Tournament 2018 - Round 1 Day 20

We're back for a standard day under the new Tuesday-Friday scheduling style, which calls for Tournament before cricket. Leading off...

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Stinky v. Sugar. The blue cue gets the first series today in 15-ball between these Reality club-mates. Freedom's Stinky came out of the gate strong in game 1, getting a good share of offense, but his miss on the 9 allowed Web City's Sugar to take a four-ball run, and she made the last two balls two turns later for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Cascades' Stinky had to work much harder in a difficult game 2, which saw many errors on both sides early in the game. The Spiders' Sugar had a brief surge of offense late, but Stinky shut her down with a three-ball run-out, tying the series at 1 with his win. Stinky had another good start from the break in game 3, but his play quickly deteriorated. It took Sugar awhile to pick up the slack, but she double-potted the 13 and 15 at the bottom left after Stinky missed the same combination after a miracle shot on the 12. Sugar took the series 2-1 to get to the second round.

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Stripes v. Missy. A venue doubleheader concludes with 7-ball and the blue cue between veterans. Freedom's Stripes scratched on the break in game 1, and Capital City's Missy shot back with a four-ball run. Stripes would get two of the three remaining balls, but Missy took the 7 for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Missy allowed only one shot for the Cascades' Stripes in game 2, which was a miss on the 2. Missy paired a two-ball run from the break with a five-ball run-out for the win, clinching the series at 2-0 in dominant fashion. Missy lacked the dominant edge in game 3, but she still had a majority of possession and the win in the end, burying the 7 on her second try after Stripes missed her only chance at salvaging a win. Missy goes to the second round with a 3-0 series sweep in hand.

Sprint Hall, Victoria: Strawberry v. Diddley. The blue cue remains in action for this series of 8-ball. Maplewood's Diddley took a high-offense approach in game 1, and while it worked early on, it didn't hold up against a steady defense from Victoria's Strawberry. The host Strawberry held Diddley back and then struck late to get the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Strawberry tried a more attacking style for game 2, getting four balls on a run from the break with a little collateral damage. Diddley make a six-ball run on his first turn and only narrowly missed the 8, which he made after Strawberry failed to muster a counterattack. Diddley's win tied the series at 1. Diddley had the early offense again in game 3, and while Strawberry didn't bunked down as much as in game 1, she still effectively used defense before getting a seven-ball run-out to claim the series at 2-1. Strawberry's big push moves her into the second round.

Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Strut v. Potter. A veteran hosts a sophomore in Rotation with the red cue. Golden's Strut found success in game 1 by using defensive positioning to frustrate Pronger's Potter. The visitor rarely had a clear shot, and his precision was a bit off, allowing Strut to have a four-ball run as the centerpiece of his 8-3 win, which in turn gave him a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw a sequence of errors and chippy runs from both players. The Tridents' Potter did make a 6-12 combination to the bottom right that turned into a double-pot as the 10 fell in the bottom left, but momentum failed him late, and Strut took the 8-7 win to secure the series at 2-0. Strut tried to keep up with a three-ball run by Potter early in game 3, and while the game reached a tied position many times, Potter ultimately won 8-7. Strut still took the series 2-1, advancing to the second round.

Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Sally v. Twinkie II. A Northeastern Derby brings us out of the new lunch break period, with the red cue getting another Rotation look. Archtown's Sally got a ball on the break, but Harrison's Twinkie II had more of the early success on offense. Sally stayed close, and then erupted for a four-ball run-out, winning 8-5 and taking a 1-0 series lead with the sudden burst. The Arrows' Sally had a much more confident start in game 2, taking the early lead and never letting go despite a persistent mid-game attack by the Specters' Twinkie II. Sally recovered from that with a three-ball run-out for an 8-3 win, securing the series at 2-0. Sally had a massive run on her second turn in game 3, getting her to the brink of a win, and while Twinkie II tried to counterattack, it was a short-lived effort. Sally won 8-2, sweeping the series 3-0 as she heads to the second round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Jason V. v. Shaggy. The silver cue gets its first look today in Accuracy in the Aquatic Derby. Whitewater's Shaggy kept things simple for the most part in game 1, and a couple of bounces went her way, while Oceanside's Jason struggled and faltered more frequently. Shaggy won 2-5, taking a confident 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Jason did better in game 2, holding his own and forcing the Shores' Shaggy to miss a couple of shots late in the game. Shaggy's last scratch confirmed her loss, as Jason converted from ball-in-hand for the 2-3 win, tying the series at 1. Jason held on in an even closer game 3 effort, as Shaggy missed early but managed to drag Jason down before her own late miss ended all hopes of a comeback. Jason won the game 1-2 and the series 2-1 to advance to the second round.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Spot v. Roxy. The red cue returns for yet another Rotation series. Freedom's Roxy had a quicker start than did Pronger's Spot, with the visitor taking a three-ball run to establish her lead. She faded for a bit, but Spot never caught up, and Roxy finished with an 8-2 win to take the series lead at 1-0. The Tridents' Spot jumped out to a bit of a lead in game 2, but the Cascades' Roxy hounded him at the start to keep things close. Spot eventually broke free after a long chase on the 9, getting a three-ball run-out to win 8-4, a move that tied the series at 1 game apiece. Roxy built up a nice lead early in game 3, making it difficult for Spot, who rallied with a three-ball run but saw his effort fall short with a scratch. Roxy took two more shots, winning 8-4 to take the series 2-1 as she moves to the second round.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Sweetheart v. Sleepy B. The silver cue returns for more Accuracy as the same two brackets get all the recent attention. Boston's Sweetheart had two balls on the break in game 1, and she exchanged just a single miss with Archtown's Sleepy B. as the game hit overtime. Here, Sleepy B. missed twice, the latter giving Sweetheart a 2-3 win and 1-0 series lead. The Arrows' Sleepy B. again had an early lead in game 2, as the Swifts' Sweetheart scratched on the break, and while the majority of the game was spent tied, Sweetheart missed late again, and Sleepy B. made it stand for a 1-2 win. The series is tied at 1 heading into the decisive game. Sleepy B. had nothing on the break in game 3, and while she held a lead for most of it, she couldn't hold on with a late miss. Sleepy B. also missed on the overtime break, and Sweetheart sealed the 2-3 win and 2-1 series win with a single shot in the extra rack. Sweetheart makes the second round with that win.

Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Hoot v. Paps. The blue cue returns for its second 15-ball appearance today between Oriental United club-mates. Game 1 didn't last long, as Tysini's Paps made illegal contact on his first turn, and the resulting spread left an easy 2-9-15 combination for Viewpoint Sound's Hoot to make from ball-in-hand for the 1-0 series lead. Neither player could claim dominance in game 2, as the majority of play consisted of short runs and exchanges of possession. In the end, the Meteors' Hoot rattled the 15 out of the bottom right, and the Hummingbirds' Paps put it in the top right to win, tying the series at 1. Game 3 went much like game 2, with the players exchanging shots and misses in near equal and even measure. Paps broke through with a bit of luck, his errant shot on the 13 dropping the 15 at the top side for the win and 2-1 series win as he advances past Hoot and into the second round.

Nissan Hall, Infinity: Shelley v. Dreamy. Two veterans clash in 8-ball now, with the silver cue in hand. Infinity's Shelley took a four-ball run in the middle of game 1 after a shaky start, doing enough to rattle Swordpoint's Dreamy. Shelley kept Dreamy pinned back, eventually picking off the 8 to get the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Torpedoes' Shelley got a bit too generous in game 2, giving two balls away to the Blades' Dreamy. Shelley would not-so-ironically lose by two shots, as Dreamy took the advantage and ran with it, tying the series at 1 with her win. Game 3 saw back-and-forth play, with Shelley taking the early lead, Dreamy dominating the middle of the game pretty well, and then Shelley charging back to win on a three-ball run-out for a 2-1 series win. Shelley advances to the second round.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: Cobalt v. Lize. The silver cue stays in hand for 7-ball between a sophomore and injured rookie. Pronger's Lize did pretty well with making single shots, but her lack of a run allowed Stonebridge's Cobalt to exploit her weakness and pick up the last two shots for a win and 1-0 series lead. The Wolves' Cobalt made a pair of balls on the break, but he never saw the table again, as the Tridents' Lize found the strength for a five-ball run-out on her first and only turn. The bold play tied the series at 1, leaving her to face her first league break-shot. Lize came within a shot of taking the series in a close game 3 battle with Cobalt, but her shot on the 7 was just wide, and Cobalt tapped it in for the win. Cobalt advances on a 2-1 series win.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: B. Chapman v. Noelle. Two veterans tangle in today's final series, as the red cue plays Accuracy. North Modernistic's B. Chapman had a rough start to game 1, falling behind, but she played brilliantly late, forcing Central's Noelle into a couple of misses that flipped the game. Chapman took the win 2-3, good for a 1-0 series lead. The Nighthawks' Chapman stuck to the strategy in game 2, but the Warriors' Noelle forced overtime in this one, holding off a late push by Chapman with the game tied. Chapman failed on the overtime break, and Noelle made her one shot to win 2-3, tying the series at 1. Chapman had another strong effort in game 3, holding off Noelle late this time to take the 1-2 win in regulation for a 2-1 series win. Chapman will play in the second round.

That's all for this today. Select Cricket is scheduled to complete Week 13 immediately following this.
