Select Cricket 2019 - Week 21

The last week before the United Cup break is here, with two Select teams finishing their seasons. First up is a pivotal battle...

Sprint Pitch, Victoria: The battle for third place (for now) has its last installment, with the Lumberjacks sitting Diddley and the Spurs benching Sage in both teams' only game this week. Whiskers lashed 509 for Maplewood right at the start, a good turn from the visiting star. Spice lost a little ground with 361 for Victoria, giving them an extra motivation to attack later. Summer stumbled at 193 for the Lumberjacks on the second attack, weakening their lead quite a bit. Yekaterina dialed up 888 for the Spurs in a massive counterattack to grab the lead. Bryant pushed back with 579 for Maplewood in a strong comeback effort. Strawberry's 334 restored a smaller lead for Victoria entering the final turn. Gabe couldn't meet the challenge with 112 for the Lumberjacks, leaving them with 1393 in the loss. Mitchell's mediocre 243 sealed the Spurs win at 1826. Victoria gets a big win to rise to 27-14, while Maplewood drops to 28-14. The teams split their season series, so a tiebreaker would come down to points.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: Wild Thing sits for the Wolves, while the Arrows prepare for a Cinderella run in United Cup by resting Hoppy. Sally cranked out a quick 504 for Archtown on the first turn of the game. Juno crushed 869 for Stonebridge in response, giving the hosts the initial lead with her big outing. Sleepy B. roared back with 759 for the Arrows to seemingly cover the deficit with ease. Cobalt's 539 was enough for the Wolves to reclaim the lead at the midway mark. Dusky picked up 405 for Archtown in a fairly cautious effort. Hershey fell with only 65 as he couldn't save a ball on his backhand, causing Stonebridge to fall behind late in the game. A. Charlton slapped another 515 for the Arrows to close their game at 2183. Vladimir fell far short with his 164 as the Wolves took the loss on 1637. Archtown rises to 19-21 and dumps Stonebridge back to 17-21.

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The first game in a four-game weave sees the host Gems sit Leonardo while the visiting Monarchs have Salmo on the sidelines. Mams clubbed 550 for Southern before getting beat on a low offering. Shadow had an unusual turn with a mild 260 for Diamond, putting the hosts behind at the start. Panda clipped 384 more to help the Monarchs give their lead a slight boost. Smokey also struggled for the Gems with a mere 258, causing them to lose ground at the halfway point. Pounce kept Southern on track with a solid 450 in another good appearance for the veteran. Pedey was stunned at 112 for Diamond, exiting on a high hit that makes a comeback unlikely. Dominic matched that with only 112 for the Monarchs, leaving them with 1496. Katelynn's 295 didn't save the Gems, who took a hard loss at 925. Southern's surprising win takes them to 9-33 while Diamond drops to 20-17 with the loss.

Starbucks Cup, Archtown: The Gems will try to bounce back on the road with Pedey out for rest, while the Arrows elect to rest Dusky this time out. Shadow did better with 432 to lead things off for Diamond this time. Sally made a mess of her turn with only 96 for Archtown, giving them a deficit to attack. Smokey got caught on his backhand at 350 for the Gems, providing a small extension to their lead. Sleepy B. just about matched it with 329 for the Arrows, but they continue to trail at this stage of the game. Katelynn showed some strength with 595 for Diamond to extend their lead in a more dominant manner. Hoppy countered with 391 for Archtown, again causing them to lose ground. Leonardo left the door open with his 144 for the Gems to seal their score at 1521. A. Charlton was unable to rally with 287 for the Arrows, leaving the hosts at a loss with 1103. Diamond bounces back at 21-17, while Archtown is down to 19-22 with the loss.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Arrows take their turn on the road this time, giving Sleepy B. a breather while the Sharks have Gizmo taking his regular rest. Sally chopped a firm 606 for Archtown from the lead-off spot to begin her team's road finale. Graham edged Eastside ahead by the thinnest of margins with 609 on his starting attack. Hoppy was strong on the second attack with 556 for the Arrows to keep the scoring high. Chelsea was unable to keep the Sharks ahead, but they don't trail by much after her 515. Dusky suffered a swing and miss at 706 for Archtown, another massive attack to keep pressure on the hosts. Taylor M. fell out of rhythm at 144 for Eastside, causing the hosts to lag far behind. A. Charlton poked 295 for the Arrows at the end to finish the game with 2163 in total. Cubby's 304 for the Sharks was not enough, as they suffered the loss at 1572. Archtown returns to 20-22 while Eastside stumbles to 12-29, officially set to finish in 11th in Select this year.

Microsoft Pitch, Del Sur: The two worst teams in Select clash for the final time, with the Sharks sitting Taylor M. while Dominic is out in the Monarchs' home finale. Graham levied 467 for Eastside in a good opening effort for the visitors. Mams pulled Southern ahead initially, striking 513 to establish their early lead. Chelsea elected to play with pace in scoring 490 for the Sharks to cover the deficit. Panda kept the Monarchs in control with his 544 at the midway point, giving their lead a small boost. Gizmo lined 718 for Eastside this time, raising the stakes even higher to challenge the hosts. Pounce didn't keep up, his 341 leaving Southern in a trailing position with a player each to go. Cubby tacked on 642 for the Sharks at the end, wrapping up the game with 2317 overall. Salmo's 472 was a good showing despite the Monarchs' loss at 1870. Eastside rises to 13-29 while Southern finishes 3-19 at home and drops to 9-34 overall.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Specters close out their regular season with Rudolph on the bench, while the Wolves sit Hershey after his struggles earlier in the week. Sydney S. did alright with 461 for Harrison at the start. Juno couldn't be stopped, launching 869 for Stonebridge to put them quite far ahead initially. Twinkie II covered the deficit with 480 for the Specters, but this appears to be a tough finale for them. Cobalt maintained the Wolves' lead with 445 halfway through the game. Blizzard rallied with 676 for Harrison, applying a bit more pressure on the hosts to keep up their offense. Wild Thing lost ground with 425 for Stonebridge, but they remain ahead entering the final turn. Lexi wasted the chance with just 65 for the Specters, who lost with 1682. Vladimir added 391 at the end to secure the Wolves win at 2130. Stonebridge jumps to 18-21, while Harrison falls to 30-14 after ending the year 14-8 on the road.

Google Pitch at Union Ground, Modernistic: The Monarchs finish their season on the road against the Union. Mams will sit for the visitors while the hosts rest their captain, Ms. Puppy. Panda smacked 616 for Southern to get the scoring going in fine form. Daisy kept pace with 674 for Modernistic, enough to sneak the hosts ahead in a high-scoring start. Pounce doubled the Monarchs' offense with 615 on the second attack. Puff I couldn't keep up, raking in 407 for the Union as they slip behind. Dominic took his foot off the gas with 295 for Southern, leaving them a bit exposed. Kodiak made a gain with 419 for Modernistic, making things fairly close at the end. Salmo produced 264 at the end for the Monarchs, closing their offense at 1790. Sydney C. pulled the Union ahead with 376 at the end, confirming their win at 1876. Modernistic escapes a trap game to get to 17-24, while Southern ends the year at 9-35 with a 6-16 road record.

Volkswagen Stadium, Viewpoint Sound: These teams play a home-and-home this week, with the Wolves sitting Vladimir on the road while the Meteors are without Dani as they finish their home schedule. Juno got caught with a ball on her bat handle, which fell back and took her wicket at 425 for Stonebridge to build on. Princess kept it close with 387 for Viewpoint Sound on the first turn. Cobalt responded with 582 on the second attack for the Wolves, growing their lead nicely. Hoot dropped at 480 for the Meteors, causing them to slip a little farther behind. Hershey returned to the lineup and drilled 684 for Stonebridge to extend the lead again. Frosty roared back with 885 for Viewpoint Sound to put them narrowly ahead with a player each to go. Wild Thing had an okay 332 for the Wolves to close their offense at 2023. Nibbles shelved 467 for the Meteors to complete the comeback as they won with 2219. Viewpoint Sound ended their home slate at 9-13 to move to 17-23 while Stonebridge is down to 18-22 after the loss.

Home Depot Forum, Web City: The Union take to the road for the final time, sitting Puff I versus the Spiders, who rest Chicky Phil in their penultimate game of the season. Ms. Puppy flipped 418 for Modernistic in her return to the lineup. Waluigi had a rare misplay with only 80 for Web City, putting the hosts in quite the hole. Daisy kept the Union strong with 625 on the second attack to boost the lead greatly. Ted bobbled his last swing, falling at 295 as the Spiders lack much in the way of offense. Kodiak knocked 475 for Modernistic in another good turn to keep the visitors in control. Jack matched that with 494 for Web City, but a comeback remains unlikely given the rest of the deficit. Sydney C. tapped 272 for the Union at the end to give them 1790 for the game. Avril's 324 for the Spiders at the end just brought their losing total to 1193. Modernistic ended 6-16 on the road and improved to 18-24 this season, while Web City is down to 20-23.

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Gems sit their captain Smokey in a big meeting with the Nighthawks, who remain without the injured Cheddar in their tune-up game before the United Cup. Peach tried a multi-stage flick to save her turn, but it went out of play and she stopped at 580 for North Modernistic. Shadow answered with 300 for Diamond in another lackluster turn this week. Gal padded the Nighthawks lead with 368 on the second attack. Pedey shot back with 447 for the Gems, making a small gain against the deficit at the midway point. Lionel had a pacey 526 for North Modernistic, restrengthening the visitors' advantage. Katelynn backed off with 267 for Diamond, unable to match the competition. Luigi iced the effort with 443 for the Nighthawks, putting their final score at 1917. Leonardo collapsed with 135 for the Gems, sealing their fate as a loss with 1149. North Modernistic is 30-13 and a win away from claiming the top spot in Select, while Diamond drops to 21-18, officially securing the final Hutton Cup spot from Select for the Victoria Spurs.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: In the Week 21 finale, a rematch from earlier sees the Wolves sit Cobalt on regular rest for their last home game, while the Meteors bench Princess as they begin their final four-game road trip. Hoot made the most of his lead-off chance with 625 for Viewpoint Sound in a productive opener. Juno matched it on the dot with 625 for Stonebridge to keep things even through the first turn. Frosty melted at 195 under the pressure of playing against her former team, leaving the Meteors in a tough position. Hershey's 290 for the Wolves wasn't a lot better, but it put them ahead. Nibbles roared back with 759 for Viewpoint Sound to put them far ahead. Wild Thing didn't get it all back, but his 605 kept Stonebridge within striking distance on the final turn. Dani had a simple 295 for the Meteors at the end to close their scoring at 1874. Vladimir went with 447 for the Wolves on a high-pace turn to give them the win at 1967. Stonebridge's home record was 11-11 as they move up to 19-22 while Viewpoint Sound dips again to 17-24.

That's all for Select for awhile, completing their portion of August's accelerated schedule.
