Tournament XI - First Round Day 7

The first week of the first round goes in the books after today. The red cue will sit this one out. Leading off...

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Bright v. Dusky. The green cue opens the day with 8-ball. Pearl's Bright was strong on solids from the start in game 1, and Atlantic's Dusky could only try to keep up. At the end, Dusky missed her last stripe before Bright put the 8 in the top side for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Bright put on a late surge in game 2, but missed the 8 twice before the Pirates' Dusky was able to send it to the top right. This tied the series at 1. Bright was too slow at the start of game 3 and didn't have time to catch up as Dusky made a four-ball run-out for the win. Dusky took the series 2-1 to reach the second round.

Sony Center, Queens: Mario v. Goldy. The purple cue gets the second series today, playing 9-ball. Queens' Mario dominated in game 1. He had a pair of three-ball runs and added the last two balls as Everton's Goldy struggled to make any shots. Mario leads the series 1-0. The Eagles' Goldy made a stronger impact with a four-ball run over the middle of game 2, but her miss on the 7 allowed the Flames' Mario to pot the final pair. Mario clinched the series at 2-0. In game 3, Mario botched his shot on the 4, and Goldy used the ball-in-hand to deflect the 9 into the top left for her lone win. Mario still advanced to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

Mitsubishi Arena, Apex: Midnight v. Patches. Players on new teams clash in 7-ball with the green cue. Apex's Midnight was solid in game 1, finishing the win with a 5-7 combination to the top right for a 1-0 series lead over Oceanside's Patches. In game 2, the Wonders' Midnight pulled off a decoy on the 5 to deflect the 7 into the top left to end a three-ball run-out. The Waves' Patches again came up short on offense as Midnight sealed the series at 2-0. Midnight dominated with a five-ball run and a pair on her two turns in game 3, completing a 3-0 series sweep over Patches. Midnight is headed to the second round.

Nissan Hall, Infinity: Shelley v. Avril. The silver cue activates for an 8-ball series. Infinity's Shelley tried a late comeback in game 1, but Pronger's Avril had just enough to hold her off in the end. Avril picked up the win and 1-0 series lead when she put the 8 in the bottom left. The Torpedoes' Shelley had plenty of chances to pick up the win in game 2, but she couldn't do it. The Tridents' Avril overcame a pair of scratches to earn the win that secured the series for her at 2-0. Shelley put in her best effort in game 3, but she was too slow at the end. Avril made a three-ball run-out for the win to complete a 3-0 series sweep. Avril will face the winner of the next series in the second round.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Lily v. Ellie. More 8-ball with the silver cue is up next. Eastside's Lily made a noble effort to try for a comeback in game 1, but she fell short at the end. Capital City's Ellie was able to make her early four-ball run stand for a win and a 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Ellie got nothing off the break in game 2, and the Sharks' Lily struck a five-ball run. On the next turn, Lily made a three-ball run-out for the win to tie the series at 1. Lily had a pair of scratches in game 3, and that proved quite costly. Ellie put together a quick and clean outing for the win to take a 2-1 series win, and she'll visit the Pronger Tridents' Avril in the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Esmeralda v. Maggie. Sophomores are set to meet in 15-ball with the purple cue. Modernistic's Maggie had her chances, especially late in game 1, but she couldn't close it out. Harrison's Esmeralda was also solid and won with the 15 at the bottom right for a 1-0 series lead. The Union's Maggie sustained a lot of pressure for most of game 2, but faltered right at the end. The Specters' Esmeralda didn't mess up, sinking a 14-15 combination to the bottom left for the win to seal the series at 2-0. Maggie pushed again in game 3, but the 15 gave her a lot of trouble at the end. Esmeralda sank it on a bank to the bottom side, completing a 3-0 series sweep. Esmeralda is set to host a second-round series.

Porsche Events Center, Zenith: Nightfur v. Molly. The blue cue gets a look in 10-ball. Southern's Molly made the 3 in an uncalled pocket early in game 1, and Zenith's Nightfur elected to keep possession. Nightfur missed contact on the 4, and Molly took over, winning on a 5-10 combination to the bottom left for the 1-0 series lead. A bad break from the Monarchs' Molly in game 2 made the start a bit slow. The Skywatchers' Nightfur smashed a deflection off the 3 to sink the 10 at the top left for the win, tying the series at 1. Nightfur had a three-ball run near the end of game 3, but she sank the 9 in an uncalled pocket. Molly had a great line on the 10 and converted to the top side for the win, taking the series 2-1 to get into the second round.

Porsche Events Center, Zenith: Paps v. Bear. The venue doubleheader ends with the blue cue in 9-ball. Commerce's Bear had a push in game 1 with a three-ball run, but two late misses hurt him. Zenith's Paps made the 8 on a jump shot and added the 9 at the top left for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Skywatchers' Paps received a ball-in-hand in the middle of game 2, but he couldn't make anything of it. The Tradewinds' Bear answered on a four-ball run-out for the win, tying the series at 1. Paps was unable to keep himself clear on shots, and a late error for illegal contact gave Bear ball-in-hand on the 8. Bear made the final pair for the win and 2-1 series win to move on to the second round.

Starbucks Arena, Archtown: Sally v. Goatee. The blue cue draws in again for 13-ball. Westside's Goatee failed a jump on her last ball at the top side in game 1, and Archtown's Sally replied with five balls over two turns for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Arrows' Sally did a good job with defense to stall out the Rockers' Goatee in the middle of game 2. Sally then made a pair at the end, finishing a bank of the 8 to the bottom right to clinch the series at 2-0. Goatee finally had a breakthrough in a close game 3. Sally was unable to finish things off, and Goatee rallied for her lone win of the series. Sally advanced to the second round with a 2-1 series win.

Nissan Hall, Infinity: Fluffina v. Blake. The purple cue administers the 100th series of the round in Rotation. A close start to game 1 saw neither player able to get much room. Infinity's Fluffina carried momentum in the middle, but Freedom's Blake prevailed 8-6 for the 1-0 series lead. The Torpedoes' Fluffina answered in a big way in game 2, dominating the action for a 9-1 win after she double-potted the 9 and 15 to the left corners. The series versus the Cascades' Blake is tied at 1. Fluffina doubled down in game 3, attacking with three balls on the break. Blake never managed a real challenge, and Fluffina won 8-1 to take the series 2-1. She'll host again in the second round.

FedEx Arena, Eastside: Maison v. Autumn. A South Division rivalry goes in 9-ball with the silver cue. Eastside's Maison made a five-ball run over the middle of game 1 before a miss on the 9. Diamond's Autumn also missed it, and Maison's second try went down for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Gems' Autumn didn't adjust well enough to a slower pace in game 2, as she still left too many shots on the board. The Sharks' Maison made the final pair for the win, securing the series at 2-0. Maison tried to get a little too fancy in game 3, and that would cost him in the end. Autumn plucked the final pair for her lone win, while Maison took a 2-1 series win to the second round.

Porsche Events Center, Zenith: Paps v. Stephanie. The host's second series today is in Accuracy with the purple cue. Both players landed hard shots in game 1, but Zenith's Paps faltered a bit more at the end. Swordpoint's Stephanie held on at the end to win 1-2, going up 1-0 in the series. The Blades' Stephanie was perfect until a brutal miss at the top right sent her into a spiral. The Skywatchers' Paps locked in late and stole a 2-3 win, tying the series at 1 in a huge momentum shift. In game 3, Stephanie picked a good time to make a turn toward perfection. She locked down a 0-3 win over Paps for the 2-1 series win, and Stephanie will continue her travels in the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Bucco v. Leonardo. The blue cue exits the day with 9-ball. Harrison's Bucco had the better offense in game 1, and he was rewarded when Diamond's Leonardo slipped up on the 8. Bucco made the final pair in the win and went ahead 1-0 in the series. The Specters' Bucco couldn't find much offense in game 2. The Gems' Leonardo wasn't great either, but he deflected off the 7 to drive the 9 to the top left for the win, tying the series at 1. In game 3, Bucco made a six-ball run early on, but his offense dried up after that. Leonardo eventually cut the 9 into the top left for the win and 2-1 series win that took him to the second round.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Watermelon v. Nightfur. The visitor's second series today is on the road in Rotation with the silver cue. Pearl's Watermelon started well in game 1, then struggled late. Zenith's Nightfur was steadier throughout to earn the 8-6 win and 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Watermelon didn't get her offense started on time in game 2, and the Skywatchers' Nightfur chipped in a pair here and there to cruise to an 8-2 win. Nightfur secured the series at 2-0 with this win. Watermelon avoided the sweep with a more confident game 3, taking an 8-4 win over Nightfur. It'll be Nightfur who heads to the second round on a 2-1 series win.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Panda v. Gal. The silver cue closes out the day in 8-ball. Everton's Panda had a five-ball run early in game 1, and North Modernistic's Gal couldn't keep pace. Panda eventually made a pair at the end for the win to go ahead 1-0 in the series. The Nighthawks' Gal looked better in game 2 with a five-ball run, but she couldn't settle it down after that. The Eagles' Panda racked up a six-ball run-out in response, earning the win to clinch the series at 2-0. In game 3, Gal put forth her best effort, but a pair of four-ball runs gave Panda the win and a 3-0 series sweep. The top-seeded Panda will host again in the second round.

That's it for today's action, with more scheduled tomorrow.
