Today may end up being a bit lighter in gameplay, as there are the CCC Semifinals tonight to chew up some time. We begin with...
Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Missy v. Sugar. The day begins with the silver cue in 8-ball. Web City's Sugar had a four-ball run to help her rally in game 1, and after Capital City's Missy missed on the 8, Sugar cashed in with the last two balls to pick up the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Sugar had a solid answer to a five-ball run by the Sharpshooters' Missy in game 2, running five herself before scratching, and then running out the last four on her final turn to secure the series at 2-0. Missy had a big rally at the start of game 3, and carried that through to the end to pick up a win and make it a 2-1 series win for Sugar. Ranked #78 for 8-ball, Sugar travels to Tysini's Cisco Arena to face Charli XCX of the Hummingbirds in the second round.
Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Mams v. Stinky. The red cue wraps up its first round obligations in 12-ball now. Viewpoint Sound's Mams got off to a wonderful start, but Freedom's Stinky clamped down on defense before his four-ball run-out to swipe a win and 1-0 series lead with good execution of tough shots. Game 2 played out very deliberately, but Mams of the Meteors would come to regret giving up a wild card ball, as the Cascades' Stinky kicked the 6 into the top left as an option that helped him secure the series at 2-0 after a bit of struggle. Mams had a better set up in game 3, even after giving back her wild card ball, and she beat Stinky to the finish. Stinky won the series 2-1, and he takes his #105 ranked 12-ball bid to Lighton's Pepsi Arena to face the Prestige captain Acorn in the second round.
Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Tigerette v. Stinky. The Cascades' veteran treks east a tad to complete his doubleheader. Freedom's Stinky forced Commerce's Tigerette into a bad shot late in the game, and she scratched, eventually losing 1-3 as Stinky gained a 1-0 series lead with the savvy play. Both the Cascades' Stinky and the Tradewinds' Tigerette stayed perfect in regulation of game 2, but it took only one turn in overtime for Stinky to miss on his break, and Tigerette tapped in the 4 to get a 0-1 win and tie the series at 1. Game 3 also went to overtime after a horrendous start that saw Stinky emerge ahead, but he couldn't hold on. Tigerette plucked one on the overtime break, and Stinky jammed the 12 at the top left, giving Tigerette the 2-3 win and 2-1 series win. Ranked #8 for Accuracy, Tigerette survives this scare to host her daughter Stripes of the Terrace City Knights in the second round at this venue.
Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Wings v. Gizmo. Team Reality stays highly involved today, as we're back to 8-ball with the silver cue. Game 1 did not really stand out that much, but Central's Gizmo took the win with a cut on the 8 a few turns after a double-touch 12-11 combination to the top side with perfect caroms, leading him to a 1-0 series lead over Pearl's Wings. Game 2 ended in a flurry of activity and was over quickly, as the Surfers' Wings ran six balls early, only to be stymied by an eight-ball run-out from Gizmo, with both excelling in precision positioning and execution. Gizmo clinched the series at 2-0. Wings dazzled in game 3, responding to a four-ball run by Gizmo with an eight-ball run-out spurred by double-potting the 11 to the bottom side and 15 past the 7 at the bottom right, and followed by a two-rail kick on the 14 to the top left. Wings sneaked two more past the 7 to get the win, including the 8. Gizmo won the series 2-1, and his #88 ranked 8-ball campaign will face Valencia of the Pilots in Golden's Amazon Field Exhibition Hall in the second round.
Nissan Hall, Infinity: Whiskers v. Cowzart. The silver cue gets another dose of 8-ball. Infinity's Whiskers brought the crowd to a roar with a seven-ball run at the start, and while Pearl's Cowzart tried to rally, his defensive play eventually fell to Whiskers, who took a 1-0 series lead a couple of turns later. Game 2 had just as much of a blazing start, with the Surfers' Cowzart taking a five-ball run only to be one-upped by the Torpedoes' Whiskers running six. Things got defensive after that, but Cowzart's missed contact allowed Whiskers to pot the 8 from ball-in-hand to seal the series at 2-0. Whiskers battled a little harder with a more competitive Cowzart in game 3, emerging with the win when he left the 8 short at the top left. Whiskers swept the series 3-0, and her #6 ranked 8-ball bid hosts Lorde of the Commerce Tradewinds in the second round at this venue.
Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Puff II v. Starlight. The visitor says her eye is good today, which will help in her 9-ball series with the blue cue. Boston's Puff II earned the game 1 victory with a three-ball run-out, setting herself up to carom the cue off the 7 and drive the 9 to the bottom right to beat Pacific's Starlight for a 1-0 series lead. The Swifts' Puff II dominated the middle of game 2, running five balls and leaving the Volcanoes' Starlight with a bad angle on the 9. Starlight missed contact, and Puff II buried it to secure the series at 2-0. Puff II cruised to another victory once she gained control in game 3, smacking a five-ball run-out to earn a 3-0 series sweep. Ranked #13 for 9-ball, Puff II hosts Sleepy B. of the Archtown Arrows at this venue in the second round.
Audi Hall, Terrace City: Stripes v. Dusty. The game is still 9-ball, but the silver cue gets this series. Terrace City's Stripes took advantage of some errors by Golden's Dusty, including making a three-ball run-out to take a 1-0 series lead after Dusty missed contact on the 7. The Pilots' Dusty countered with a stronger game 2, limiting her errors as Stripes of the Knights seemed to lose a step herself. Dusty ended up with the win, banking the 8 deftly to the top left and cutting the 9 to the top side to tie the series at 1. Game 3 was a toss-up, as Dusty's long bank attempt ran out of steam near the bottom right to allow Stripes to bring the game to a close with her win, giving her the 2-1 series win. Ranked #7 for 9-ball, Stripes hosts Dustin of the Central Warriors in the second round at this venue. Dusty's loss marks the first B-level champion to be knocked out of the tournament, the sixth player eliminated. Stripes has her first kill of the season.
Intel Center, Diamond: Citrus v. Sally. The blue cue gets another series of 9-ball. Diamond's Citrus won game 1, a very back-and-forth game, and she couldn't have done it without Archtown's Sally having a lazy miss on the 8, setting Citrus up to take a 1-0 series lead with ease. The Arrows' Sally provided a lightning shot on the 4, cutting it sharply to the top left, and the carom off the ball and the rail sent it to pot the 9 at the top right for the win, tying the series at 1 against the Gems' awestruck Citrus. Sally kept flying in game 3, and she was rewarded when Citrus' bank of the 8 landed wide, allowing her to pot the last two balls to win the series 2-1. Ranked #75 for 9-ball, Sally travels to Harrison to face the Specters' Twinkie II in a second round series from Mercedes-Benz Forum.
Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Dreamy v. Spice. The blue cue stays up, but the game switches to 10-ball now. Swordpoint's Dreamy needed a scratch from Victoria's Spice late in game 1 to get herself comfortably set, and she made the last two shots from ball-in-hand to win and take a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Spice didn't know if she'd get another shot after a four-ball run early in game 2, but the Blades' Dreamy left the 10 short at the top side, and Spice tapped it in for the win to tie the series at 1. The end of game 3 came very slowly after a decent start, but Dreamy took the win, mopping up the short leave of the 10 at the bottom right from Spice. Dreamy took the series 2-1, and her #10 ranked 10-ball bid hosts Diddley of the Maplewood Lumberjacks in the second round at this venue.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Puff I v. Chicky Phil. A rivalry in the league's largest metro area will go down in Accuracy with the red cue. Westside's Chicky Phil brought one of the worst games we've ever seen in Accuracy for game 1, as Puff I didn't have to try too hard to win 2-8, gaining a 1-0 series lead with the humiliating win. Game 2 saw the Rockers' Chicky Phil melt down at the end of regulation, scratching and missing on consecutive shots to force overtime, where Puff I of the Union scratched after Chicky Phil made a ball, losing 4-5 as Chicky Phil's win tied the series at 1. Puff I played a perfect game 3, shutting things down to win 0-3 and take the series 2-1. Ranked #20 for Accuracy, Puff I hosts Bear of the Whitewater Shores in the second round at this venue.
I'm going to call this enough for today. The schedule will be shifted to feature cricket tomorrow and a full dose of pool. I'm just a tad fatigued tonight.
