Tournament 2018 - Round 2 Day 8

We're back for an earlier session of pool today to account for personal activities later in the day. We begin with...

Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Nibbles v. Daisy. Two sophomore are set to meet in 7-ball with the blue cue in the first series of the day. Modernistic's Daisy had a six-ball run on her first turn of game 1, but she also missed a pair of shot attempts on the 7, leaving it as a tap-in for Viewpoint Sound's Nibbles, who took a 1-0 series lead with the stroke of luck. The Meteors' Nibbles had a more involved role in game 2, making a lot of balls scattered over many turns. The Union's Daisy was not as sharp this time, and Nibbles capitalized on this at the end to make the last two balls for the win, clinching the series at 2-0. Nibbles maintained a strong presence on offense in game 3, winning with a three-ball run-out as Daisy couldn't quite figure out her shots this time. Nibbles ended the series with a 3-0 sweep, moving him into the third round.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Kodiak v. Isabella. The blue cue remains in action for 8-ball between more inexperienced players. Modernistic's Kodiak shot well in game 1, at times being a bit too generous when he double-potted two of the stripes for Atlantic's Isabella. Kodiak held on, as Isabella couldn't build any offense of her own, and Kodiak made the 8 to the top side for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Union's Kodiak came up big at the start of game 2, making one of each and choosing solids for himself. The Pirates' Isabella had a delayed response, but when she attacked, she won on a five-ball run-out, tying the series at 1. Game 3 saw Isabella come out hot from the break, keeping her attack strong in the early going. Isabella faltered toward the end of the game, allowing Kodiak to use a pair of four-ball runs to snag the win and the 2-1 series win. Kodiak will play on into the third round.

McDonald's Hall, Atlantic: Delila v. Starlight. A captains' battle takes place in 15-ball, also with the blue cue. Atlantic's Delila had to watch in game 1 as Pacific's Starlight started with a five-ball run and then poked in the 15 at the end to negate Delila's strong offense after that first run. Starlight leads the series at 1-0. The Volcanoes' Starlight spread her offense out more during game 2, although an early four-ball run was the highlight. The Pirates' Delila had a couple of misses on the 15 at the end that cost her the series, as Starlight made it on her second try to clinch the series at 2-0. Delila had a much more dominant showing in game 3, picking up all of the big runs including her five-ball run-out to get the win. Starlight still claimed the series 2-1, and will be on the road again in the third round.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Leonardo v. Mams. A mildly threatening veteran meets a captain in Accuracy with the silver cue. Game 1 did not go very well for either player, but Midland's Leonardo held onto the early lead well. Viewpoint Sound's Mams was an absolute disaster, allowing Leonardo to win 5-9 despite the host lacking quality in his shots. Leonardo owns a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Leonardo scratched on the break in game 2, but it managed to work out for him, giving him the last shot advantage. The Meteors' Mams had multiple chances to secure a lead but failed each time, and then missed her overtime break. Leonardo stepped in to take the 3-4 win her, sealing the series at 2-0. Leonardo had a good break in game 3, but stumbled early on, and Mams held onto the lead without looking back, eventually winning the game 3-4. Leonardo took the series 2-1, and will host his series in the third round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Sugar v. Josie. The red cue takes over after a lunch break, playing Accuracy. Web City's Sugar fell behind a few times in game 1, but managed to force Oceanside's Josie to miss soon after most of the time. Josie then put Sugar in an impossible position on the last ball, which proved enough for Josie to take the win at 3-4 for a 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Josie made a couple of ugly errors in game 2, but for the most part she played well, and certainly good enough to beat the Spiders' Sugar, who had a number of late misses to take herself out of contention. Josie won 2-5, clinching the series at 2-0 with her win. Sugar played much better in game 3, taking consolation in the form of a 1-2 win to deny Josie's opportunity for a sweep. Josie settles for a 2-1 series win this time, and she will play as the visitor in a third round series.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Americus v. Shelley. Former club-mates meet in another Accuracy series with the red cue. Midland's Americus scratched on the break of game 1, taking the last shot advantage the hard way. It worked out, as Infinity's Shelley missed once in the middle and twice at the end while Americus was perfect after the first turn for a 1-3 win and 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Americus had a better stat but a much worse game 2 effort, missing in bursts early and late. The Torpedoes' Shelley was far from spotless, but kept a steadier hand to earn the 3-5 win, tying the series at 1. Shelley had a near-perfect game 3 performance, missing only once late in the game as Americus hopelessly floundered in an effort to get back into the game. Shelley's 1-3 win gave her a 2-1 series win, putting her in the visiting position in the third round.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: Luigi v. Caitlin Woode. The silver cue returns to action as we shift to a 9-ball series. Three-ball runs were the preferred method of offense in game 1, with North Modernistic's Luigi taking one on the break that ended in a scratch, and then one at the end to win after Southridge's Caitlin saw hers stall on the 7. Luigi leads the series at 1-0. Game 2 featured some shorter runs early on, as neither player had complete control of the game. The Nighthawks' Luigi soon faltered toward the end, and the Defenders' Caitlin took advantage with a three-ball run-out for a win to tie the series at 1. Caitlin played well early in game 3, and struck again after Luigi had a scratch in the middle, but her miss on the 7 allowed Luigi to unleash his three-ball run-out for the win. Luigi took the series 2-1, earning the right to host a series in the third round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Celestia v. Paps. The blue cue gets this series between a sophomore and a veteran in 15-ball. Neither player could make a game-changing run in game 1, but Oceanside's Celestia took a miss by Tysini's Paps on the 11 and turned it into a game-winning double-pot of the 11 to the top right and the 15 into the bottom right on the deflection. Celestia holds a 1-0 series lead after the highlight-worthy shot. The Waves' Celestia had a bad break in game 2, causing both players some trouble in their shots. The Hummingbirds' Paps had a few more errors than Celestia, but it was a miss on the 15 to the top left that cost him the game on a three-ball run. Celestia tapped it in on her first try to secure the series at 2-0. Celestia used smothering defense early in game 3, inducing two errors by Paps quickly. Celestia then suffocated him with offense, making a seven-ball run and a five-ball run-out on consecutive turns, the winning shot banking the 15 to the top side. Celestia swept the series 3-0 to earn the hosting position in the third round.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: Sugar v. Steven. The host plays her second series of the day in Rotation with the silver cue. Web City's Sugar controlled the pace early in game 1, but couldn't hold on in the end, as Atlantic's Steven rallied over two turns to tie the game, then picked up two of the last three balls for an 8-7 win and 1-0 series lead. The Pirates' Steven built up a nice lead in game 2 at the start, and while the Spiders' Sugar rallied on a three-ball run late in the game, it would ultimately fall short. Steven put the 13 in the top right to earn the 8-5 win, sealing the series at 2-0. Sugar controlled game 3 right from the start, slowly building up her lead while Steven eased off the pace a bit. Sugar would finish ahead 8-3, but Steven took the series win at 2-1 as he advances to the third round.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: B. Chapman v. Shawn. The blue cue will administer a tense series between club-mates in 7-ball with the blue cue. North Modernistic's Chapman had a dominant share of the offense, spreading it over many turns with no rush from Midland's Shawn. Chapman made every ball in the game for the 1-0 series lead with her win. The Predators' Shawn took a larger role in the offense in game 2, making a lot of the balls on his own. He unfortunately scratched after making the 6, leaving the game and the series to the Nighthawks' Chapman as she potted the 7 from ball-in-hand to clinch a 2-0 series. Chapman wasted no time in game 3, making a ball on the break and running the table for the win to make it a 3-0 series sweep over Shawn. Chapman is through to the third round.

Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Sprinkles v. Cowzart. Players who will meet soon in the Hutton Cup renew their teams' rivalry now in 9-ball with the blue cue. Capital City's Sprinkles had a pair of three-ball runs to start game 1, but it didn't matter when Westside's Cowzart made three balls over the last two turns for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Rockers' Cowzart continued to lead the way in game 2, controlling possession again and using a three-ball run-out to topple the Sharpshooters' Sprinkles after her miss on the 7. Cowzart holds a 2-0 series lead. Sprinkles couldn't do much in game 3, a scratch on the 6 ruining her offense in the middle of the game. Cowzart made the remaining four balls over two turns for the win and the 3-0 sweep. Cowzart will be on the road again in the third round.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Gradley v. Brownie. Today's final series is in 12-ball with the red cue. Boston's Gradley made quite the effort in game 1, recovering from double-potting at the top right on the break. Tysini's Brownie helped Gradley a bit too much, giving away a wild-card ball late in the game that eventually helped Gradley take his last ball for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Swifts' Gradley was less decisive on his shots in game 2, and gave the Hummingbirds' Brownie a wild-card ball early on. Brownie returned the favor toward the end to remove Gradley's defense. Gradley couldn't counter Brownie's seemingly generous play, and Brownie walked away with the win to tie the series at 1. Game 3 started off fine but quickly descended into chaos. Gradley at one point gave Brownie a wild-card ball, which she gave back and then surrendered one to Gradley a couple of turns later. Gradley missed his last ball twice, had a scratch, and still managed to pick up the win for a 2-1 series win. Gradley will play host to his Swifts teammate Sweetheart in the third round.

That's all for today's action. We'll likely start early tomorrow, although not to the same extent as today.
