Tournament 2019 - Round 1 Day 24

The latest set of action is ready to go, beginning with...

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Watermelon v. Briana. The silver cue starts off the day in 12-ball. After a nearly four-month hiatus from May 8 to August 30, the league is ready to resume Tournament play. It looked like a four-month layoff in game 1, which saw Pearl's Watermelon slowly chip her way to the win over Queens' Briana for the 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Watermelon had a more assertive game 2, beginning with a four-ball run. The Flames' Briana made a push-back but missed contact on her last ball, and Watermelon won from ball-in-hand to clinch the series at 2-0. Watermelon did her part in game 3, making another ball on the break. Briana got down to her last ball but couldn't find any positioning, and Watermelon banked the 2 to the bottom right for the 3-0 series sweep. Watermelon is set to play in the second round.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Spot v. Chelsea. A young star and a veteran clash in 10-ball with the silver cue. Pronger's Spot made a ball on the break, but it was a three-ball run-out at the end that set him apart from Eastside's Chelsea, who only managed a little offense. Spot leads the series 1-0. The Sharks' Chelsea played with honor in game 2, dominating the possession after the Tridents' Spot had a scratch on the 6. Chelsea could have made a combination for the win, but instead played clean, and Spot would double-pot the 8 and 10 to the top right to claim the win, securing the series at 2-0. Chelsea would get a little redemption in game 3, converting a tough angle 4-10 combination to the top right to avoid the sweep as Spot settled for a 2-1 series win to take him to the second round where he'll face the Midland Predators' Americus.

BMW RockDome, Westside: Chimpy v. Neopolitan. An enigmatic veteran takes on a co-captain in 8-ball with the blue cue. Westside's Chimpy attacked well early and late, weathering a three-ball run from Pearl's Neopolitan before answering with a four-ball run-out, capped by banking the 8 to the top side for the game 1 win and 1-0 series lead. Game 2 was more of a chippy battle between the players, which then erupted into late offense. The Surfers' Neopolitan pushed a three-ball run but missed the 8, only for the Rockers' Chimpy to rally back on a four-ball run-out for the win. Chimpy took the series at 2-0. Chimpy had a little faster play in game 3 than Neopolitan could muster, although neither player was able to convert a deep run. Chimpy swept the series 3-0 and advances to the second round.

BMW RockDome, Westside: Chimpy v. Wario. The host completes a doubleheader, this time in Rotation with the red cue. Game 1 saw Westside's Chimpy emerge with the lead early in game 1, but Southridge's Wario pulled ahead on a three-ball run and won 8-7 by sinking the 15 at the bottom right. Wario leads 1-0 in the series. The Defenders' Wario enjoyed a three-ball run from the start of game 2, a lead that he would never let go as the Rockers' Chimpy pushed but fell short. Wario's 8-6 win sealed the series at 2-0. Wario had an easy go in game 3, as Chimpy never really challenged him in the 8-3 result. Wario swept the series 3-0, although Chimpy revealed a blister as an excuse for his drop in quality in his second straight series.

UPS Hall, Maplewood: Whiskers v. Fluffina. Two players once traded for each other meet in 9-ball with the blue cue. Maplewood's Whiskers looked great with a pair of three-ball runs and then the final shot on the 9 over three turns for the 1-0 series lead over Infinity's Fluffina. The Torpedoes' Fluffina took some time to get going in game 2 after the Lumberjacks' Whiskers made three balls on the break. Fluffina then ignited a six-ball run-out, the massive play giving her a win to tie the series at 1. Fluffina was the better player early in game 3, but Whiskers carved out a five-ball run-out to take the win and the 2-1 series win. Whiskers punched her ticket to the second round.

Gillette Center, Swordpoint: Dreamy v. Shelley. The silver cue returns to action now for a series of 13-ball. Swordpoint's Dreamy worked a three-ball run from the break after making one of each. Infinity's Shelley tried to play for positioning, but Dreamy quickly finished the game victorious to take a 1-0 series lead. The Torpedoes' Shelley had to use a little defense in game 2, blocking the top left to stall the Blades' Dreamy. The play worked, as Shelley made three balls over the final two turns to take the win, evening the series at 1. Shelley had a big four-ball run early in game 3, and enough tactical skill to sink the 8 in the top right through Dreamy's defense for the win. Shelley came back to take the series 2-1, putting her in round two.

Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Patches v. Salmo. A superstar captain meets a journeyman in 9-ball with the silver cue. Boston's Patches began with a four-ball run after making a pair on the break, but Southern's Salmo shut the door on a three-ball run-out, winning game 1 and giving himself the 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw a more back-and-forth cadence to the attacks, with the Swifts' Patches getting the short end of the deal. The Monarchs' Salmo came up clutch with a pair of late shots to seal the win and the 2-0 series. Patches found herself struggling in game 3 and then she suffered a late scratch, allowing Salmo to complete the 3-0 series sweep with a pair of shots from ball-in-hand. Salmo will travel to play the Capital City Sharpshooters' Sprinkles in the second round.

Ford Forum, Pronger: Zach v. Slinks. Two surprisingly strong veterans are set to meet in 7-ball with the red cue. Pronger's Zach had an excellent start with five balls over two turns in game 1, but he left the door open and Westside's Slinks converted the final pair to win and take a 1-0 lead in the series after game 1. Game 2 was even faster, with the Rockers' Slinks poking a four-ball run from the break only for the Tridents' Zach to scoop up the win on a three-ball run-out. This tied the series at 1. Zach assembled a four-ball run in game 3 with the hopes of adding to it on a separate turn, but his offense ran dry. Slinks made the last three balls over two turns to get the win, clinching the series at 2-1 as she heads to the second round.

Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Watermelon v. Peach. Powerful foes keep the red cue in action for their 9-ball bout. The 8 was decisive in game 1, as North Modernistic's Peach rattled it out of the bottom right and Pearl's Watermelon knocked it down before taking the 9. Watermelon owns a 1-0 series lead after the strong finish. The Nighthawks' Peach had her chances in a close game 2 battle, but she left the 9 short at the bottom right, and a tap-in secured the win for the Surfers' Watermelon, who secured the series at 2-0. Peach mucked up a lot of the shots early in game 3, but Watermelon eventually broke loose to win with a four-ball run-out. Watermelon swept the series 3-0 and heads to round two.

HP Field Events Center, Midland: Shawn v. Chelsea. The red cue gets another turn, this time playing 13-ball. Midland's Shawn made a pair on the break and then played patiently, allowing Eastside's Chelsea to get close. Shawn then struck on a three-ball run-out for the win and 1-0 series lead. The Sharks' Chelsea did well in game 2 to pot balls in the side pockets, but her positioning play on the same turn resulted in the 8 going down early, gifting the win to the Predators' Shawn. This also gave the series to Shawn at 2-0. Shawn went empty on the game 3 break and Chelsea quickly made an impact on offense. Shawn tried to strategically scratch, but Chelsea was a little quicker in earning the win. Shawn took the 2-1 series win to get to the second round.

Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Twinkie I v. Chimpy. The silver cue gets a turn at 13-ball in this series. Pacific's Twinkie I had a chance to take game 1 on her own merits before a flubbed shot, but Westside's Chimpy gave it away anyway by scratching as he made the 8. Twinkie I holds a 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Twinkie I asserted herself with a four-ball run to start in game 2, and while the Rockers' Chimpy got some back, Twinkie I put the 8 in the top right for a decisive win that seals the series at 2-0. Chimpy did much better in game 3, getting the side pockets first and then patiently playing on the 8 until he put it in the top left. Twinkie I accepted a 2-1 series win as her pass to the second round.

Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Rudolph v. Oreo. A sophomore meets a veteran in 12-ball with the blue cue. Terrace City's Oreo showed less efficiency in positioning in game 1, while Harrison's Rudolph adapted to his scratch and eventually took the win. Rudolph leads the series 1-0. Both players employed a more defensive strategy in game 2 as they searched for openings. The Specters' Rudolph made his own luck on his three-ball run-out, carving the 6 to the bottom right to set up the winning shot that secured him the series at 2-0 over the Knights' Oreo. Rudolph got off to a great start with five balls down after two turns. Oreo held on as long as she could with defense, but Rudolph claimed the 5 at the top left, winning game 3 and sweeping the series 3-0 to get to the second round.

Cisco Arena, Tysini: Charli v. Bryant. The silver cue steps back into action in 8-ball. The players exchanged four-ball runs early in game 1 before tightening up. Tysini's Charli put in a three-ball run, but Maplewood's Bryant sandwiched that with a pair of two-ball runs to get the win for a 1-0 series lead. The Hummingbirds' Charli wouldn't bend in game 2, taking the early lead and staving off a comeback from the Lumberjacks' Bryant to earn a win of her own which tied the series at 1. Charli had her chances to win in game 3, getting a bit loose on offense. None was worse than her hitting two kicks perfectly to get on the 8 only to miss the winning shot twice, allowing Bryant to convert a pair for the win. Bryant took the close series 2-1 and will play in the second round.

Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Wings v. Sydney C. The last series of the day sees a veteran take on a rookie in 9-ball with the blue cue. Modernistic's Sydney C. had some troubles with scratching in game 1, her last one coming as she potted the 9. This gifted the win and 1-0 series lead to Central's Wings, who had played well to that point. The Warriors' Wings did a much better job on offense in game 2, starting with a five-ball run. He then deflected a shot off the 7 after the Union's Sydney C. missed her chance for a counterattack. Wings' deflection potted the 9 to the bottom right to seal the series at 2-0. Game 3 went pretty quickly at the end, with a four-ball run by Wings, a three-ball run in response from Sydney C., and then Wings potting the last two balls for the win and the 3-0 series sweep. Wings is off to the second round.

Now that Tournament is back in action, the daily schedule going forward is likely to see more instances of pool coming before cricket while the two overlap. This is expected to last into October.
