After a productive weekend managing cricket data, we're back for Tournament action beginning this afternoon. First up...
BMW RockDome, Westside: Slinks v. Strawberry. The silver cue gets the first series today, playing 7-ball. Westside's Slinks needed only three shots to claim game 1 for herself, making the 4 on the break, then getting deflections to put the 3 in the top left before intentionally deflecting the cue off the 1 to pot the 7 in the bottom side. Slinks holds a 1-0 series lead over Victoria's Strawberry. The Rockers' Slinks made a pair of balls on the game 2 break and added the 1 early on, followed by the Spurs' Strawberry doing a three-ball run. Strawberry narrowly missed on the 7, and Slinks tapped it into the bottom left to secure the series at 2-0 with this win. Slinks couldn't get her offense going in the same way in game 3, faltering until Strawberry made four balls over her last two turns to get the win. Slinks took the series 2-1, and will host the Everton Eagles' Puff III in the third round.
Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Jason N. v. Mario. The blue cue is given the start for a 12-ball series in today's second match. Both players started slowly in game 1, but Central's Mario had good positioning when he claimed stripes. Mario had a three-ball run, and capitalized on a lack of precision from Swordpoint's Jason to get the win. Mario leads the series 1-0. The Warriors' Mario started slowly again in game 2, but set up a defensive presence at two pockets. The Blades' Jason broke the defense once, but couldn't do it twice, and Mario made his last two balls with ease for the win. Mario clinched the series at 2-0. Mario picked up only a little bit of the offense in game 3, as Jason did better in executing his shots. Jason did have to overcome a scratch, but he did so cleanly to gather the win in the end. Mario had a 2-1 series win, moving along to the third round.
GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Stephanie Livilotti v. Ms. Puppy. The blue cue stays on for this series of 10-ball. Southridge's Stephanie had some unfortunate shots in game 1, including a scratch on the 7. The 10 proved hard to corral, as it took until Ms. Puppy's third try for the Modernistic captain to get the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Defenders' Stephanie had an excellent response in game 2, working a five-ball run-out on her first turn to get into position and convert a 4-10 combination to the bottom right. The smart plays tied the series at 1. Stephanie and Ms. Puppy continued to battle evenly throughout game 3, neither player really taking control until Stephanie made a three-ball run-out for the win. Stephanie's late surge gave her a 2-1 series win to put her into the third round.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Ms. Puppy v. Kirstin. The host completes a personal doubleheader with the silver cue in Rotation. Modernistic's Ms. Puppy had a pair of balls on the break and never looked back, building a huge lead before Everton's Kirstin potted a ball. A slower finish still saw Ms. Puppy take the win 8-2 to give her a 1-0 series lead early on. The Union's Ms. Puppy maintained an early lead in game 2, but couldn't build on it toward the end. This slow stretch of the game ended as the Eagles' Kirstin compiled a six-ball run-out for the 8-5 win to tie the series at 1. Kirstin blitzed Ms. Puppy on the game 3 break, creating a six-ball run for a massive lead early on. Ms. Puppy slowly chipped her way back into the game, but couldn't cover the initial damage before Kirstin made a late bank on the 12 to the bottom side for the 8-5 win. Kirstin takes the series 2-1 to go to the third round.
Chevrolet Center, Everton: Cleo v. Nikolai. Two strong but inexperienced players collide in 9-ball with the blue cue. Everton's Cleo had a decent start in game 1, but Freedom's Nikolai stayed close. Nikolai double-potted the 6 and 8 to the bottom side with a lucky bounce, but missed on the 7, and Cleo took the last two shots for the win and a 1-0 lead in the series. The Eagles' Cleo didn't get off to an immediately brilliant start in game 2, but after the Cascades' Nikolai missed on the 1, Cleo erupted for an eight-ball run-out to grab the win and secure the series at 2-0. Nikolai took a defensive approach to managing Cleo in game 3, which worked out fine until he scratched on the 4. Cleo made the 4 and then a 5-9 combination to the top side to earn the 3-0 series sweep. Cleo will be the host in her third round series.
AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Jason V. v. Chimpy. The silver cue returns to action for some 15-ball in the first half of a venue doubleheader. Oceanside's Jason struggled to find his offense early in the game, but he did well late. Modernistic's Chimpy couldn't piece together a late run at all, opening things up for Jason to take game 1 on a pair of late shots for the 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Jason had a much stronger start in game 2, coupled with a lot of errors from the Union's Chimpy. Jason took things slow at the end but still earned the win as Chimpy failed to find his shot enough to make a difference. Jason secured the series at 2-0. Game 3 saw neither player take control of the table. Jason had the better play early on, but the second half was poor on both sides, requiring a lucky deflection by Chimpy to get the win and avoid the sweep. Jason still won the series 2-1, advancing into a hosting position for his third round series.
AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Dewey v. Bandit. The venue doubleheader ends with 9-ball and the blue cue. Oceanside's Dewey had a three-ball run early in game 1 and carried the offense for most of the game, but Swordpoint's Bandit set himself up by banking the 8 to the top right and then cutting the 9 to the same pocket for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Blades' Bandit didn't do much early in game 2, and things looked bad for the visitor when the Waves' Dewey worked a four-ball run in the middle of the game. Dewey couldn't pot the 8 on a jump attempt, giving Bandit a chance to make the last two balls, which he did for the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Game 3 saw a renewed confidence from Bandit, who made a three-ball run at one point, but Dewey took the win with the last three balls spread over two turns. Bandit won the series 2-1, and he will visit the Maplewood Lumberjacks' Summer in the third round.
Apple Center, Todavía: Anton v. Misty. A rookie faces a confident captain in 10-ball, as the silver cue plays its last series today. Westside's Misty quickly took over game 1 with force, using a nine-ball run-out to grab a massive win over Todavía's Anton. Misty currently leads the series 1-0. The Rockers' Misty had a good break in game 2, but her 1-10 combination attempt to the top right on the second shot failed. The Stills' Anton converted the same combination to the same spot on his first and only shot, tying the series at 1 to make things interesting with the trick play win. Game 3 saw both players work a three-ball run to keep the offense balanced. Misty had a chance to get another run late, but she couldn't make the 9, and Anton stepped up for the last two balls to get the win and the 2-1 series win. Anton will be the host in the third round series.
Intel Center, Diamond: Rosalina v. Chelsea. An Eastern Hills Derby brings the red cue back into action for 7-ball. Diamond's Rosalina won game 1 with a single shot, drilling the break to put the 7 in the bottom right corner. Rosalina leads the series 1-0 over Eastside's Chelsea, who could only watch as she took the loss. The Sharks' Chelsea got a chance to shoot in game 2, and dominated possession with an early three-ball run and some more shots later. Chelsea had made it more difficult to get the win, but Rosalina missed a long shot on the 7, and Chelsea buried it on the second try to tie the series at 1 game apiece. Chelsea had a number of chances at a combination with the 7 in game 3, while Rosalina couldn't even make a straight shot, let alone anything fancier. Chelsea eventually converted a 2-7 combination to the bottom right for the win and the 2-1 series win. Chelsea is into the third round.
AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Josie v. Leonette. The blue cue takes its last turn today in a Coastal rivalry of 7-ball. Oceanside's Josie showed her quality in game 1, starting with a three-ball run and then beating Pacific's Leonette late with the last pair of balls. Josie's strong finish gave her the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Josie did practically everything in game 2, making a five-ball run from the break and then using ball-in-hand after the Volcanoes' Leonette scratched to pick up the last two balls. Josie's dominant effort clinched the series at 2-0 in her favor. Josie dominated in a different way in game 3, never letting Leonette get a shot as the 7 found the top side on the break. Josie's perfect finishing shot secured the series sweep at 3-0, and she will advance to the third round.
Home Depot Forum, Web City: Shiny v. Beth. The red cue will close the day with two series, the first in 15-ball. Neither player could make much of a run in game 1 until Web City's Shiny strung together four straight near the end. Shiny's bank on the 15 failed her, and Pearl's Beth stepped up to take the final ball at the top side for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Beth had some struggles with scratches in game 2, while the Spiders' Shiny had a mid-game highlight of a jump-cut on the 3 to the bottom side. Toward the end of the game, Beth made a three-ball run, but left the 15 at the top right, and Shiny kicked it in cleanly to tie the series at 1 with her win. Beth put her all into game 3, with a four-ball run and a three-ball run to carry the game through the middle. Beth made a mistake trying to get onto the 14, and Shiny capitalized, taking the last two balls to get the win and a 2-1 series win. Shiny with host North Modernistic Nighthawks sophomore Luigi in the third round.
BMW RockDome, Westside: Slinks v. Strut. Two tenured veterans clash in today's final series, 8-ball with the red cue. Westside's Slinks made a five-ball run on the break of game 1 and then went cold from there, allowing Golden's Strut to get ahead with a five-ball run of his own. The drag-race finish saw Slinks do a bit better, earning the win with a small cut on the 8 to the top right for a 1-0 series lead. The Rockers' Slinks couldn't pull off a similar effort in game 2, falling flat on the break. The Pilots' Strut pulled in a nice run before a scratch, and then ended with a four-ball run-out on a second surge to grab the win. Strut's win tied the series at 1. Slinks had a nice four-ball run on her first turn of game 3, but Strut answered back with seven straight shots. Strut would have had the win, but he put too much juice on his shot on the 8, and he scratched to gift Slinks the win and the 2-1 series win. Slinks gets by with some luck, advancing to the third round.
That's all for the league today. Due to a busy upcoming week, I'm unsure of when exactly or at what pace the Hutton Cup will commence.
