A spot of time has opened up, so we'll put in Hutton Cup games likely twice over the weekend. We begin with...
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The Swifts lead off the Hutton Cup with Sweetheart on the bench, while the visiting Prestige will have Waluigi on the bench in game 1. Acorn led off at a solid pace, but his turn didn't last all that long with 346 for Lighton to get things going. Patches carved out 663 for Boston on the counterattack, putting Boston ahead right away. Spirit countered with 355 for the Prestige, enough to lightly cover the deficit on this second attack. Puff II essentially doubled the Swifts offense as she slammed 697, restoring their lead and then some at the midway mark of the game. Katelynn melted at 57 for Lighton, not even coming close to matching the deficit. Gradley tacked on 662 for Boston, electing to skip an optional replay after a ball clipped the boundary. Nicole grabbed 454 for the Prestige at the end, staking her claim to a starting spot despite the team losing at 1212. Ice Cream had a rocky 32 for the Swifts, who won anyway on a total of 2054. Boston leads the series 1-0 after a dominant first game.
BMW RockDome, Westside: Two teams with a bitter history renew their rivalry in the first round, with Midnight and Missy sitting out game 1 for the Rockers and Sharpshooters, respectively. Chris produced a decent 296 for Capital City to begin the game, although the visitors are far from safe. Misty answered with 391 for Westside, enough to give them a small lead after the first turn. Sprinkles faltered at 231 for the Sharpshooters, unable to find a better rhythm on her turn. Goatee slipped at 176 for the Rockers, damaging their lead in a gritty first half of game 1. Lorde broke out a bit with 544 for Capital City, giving the visitors their most confident lead of the game. Slinks couldn't counter it with 264 for Westside, giving them a noticeable deficit with a player each to go. Pauline didn't cancel that out, hitting 231 as the Sharpshooters end a little vulnerable at 1302. Cowzart had a good look at making the comeback, but a slump late in the turn ended him at 341, leaving the Rockers short at 1172. Capital City has taken a game on the road, leading the series at 1-0.
Amazon Field, Golden: The Pilots are ready to begin their series after getting last week off, with A. Charlton taking the bench. The Cascades sit Stripes for game 1 due to a poor road average this year. Jasmine started with pace for Freedom, but some awkward swings caused her to drop at 305. Valencia showed a bit of quality with 544 for Golden, missing a high ball at the end of the turn. Stinky had a hitch in his swing for the Cascades, ending rather early at just 66 points. Dusty tapped 456 after a couple of false starts, extending the Pilots' lead pretty well. Roxy looked promising at first but crumbled against good bowling, giving Freedom another middling 220. Strut had to replay his turn after a never-before-seen technical issue, and he had 351 to add a little more to Golden's lead. Nikolai got knocked down at 80 for the Cascades, who took a brutal loss at 671. Sparkles nearly did all of the opponents' offense on her own, slashing 670 to give the Pilots a win on 2021. Golden easily earned the 1-0 series lead.
Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: The Warriors' Noelle and the Torpedoes' Shelley both played pool yesterday against Lumberjacks opponents, and will sit out game 1 despite the short travel. Smudge put up 304 for Infinity in an alright first turn, but they'll be vulnerable initially. Twilight had a bad swing too early in her turn for Central, falling at a measly 60 on their first attack. Fluffina poked 299 for the Torpedoes, still unable to find a definitive attacking mode. Dustin got a bit of it back with 433 for the Warriors, but neither team has connected on a game-changing turn yet. Infinity's Solaris also experienced the technical issue, and his replay only netted 289, keeping the visitors narrowly ahead. Mario had to do a replay as well, and this greatly benefited Central, as the sophomore belted 1301 to put them firmly ahead late in the game. Mr. Snowman fell at 367 for the Torpedoes, leaving them in a tough and controversial loss at 1259. Wings made a quick exit at 128 for the Warriors, giving them 1922 overall in a big win. Central is happy to have a 1-0 series lead.
Samsung Whitewater Stadium, Whitewater: The Shores may have their hands full with Marsell on the bench, while the Pirates look to make some noise while sitting Max for game 1. Delila let a ball bounce over her bat, a poor decision that stalled her offense at 162 for Atlantic. Bear's rough season continued with just 39 points for Whitewater in their playoff debut. Isabella had a good save on her backhand for the Pirates, carving out 847 to give them a much stronger lead. Twinkie III couldn't play a deflection right next to her bat, ending at 392 as the Shores slip behind. Steven answered with 438 for Atlantic in a solid response turn for the visitors. Katharine couldn't keep up with 225 for Whitewater, causing the deficit to grow again. Klaus had a bad turn with 147 for the Pirates, capping their offense at 1594. Shaggy went on a rally with 546 for the Shores, but she came up short as their total sat at 1202. Atlantic has a 1-0 series lead in a relatively low-scoring start to the series.
Blades Fusion ProGlide Park, Swordpoint: The Blades are without Dreamy, a critical piece of their offense, while the Defenders sit Hughbert for this game 1. Bianca started with a great pace, but couldn't sustain the effort for Southridge, dropping at 258. Snowball almost covered the damage for Swordpoint, but she had just 252 on another mediocre starting effort. Debby showed some veteran savvy with 936 for the Defenders, pummeling hard to earn the lead for the visitors. Bandit fired back with an even better 1053 for the Blades, giving them a small lead at the halfway point. Stephanie covered the deficit with 192 for Southridge, but they are not safe yet. Stealth poked 272 for Swordpoint on his turn, giving them a bit more of a lead heading into the final players' turns. Caitlin gained 257 for the Defenders, putting them at a total of 1643. Jason N. met the challenge with 457 for the Blades at the end, capping their win at 2034. Swordpoint takes a 1-0 series lead after the competitive game.
Chevrolet Field, Everton: The Eagles want Kirstin on the bench for the first game, attempting to capitalize on the Crowns being forced to rest their star Kayla to open the series. Jake flicked 512 for Royal to get things going, a productive outing for the temporary lead-off man. Goldy crumbled at 136 for Everton, never quite getting her rhythm in check on the first turn. Jeremias kept up his good play from the regular season in hitting 608 for the Crowns to supplement their attack. Puff III could not get the Eagles back into the game, falling at 291 in a middling performance. Nightfur countered with 433, keeping Royal in firm control of the game with another good outing. Cleo rallied with 519 for Everton, making a small dent in the rather large deficit late in the game. Cassie tapped 384 to ice the Crowns offense at a final score of 1937. Blizzard collapsed at 117 for the Eagles, unable to challenge for the game with a losing total of 1063. Royal looked impressive in the win, taking a 1-0 series lead.
HP Field, Midland: The Predators and Hummingbirds each go with their strongest venue-specific lineup, as Fuchsia sits for the hosts and Paps takes a bench role for the visitors. Princess took only 173 for Tysini, a brutal deflection downing her early in the appearance. Shawn had a good pace going before a bad swing cut him down at 272 to mitigate the Midland advantage. Leandra covered the deficit with 264 for the Hummingbirds, unable to avoid deflections on her clearances until one finally stopped her. Rainmane added a little more to the Predators lead with 304, although both teams are vulnerable to a big attack right now. Charli went with 599 for Tysini to prove that point, giving the visitors a significant lead. Leonardo didn't match it by any means with 129 for Midland, putting them behind late in the game. Brownie didn't get as much as she wanted with 276 for the Hummingbirds, leaving them at a total of 1312. Americus did just enough with 616 to snatch the win for the Predators, on a final score of 1321. Midland leads the series 1-0 after a crazy finish to the first game.
Each series has a direction now, with Game 1 finished. Game 2 will be played this afternoon, while Tournament will wait until Monday to return, as expected.
