The Infinity Torpedoes came into the new season with one less word in their name (dropping City), and a new logo to complement the name change. The one thing that didn't change was the roster, which was one of the biggest offseason gambles in the league. All four players were considered borderline saves, but the Torpedoes thought year two of their rebuild would yield fruit. So far, they've been very wrong in that regard. With a record of 12-20, the Torpedoes sit 27th in the league. Their home record is an atrocious 6-12, while their road record of 6-8 also leaves quite a bit to be desired. Making matters worse is their 2-6 record in games against the West Division, admittedly a tough division to play in this season.
One thing the Torpedoes have going for them is a better-than-bad average of 1384 points per game as a team. Leading off the batting order is the captain, and longest-tenured player, Smudge. She carries a 410 point average to lead the team, good for 29.5% of the total offense. Smudge also has a consistency of about 1.6, making her a very potent threat for the team. Behind her, the offense dips a bit with Shelley, who hits 389 per game to make up 28% of the offense. Shelley also carries a high consistency, just under 1.6 herself, which leads to a lot of similar production as Smudge at the top of the lineup. Next up in the order, Gabe hits 347 per game, holding his own this season as he clocks in with 25% of the team offense. Gabe has a consistency mark of around 1.5, which is sufficient given his average but could be a little lower to add some flair to the offense. Rounding out the lineup is an offensive anchor, as Whiskers hits just 237 a game, making up only 17% of the offense. Whiskers has a consistency of about 1.3, which certainly helps a bit, but might even be a bit too high given the paltry average. The Torpedoes may realize that they are playing for their jobs and go on a second-half tear. The fate of this team rests on how the top three can avoid regressing, and how much Whiskers can improve. I don't think it'll make much difference, and they'll be out of the playoffs at season's end.
