Pool: 2016 A-level First Round - Day 24

Here's the finale of the first round. As mentioned at the end of the last post, I don't have an estimated start date for the second round. Administrative tasks will be completed by tomorrow afternoon. First up is...

BMW RockDome, Westside: Misty v. Mr. Snowman. The red cue leads us off with Accuracy. Westside's Misty fell behind early in game 1 after a rough break, but Viewpoint Sound's Mr. Snowman failed to hold the lead, eventually falling into a tie that forced overtime. Mr. Snowman had a soft overtime break, which bought him a bit more time, but his scratch sealed a 5-6 loss to give Misty the 1-0 series lead. The Meteors' Mr. Snowman had a dramatic improvement, avoiding a late fall-off to claim an 0-2 win over the Rockers' Misty, who was pretty good herself, tying the series at 1. Mr. Snowman faded again in game 3, but it took a lucky shot from Misty to force overtime, where she missed just narrowly two turns in for a 3-4 loss that gave Mr. Snowman the 2-1 series win. Ranked #99 for Accuracy, Mr. Snowman heads to Nike Field Events Center in Commerce to face the Tradewinds' Lionel in the second round.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Watermelon v. Yekaterina Vasilyeva. The red cue stays up for its busy day, playing 10-ball now. Victoria's Yekaterina needed only one shot to turn a solid break from Pearl's Watermelon into her own win, shooting an odd-angle 1-10 combination to the top right, kicking the 1 off the top rail to glance it off the 10 for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Watermelon made a boneheaded mistake in game 2, ending a late three-ball run by trying to glance the cue off the right rail to pot the 9 from short range. The shot failed, and the Spurs' Yekaterina tapped in the last two balls to seal the series at 2-0. Watermelon had illegal contact on the 6 late in game 3, and Yekaterina went for a three-ball run-out from ball-in-hand to grab the win and a 3-0 series sweep. Ranked #86 for 10-ball, Yekaterina travel to Capital City SuperCenter, facing the Sharpshooters' Missy in the second round.

Kraft Forum, Royal: Marsell v. Alyssa. The red cue wraps up its Accuracy bracket for the first round with this series. Royal's Marsell did a good job of limiting mistakes in game 1, inducing one late miss for Oceanside's Alyssa and then holding on to win 1-2 for a 1-0 series lead for the host. The Crowns' Marsell nearly lost in game 2, but the Waves' Alyssa botched a shot on the 10 to force overtime, and then missed it again and lost 3-4, paving the way for Marsell to clinch the series at 2-0. Marsell kept the attack up against another erratic performance from Alyssa in game 3, winning 2-3 to take the series in a 3-0 sweep. Ranked #1 in Accuracy, Marsell will host Patches of the Boston Swifts at this venue in the second round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Shadow v. Oreo. The red cue keeps up the workload with more 10-ball. Terrace City's Oreo won a sloppy game 1, tapping in the 10 at the top right after Web City's Shadow left it short in an uninspired meeting that ended with a 1-0 series lead for Oreo. The Knights' Oreo had slightly better possession in game 2, but it didn't make for much better pool, as it was another messy game highlighted by a single three-ball run from Oreo and her medium-range shot on the 10 to clinch the series at 2-0 over a lethargic Spiders captain Shadow. Oreo fell off a bit in game 3, and this allowed Shadow to step up and grab a win on a three-ball run-out after Oreo missed the 8. Oreo still won the series 2-1, and her #88 ranked 10-ball bid takes a short trip to Westside's BMW RockDome to partake in a Suburban Derby with the Rockers' Chicky Phil in the second round.

Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Mams v. Shaggy. The red cue gets a fifth straight series, playing 10-ball again. Viewpoint Sound's Mams made three balls on the break but didn't pot another until after Southridge's Shaggy saw her six-ball run end with a short shot on the 10. Mams tapped the 10 to the top right to win and take a 1-0 series lead. The Meteors' Mams played slightly better in game 2, involving herself throughout the sloppy game as she and the Defenders' Shaggy used defense to frustrate each other. Mams ended up getting the win by making the last two balls for a 2-0 series lead. Game 3 also had a rough start, but it ended up alright, with Mams scoring a four-ball run, only to be shut down with a three-ball run-out from Shaggy for the win, making it a 2-1 series win for Mams. Ranked #2 in 10-ball, Mams will host Lionel of the Commerce Tradewinds at this venue in the second round.

BMW RockDome, Westside: Misty v. Rainmane. The red cue finishes all first round activities with this 10-ball series. Web City's Rainmane figured out game 1 a bit faster than Westside's Misty, working a four-ball run that set the tone before she finished the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Rockers' Misty was holding her own in game 2 until she left the 5 dangerously close to the 10, and the Spiders' Rainmane was true with the shot, winning the game and sealing the series at 2-0 with a solid design play, which was her third of the game. Misty picked up a pity win in game 3 after Rainmane couldn't corral the 10 to end her three-ball run, and Misty took it for a 2-1 series. Rainmane, ranked #93 in 10-ball, heads to Central's Nestle's Warriors Hall to face the Warriors' Gizmo in the second round after her series win.

Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Nicole v. Zach. The blue cue is up for 9-ball now as things begin to wind down a bit. Viewpoint Sound's Zach charged to the finish in game 1 after Southern's Nicole had an iffy miss, running out the final five balls to take the win and a 1-0 series lead in dominant form. The Meteors' Zach made a huge screw-up late in game 2, hitting the cue too softly and watching it drift off the mark for the 9. The Monarchs' Nicole gladly mopped up the shot for the win, tying the series at 1. Zach had more control in game 3, although Nicole had the highlight of a double-pot that sent the 1 to the bottom side and the 6 off two rails to the top side. Zach still finished with the 5-9 combination to the bottom right to take the series 2-1. Ranked #85 for 9-ball, Zach will travel to Web City's Home Depot Forum for a second round series with the Spiders' Shadow.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Chimpy v. Leonette. The blue cue keeps its 9-ball spurt up. Modernistic's Chimpy was in fine form until a late scratch in game 1, which allowed Pacific's Leonette to work a three-ball run-out from ball-in-hand, collecting the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Union's Chimpy had a similar approach in game 2, but it was his narrow miss on the 6 that set the Volcanoes' Leonette up for a three-ball run-out to clinch the series at 2-0, highlighted by her diagonal bank of the 8 to the top left while leaving good position on the 9. Chimpy rallied back on a five-ball run-out to get a piece of the series by winning game 3. Leonette still took the series 2-1, and travels with her #86 ranked 9-ball campaign to Victoria's Sprint Hall for a second round series with the Spurs' Spice.

Intel Center, Diamond: Pedey v. Yekaterina Vasilyeva. The last 9-ball series with the blue cue is also a rookie battle. Pedey ended up with the game 1 victory, working a three-ball run-out to stymie the attack of Victoria's Yekaterina, and Pedey took a 1-0 series lead in the process after a tight game. The Spurs' Yekaterina needed a couple of shots at the 9 in another mediocre game 2, but she eventually sank it after the Gems' Pedey couldn't, with the win good enough to tie the series at 1. Pedey truly embarrassed himself in game 3, missing the 9 from point-blank range, allowing Yekaterina to waltz away with the 2-1 series win. Ranked #90 in 9-ball, Yekaterina will have a short trip to Infinity to face the Torpedoes' Shelley at Nissan Hall in the second round.

Ebay Center, Queens: Paige v. Twinkie I. The silver cue ends the first round with Rotation, same as it started. Lighton's Twinkie I appeared ill-prepared for the blitz attack from Queens' Paige, who started with a double-pot of the 1 and 12 to the bottom right and bottom side, and ended her 8-2 win on a three-ball run-out for a 1-0 series lead. The Flames' Paige had to show a bit of resilience in game 2, rallying three separate times from multi-ball deficits to tie the game, with the last time being on a three-ball run-out to stun the Prestige's Twinkie I with an 8-7 win that sealed the series at 2-0. Paige rallied for a quick four-ball lead at the start, and won 8-2 on a four-ball run-out sealed with a crazy bank of the 9 to the top side for the win and a 3-0 series sweep. Ranked #4 in Rotation, Paige, is set to host Dustin of the Central Warriors at this venue in the second round.

That's all for this round. Standings will be updated tonight, as soon as I solve a clerical error, and the schedule will be up tomorrow. Expect fireworks in tonight's Club Cricket Challenge Final from Chevrolet Field in Everton.
