game 2 end in a scratch after making multiple shots, which favored the Shores' Marsell, who took the last two balls cleanly from ball-in-hand to defeat the Waves' Dewey again. Marsell clinched the series at 2-0. Marsell didn't dominate in game 3, allowing too many chances for Dewey to eke out a win, which is what he did at the end. Marsell won the series 2-1, and will face the Royal Crowns' Cassie in the second round.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Puff I v. Chris. A pair of casual-style veterans meet in 12-ball with the blue cue. Capital City's Chris began aggressively in game 1, but couldn't line up his final ball at the bottom side. Modernistic's Puff I ripped a three-ball run-out at the end after defending well, taking the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Chris flipped the script in game 2, starting from behind the Union's Puff I but patiently attacking and winning at the bottom side that eluded him in the previous battle. The series is tied at 1. Chris gave away two wild-card balls in game 3, which was easily the cause of his problems, as Puff I made a pair of shots each time he did, taking the easy win for a 2-1 series win. Puff I will meet Stonebridge Wolves captain Juno in the second round.
Ford Forum, Pronger: Potter v. Sparkles. The red cue returns to action for 10-ball between these club rivals. Pronger's Potter made the first and last balls and did just fine in between in his battle with Golden's Sparkles. Potter's win gave him a 1-0 series lead, although it could have gone the other way. The Tridents' Potter attacked well in game 2. He did see the Pilots' Sparkles push a four-ball run near the end of the game, but she scratched as she went for the 9. Potter made the last two shots easily, clinching the series at 2-0. Potter had his best attack in game 3 with a five-ball run, but he missed on the 10 on a later turn, and Sparkles capitalized to get the win. Potter's 2-1 series win sets him up against Starlight of the Pacific Volcanoes in the second round.
FedEx Arena, Eastside: Cubby v. Whiskers. A strongman takes on a wily veteran in 7-ball with the blue cue. Maplewood's Whiskers capitalized on Eastside's Cubby leaving the 7 too near to the top right. Whiskers converted it on a 2-7 combination on her first turn, giving the star a 1-0 series lead. The Lumberjacks' Whiskers started with a three-ball run in game 2, but a late scratch wasted the early offense. The Sharks' Cubby went off with a pair of shots at the end, tying the series at 1 with his win. Game 3 saw both players start well and then make massive mistakes at the end. Whiskers' was worst, missing the 7 from ball-in-hand, which left Cubby to cut it to the top right for the win and 2-1 series win. He will take on Sharks teammate Chelsea in the second round.
BMW RockDome, Westside: Midnight v. Mario. The silver cue returns for this series in 9-ball. Westside's Midnight had a five-ball run early in game 1, and just managed to avoid total collapse. Queens' Mario pressured on the 9 but left it hanging at the bottom left, where Midnight tapped it in to win for a 1-0 series lead. The Rockers' Midnight had an early error in game 2, allowing the Flames' Mario to make a mark with a four-ball run. Midnight then replied with a four-ball run-out to seal the win and take the series at 2-0. Midnight kept it simple in game 3, splitting possession with Mario fairly well at first before striking in a three-ball run-out for the win to sweep the series 3-0. Midnight advances into round two.
UPS Hall, Maplewood: Summer v. Precious. Today's final series sees the red cue in action for 8-ball. Pronger's Precious took the lead early in game 1 and wouldn't let go for anything, as Maplewood's Summer tried and failed to answer a five-ball run. Precious finished with a pair of shots for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Lumberjacks' Summer played with fire in game 2, allowing the Tridents' Precious to get onto the 8 before rallying back with her own four-ball run-out to snag the win that tied the series at 1. Precious had plenty of time in game 3, after Summer's first two turns ended in scratches. Summer laid low for awhile, then attacked with a four-ball run-out to stun Precious for the game and 2-1 series win. Summer will meet Boots of the Pearl Surfers in the second round.
We'll be back tomorrow after Select cricket action.
