We're back to play the second legs of the second round of United Cup action. We'll start with Select again, beginning with...
Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Wolves need to make up 652 points at home, and will sit Vladimir while Gal is out for the visiting Nighthawks. Peach got off to a positive start with 514 for North Modernistic, building their cushion in the series quite well. Juno had a couple of shaky swings late before falling at 487 for Stonebridge to keep them close in the game. Cheddar did well to fight off the danger with 443 for the Nighthawks this time. Cobalt lost ground with 339 for the Wolves at the halfway mark, their series comeback looking unlikely. Lionel posted 454 more for North Modernistic, protecting their lead well. Hershey just about covered that damage with 424 for Stonebridge, but they'll need a big push now. Luigi poked 391 for the Nighthawks to cap their offense at 1802 for a combined series score of 3849. Wild Thing took big swings but fell at 320 for the Wolves, their losses at 1570 for the game and 2965 in the series.
Google Pitch at Union Ground, Modernistic: The Union's long-shot comeback will come with Puff I on the bench, while the Lumberjacks opt to rest their captain Diddley. Whiskers slapped an even 500 for Maplewood, showing no signs of going easy on a disenchanted opponent. Ms. Puppy had the pace but a poor swing downed her at 405 for Modernistic. Summer stumbled a bit with only 227 for the Lumberjacks, leaving the door to the game open at least. Daisy made only a modest gain with 245 for the Union. Bryant upped the offense with 639 for Maplewood, a huge extension to their lead. Kodiak got caught on his backhand and fell at 292 for Modernistic, who would need a miracle to save their United Cup run at this point. Gabe exited with just 199 for the Lumberjacks, sealing their scores at 1565 in the game and 3847 in the series. Sydney C. ended at 192 as the Union fell with 1134 in the game and 2203 in the series.
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: Northeastern rivals meet again, with the Specters sitting Rudolph while the Arrows try to protect their lead with A. Charlton in reserve. Sydney S. began with 529 for Harrison, just about covering the deficit heading into the game. Sally ceded some of the series lead with 258 for Archtown, tightening things up early in the second leg. Twinkie II didn't help the Specters much with 260 on her turn, wasting a good pace with a high swing. Sleepy B. took advantage of the weakness, pummeling 655 to restore a strong lead for the Arrows. Blizzard tried to get Harrison back in the game, but her 258 didn't do their offense any favors. Hoppy surged with 611 for Archtown this time, making it very likely they'll secure the upset and advance. Lexi folded at 156 and the Specters took losses in the game at 1203 and in the series at 2721. Dusky iced the win with 379 for the Arrows, with their winning totals at 1903 in the game and 3956 in the series as they converted a sweep.
FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks are only down by 390 points in the series and will sit Chelsea for this match, while the visiting Spurs look to protect that lead without Strawberry. Spice slammed 643 for Victoria, providing a strong addition to their series lead right at the start of the game. Graham tried a backhand flick but it fell short, ending his turn at 324 as Eastside will need to step up. Yekaterina was relentless in tacking on 544 for the Spurs, their lead growing every turn. Taylor M. made a gain with 782 for the Sharks, cutting into the deficit a bit at the halfway mark. Sage fired back with 402 for Victoria, trying to give them a buffer late in the game. Gizmo gave Eastside a lead in the game with 576, but they've got ground to cover on the final turn. Mitchell had a paltry 81 for the Spurs at the end, giving them 1671 in a loss for the game while putting their series score at 3167. Cubby produced a solid 359 for the Sharks, giving them totals of 2041 in the game and 3148 as they took a 19-point loss in the series.
Audi Knights Pitch, Terrace City: The Knights hold a big lead at home and will sit Jennifer this time, while the Volcanoes go all-in and bench Leonette in hopes of an unlikely comeback. Starlight didn't get Pacific going all that well with just 184 on the opening turn. Kiwi was even worse with 96 for Terrace City, perhaps giving the visitors a small glimpse of hope. Ms. Kitty charged with 561 for the Volcanoes, about halving the series deficit. Oreo covered that with 570 for the Knights, keeping their series lead protected halfway through the game. Twinkie I got beat by a high bouncing ball that tipped off the base of her bat, ending her turn at just 64 for Pacific. Quincy hit 425 for Terrace City, likely enough to confirm their advancement. Cowzart covered the game deficit with 310, giving the Volcanoes final scores of 1119 in the game and 2618 in the series. Melissa secured both wins for the Knights with an individual 410 giving her team 1501 in the game and 3870 in the series sweep.
Sony Stadium, Queens: The Flames have to cover a 140-point deficit, and they'll bench Briana, while the Surfers elect to sit Bright in their road leg. Watermelon faltered with a mere 96 points for Pearl on the first turn. Crystal chipped 411 for Queens, enough for them to snag the series lead early in the game. Boots slipped at 215 for the Surfers, regaining the advantage in the series by a thin margin. Violetta was unable to break out, hitting only 193 as the Flames pull ahead again at the midway mark. Neopolitan exploded with 744 for Pearl on her turn, taking a strong grip on the game and the series alike. Mario got 326 back for Queens, but they trail across the board with a player each to go. Beth knocked 456 for the Surfers, closing their scoring at 1511 in the game and 3925 in the series. Hannah fell short with 326 for the Flames, and they took losses at 1256 and 3530 for the game and series respectively.
Toyota Pitch, Freedom: The Cascades are ahead by only 41 points and sitting Stinky again, while their Eastern Hills rivals, the Tridents, bench Zach while needing only a small win. Precious took the first shot with 470 for Pronger in what's expected to be a back-and-forth battle. Jasmine had only 368 for the Freedom at the start, putting the hosts behind in the series. Spot fell back at 245 for the Tridents, who retain a smaller lead for now. Roxy nearly connected on a backhand flip but dropped at 160 for the Cascades, who are quickly losing ground halfway through the game. Potter had the pace but not the placement, ending at a solid 326 for Pronger. Nikolai pushed back with a high-pace 384 for Freedom on his turn, but they'll need a bit more on the final attack. Lize couldn't step up for the Tridents, her 48 leaving them at a vulnerable 1089 for the game and 2988 in the series. Stripes did her part with 470 for the Cascades to earn them wins with 1382 in the game and 3322 in the series. The Cascades pulled off a hard-fought sweep.
GE Stadium, Southridge: The Defenders face a tough task with a 360-point deficit, and they'll sit Wario while the visiting Waves rest Jason V. on the road. Snuggle pounded out 503 for Oceanside right at the start of the game. Bianca had pace but fell quickly at 150 with a high swing that clipped the boundary. Celestia produced another 407 for the Waves in a supporting attack. Debby dropped off at 202 for the Defenders, unable to push the offense any higher. Josie struggled with a mere 164 for Oceanside, potentially giving them a little vulnerability. Stephanie wasted the opportunity with a measly 56 for Southridge, who appear unable to prevent their exit from the competition. Dewey tapped 350 for the Waves, closing their offense at 1424 overall and 3345 across the two-game set. Caitlin managed 227 for the Defenders, but they left with only 635 in the game and 2196 overall.
HP Field, Midland: The Predators are up by only 43 points and will sit Americus for this game, while the Pirates sit Jason N. as the scapegoat from the first round. Delila easily covered the deficit in the series with 438 for Atlantic on the initial turn. Shawn replied with 361 for Midland, putting them just narrowly behind in both the game and the series. Isabella took a step forward with 648 for the Pirates on the second attack, strengthening their lead greatly. Rainmane thundered back with 729 for the Predators, edging them ahead in the game. Steven answered with 395 for Atlantic, enough to give them a temporary lead. Fuchsia fired back with 476 for Midland, boosting their lead heading into the final players' turns. Klaus slugged a crisp 720 for the Pirates to put their finals at 2201 in the game and 3717 overall. Kitty couldn't do it with 81 for the Predators, leaving them to lose at 1647 in the game and 3206 in the series. Atlantic's comeback here helped them win the split series on points.
Nissan Infinity Stadium, Infinity: The Torpedoes carry a 348-point lead into the second leg and will sit Mr. Snowman at home, while the visiting Warriors are without their rookie Andrew. Twilight cracked 572 for Central this time, enough to temporarily cover the series deficit. Smudge got some back with 360 for Infinity, regaining some of the cushion on the first turn. Dustin answered with 609 for the Warriors, boosting their lead a little more on the second attack. Fluffina dug back with 540 for the Torpedoes, doing her part to keep it close. Wings didn't push as hard with 407 for Central, but they've covered the series deficit for a third time. Shelley restored a bit of Infinity's series lead with 443 this time, meaning they'll just need to repel one more attack. Noelle had 214 for the Warriors, putting them at 1802 in the game and 3110 overall. Hughbert fell at 146, leaving the Torpedoes to lose the game at 1489, but they won the series on points with 3145.
Cisco Tysini Field, Tysini: Southwestern rivals clash again, as the visiting Sharpshooters sit Lorde while the Hummingbirds take a 400-point cushion with Charli on the pine. Chris ignored the deficit with 745 for Capital City, putting them in a position to make this a competitive battle. Sarah shot back with 405 for Tysini, enough to reclaim some of their advantage. Missy took 308 for the Sharpshooters, again covering the deficit but only by a small margin. Leandra lost a little more ground with 287 for the Hummingbirds, who are just hanging on at this stage. Sprinkles crushed 669 for Capital City this time, giving the visitors a significant edge. Vincent popped 384 for Tysini, putting them behind in the series with a player each to go. Pauline pushed 227 for the Sharpshooters, leaving them with 1949 in the game and 3195 across the series. Paps had 245 for the Hummingbirds, putting them at 1321 to lose the game, while their 2967 lost them the split series.
Blades Fusion ProGlide Park, Swordpoint: The United Cup second round finale sees the Blades attempt to defend a 923-point lead while sitting their captain Snowball, while the Shores' long-shot effort is without Marsell. Twinkie III whiffed on a swing at 211 for Whitewater, a mediocre at best start. Dreamy buried them with 676 for Swordpoint, giving the hosts a significant lead. Shaggy fell with 185 for the Shores, who are apparently just playing the game out. Bandit took it easy with 135 for the Blades, who are in very little danger at the midway point. Katharine had a mild 235 for Whitewater to gain a small amount of ground. Stealth swatted 596 for Swordpoint, making his own addition to a series already in firm control. Rosalina bowed out at 144, leaving the Shores in a brutal loss with 775 and just 1796 overall in the series, which didn't even cover Swordpoint's first-leg score. Sugar accepted 270 for the Blades, icing their wins at 1677 in the game and 3621 in the series.
That's all for the United Cup second round. Cricket is expected to play a condensed schedule over the next three to four weeks, with United Cup third round action potentially arriving at the start of September.
