Select Cricket 2018 - Week 14

We're back for the final week before the United Cup second round break. Select leads us off in a disjointed week with...

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks come into this game with Gizmo on the bench, while Cobalt will get a little extra time off for the Wolves, sitting out the first game back from their bye week. Juno couldn't get Stonebridge off the ground, taking a poor 57 on the opening turn. Graham wasn't any better with an awful 16 for Eastside, getting the week off to an ugly start on both sides. Frosty pieced together a more respectable turn with 527 for the Wolves, giving them a strong lead. Chelsea slugged 1153 for the Sharks on their second attack, pulling them ahead halfway through the game. Hershey shot back with 1247 for Stonebridge, continuing to rapidly escalate the offense. Cubby shot back with 631 for Eastside this time, keeping things incredibly close late in the game. Vladimir clubbed 487 for the Wolves at the end, icing their offense at 2318. Salmo couldn't catch up, his 455 leaving the Sharks narrowly short at 2255. Stonebridge pulls off a minor upset over their rivals, rising to 11-18, while Eastside is down to 12-16 on the year.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Wolves return home to finish a doubleheader against the Meteors. Both captains are on the bench, as Juno and Mams are selected to sit this game out. Hoot wasted no time in establishing Viewpoint Sound's offense with 656 on the lead-off turn. Frosty failed to catch up, hitting only 144 in a lackluster first turn for Stonebridge as they'll start from behind. Nibbles faltered with only 176 for the Meteors, weakening their lead on the second attack. Hershey couldn't replicate the magic from last game, falling with a measly 20 points as the Wolves lose ground. Viewpoint Sound saw 140 from Vincent this time, failing to strengthen their lead on another poor turn in a game full of them. Vladimir took 488 for Stonebridge this time, cutting into the deficit late in the game. Dani had a decent 295 for the Meteors, capping their offense at 1267 in a poor team effort. Cobalt couldn't save the day for the Wolves, his 152 leaving them in a loss at 804. Viewpoint Sound retains their position at 10-14, while Stonebridge sinks to 11-19.

Microsoft Pitch, Del Sur: Dominic sits for this game for the Monarchs, as does one of his pool opponents from yesterday, the Spurs' Strawberry. Spice had a cluttered pitch for much of her turn, but she managed to block balls well and produce 416 for Victoria to open the scoring. Avril blew things wide open with 1628 for Southern on their first turn, giving the hosts a massive lead. Yekaterina, stunned by the previous turn, buckled at a pathetic 32 for the Spurs. Hoppy piled on with 441 for the Monarchs, keeping them firmly in control of the game. Sage had a solid 361 for Victoria on her turn, but it appears the visitors just want to get through the game without injury. Panda served up 733 for Southern, continuing to showcase their talents as the game progresses. Wario produced 400 for the Spurs, leaving them with a final score of 1209, ending their recent road success with a loss. Pounce snagged 585 for the Monarchs, capping their great game at 3387 in the win. Southern is up to 16-11, while the gap behind them widens as Victoria falls to 12-13.

Kraft Crowns Park, Royal: The Crowns elect to give Jake a bit of rest in their return home, while the Prestige are forced to sit Acorn after his pool appearance yesterday. Spirit knocked 570 for Lighton in a rare lead-off appearance, struggling at first before settling into a solid groove. Kayla answered with 755 for Royal in a better turn, giving the hosts a noticeable lead on the first turn. Katelynn countered with 562 for the Prestige, covering the deficit with another good turn for the visitors. Jeremias ran out of his good fortune, a deflection beating him at 161 as the Crowns fall behind at the midway mark. Nicole couldn't settle a deflected ball on her backhand, ending at just 88 for Lighton in a rough outing. Nightfur closed the gap with 458 for Royal, using a miracle double-tap on the backhand to pull her side ahead. Waluigi couldn't get the Prestige going, taking a meager 66 as they lost with a total of 1286. Cassie fell with 211 for the Crowns, but this secured their win at 1585. Royal continues a midseason upward surge to 15-10, pulling even with the 12-8 Lighton squad.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Wolves host another regional rival in the Gems, with Hershey missing his first home game while the visitors sit Pedey for rest. Rosalina popped up with 643 for Diamond, an excellent showing for the struggling sophomore. Juno broke out of her recent slump for Stonebridge with 475 in lead-off this time, making it a small deficit facing the hosts. Citrus dropped 733 for the Gems in a big second attack, padding their lead quite nicely. Frosty turned up with 812 for the Wolves, covering that burst of damage as the high-scoring game hits half-completion. Smokey weakened the Diamond lead with 180 in this appearance, leaving them a bit vulnerable. Vladimir took 522, putting Stonebridge ahead with a player each to go after his solid performance. Cassandra barely covered the deficit with 259, leaving the Gems at 1815 to force a tiny response from the hosts. Cobalt tacked on 417, easily meeting the challenge as the Wolves win with 2226. Stonebridge rises to 12-19, while Diamond drops to 8-22.

Sprint Pitch, Victoria: Two players who have gone a long time without a game off get one here, as the Spurs sit Yekaterina while the Sharks rest their captain Graham. Chelsea ripped 717 for Eastside on the opening turn, giving the visitors a stable start to the game. Spice answered with a strong 392 for Victoria, her pace keeping hopes high for the hosts. Gizmo tacked on 713 for the Sharks on their second attack, a brilliant backhand touch keeping the turn going early on. Sage faltered with a mere 54 for the Spurs, deepening their deficit at the halfway point. Cubby popped another 456 for Eastside on his turn, keeping them in control of the game with another good turn. Wario shelved 328 for Victoria, allowing the deficit to grow again as the hosts appear braced for another loss. Salmo had a poor 98 for the Sharks, closing their offense at 1984. Strawberry exited with only 152 for the Spurs, their final score resting in a loss at 926. Eastside gets an upward push to 13-16, while Victoria drops to 12-14.

Sprint Pitch, Victoria: The Spurs finish their pair of home games against the Meteors. Vincent sits for the visitors, while the hosts have Sage on the bench in this game. Mams didn't have the most energetic pace for Viewpoint Sound, but she did contribute 731 to their offense at the start. Spice couldn't get her turn off the ground, taking a false start and then only 162 for Victoria on the second try. Hoot got beat on a deflection that tipped over his bat and took his wicket at a mere 101 for the Meteors. Yekaterina pulled back with 622 for the Spurs, shrinking the deficit dramatically. Nibbles took over with 895 for Viewpoint Sound, mixing pace and longevity to help the visitors regain control. Wario got 312 back for Victoria, but the hosts are in trouble with a player each to go. Dani had a fantastic run of support with a pacey 579 for the Meteors, icing their score at 2306. Strawberry managed 361 for the Spurs, but they took a hard loss at 1457. Viewpoint Sound's minor upset lifts them to 11-14, while Victoria drops to 12-15 as the middle of the pack gets more compact.

Mercedes-Benz Field, Harrison: The Specters will be without Lexi after a recent pool appearance, and the same goes for the Crowns lacking their star Kayla. Jake made one good play on his backhand, but a later deflection off a dead ball knocked him out at 304 for Royal. Sydney tied it up with 304 for Harrison right away, also suffering a deflection to end her turn. Jeremias had a much beefier second attack for the Crowns, racking up 620 to give them a substantial lead. Twinkie II pulled back with 471 for the Specters, keeping them close but behind at the halfway mark. Nightfur slipped up at 345 for Royal, weakening their lead slightly in a close match. Rudolph made it very close again with 488 for Harrison, leading to an exciting finish upcoming. Cassie poked 304 for the Crowns at the end, leaving them with a vulnerable mark of 1573. Mitchell came up with 304 as well, leaving the Specters short at 1567. Royal shoots up to 16-10, while Harrison is now down to 11-18 with nothing but bad luck.

Toyota Pitch, Freedom: The Cascades are without their captain Jasmine due to a minor elbow injury, while the Meteors sit Hoot after a rough outing earlier for his mandated rest. Mams had a rough 232 for Viewpoint Sound on the lead-off turn, putting them in a vulnerable position from the start. Stinky made an acrobatic backhand save to extend his turn, tallying 337 for Freedom for the initial lead. Nibbles scraped a little extra out on a technical error replay, hitting 280 to restore a lead for the Meteors. Roxy couldn't make a clean turn, taking a technical error replay and a false start before scoring a pitiful 28 for the Cascades. Vincent took more command for Viewpoint Sound with his 506, strengthening their lead quite a bit. Nikolai picked up 457 for Freedom, but his team lost more ground to the visitors late in the game. Dani got beat on a deflection at 227 for the Meteors, leaving them a bit exposed at 1245 total. Stripes saved the day with 688 for the Cascades, cashing in on their visitors' late weakness to get the win at 1510. Freedom is up to 19-9, while Viewpoint Sound drops to 11-15.

Volkswagen Stadium, Viewpoint Sound: Diddley's pool appearance forces him to the bench for the visiting Lumberjacks, while the hosts sit Nibbles despite his recent solid play. Whiskers had a good pace going, but an errant high swing ended her turn at 184 for Maplewood, a poor mark. Mams had a frantic start for Viewpoint Sound, a deflected offering soaring high, where she half-volleyed it perfectly, but she slipped and ended at 177. Bryant was a bit better with 330 for the Lumberjacks, but the game remains up for grabs. Hoot answered with an even better 724 for the Meteors, giving them the midway point lead. Gabe gathered 527 to cover the deficit for Maplewood, but they are not out of danger yet. Vincent poked 271 to keep Viewpoint Sound narrowly ahead with a player each to go. Summer delivered quite the challenge with 625 for the Lumberjacks at the end, setting their final at 1666. Dani couldn't recover, ending at 328 for the Meteors, watching them lose with 1500 even. Maplewood rises to 14-16, the top of the bottom half of teams, while Viewpoint Sound sinks again to 11-16.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks will rest their star Chelsea in their second meeting with the Wolves this week, while the visitors sit Vladimir for this particular game. Juno picked up 106 for Stonebridge in an ugly first turn for the visiting team. Graham lifted 858 for Eastside this time, giving the hosts a sizable lead with the effort. Frosty couldn't catch up for the Wolves, her 368 only making minor progress against a large deficit. Gizmo supplied the Sharks with a response of 497, extending their lead halfway through the game. Hershey made a mess of his turn with only 12 for Stonebridge this time, ending any realistic hopes of a comeback. Cubby answered that with a firm 597 for Eastside, putting them even farther ahead late in the game. Cobalt rallied with 441 for the Wolves, but they lost with a mere 927 overall. Salmo tapped 320 to bring the Sharks to their final score of 2272. Eastside is up to 14-16, while Stonebridge sits at 12-20.

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Yellow Derby closes Week 14, with the Gems sitting the struggling Smokey while the Spurs give their captain a rest as well as Spice sits this one out. Yekaterina belted 909 for Victoria on the opening turn, a fantastic effort from the lead-off substitute. Rosalina gained only 366 for Diamond, cutting into the deficit partially. Sage faltered with 176 for the Spurs, getting slightly distracted near the end of her poor outing. Citrus answered with 678 for the Gems, making it a close game at the halfway mark. Wario slipped up at 201 for Victoria, weakening their lead a bit with the sub-par performance. Pedey wasn't much better with 185 for Diamond on his turn, leaving it up to the final players in this one. Strawberry slapped 512 for the Spurs in the end, setting their final score at 1798. Cassandra got beat on a deflection at 57 for the Gems, leaving them to lose at 1286. Victoria jumps to 13-15, while Diamond is down to 8-23.

That's all we've got for Select this week. Elite Week 14 will begin sometime between Wednesday and Friday by my best estimate.
