Tournament 2018 - Round 2 Day 7

We're back for another likely pool-only day today, beginning in...

Google Hall, Modernistic: Chimpy v. Sweetheart. Two veterans lead off the day in 9-ball with the blue cue. Modernistic's Chimpy had a clear edge in possession in game 1, but by the time he made the 9, it didn't really matter. Both Chimpy and Boston's Sweetheart had a long chase on the 9, with Chimpy tapping it in on his fourth try for the win and 1-0 series lead. Game 2 went much the same, except it was the Swifts' Sweetheart with the lion's share of possession before finally besting the Union's Chimpy on her third attempt at the 9. Sweetheart's tap in after Chimpy's missed bank attempt tied the series at 1 game apiece. Chimpy had a strong outing in game 3, warming up on the early turns before unleashing a five-ball run-out to remove all doubt about his quality. Chimpy took the series 2-1 to get to the third round.

Nissan Hall, Infinity: Fluffina v. Tigerette. Two of the most recognizable stars of the league collide in 8-ball with the red cue. Commerce's Tigerette stayed ahead of Infinity's Fluffina throughout game 1, even after scratching to end a five-ball run. Fluffina pulled back a bit on her own run, but Tigerette won with a three-ball run-out to earn the 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Tigerette looked to be keeping with that theme early in game 2, but Tigerette lost her touch late in the game and the Torpedoes' Fluffina rallied on a four-ball run-out with some collateral damage to grab the win, tying the series at 1. Fluffina had all of the good shots early in game 3, but had no chance to respond when Tigerette got loose on a seven-ball run-out to take an impressive win. Tigerette takes the series 2-1, advancing to another road series in the third round.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Fuchsia v. Spice. A sophomore and a captain meet for this 9-ball series with the blue cue. After a slow start in game 1, Victoria's Spice cranked a three-ball run, only to scratch on her lone attempt at the 9. Midland's Fuchsia mopped it up from ball-in-hand for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Predators' Fuchsia had a much more confident game 2, with a three-ball run from the break and a five-ball run-out two turns later after the Spurs' Spice had a lack of offense throughout the game. Fuchsia's big runs secured the series for her at 2-0 with the win. Game 3 saw Spice play much better, taking a late three-ball run to get onto the 9. Long-distance shots by both players failed until Fuchsia's third attempt, which rattled off of three rails and into the top right for the win. Fuchsia took the series in a 3-0 sweep, and will host North Modernistic Nighthawks rookie Gal in the third round.

Nissan Hall, Infinity: Smudge v. Gizmo. Back in the Southwest, the blue cue stays in action for Accuracy. Eastside's Gizmo took an early lead in game 1, but Infinity's Smudge did not go quietly, dragging Gizmo behind in the middle of the game. The end was a bit sloppy, but it saw Smudge secure her lead at 3-4 for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Torpedoes' Smudge made an absolute mess of taking an early lead, falling far behind by the middle of game 2. The Sharks' Gizmo lacked control of the game until the very end, where his late shooting earned him an ugly 4-6 win to tie the series at 1. Game 3 was tied for a majority of the rack, but Gizmo faltered with a handful of misses in a row. Smudge stayed steady, only faltering toward the end but holding on to grab the 3-4 win and the 2-1 series win. Smudge is set to host the Freedom Cascades' Roxy in the third round.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Kirstin v. Debby Ryan. Another Accuracy series follows, and the blue cue plays this one as well. Both players were perfect deep into game 1, but Everton's Kirstin crumbled with a bunch of misses late, while Southridge's Debby stayed perfect for the 0-3 win. Debby leads the series 1-0. The Defenders' Debby didn't start as well in game 2, but the Eagles' Kirstin also struggled. Late in the game, the players fell into a tie twice before Kirstin dropped behind on the second-to-last ball. Debby secured the win at 3-4 with an easy shot on her last turn, sealing the series at 2-0 in her favor. Game 3 saw chaos toward the end, as neither player could make a shot to avoid ending in a tie. Debby finally put in the last ball, leading to Kirstin's soft break in overtime. Both players missed their first shot in the extra rack, but played well beyond that until Debby had a late miss that gave Kirstin a 6-7 win. Debby still took the series 2-1, and will play on into the third round.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Shawn v. Sweetheart. Long-time veterans are set to meet in 10-ball with the red cue. Game 1 was a choppy battle between the two players. Boston's Sweetheart looked better in the middle of the game, but Midland's Shawn picked up steam late and won on his second try at the 10 after Sweetheart left it short at the bottom left. Shawn has a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 went from choppy to bad after only a couple of balls were potted early on. The Predators' Shawn lost his patience in the middle of the game, allowing the Swifts' Sweetheart to dictate the pace, but Sweetheart faltered twice near the end, and Shawn picked up the win to clinch the series at 2-0. Game 3 saw an increase in quality on both sides. Sweetheart again did well in the middle with a nice run, but Shawn quickly countered it with a four-ball run-out to secure the sweep. Shawn's 3-0 series win sees him take the road for a third round series.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Puff II v. Bryant. The red cue stays in action in this Rotation battle. Maplewood's Bryant held a lead early in game 1, and while Boston's Puff II caught up briefly near the end of the game, Bryant emerged with an 8-5 win after a three-ball run-out. Bryant leads the series 1-0. The Swifts' Puff II kept herself in the series in game 2, quickly answering a hot start from the Lumberjacks' Bryant with a four-ball run. Both players scratched to stall late runs, but Puff II popped up and won 8-5 to tie the series at 1 after Bryant couldn't extend his last turn. Game 3 saw Puff II start on a three-ball run. She later extended her lead, but Bryant caught up with a three-ball run to tie the game. Puff II then broke free on another three-ball run to win the game 8-5, securing the series for herself at 8-5. Puff II took the series 2-1 and will host a series in the third round.

Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: Missy v. Graham. The blue cue's last series today is between veterans in 7-ball. Eastside's Graham showed a lot of skill and flair on his good shots in game 1, but plenty of bad shots displayed inconsistency. He made the 6 on a great cut, but his miss on the 7 left a long-range shot that Capital City's Missy converted to poach the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Sharpshooters' Missy contributed much more to the offense in game 2, banging in a five-ball run-out to secure the series at 2-0 as the Sharks' Graham had nothing left in the tank after the previous loss. Missy dominated again in game 3, blasting a four-ball run early on and adding the 6-7 combination to the top left at the end to earn the 3-0 series sweep over Graham. Missy advances this bid into the third round.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Precious v. Cassandra. An Eastern Hills Derby takes place in 9-ball, using the red cue for this one. Diamond's Cassandra had a nice double-pot of the 1 to the bottom left and the 3 to the top side, but later errors slowed her down. Pronger's Precious did not wait, making three of the last four balls over two turns for the win and a 1-0 lead in the series. The Tridents' Precious was shaken when she launched the cue ball off the table on a miscue. The Gems' Cassandra picked up some offense from this, but Precious bounced back on a late three-ball run, only to miss the 9. Cassandra again stepped in, tapping the 9 to the top left to tie the series at 1. Cassandra had more of the offense in game 3, a five-ball run over the middle being the obvious reason. Cassandra did miss on the 8 despite a triple-kiss near the pocket. Precious then converted the 8 and struck the 9 to the bottom right to take the game and a 2-1 series win. Precious had some nervy moments, but she will host a series in the third round.

Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: Dusty v. Lorde. The red cue stays in action for a series of Accuracy. Golden's Dusty had a scratch on the break of game 1, which proved costly as both players were nearly perfect after that. Capital City's Lorde missed once in the middle, and Dusty missed soon after that, giving Lorde her 1-2 win for the 1-0 series lead. The Pilots' Dusty wasn't any better in game 2, but she managed to make the Sharpshooters' Lorde look a lot worse. Dusty kept a steady performance, while Lorde had a spurt of misses late in the game, allowing Dusty to tie the series at 1 with a 2-6 win. Dusty couldn't quite hold on in a close game 3 performance, slipping after a mid-game scratch and never catching up. Lorde held her ground well, taking the 2-4 win after a late miss made it look a bit closer than it was. Lorde's 2-1 series win puts her into a road appearance in the third round.

Subway Arena, Stonebridge: Vladimir Vasilyev v. Daisy. Two younger players are set to meet in 12-ball with the red cue. Stonebridge's Vladimir had two stripes on the game 1 break, but a pair of scratches coupled with a three-ball run and a pair of shots two turns later from Modernistic's Daisy turned the game around. Daisy didn't even have to make her last ball, as Vladimir accidentally potted it for her, giving Daisy a 1-0 series lead. The Wolves' Vladimir made a radical improvement in game 2, overcoming being put behind early by a nice run from the Union's Daisy. Vladimir fought back, picking the corners first and getting good positioning to execute a three-ball run-out when the time was right. Vladimir's smart play here tied the series at 1. Game 3 saw a race between the two players, although Daisy had a bit of a head start with a quick run on her first turn. Vladimir caught up and had a chance to get the win, but a scratch and Daisy making a good contact play on her last ball doomed his chances at the end. Daisy eventually tapped her last shot in, taking the series 2-1 to move onto the third round.

Chevrolet Center, Everton: Cleo v. Jack. The day ends with the silver cue playing 15-ball in a Northeastern Derby between returnees. Everton's Cleo started out pretty well in game 1, but she couldn't piece things together after a slow middle part of the game. Eventually, Web City's Jack took up the pace, and made the 15 on his second try for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Spiders' Jack controlled the pace in most of game 2 as well, although there were some difficulties thanks to his bad break. The Eagles' Cleo almost had a chance at the win when she made the 13 late in the game, but she scratched on the same shot, and Jack potted the 15 from ball-in-hand to clinch the series at 2-0. Cleo would not leave the series empty-handed, pulling together a six-ball run-out for the win in game 3 after Jack faded from the offense. Jack still took the series 2-1, and will advance to the third round.

That's all for today's activities. It is looking more likely that Hutton Cup play will begin next Monday.
