This will bring us one-quarter of the way through the season. Teams should about know what they are, and the battle for positioning will begin in earnest. This final section of the first quarter begins with...
Microsoft Pitch at Del Sur: The Pilots seek a season sweep on the road after a week 1 victory at home against the Monarchs. Valencia carved out 560 for Golden to start the game. Panda answered with 456 for Southern to make it a close start to the game. Dusty pounded 722 to give the Pilots a more solid lead. Shannon got tripped up at 81 for the Monarchs, leaving them far behind at the halfway mark of the game. Strut had only 80 in response for Golden, which didn't help to secure the lead at all. Kirstin ended with a bad bounce that gave her 223 to supply to Southern. A. Charlton poked 256 to give the Pilots a final of 1618, likely on their way to victory. Nicole posted 225, but the Monarchs took a heavy loss at 985 total. Golden completed the sweep to get to 12-7, while Southern drops to 5-14, again squandering a chance to gather momentum.
GE Stadium, Southridge: The Swifts continue their regional road trip, visiting their closest neighbors. Patches got off to a strong start for Boston, hauling in 672 to give them a solid start. Boots kept things reasonable, taking 552 for Southridge to keep the score close. Puff II slugged 1097 for the Swifts, likely closing in on a second consecutive player of the week award. Debby melted under pressure for the Defenders, claiming only 161 as they face a large deficit. Gradley tapped 280 to keep Boston in charge. J. Garcia put up 209 for Southridge, but this doesn't fix their problem as they trail significantly late in the game. Sweetheart's 614 likely sealed the Swifts win at 2663. Shaggy had just 108 for the Defenders, and their loss went official when they finished with 1030. Boston stands at 14-7, winning the last seven road games and their last five overall, while Southridge is a weak 4-11 already.
Blades Fusion ProGlide Park, Swordpoint: The Blades seek a season sweep after beating the Crowns about a month ago. Frosty had one graze off the tip of her bat, ending her turn at 240 for Royal in a middling start. Snowball gave Swordpoint a narrow lead by producing 327. Jake's turn came to an end when he tried to influence a ball heading behind him, as he flicked it up and out of bounds to score 291 for the Crowns. Dreamy posted only 215 for the Blades, making it a very close game at the halfway point. Jake gave Royal a noticeable lead with his turn of 368, keeping things interesting. Shawn sliced 416 for Swordpoint, giving them the slight edge heading into the final players. Nightfur had only 145 for the Crowns, with her miscue likely costing the visitors the game. Stealth gave the Blades a win by striking 360 individually for a team total of 1318. Swordpoint is cruising at 14-4 in second place league-wide (first in the West Division), while Royal drops to 6-8 as they've lost a bit of momentum.
Audi Knights Pitch, Terrace City: These Center Division rivals are set to tangle again after the Knights humiliated the Defenders in Southridge last week. Boots didn't exactly have the best start with 265 for Southridge, but it's far better than the last time these teams met. Kiwi kept it close, taking 227 for Terrace City in a mediocre opening. Debby countered with 848 for the Defenders, giving them a much stronger lead the second time around. Jennifer got some of it back for the Knights, lining 341. J. Garcia took her foot off the gas after calming a backhanded ball, ending up with 153 for Southridge after an odd bounce sent the ball back behind her. Oreo had an unfortunate redirect of a ball directly into her wicket, ending her turn at 192 for Terrace City as they appear to be struggling again. Shaggy stepped up with 522 for the Defenders, giving them 1788 total in what appears to be headed for a win. Stripes had an admirable rally for the Knights, but her 627 left them short at 1387. Southridge gets revenge and earns a season split, improving to 5-11, while Terrace City's regression puts them at 11-6, but they are also 9-2 in division, over halfway done with that slate.
Apple Park, Todavía: The first half of the Spanish Derby goes with this battle between the two Coastal Southwest teams. Panda apparently had all the information for Southern, using bat acrobatics to wrangle in 411 for a solid start. Easter got punished when she failed to kill her turn, and on the optional replay, the Todavía captain produced a meager 139. Shannon didn't do much better for the Monarchs, raking in 214 in a quick appearance. Sierra over-swung on one ball, causing her to send the next offering directly into the stumps, ending her turn with a measly 25 for the Stills as the game turns sloppy. Kirstin sprayed 480 for Southern to pump up their lead a little bit. Leonardo was a bit erratic on his turn, and he scored only 208 for Todavía. Nicole carved out another 314 to put the Monarchs at a final of 1419. The highly inconsistent Sparkles had 98 for the Stills, and they had no chance by finishing at 470. Southern gets a big division win over a hated rival to go to 6-14, while Todavía crosses the quarter mark at 7-9, skidding with a five-game losing streak at this point.
Cisco Tysini Field, Tysini: A mostly untraveled team this season, the Rockers get a second road game in a row, now in the southwest. Misty proved content with 433 for Westside, rejecting the optional replay to give her team a respectable lead. Princess faltered again for Tysini, wrangling a meager 60 points to open their slate. Goatee belted 801 for the Rockers, solidifying their lead. Leandra responded with a massive 1143 for the Hummingbirds, closing the gap almost all the way. Midnight took in only 80 for Westside, now leaving them vulnerable after the poor effort. Charli's 336 carried Tysini into a modest lead with a player each to go. Chicky Phil managed 375 for the Rockers, forcing a response from their hosts as they finish with 1689. Bright's 405 settled the Hummingbirds in with a final of 1944, giving them the definitive win. Tysini improves to 10-5, keeping them atop the second tier of teams, while Westside collapses to 4-7 now.
Sprint Pitch, Victoria: Two teams near the bottom of the table get a meeting this week. Strawberry slapped 424 for Pronger to give them a decent opener. Spice pummeled 853 for Victoria, giving them the initial lead in the game. Hoot suffered from a deflection that toppled him with only 113 to add to the Tridents efforts. B. Chapman, in the midst of a remarkably consistent season, tacked on 655 for the Spurs to strengthen the lead. Precious pulled back with 281 for Pronger, but that didn't cover the current deficit. Yekaterina chipped in 207 for Victoria, maintaining their lead well. Paps did not do all that well for the Tridents, with his 253 giving them a losing total of 1071. Kavan batted 328 for the Spurs, icing their win at 2043 overall. Victoria gets one step closer to climbing out of the hole, now standing at 6-12, level on win percentage with the 5-10 Pronger side.
Volkswagen Stadium, Viewpoint Sound: Boots slipped up, taking on just 96 for Southridge in a poor start for the visitors. Mr. Snowman launched 513 for Viewpoint Sound in response, giving them a sizable lead. Debby also had a poor showing for the Defenders, scoring a weak 33 in her turn. Mams simply didn't have it tonight for the Meteors, taking 80 on her third attempt after earning replays for a technical error and a false start. J. Garcia, somewhat sadly, doubled the Southridge offense by poking 131 in another anemic effort from the visiting team. Zach posted 324 for Viewpoint Sound, keeping their lead confident if not large. The Defenders ended in a loss with 491 after Shaggy led the team in offense with her 231 at the back of the lineup. Kelly capped the Meteors win with 471 from herself for a team total of 1388. Viewpoint Sound's win sends them to 5-9, while Southridge drops to 5-12.
Home Depot Forum, Web City: More action from the bottom half of the table continues with this game. Royal's Frosty was granted a rare replay from outside the rules due to unforeseen extreme technical difficulties, but her make-up appearance produced only 153 for the team. Shadow got cut down with an unlucky bounce, but he had 529 for Web City, looking much more comfortable in this appearance than in his early season work. Jake countered with a big 668 for the Crowns, keeping them in the game. Rainmane kept the Spiders steady, knocking 562 to restore a reasonable lead. Marsell had just 184 for Royal, putting them at a deficit again. Sugar batted 401 for Web City, maintaining their lead again. Nightfur ripped 680 for the Crowns, putting them at 1685 and forcing a response from the top-heavy lineup of the hosts. Shiny did enough by hitting 367 to give the Spiders a win with 1859. Web City is up to 4-9 with the win, starting to head in the right direction, while Royal's progress takes another bump to 6-9.
BMW RockDome, Westside: The Monarchs continue their current road run, while the Rockers look to apply pressure in the fourth straight non-division game between low-ranked teams. Panda got frozen with the bat, producing just 106 for Southern to start off with. Misty drilled 623 for Westside, establishing their lead early. Shannon kept the Monarchs alive with 595, a well-balanced attacking effort for the slapper. Goatee did not do her best, scoring 144 as the Rockers lead gets destabilized a bit. Kirstin barely covered the deficit with 192 for Southern, leaving their lead extremely vulnerable. Midnight failed to capitalize, scoring a measly 64 for Westside as things remain close near the end of the game. Nicole rocked 587 for the Monarchs, setting their final score at 1480, a high bar for the hosts to clear. Chicky Phil pushed 168, but the Rockers took a loss at 999. Southern is starting to figure it out at 7-14, while Westside now joins them in winning 1/3 of their games, but in a much smaller sample at 4-8.
Samsung Whitewater Stadium, Whitewater: The game that brings us to one-quarter completion pits two teams showing a range of abilities against each other. Jasmine tallied a decent 304 for Freedom, giving them a respectable opener. Bear tried to get a bit theatrical, and got cut down at 235 for his efforts, leaving Whitewater at a slight deficit early on. Stinky added a little more substance to the Cascades lead, posting 465 on his turn. Twinkie III's current slump continued with her getting only 112 for the Shores, allowing the deficit to grow. Roxy maintained the Freedom lead by tacking on a middling 144, potentially leaving them vulnerable. Cheddar dug in with 423 for Whitewater, leaving the game to mostly be decided by two big sluggers. Nikolai hit 312 for the Cascades, giving them a final of 1225, which is far from safe. Wild Thing unleashed 597 for the Shores, and they took the win with 1367. Whitewater takes a big character win to go to 8-11, while Freedom stumbles to 9-8.
That's it for the first quarter of the season. Another week completed behind schedule, but we will work to overcome the time deficit. Standings update to follow.
