Tournament XI - First Round Day 2

We're back for the second day of First Round play. Leading off...

Audi Hall, Terrace City: Oreo v. Sweetheart. Prime club-mates clash in 10-ball as the red cue makes its round debut. Boston's Sweetheart had a tough time establishing herself in game 1. She made a three-ball run late but missed on the 9 before Terrace City's Oreo won with the final pair for a 1-0 series lead. The Knights' Oreo made a six-ball run to open game 2, but she was silenced after the Swifts' Sweetheart replied on a three-ball run. Sweetheart then earned the win with the 10 at the bottom side to tie the series at 1. Oreo had a good look at the 10 in game 3, but she couldn't knock it down at the bottom left. Sweetheart took it at the top left instead, winning the game and the 2-1 series to get into the second round.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Ice Cream v. Wario. South Division rivals meet in Accuracy with the red cue. Boston's Ice Cream couldn't hold onto her lead in game 1, but she made a pair on the overtime break. Southridge's Wario had no response to that, and Ice Cream took a 3-4 win for the 1-0 series lead. Despite a lackluster break from the Swifts' Ice Cream, both players shot well. Ice Cream faltered late, and the Defenders' Wario held on to win 1-2 to tie the series at 1. Ice Cream couldn't get the right angles in game 3, and Wario found fortune on his side in a 1-4 win to take the series 2-1. Wario is through to the second round.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Katharine v. Nikolai. The blue cue enters the action in Rotation. Whitewater's Katharine had a four-ball run off the break in game 1 and added a double-pot later en route to an 8-4 win over Freedom's Nikolai in game 1. Katharine leads the series 1-0. The Shores' Katharine wasn't as explosive at the start of game 2, but she still had better offense than the Cascades' Nikolai. At the end, a missed contact for Nikolai led to Katharine winning 8-4 again to clinch the series at 2-0. A similar game 3 showing saw Katharine work her way to an 8-4 win once again, sweeping Nikolai out of her way to get into the second round.

Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Max v. Quincy. The green cue draws in for 13-ball. Modernistic's Quincy had good positioning in game 1, but Golden's Max started fast and never slowed down in the win. Max leads the series 1-0. The Pilots' Max made two solids on the break in game 2. He nearly got into trouble as the Union's Quincy made a five-ball run, but Max defended the bottom right well until he could pick off a three-ball run-out for the win. Max sealed the series at 2-0. Max put in a good effort in game 3, but Quincy's work around the edges finally paid off. He had a four-ball run early and eventually added the final pair for his lone win, while Max heads to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

Volkswagen BeetleDome, Viewpoint Sound: Dani v. Molly. The blue cue is back for a 7-ball set. Viewpoint Sound's Dani showed more composure on offense in game, finishing it with a three-ball run-out to take a 1-0 series lead over Southern's Molly. In game 2, the Meteors' Dani started fairly well, but the Monarchs' Molly poked in with a four-ball run-out capped by a 6-7 combination to the bottom right. Molly's win tied the series at 1. Molly went with a left-side break in game 3, and it paid off as she made the 7 to the bottom right for the win and 2-1 series win over Dani. Molly is in the second round.

McDonald's Hall, Atlantic: Buddy v. Angelica. In the East, the green cue plays Rotation. Lighton's Angelica couldn't get much of anything going in game 1. Atlantic's Buddy had good luck early on, then added a four-ball run-out for the 8-2 win and 1-0 series lead. The Pirates' Buddy faded a little bit in game 2, but he didn't stay down for long. The Prestige's Angelica lost her touch in the middle, and Buddy took over for an 8-4 win to secure the series at 2-0. Angelica finally put some offense together in game 3, beating Buddy 8-2 this time to avoid the sweep. Buddy made it to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

Sony Center, Queens: Violetta v. Cheddar. Two competitive players battle in 13-ball with the silver cue. Queens' Violetta put in an explosive break in game 1 and made a four-ball run, but she didn't get back to the table. North Modernistic's Cheddar made a six-ball run-out on her only turn for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Flames' Violetta got down to her last ball in game 2, but she again failed to sneak in for the win. The Nighthawks' Cheddar was patient until she struck a three-ball run-out for the win to seal the series at 2-0. Violetta got close to a win in game 3 as well, only for Cheddar to march in on a five-ball run-out for the win to complete a 3-0 series sweep. Cheddar will play on the road in the second round.

Porsche Events Center, Zenith: Bells v. Maren. An expansion derby goes in Accuracy with the red cue. Apex's Maren faltered late in game 1, and Zenith's Bells didn't budge from her lead. Bells took a 1-3 win to go up 1-0 in the series. Fortunes reversed completely in game 2, as it was the Skywatchers' Bells who stumbled throughout the game. The Wonders' Maren, meanwhile, put in a perfect effort and earned a 0-4 win to tie the series at 1. In game 3, both players kept things close, leading to overtime. Bells employed the soft break strategy, but Maren's blast through the next turn yielded a ball to give her the 1-2 win. Maren is in the second round after a 2-1 series win.

Toyota Arena, Freedom: Andrew v. Luigi. The purple cue's lone series of the day is in 7-ball. Freedom's Andrew made a pair on the game 1 break, but Commerce's Luigi took the last five balls over two turns for the win and 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw both players slow down the pace a little bit. The Cascades' Andrew struggled to get back on track later, and the Tradewinds' Luigi picked up the 7 from distance to the bottom right to clinch the series at 2-0. Luigi slipped from his pace a bit in game 3, and Andrew was there to scoop up the final pair for his lone win. Luigi is off to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

Apple Center, Todavía: Ruby v. Americus. The blue cue cycles in again for 9-ball. Todavía's Ruby wasn't able to connect her offense together in game 1. Midland's Americus finished early with a 4-9 combination to the top left for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Americus stayed strong in game 2, but her miss on the 5 at the bottom left was costly. The Stills' Ruby struck back with a 7-9 combination to the top left on her next turn, earning the win and tying the series at 1. Americus faltered on a ball-in-hand play, missing the 3-5-9 combination to the bottom left in game 3. She left it lined up for Ruby, who converted for the win and 2-1 series win to advance to round two. Both players were each other's 100th unique opponents.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Twinkie III v. Chris. In Rotation, the green cue takes a turn. Capital City's Chris started and ended game 1 on three-ball runs, one to establish a lead and another to fend off Whitewater's Twinkie III. Chris won 8-5 and leads the series 1-0. The Sharpshooters' Chris again held the lead for much of game 2, although the Shores' Twinkie III made her presence felt. Chris had a scratch wipe a double-pot off the board, but he made a three-ball run on the next turn for the 8-5 win to seal the series at 2-0. A back-and-forth battle emerged in game 3, with Twinkie III ultimately getting the 8-6 win over Chris. In the series, Chris won 2-1 to move into the second round.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Chicky Phil v. Smudge. The blue cue exits for the day after 12-ball. Midland's Chicky Phil attacked early and then waited to get positioning. He had plenty of time to hold off Infinity's Smudge, who couldn't get an angle in her favor at the end. Chicky Phil took the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Chicky Phil couldn't get anything on the game 2 break. The Torpedoes' Smudge took a five-ball run and nearly won, then used masse to sink her last ball at the top right for the win to tie the series at 1. Smudge made an early pair in game 3, and Chicky Phil had to make the decision to run through her defense near the end. Smudge then made a three-ball run-out for the win to take the series 2-1 as she advanced to the second round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Megan v. Ms. Puppy. The silver cue is on for 9-ball in its last series today. Despite a late error in game 1, Oceanside's Megan found the 9 at the bottom left for the win and 1-0 series lead over a lackluster showing from Modernistic's Ms. Puppy. The Waves' Megan couldn't find her shot in game 2, and the Union's Ms. Puppy eventually deflected the cue off the 3 to sink the 9 at the bottom left. This tied the series at 1. Megan struggled again on offense in game 3, and Ms. Puppy broke through on a five-ball run-out in the end for the win. Ms. Puppy took the series 2-1 to get into the second round.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Quincy v. Chimpy. The host's second series today is a North Division battle in 12-ball with the red cue. Modernistic's Quincy shot out of the gate on a four-ball run that ended in a scratch. Westside's Chimpy then fired back to make it close, then pushed harder for positioning to win game 1 for the 1-0 series lead. The Union's Quincy looked good for a large part of game 2, but he wasn't able to get onto his last ball. The Rockers' Chimpy surged and picked up the win in a comeback to clinch the series at 2-0. Chimpy had a good start in game 3, but his last shot to line up positioning allowed Quincy to complete his rally at the bottom right. Chimpy settled for a 2-1 series win to punch his ticket to the second round.

Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Luigi v. Solaris. The green cue ends the day with 10-ball between Tradewinds teammates. Solaris made a double-pot of the 2 and 4 to the right corners, but scratched on the 3 on his next shot. Luigi lined up and made a 3-10 combination to the top left for the win and 1-0 series lead. In game 2, Solaris rattled off a five-ball run, only to miss on the 9 near the end. Luigi picked up the final pair smoothly for the win, sealing the series at 2-0. Solaris had a few chances to end game 3 before Luigi did it for him to finish the 3-0 series sweep. Luigi is off the second round.

Tomorrow, we'll continue through the early parts of the First Round.
