Tournament 2018 - Round 2 Day 2

We're back to keep the second round going today. We begin with...

Apple Center, Todavía: Prism v. Dustin. The red cue will lead the day off with an 8-ball series. Todavía's Prism started off well in game 1, but both players struggled in the middle of the game. Central's Dustin lacked much in the way of offense until late, but Prism shut the door and took the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Stills' Prism had a four-ball run early on before watching her offense come in unstable spurts after that. The Warriors' Dustin made a late push to catch up, but Prism tapped the 8 in for the win at the end, clinching the series at 2-0. Dustin had the better offense with a four-ball run early in game 3, but Prism showed off her comeback skills this time, making a five-ball run-out to secure the win and a 3-0 series sweep. Prism is into the third round with this strong series.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Zach v. Dusty. A strong third-year player meets a legend in a series of 9-ball played with the silver cue. Golden's Dusty had a decent performance in game 1, making a short run early on and then opening a four-ball run-out at the end to take a 1-0 series lead over Pronger's Zach, who had very little to like about his effort. The Tridents' Zach picked up some of the slack that the Pilots' Dusty left in a weaker game 2 showing, but Dusty still found her way to the win with a four-ball run-out, clinching the series at 2-0 in the process. Dusty struggled a bit more in game 3, leaving a lot of shots on the table. This proved true on her miss on the 8, which allowed Zach to take the last two balls for his only win in the 2-1 series. Dusty advances to the third round with the series win.

IBM Cathedral, North Modernistic: B. Chapman v. Gal Gadot. The blue cue gets a crack at 9-ball in an all-Nighthawks series. Chapman had a ball on the break and a four-ball run late in game 1, taking a majority of the possession, but a scratch as she made the 8 allowed Gal to pot the 9 from ball-in-hand for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw a remarkable seven-ball run from the break by Gal, who had a heavy but accurate shot going. This dried up on her second and third turns, and Chapman would take the win with a tap-in on the 9 after Gal left it at the top right. The series is tied at 1. Gal won game 3 on her second turn, converting a 1-9 combination to the top right through traffic despite Chapman's best efforts at defense. Gal took the series 2-1, and will advance to the third round.

Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Nibbles v. Mr. Snowman. The blue cue begins a stretch of three straight Accuracy series. Viewpoint Sound's Nibbles made a tough double-pot early in game 1, and the corresponding last shot advantage came in handy when the game ended tied. Infinity's Mr. Snowman made a ball on the overtime break, but failed two shots later, and Nibbles took the 3-4 win for a 1-0 series lead. The Meteors' Nibbles again did a double-pot in game 2, this time giving the Torpedoes' Mr. Snowman the advantage. Once again, the first rack ended tied, but Nibbles easily made a ball on the overtime break and Mr. Snowman couldn't follow up. Nibbles clinched the series at 2-0 with his 2-3 win. Nibbles and Mr. Snowman had another good early battle that faded into a tie by the end of game 3. Nibbles forced Mr. Snowman onto the overtime break, and then cleaned up the pieces for a 2-3 win to secure the 3-0 series sweep. Nibbles will host another series in the third round.

AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Celestia v. Roxy. Also on the coast, the Accuracy streak continues with the blue cue. Both players remained perfect for over half of game 1, but Freedom's Roxy missed twice soon after. Oceanside's Celestia slipped a bit, and had a late scare, but Roxy missed on her last shot, giving Celestia a 2-3 win for a 1-0 series lead. The Waves' Celestia had some good looks in game 2, but a rocky start had her behind by too much too early. The Cascades' Roxy also faltered early, but corralled her shots quicker and took the win 2-5 to tie the series at 1. Celestia tried to keep up with Roxy in game 3, even holding an early lead before a bad miss and a scratch put the host behind. Roxy would not make another mistake, winning 1-3 to claim the 2-1 series win, which puts her on the road in the third round.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Diddley v. Dusky. A Northeastern Derby ends the blue cue Accuracy streak as the day reaches half-completion. Maplewood's Diddley took a large lead early in game 1 over Archtown's Dusky, and made it stick even as the quality of his play dropped late in the game. Diddley held on to win 2-5, good for a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 saw both players make improvements in their offense, going perfect until just about the end. The Arrows' Dusky ended on a scratch while making the last ball, putting Diddley in control of the overtime break from ball-in-hand. He converted his first shot, but missed on his second turn, giving Dusky the 1-2 win to tie the series at 1. Diddley and Dusky battled in perfection for awhile in game 3 as well, until Dusky couldn't answer Diddley's double-pot. Diddley would cruise to the finish on a 1-3 win, securing advancement with a 2-1 series win. Diddley will be the host for his third round series.

Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Mams v. Leandra. A couple of talented veterans and former club-mates meet in 12-ball with the silver cue. Viewpoint Sound's Mams had a decent start, but also scratched on the game 1 break. Tysini's Leandra popped up later with a four-ball run to apply pressure, and Leandra won from ball-in-hand after Mams illegally potted a ball. Leandra holds a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Leandra gave away a wild-card ball on the break and got down to her last ball quickly, but the Meteors' Mams kept defensive positioning and eventually came from behind to get the win, tying the series at 1 in a very difficult game. Mams had a great start to game 3, attacking immediately, but Leandra took a strategic turn to get the sides out of the way. Mams lost momentum getting positioning on her last two shots, and Leandra struck back, winning on a bank of the 9 to the top right to give her a 2-1 series win after Mams missed by centimeters at the top side. Leandra advances on narrow margins to the third round.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Summer v. Stinky. The red cue comes back into play for 8-ball as the host begins her personal doubleheader. Maplewood's Summer had a good game 1 break, but nothing fell. Freedom's Stinky launched a five-ball run with a phantom shot causing a little collateral damage, but Summer struggled to get back into the game. When she did, she missed the 8, and Stinky converted to take the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Lumberjacks' Summer had some chances to strike early in game 2, but she wasted too much time, letting the Cascades' Stinky find his shot again. Stinky came through with a three-ball run-out at the end, securing the series at 2-0. Summer had her best performance in game 3, holding a lead for most of the game, but Stinky rallied back on a four-ball run-out at the end to claim the win and the 3-0 series sweep. Stinky is in a position to host his third round series.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Summer v. Bells. The host's doubleheader completes with 15-ball and the blue cue against a more tenured veteran. Maplewood's Summer had three separate three-ball runs in game 1, but Todavía's Bells struck with the last three balls spread over two turns to take the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Stills' Bells had a four-ball run amid short pairs and individual shots as she controlled the early pace of the game. It didn't matter by the end, as the Lumberjacks' Summer asserted herself late in the game and won with a three-ball run-out to tie the series at 1. Bells showed mercy to Summer after the rookie's early error in game 3, but Bells got what she wanted anyway with a five-ball run-out featuring a glanced 8-15 combination for the win. Bells took the series 2-1, and will host her series in the third round.

Google Hall, Modernistic: Ms. Puppy v. Wild Thing. We're onto 7-ball now, with the silver cue administering the series. Neither played could develop a steady run in game 1, with many attempts fizzling out after a shot. This led to Archtown's Wild Thing picking up the win with a tap-in on the 7 after Modernistic's Ms. Puppy missed it. The Arrows' Wild Thing came out of the gate in game 2 with a four-ball run, getting a lot of luck before the 4 refused to drop at the bottom right. The Union's Ms. Puppy shut it down from here with a three-ball run-out, tying the series at 1. Ms. Puppy brought the series to an abrupt end, breaking and watching the 7 bounce off the 2, 5, and then the 4 to fall in the top right for the win. Ms. Puppy's jarring shot clinched a 2-1 series win to defeat Wild Thing, giving the host a spot in the third round.

Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Jason N. v. Cassandra. The red cue has the last two series today, beginning with this 15-ball battle. Swordpoint's Jason had the better of the offense early in game 1, but he scratched on the 8, and Diamond's Cassandra took over with a five-ball run-out for the win. Cassandra leads the series 1-0. The Gems' Cassandra had a suffocating amount of offense in game 2, barely letting the Blades' Jason shoot early on. Things didn't get better for Jason, as Cassandra assembled quite brilliantly a nine-ball run-out to grab the win, clinching the series at 2-0. Cassandra couldn't get her shot in order in game 3, faltering throughout the game until Jason put an end to it with a three-ball run-out. Cassandra still took the series 2-1 to advance into the third round.

Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Twinkie III v. Tigerette. A bitter Urban regional rivalry is renewed, as the Industrial Derby goes in Rotation with the red cue to end the day. Whitewater's Twinkie III had at least three fortunate bounces, including the first and last shots of the game, as she picked up an 8-3 win over an ineffective attack by Commerce's Tigerette. Twinkie III has a 1-0 series lead. The Shores' Twinkie III had a bit less luck but just as much success in game 2, as she closed up another 8-3 win after a scratch by the Tradewinds' Tigerette gave the host ball-in-hand. Twinkie III clinched the series at 2-0 with this win. Twinkie III continued to be dominant in game 3, pummeling in balls early on and then ending on a three-ball run-out to stifle Tigerette at 8-2. Twinkie III swept the series 3-0 to earn her spot in the third round.

That's all for today's games. We'll be back with Elite and the next Tournament day tomorrow.
