UPCL Cricket - Week 25 Part 1

We're back to start week 25 of the cricket season. The current goal is to try to match calendar weeks for awhile, with maybe the occasional three league weeks in two calendar weeks. Nonetheless, this week begins in...

Subway Field, Stonebridge: Something has to give, as the Wolves close a fruitless five-game home stand against a road-weary Volcanoes side. Starlight put up a reasonable starting effort for Pacific with 471, giving them a fairly solid base to build upon. Juno replied with 253 for Stonebridge, only partially recovering from her poor pace at the start of her turn before an early exit. Ms. Kitty mostly kept herself in good positions for the Volcanoes, staying behind a deflected ball as she managed to produce 447 on her turn. Frosty tried to attack with pace, but ended up with only 168 as the Wolves fall farther behind. Leonette didn't have the most remarkable turn, going with a steady 433 for Pacific to keep their offense on track. Cobalt desperately turned to his backhand in a feeble attempt to save his turn, but his flick went the wrong way and he crashed at 211 for Stonebridge. Chicky Phil tacked on another 352 for the Volcanoes at the end, bringing their final score to 1703. Prism only handled 286 for the Wolves, making no extra effort for a comeback as they finish at 918 in the loss. Pacific roars forward to 33-17, while Stonebridge is 18-29 with the defeat.

Chevrolet Field, Everton: The Eagles return to action after a bye week, facing a Shores team looking to get a lot of wins before their second gets too fatiguing. Bear dropped off his recent road pace, grabbing 346 for Whitewater as he made a backhand play but lost his urgency to keep his turn alive. Goldy fired back with a bit of authority for Everton, slashing 610 to give them the initial lead. Twinkie III had seemingly no impact on placement of her swings, causing her to fall off at 243 for the Shores. Puff III didn't have the cleanest appearance, but she bested her sister easily with 384 for the Eagles. Marsell did enough to cover the deficit for Whitewater, lining 624 before choosing to accept the result to get the visitors back in the fight. Kirstin reclaimed the lead for Everton quite well, batting 560 to put the hosts in front again. Shaggy rallied back in a big way for the Shores, hammering 978 to give them a final score of 2191 that will challenge their hosts. Blizzard fired back with 597, just slipping up too early as the Eagles take a hard loss on 2151. Whitewater is really flying now at 22-15, while sending Everton back to 28-21 with the loss.

Apple Park, Todavía: The Stills are on the hunt for a playoff spot, and the Hummingbirds can only hope to be spoilers in this T-Line Derby. Princess went with a scoop-swing strategy, gathering a pacey 409 for Tysini until she lifted one too far and out of bounds. Easter had a critical error on her turn, ending at a pathetic 20 for Todavía after a reckless swing ended her turn early. Leandra clearly learned nothing from the turn before her, as she did the same thing and ended at 21 for the Hummingbirds. Sierra broke the curse a bit for the Stills, breaking out on 745 to give them a mid-game lead. Charli felt her swing slipping for Tysini but still tried to pick a corner, failing as she fell with 80, hurting the visitors' comeback hopes. Sparkles answered back with 487 for Todavía, helping boost their lead with a player each to go. Brownie challenged with 615 for the Hummingbirds at the end, but it still wasn't enough, as they took the loss with 1125 overall. Bells didn't make it pretty for the Stills, but her 132 iced their winning total at 1384. Todavía gets away with less than their best to go to 25-22, while Tysini falls to 18-25 after the disappointing effort.

Ebay Center, Queens: The Flames get their first game of the week, bringing in the Wolves for their one-off road game after a long home stand. Juno had a decent start with 359 for Stonebridge, enough to keep the team in a decent position early on. Crystal just pulled Queens ahead with a somewhat scattered effort from the home captain, hitting 400 for the narrow lead. Frosty accidentally bumped one with the handle of her bat, causing her abrupt exit at 105 for the Wolves. Paige didn't do much better for the Flames on her turn, picking up just 192 to give a small addition to their lead. Cobalt carved out a fairly deep run for Stonebridge on his turn, scoring 617 to give them a noticeable lead. Violetta couldn't recover for Queens at all, with a series of deflections eventually downing her at 182, leaving the hosts in a late deficit. Prism just as much left the door open for the Wolves, failing to get a touch on a ball that took her out at 36, leaving their final at 1117. Max's recent home slump persistent just enough, as the Flames veteran gave them 246 to take the loss on 1020 in a low-scoring game. Stonebridge's lucky win makes them 19-29, while Queens falls back to 26-20.

Samsung Whitewater Stadium, Whitewater: Each team has quite the battle on hand, as the Warriors' third of four straight road games comes against a fearsome Shores side. Twilight wasted no time in establishing the Central offense, posting 575 to stake out a firm lead for the visitors immediately. Bear attacked back with pace for Whitewater, erasing the deficit easily on his 586 to make it close. Dustin responded even stronger for the Warriors, lining 648 to give them a better second lead. Twinkie III continued the offensive escalation, slamming 818 to give the Shores a lead at the halfway mark. Mario failed to escalate the offense, but he did cover the deficit with his 512 for Central in a strong outing. Marsell mostly kept the Whitewater lead steady with his 487, preventing too much damage from being done against the hosts. Gizmo went for pace but didn't last long enough for the Warriors, scoring 308 to leave them on a vulnerable total of 2043. Shaggy chipped 250 for the Shores at the end, enough to seal their win at 2150. Whitewater continues to be lethal, regardless of venue, as they rise to 23-15, while knocking Central down to fourth at 31-17.

Verizon Field, Pacific: The Volcanoes have a chance to enter a tie for second, facing a feast or famine road side in the Tridents, who play the second of a three-game road trip. Precious let her swing slip a bit from its proper form, which quickly caught her at 188 in a weak opener for Pronger. Starlight attacked relentlessly with 650 for Pacific on her turn, giving the hosts a nice lead. Zach just barely covered the deficit for the Tridents with his 471, but they are still in a tough position for the game. Ms. Kitty lost a bit of ground for the Volcanoes, as her two-touch backhand was too slow, ending her turn at 295. Spot only took 208 for Pronger on his turn, squandering their chance to really damage their opponents' advantage. Leonette took advantage of the misstep, slapping a quick 497 for Pacific to pad their lead as the final players prepare to bat. Potter had only 152 for the Tridents on his turn, making this a famine road game as they end with 1019 in the loss. Chicky Phil tapped another 248 for the Volcanoes at the end, sealing their winning score at 1690. Pacific has won six straight at home to get to 34-17, while Pronger dips down to 26-21, still a healthy record.

IBM Nighthawks Nest, North Modernistic: The Nighthawks try to fight some fatigue when they bring in a Meteors side still eyeing the playoffs with this late charge. Mams got out to a quick attack for Viewpoint Sound, crisply hitting 458 with the hope that it will give them the initial lead. Peach's last hit stuck to her bat just a bit too long, causing her to send it out of play at 257 for North Modernistic. Hoot fired back with 752 for the Meteors, the big effort doing great to extend their lead in the second attack. Luigi answered with 368 for the Nighthawks, a reasonable performance but not enough to actually help the hosts. Nibbles did well for Viewpoint Sound in a supplementary role, supplying 451 to their offense to keep the lead intact. Cheddar belted 1057 for North Modernistic on her turn, surprisingly covering the deficit to set up an interesting finish between the teams. Dominic rattled off 472 for the Meteors, closing their offensive effort at 2133 total. Bright let the comeback go to waste, hitting a ball into his wicket to cut his turn off at 115 for the Nighthawks, which left them with 1797 in the loss. Viewpoint Sound jumps to 18-21, while North Modernistic slides to 26-26.

Nissan Infinity Stadium, Infinity: The Torpedoes have been on the rise lately, and they host a Tradewinds team in a bit of a decline in recent games. Tigerette wanted to come out setting the tone for Commerce, but she fell flat with a weak pace at 158 in a poor first turn for the visitors. Smudge had a bit of a slow pace at first too, but she persisted to score 632 for Infinity at the start of the game. Ice Cream had a fine turn going for the Tradewinds, but she suddenly lost her form and crashed at 363. Solaris allowed the Torpedoes lead to weaken when a deflection took him out at 176. Lionel saved the day for Commerce, at least for now, by striking 710 to give them a large lead. Whiskers battled distractions and unlucky deflections on her turn, only grabbing 282 as Infinity falls just behind with a player each to go. Lorde also suffered a deflection for the Tradewinds, giving her only 115 to put the visitors at 1346 overall, a vulnerable mark. Mr. Snowman provided the critical final push for the Torpedoes with 529, setting their winning final at 1619. Infinity gets a hard-fought win to jump to 28-19, while Commerce falls to 21-30 with the loss.

Starbucks Cup, Archtown: The Arrows play their fourth of six straight at home against the Meteors, in their third of five straight on the road, in a critical battle for the bubble. Mams pulled in a massive performance at the start for Viewpoint Sound with 833, setting a sharp tone early on. Sally did better than just about anyone expected in response, with 778 for Archtown to keep the game close so far. Hoot had a great pace going for the Meteors, but he mishandled one of his swings and ended with 272. Sleepy B. shot back with 659 for the Arrows, giving the hosts a nice lead at the midway mark. Nibbles covered the deficit for Viewpoint Sound with a quick 546, but they are not out of trouble quite yet. Ruby lost a bit of the lead for Archtown with her 387, but they hold the advantage going into the final players' turns. Dominic gave the Meteors a fighting chance with his 384 leaving them at 2035 total. Dusky squeaked by with 326 for the Arrows in the end, setting their final at 2150. Archtown gets the all-important win to go to 28-26, while Viewpoint Sound slides down to 18-22.

Google Pitch at Union Ground, Modernistic: The Union try to get a bit farther up the standings by hosting a Hummingbirds team just hanging on for life at this point. Princess had a fairly reasonable performance at the start for Tysini, putting up 392 on the opening turn. Ms. Puppy wasted no time with her response for Modernistic, belting 973 to give them a significant lead after the first turn. Leandra shot back with a crisp turn of her own for the Hummingbirds, covering the deficit with her 705. Daisy did her part for the Union, keeping them in front at the halfway mark with 624 in a strong appearance. Charli barely managed to cover the deficit for Tysini this time, flipping a good 520 to do so. Puff I showed no mercy on her counterattack, propelling Modernistic far ahead with a massive 1035 that should just about secure the game. Brownie melted under pressure with just 78 for the Hummingbirds, leaving them at a losing total of 1695. Strawberry capped the performance with 542 for the Union, a solid mark to place them at 3174 in a big win. Modernistic is a dark horse with momentum as they reach 22-23, while Tysini drops back to 18-26 as the week gets worse for them.

Kraft Crowns Park, Royal: The Castle Derby is here, as this Southeast Divisional puts the Crowns to the test against their successful neighbors. Crystal swatted 519 for Queens on the first turn of the game, establishing their offense in a good way early on. Nightfur didn't have anywhere near the same pace or purpose on her turn, taking only 147 for Royal as they start from a familiar trailing position. Paige countered with 759 for the Flames, the big second attack padding their lead quite well. Jake didn't inspire much confidence for the Crowns on his turn, picking up a simple 208 to deepen the deficit. Violetta looked to be going for pace for Queens, but she steered one hit too high and ended at 288 for the visitors, a decent effort. Kayla made an absolute mess of her turn for Royal, hitting a measly 25 as they have virtually no hope of a comeback now. Max accepted 483 for the Flames at the end of his turn, avoiding a replay for a technical error and producing their strong final of 2049. Hannah had a feeble attempt at a rally for the Crowns, but her 231 left them well short at 611 total. Queens took the easy win to get to 27-20, while Royal falls once again to 14-33.

Cisco Tysini Field, Tysini: Both teams break out their third jerseys for this segment finale game that could get a bit lopsided. Goldy lacked pace at first for Everton, then recovered a bit to post a respectable 368 to lead things off. Princess had a confident attack going for Tysini for awhile, but she let a ball slip and ended at 336, leaving them trailing slightly early in the game. Puff III answered back with a bit more intent, slicing her way to 569 for the Eagles to give them a more stable lead. Leandra had a decent response, hitting 352 for the Hummingbirds, but they are behind at the midway mark. Kirstin saw hesitation become her downfall for Everton, as one lapse turned into a cluttered pitch and helped take her down at 189. Charli had no trouble in covering the deficit for Tysini, smacking 553 to give them an edge as the final players take their turns. Blizzard forced a response from the hosts, popping 577 for the Eagles to set their final score at 1703. Brownie struggled a bit too much with pace, her 135 leaving the Hummingbirds short at 1376. Everton escapes with a gritty win to get to 29-21, while Tysini drops back to 18-27.

That's all for this segment. We'll have more tonight; if not published, then at least on Twitter @UnitedPCL.
