Select Cricket 2018 - Week 22

The United Cup is over, leaving just one week left in the regular season prior to the Hutton Cup Playoffs. Select has one spot up for grabs, as well as some positional jockeying to do, beginning with...

UPS Ground, Maplewood: The Lumberjacks return from United Cup play with Gabe resting after a pool appearance, while the Spurs bench a struggling Wario in this game. Spice saw a deflection cut her down at 147 for Victoria, as she was unable to get much of a pace going. Whiskers couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, hitting a measly 112 for Maplewood to start off. Yekaterina got the offense going with 674 for the Spurs, a strong output on the second attack. Diddley got beat on a deflection that stalled him at 248 for the Lumberjacks. Sage made a huge impact with 1168 for Victoria, extending their lead greatly with a massive turn. Bryant buckled under pressure at 39 points for Maplewood, making a comeback nearly impossible late in the game. Strawberry tallied 512 for the Spurs at the end, capping their offense at 2501 in an almost guaranteed win. Summer mishandled a ball on her backhand, falling with a pathetic 52 for the Lumberjacks, who crumbled at 451 overall. Victoria's massive win takes them to 19-22, while Maplewood drops to 21-22 with the loss.

Mercedes-Benz Field, Harrison: The Specters go without Mitchell in their home finale, while the Cascades' battle for the league lead will go on without Roxy in this game. Freedom had 609 from Jasmine on the opening turn, giving them a stable start to the game. Sydney double-tapped a ball and ended her turn with 51 for Harrison, putting them far behind at the start. Stinky couldn't get a bouncing ball under control, falling with a measly 40 for the Cascades. Twinkie II tried to place a ball but missed her mark, taking just 159 as the Specters struggle to create offense. Nikolai dug up 555 for Freedom, strengthening their lead after last turn's panic on both sides. Lexi chipped 283 for Harrison, struggling to find her form against some aggressive bowling by the visitors. Stripes had a mediocre 232 for the Cascades, closing their offense at 1436 in total. Rudolph misplayed a ball and fell at 177 for the Specters, leaving them in a loss with a poor total of 670. Freedom jumps to 30-13, 16-6 on the road, while Harrison slides to 16-27, having gone 10-12 at home this year.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Specters end their season with Lexi on the bench in this road game, while the Wolves try to keep the fight for 10th place alive with Vladimir on the bench. Sydney crashed out at 249 for Harrison in an underwhelming start to the scoring. Juno blasted 1025 right at the start for Stonebridge, putting them far ahead with the fantastic appearance. Twinkie II teed up a swing and ended up seeing it deflect out of play to down her at just 16 for the sinking Specters. Frosty countered with 609 for the Wolves on their second attack, padding the lead significantly. Rudolph played well with 487 for Harrison, but it's likely just window dressing for the visitors. Hershey piled on with 799 for Stonebridge this time, growing the lead once again. Mitchell ended the Specters' road season with 113, leaving them in a loss at 865 for a 6-16 road record. Cobalt brought the game to a quick end with 50 points, the Wolves winning on a final score of 2483. Stonebridge goes to 16-27, needing a win to take 10th place outright from the 16-28 Harrison team.

Toyota Pitch, Freedom: The Cascades have a chance to make things uncomfortable at the top, sitting Stripes in their season finale, while the Spurs bench their captain Spice in a critical game for their dim playoff hopes. Yekaterina looked good early on for Victoria, taking 521 to begin the game. A high-arcing ball took Jasmine out at only 69 for Freedom, giving them a deficit to work out of. Sage went even bigger for the Spurs on the second attack, her 846 padding the lead quite nicely. Stinky managed a middling 271 for the Cascades this time, not helping them to get back into the game. Wario had an ugly 131 for Victoria, weakening their lead a little bit with the bad showing. Nikolai made a little progress with 384 for Freedom, but they've got a long way to go on the final turn. Strawberry did poorly as well with 160 for the Spurs, leaving them at a final score of 1658. Stripes had a good pace going, but a bad swing dropped her at 345, leaving the Cascades in a loss with 1069. Victoria rises again to 20-22, while Freedom is down to 30-14, including a 14-8 home record as it looks likely they will take third place in Select.

UPS Ground, Maplewood: The Lumberjacks sit their rookie Summer in a must-win game, while the Prestige begin their busy week with Waluigi on the bench. Acorn had a pacey start with 506 for Lighton, giving them something to build on later in the game. Whiskers dropped at 69 for Maplewood, the fight seemingly evaporating from the hosts already as they're faced with the challenge. Spirit had a more cautious turn with 401 for the Prestige, adding to their already-large lead. Diddley found himself out of position when his turn ended at 186 points for the Lumberjacks. Katelynn countered it with 193 for Lighton, who are feeling more comfortable with their lead. Bryant gathered 885 for Maplewood, striking back just in time to set up an interesting finish. Nicole fired back with 512 for the Prestige, bringing them to a final score of 1612. Gabe came up short at 235 for the Lumberjacks, leaving them with 1375 in the loss and a 10-12 home record. Lighton is up to 22-19, with a road record of 13-9, while Maplewood ends the year at 21-23, outside of the Hutton Cup picture.

GE Stadium, Southridge: The Defenders will be without Bianca in their regular season finale, while the Meteors are without Vincent in all four games this week due to his developmental loan. Mams had a strong 546 for Viewpoint Sound on the opening turn, giving them a good lead early on. Debby fired back with 752 for Southridge, a much pacier turn lifting the hosts into the lead. Hoot had a rough turn for the Meteors on the second attack, taking a poor 20 points. Stephanie had a simple 304 for the Defenders, adding a little more to their lead midway through the game. Nibbles had a rough start to his turn for Viewpoint Sound, but rounded into form at 637 to put them ahead. Caitlin flicked 241 for Southridge in response, setting up a close finish for the final players to decide. Dani provided 478 for the Meteors at the end, capping their offense at 1681. Hughbert made a mess at the end with 187 for the Defenders, leaving them with 1484 in the loss. Viewpoint Sound gets a surprise win to rise to 18-23, while Southridge takes a massive loss down to 31-13, ending their home schedule at 17-5.

Pepsi Prestige Park, Lighton: Southwestern rivals do battle, with the Prestige looking to lock up fourth place while the Spurs try to prevent it. Katelynn sits for the hosts, while Strawberry does the same for the visitors. Spice went off with 880 for Victoria on their first turn, a great outing for the captain. Acorn tried to go at a high pace, but he clipped the boundary and ended with 378 for Lighton. Yekaterina covered that damage with 400 for the Spurs, keeping the visitors ahead. Spirit collapsed at a pathetic 76 for the Prestige, unable to fight off the pressure facing her side. Sage faded with 250 for Victoria on this turn, but they are not in danger of falling behind. Nicole made a fierce attack with 626 for Lighton, closing the gap a bit before the final players' turns. Wario went with 368 for the Spurs against his brother's team, closing their offense at 1898. Waluigi blasted 1009 for the Prestige, his best effort of the season giving them the win on 2089. Lighton is up to 23-19, safely in the playoffs, while Victoria drops to 20-23, with an 11-11 road mark.

Pepsi Prestige Park, Lighton: The Prestige change jerseys and rest Spirit with their playoff spot confirmed, while the Crowns fight for first place with Kayla on the bench in the first game of their doubleheader. Jake pounded 679 for Royal at the start, pacing their attack well early on. Acorn answered with 575 for Lighton, keeping things close initially with his good turn. Jeremias dished out 478 for the Crowns on his turn, keeping their lead formidable. Katelynn canceled that out with 478 of her own for the Prestige, keeping the deficit level at the midway point. Nightfur took a stumble at 128 for Royal, unable to boost their lead with the poor appearance. Nicole let them off the hook with 135 for Lighton, making only minimal progress against the deficit late in the game. Cassie found herself quickly under siege, and while she held on at first, she fell with 281 to give the Crowns a total of 1566. Waluigi returned to poor form with 145 for the Prestige here, letting them lose with a total of 1333. Royal is up to 31-12 on the year, just a win away from taking the league title, while Lighton eases back to 23-20.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: Only one team can get what it wants, as the visiting Crowns end a doubleheader with Cassie on the bench, while the host Wolves sit Cobalt for performance. Kayla had a sloppy start with only 194 for Royal on their opening turn. Juno wasn't much better with 233 for Stonebridge, giving the hosts a small lead at the start. Jake gave the Crowns a much stronger second look at the lead with his 915, a great performance from the reliable veteran. Frosty kept the game close with 888 for the Wolves, which has it nearly tied at the midway mark. Jeremias picked up 323 for Royal, potentially leaving them a bit exposed. Hershey lost his rhythm in the middle of his game, floundering to 202 for Stonebridge as the hosts have fallen behind. Nightfur failed to secure the game with only 231 for the Crowns, their final score resting at 1663. Vladimir made a desperate save on his backhand, but the next offering beat him at 60 points, leaving the Wolves in a loss with 1383. Royal pulls off the full rally, rising to 32-12 for first place including a road record of 14-8, while Stonebridge sinks to 16-28 with a home record of 8-14. Stonebridge takes 10th place from the Specters on points in a split 2-2 season series.

Sprint Pitch, Victoria: The Spurs look for one more win with Sage resting, while the visiting Meteors begin a road tripleheader to end the year, with Vincent sitting out each game. Mams clubbed 480 for Viewpoint Sound to get started in the first game of their end of season blitz. Spice picked up 189 for Victoria at the start, a slow beginning for the higher-ranked team. Hoot tacked on another 480 for the Meteors on the second attack, extending their lead nicely. Yekaterina covered the deficit with 904 for the Spurs, the pacey attack helping them remain competitive. Nibbles replied with 456 for Viewpoint Sound, keeping their offense consistent and strong. Wario fired back with 727 for Victoria in a firm counterattack to put the hosts ahead with a player each to go. Dani produced 455 for the Meteors at the end, their offense closing with 1871 overall. Strawberry laced 534 for the Spurs to secure the win at a total of 2354. Victoria went 10-12 at home and 21-23 overall, while Viewpoint Sound dips to 18-24.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Meteors continue their season-ending tripleheader in the east, while the Sharks' finale has them without their captain Graham. Mams led off with a massive 825 for Viewpoint Sound this time, a productive effort to keep their morale high. Chelsea had a reasonable 339 for Eastside in response, giving them a hill to climb early on. Hoot hit 572 for the Meteors on the second attack, another good turn to pad their lead in excellent form. Gizmo cancelled out most of that damage with 552 for the Sharks, although the hosts remain noticeably behind at the halfway mark. Nibbles shelved another 648 for Viewpoint Sound, keeping their attack dangerous once more. Cubby dropped off the pace at 466 for Eastside, unable to keep up with a surprisingly vicious attack from the visitors. Dani slipped up at 202 for the Meteors, setting their final score at 2247. Salmo picked up 295 for the Sharks, far from enough to save them from losing at 1652. Viewpoint Sound bounces back to 19-24, while Eastside drops to 10-12 at home and 21-23 overall, in a three-way tie for fifth. The tie is broken with the Sharks falling to 7th (1-7 versus Maplewood and Victoria), the Lumberjacks going to 6th (5-3 versus Eastside and Victoria), and the Spurs taking 5th (6-2 versus Eastside and Maplewood).

Pepsi Prestige Park, Lighton: Select's regular season ends here, with the Meteors completing a tripleheader against a Prestige team resting Acorn after a busy week. Mams established Viewpoint Sound quickly with 631 on the opening attack. Spirit had a more chaotic turn for Lighton, but managed to put them just slightly ahead with 639. Hoot shot back with 643 for the Meteors, continuing to raise the stakes on offense. Katelynn faltered with a meager 80 points for the Prestige on their second attack, allowing the visitors to jump far ahead. Nibbles dropped at 76 for Viewpoint Sound, a rare misstep from the reliable sophomore. Nicole mishit a ball to end abruptly at 207 for Lighton, unable to cover the deficit this time. Dani fell with a measly 88 for the Meteors, capping their offense at 1438, a vulnerable mark for now. Waluigi couldn't make the rally with 223 for the Prestige, leaving them in a loss at 1149. Viewpoint Sound goes to 20-24 in a tie for eighth, finishing at 11-11 on the road, while Lighton is 23-21 with a 10-12 home record. The tiebreaker sees the Southern Monarchs take 8th place, having beaten the Meteors three out of four times.

Select is done, with one last Team of the Week to be named on Twitter @UnitedPCL shortly. Tournament action resumes in the afternoon, and Elite will begin week 22 tomorrow.
