Tournament 2018 - Round 1 Day 18

We're back after an unplanned and extended hiatus from play. This may be a longer than usual set of games, depending on stamina and time constraints. We begin with...

Apple Center, Todavía: Prism v. Taylor Swift. The silver cue will be the first in action for a series of 7-ball. Todavía's Prism got the first ball on the break, and game 1 remained even throughout. Prism couldn't build on making the 5, leaving Commerce's Taylor to get the win with a bank on the 7 two shots later for a 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Taylor wanted a bit more out of game 2, but an empty break and two scratches halted all of her chances for offense. The Stills' Prism benefited each time, especially after the second scratch when she took the 7 from ball-in-hand to tie the series at 1. Prism came up clutch on the break in game 3, as the 3 bumped the 7 from behind to make it drop in the top side, while the 6 made it a double-pot by falling in the bottom right. Prism defeated Taylor 2-1 in the series to advance to the second round.

Sprint Hall, Victoria: Sage v. Dreamy. Two players who have become close friends meet in Accuracy with the red cue. Swordpoint's Dreamy had the first miss in game 1, which ended up lulling Victoria's Sage into a false sense of security, as she would miss twice later on. Dreamy held true to the end, winning 1-2 for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 started off very similarly as the first, but it quickly turned ugly with both players rattling shots out evenly. The Spurs' Sage fell last, scratching on the last ball, while the Blades' Dreamy converted from ball-in-hand to win 5-6 to clinch the series at 2-0. Dreamy got back into good form in game 3, and while Sage stuck with her early on, she couldn't make the performance last, falling 1-3 in the end. Dreamy earned a 3-0 series sweep to take with her into the second round.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Beth v. Nicole. Players on new teams clash in 10-ball with the silver cue. Pearl's Beth had the better of play in game 1 with a good start, a four-ball run in the middle, and a long cut on the 10 to beat Lighton's Nicole for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Beth picked up where she left off in game 2, getting a five-ball run from the break, but the Prestige's Nicole made a pair of shots from ball-in-hand after Beth's scratch. Nicole then won on her second turn, making the 9-10 combination to the bottom left, tying the series at 1. Game 3 saw another deep run early in the game from Beth, but she got a better finish this time with the last two balls, defeating Nicole 2-1 in the series. Beth heads to the second round with the series win.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Dewey v. Salmo. Sophomores for the club Outcast meet in 12-ball with the red cue. Oceanside's Dewey had a strong performance in game 1, commanding from the start with a pair of solids early on. He worked around the table in a clockwise fashion, and held off a late push by Eastside's Salmo before tapping in the 13 to the top side. Dewey leads the series 1-0. The Sharks' Salmo can blame his own impatience for ruining a positive effort in game 2, as he had a chance to get positioned but gave away a wild-card ball to the Waves' Dewey. This led to a four-ball run-out by Dewey, who clinched the series at 2-0 with the win. Game 3 went well for Dewey with two balls on the break and a relatively easy time getting his positioning later on. Salmo allowed Dewey to make his final break-out move with missed contact on a kick play toward the 15, and Dewey made his last four balls over two turns to earn the sweep at 3-0. Dewey easily advances to the second round.

Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Starlight v. Nibbles. A Coastal derby ensues in Rotation with the silver cue. Viewpoint Sound's Nibbles had a decent start in game 1, but Pacific's Starlight took over with a five-ball run when Nibbles erred. Starlight closed the game with a pair of shots on her next turn to answer a pair from Nibbles for an 8-4 win. Starlight holds a 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Starlight saw game 2 start in similar fashion, but she again kept even with the Meteors' Nibbles early on. Starlight then took things one ball at a time, building up a lead and eventually pulling away in the end for an 8-4 win and 2-0 series lead. Starlight couldn't piece together more than a three-ball run in game 3, while a five-ball run-out sealed the 8-3 win in favor of Nibbles. Starlight still took the series 2-1 to get to the second round.

Ebay Center, Queens: Kyle v. Easter. A returnee takes on a captain in 8-ball with the red cue as we reach halfway in a standard day. Todavía's Easter wasted little time in game 1, answering a three-ball run by Queens' Kyle with a five-ball run of her own. She needed two more turns before executing a three-ball run-out to defeat Kyle for the 1-0 series lead. The Flames' Kyle reversed roles with the Stills' Easter in game 2, answering her three-ball run with a four-ball run. The finish was a bit slower this time, and Easter surrendered ground by illegally potting one of Kyle's balls while scratching. Kyle took over in the end, getting the win to tie the series at 1. Kyle took over in game 3, with a five-ball run from the break and a three-ball run-out on his second turn to grab the win away from Easter. Kyle took the series as well, winning 2-1 to move into the second round.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Kirstin v. Steven. The red cue remains in action this time for a series of 9-ball. Atlantic's Steven had a productive game 1, although it was Everton's Kirstin with the three-ball run from the break. Steven kept it close with short runs and made the last two shots for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Pirates' Steven made two balls on the break and added a third, which was the last in his game 2 opening run. Steven missed the 2-9 combination due to a deflection on the 3 before it found the bottom right, and the Eagles' Kirstin swooped in to make the same play successfully, tying the series at 1 with her win. Steven dominated in game 3, as Kirstin had an empty break leading to Steven making a pair. His next turn was even better, as a six-ball run-out developed to give him the win and 2-1 series win. Steven's dominant effort sends him to the second round.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Gradley v. Waluigi. The blue cue comes aboard for 15-ball in this series. Game 1 had a bit of a slow start, although Boston's Gradley had a clearly stronger presence. Lighton's Waluigi barely made contact on the 4 on one of his turns, and Gradley used that to glance the 4 off the 15 into the bottom right. The 15 also dropped in the bottom side for Gradley's win, making it 1-0 in the series on the double-pot. The Swifts' Gradley had a five-ball run from the break in game 2, an electric start to the game. The Prestige's Waluigi only potted one ball in the game, as Gradley soon made the 5 and then a 6-15 bank combination to the top side to secure the series at 2-0 in his favor. Gradley started a bit slower in game 3, allowing Waluigi some room to create possession, but the game went the distance, and Gradley had a six-ball run-out to pick up the final piece of his 3-0 series sweep. Gradley looked every bit a star as he advances to the second round.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Salmo v. Acorn. Former teammates clash in 7-ball with the silver cue. Eastside's Salmo had a clear possession advantage in game 1, and while he ended a four-ball run by missing the 7, Lighton's Acorn couldn't cut it in either. Salmo made it on his second try for a 1-0 series lead with the win. The two players opened game 2 with dueling three-ball runs on their first turn, but the Prestige's Acorn missed his chance on the 7 and the Sharks' Salmo cleaned it up to clinch the series at 2-0 with another win. Salmo couldn't quite get a grip on game 3, as Acorn picked up a three-ball run late and then made the 7 on his next turn for the win. Salmo did win the series 2-1, a bit of a surprising result as he heads to the second round.

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Leandra v. Katelynn. The silver cue stays in action for this Southwestern Derby in 10-ball. Tysini's Leandra drove play in game 1, working around a handful of errors by Lighton's Katelynn, who had one chance at the win late in the game. Katelynn missed, and Leandra buried the 10 on her second try to take the win for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 featured more balanced play and short runs by both players. Each participant had a chance for a big run late that fell apart, and it was when the Prestige's Katelynn rattled the 10 out of the bottom left that the Hummingbirds' Leandra struck to get the win, securing the series at 2-0 as well. Leandra and Katelynn exchanged three-ball runs throughout the game, although the pace slowed later on. Leandra couldn't quite poke the 10 to the top side, and Katelynn made it at the bottom side for her only win. Leandra advances to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Watermelon v. Dani. The silver cue gets another series, this one in 8-ball. Viewpoint Sound's Dani picked apart the stripes in two turns in game 1, getting a six-ball run on her first turn and then using ball-in-hand after Pearl's Watermelon missed contact to get the last two balls. Dani leads the series 1-0 after the shutout win. The Meteors' Dani needed more time in game 2, although her second turn did feature a five-ball run. The Surfers' Watermelon nearly got back into the series, but she rattled her last solid out of the top left, and Dani converted on the 8 soon after to clinch the series at 2-0. Watermelon managed to salvage game 3 from the series, playing evenly with Dani until the visitor scratched and sank one of Watermelon's solids late in the game. Watermelon got the win, but Dani heads to the second round with a 2-1 series win.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Luigi v. Leonette. The final series today is in 8-ball with the blue cue. North Modernistic's Luigi had a slow start in game 1, allowing Pacific's Leonette to build up her own lead for awhile, but a six-ball run on one turn and a pair of shots on the next gave Luigi the win in the end. Luigi leads the series 1-0. The Nighthawks' Luigi deployed the delayed attack again in game 2, striking earlier with a seven-ball run that almost went the distance had the 8 not sat on the edge of the top right. The Volcanoes' Leonette had no answer for him, and Luigi tapped the 8 in to get the win, securing the series at 2-0. Leonette did get the win in game 3, countering a four-ball run by Luigi with her own five-ball run, and then making a late pair of balls. Luigi still had the series 2-1 to advance to the second round.

I anticipate Tournament play will continue tomorrow after the beginning of Select Week 13.
